View Full Version : When will Clark start wearing glasses?

We all know that when he finally becomes Superman, Clark creates an alter ego to hide his powers: the bumbling nerdy clark kent adorned with glasses.

My question is, now that Clark has had all these interactions with lana, lois, and lex sans glasses, at what point will he start wearing them and how will lana, lois, and lex not realize he is in fact Superman?

if this has been discussed before, i apologize, but i did a search and didnt find the topic.

I don't think they have the gall to do it in this show, probably in fear of TW losing his sex apeal.

Just my theory though.

Well he wont really need them until he puts on the cape and tights, and I imagine that wont be until the last episode.

I thought the writers missed a golden opportunity with that episode.

In the last scene when Clark meets Pete in the Talon, they should have had Pete say, "Whoa Clark, almost didn't recognize you with those glasses on."

Or something to that effect.

LOL, that would have been very funny, especially since they are so keen on one liner puns like that.:D

the glasses arent necessary until he has the need for a disguise. He wont have the need for a disguise until he decides to become Superman.

In terms of people not recognizing him. Lana knows he's Superman before he leaves Smallville so she's not an issue. As for Lex and Lois, well thats just one of those things you buy into with Superman. Realistically in any version of Superman how do the World's best investigative reporter and a Criminal Mastermind not put 2 and 2 together either?

I thought the scene at the end of Whisper said a lot, where he kept taking them off and putting them on in front of the mirror. The seed's been planted, he just has no need for them again...yet

Good point about the mirror, I didn't even connect that thought.

Plus I always thought it was funny Lex and Lois couldn't figure it out. Silly.

Kaboom

i agree that he doesn't need them yet....but i think the need is vastly approaching. hes in college, Lois is episode 100 away becoming an investigative reporter after she starts investigating the death of her cousin (in my opinion), the fortress of solitude exists, Lex Luthor is a hair away from becoming "the villian of the story".

if theyre not needed yet, theyre going to be needed pretty soon. Here's hoping anyway. I don't know about y'all but i've always thought it slightly strange to see clark running around without them.

Oh I know; I just thought it'd be a neat aside to have Pete say that line. It would keep in line with the writers' other nods to the future. Just thought it'd be a funny moment on the show. :D

What they should do is make clark need the glass's to focus his eye powers. You know the glasses prevent his heat and x-ray from going off just because of some normal eye function. They tried to pull this off in lois and clark kinda(clark had to put his glasses down to take and x-ray)

IronLion
11-23-2005, 06:18 AM
thats a way of explaining why he needs them. eye powers unexpectadly going off and he realises the glasses stop them from doing so, he has to start wearing them.......but when he does, he will have to grease his hair down and have a parting to have the full disguise.

The Incredible Hulk
11-23-2005, 09:01 AM
I never bought that excuse for the glasses, if that was the case his powers would be going off at random when he was Superman too... They're purely for disguising his appearance, the guy can see a gnat take a crap a mile away, he doesnt need them.

It really funny reading all of these way-out explanations on how clark hides is I.D. in Metropolis. The comic book Scenario works because it's Clark with glasses that "First" moves to Metropolis, having never met Lois, Perry, Lex or anyone else. Smallville screws all of that up. It's the cart before the horse.

The only thing I can come up with is Jor - El doing some kind of mind " whammy " on everyone for his son's protection, just before he leaves Smallville for the big city. They've darn near made Jor-El into Lord Odin anyway. So why not use some ol' Kryptonian memory eraser.

Clark used it on Lois in Superman II. She forgot everything.

Otherwise there is no secret I.D.

i would feel so cheated if a mind whammy is done. it would basically be like saying all the events that we've been watching the past 5 years never occurred.

tell me this, if you meet someone at work for the first time and they have glasses on, then you work with them everyday for a while, then one night you're out at a bar and run into that person sans glasses, do you just completely not recognize them? Anyone with half a functioning cortex is going to be able to tell Clark is Superman from meeting them both, especially two people of higher intelligence like Lois and Lex. It's one the weakest parts of the Superman myth, and one of those things you just accept to enjoy Superman.

And actually in the Silver Age comics, Clark not only knew Lex in Smallville but also ran into Lois Lane on occassion, as Superboy and Clark Kent.

suspension of disbelief my friend, thats all I can tell you. The glasses as disguise thing doesnt work without it, regardless of who's seen Clark without them on or not...

I've actually mistook a person I had a class with in school for two different people because that person wore glasses in the morning, but didn't in the evening class. I thought they looked similar, maybe they were related or something :o , but she carried herself differently in those classes.

That's the first time I realized the Clark Kent-in-glasses disguise actually works!

But if you got to know that person really really well, the way Lois knows Clark and Superman, would you still not realise that they are the same person.

Just a question.

Honestly I dont think they should wait till the end, we need to see the costumes origin, and see at least a little superhero action going on. As well we need to know how he keeps everyone from knowing his secret identity. Cuz lets face facts, hes never worn glasses..............little hard to explain why ya got the same face as superman.
Lois: Did I see you wearing spandex?
Clark: W-what?
Lois: Yea, on the news......picking up a bus.
Clark: ...Huh?
Lois: And FLYING!
Clark: Oh....you mean that...superman guy..

As for Lex and Lois, well thats just one of those things you buy into with Superman. Realistically in any version of Superman how do the World's best investigative reporter and a Criminal Mastermind not put 2 and 2 together either?

As far as Lois goes, that's one of the things that I loved about Lois in the original films (or at least how Donner intended it). She was too intelligent not to figure it out and put two and two together. It would be cool if that's how they played it in Smallville as well (if they ever get the chance to go that far). Like how Donner intended Lois to finding out the truth. She knew Clark was really Superman, but she had to trick him into revealing his identity. I could picture Erica Durance's Lois pulling something like that over Clark and tricking him into revealing his secret.

Lex on the other hand, in the comics at least, he had the resources to find out the truth and he did. When he did find out Clark was really Superman, he dismissed the idea. He thought it was too absurd of a notion that the most powerful being on the planet, would lead the life of a mild mannered news reporter. But in Smallville it's different. Lex has had his suspicions about Clark since day 1 when he ran him over with his car. He always thought there was more to him than meets the eye. All it would take would be for Superman to go public for Lex to put two and two together. I would be very interested to see how they would handle this. Perry and Jimmy on the other hand is anyone's guess.

If they're smart enough they will realize that the thing with the plane is a perfect opportunity to make Clark realize that he needs a secret identity. All they have to do is follow the plane sequence from Man Of Steel where he is mobbed by ppl after landing the plane.
Hopefully the glasses will be introduced this season.

There is another fix for the classes and that's simply write Lois and Lex off the show until Clark appears as \S/. Sucks for Rosenbaum and Durance and I understand they have a contract but it makes the most sense.

Unfortunately I know. . . . .Plan B though would be only Lois gets written off, and Lex' screen time w/ Clark continues to fade. This would make way for 2 spin-offs one about Lex and one for Lois.

Yes I know that wont happen either. :(

Bruce_Wayne29

yes, I do agree that Lex's screen time with Clark should diminish. It seems totally unrealistical that these guys are no longer friends yet Clark is always barging in Lex's mansion without his permission whenever he wants.
They can easily do opposite stories, while Clark deals with his story arc for the episodes we see Lex building his empire on the opposite story arc.
I think the producers fear that having Lex on the show only works if he somehow interacts with Clark.
In season 4 they have 1 or 2 episodes in which they didn't interact at all after their friendship "ended" and those worked beautifully.

I love the way Clark barges into Lex's mansion.

It shows us that Clark is going on a hunch and his hunches always turn out to be right.

It shows us that if Clark has a belief in something he's not intimidated to tackle the situation head on.

We also get to see him listening to Lex's spiels and have Clark working out for himself what's the truth and what isnt it.

It has Lex wondering how the heck did Clark get past my security again. (He really should sack that security staff) ;)

I also like to see Lex live by a little hope that maybe Clark has popped in for a chat.

That's an interesting point of view as well but I just think it's not realistical on Lex's part (I find Clark's actions justified because usually he has to save ppl whose solution lies in Lex's hands). I guess another possibility could be that Lex allows this to happen to try and find out more about Clark's secrets, I don't know...

Yes, they do say there can't be hate without love don't they ? Maybe he just hates him because he never trusted him enough to tell his secret. Maybe that will be the biggest reason behind Lex's hate and starting to see Clark only as "the alien".

The thing is that even if they could find a logical reason why no one will recongise him with the glasses they still have to have a reason why they don't notice the change in his demeanor. Plus Perry White saw him use his powers and even know he saw him bleed when Superman and Clark arrive in Metroplois together he'll put two and two together.
