View Full Version : Should the Joker's appearance be held until the movie?

What do you think?

For me personally, I would like it if they only teased at his appearance in trailers/images etc. until the actual movie ala Scarecrow. But I'm sure there are others who think he should he be straight up out there for everyone to see ala 89'?

--Oh and before anyone brings it up, I'm aware of the previous thread (From August), this is a carry-on of that threads general idea.

Yes. Build anticipation and only show hints/teaser during promotion

I dont care as much about him being shown before hand, as much as I do about what he looks like in the end.

Wait till the movie.

Either way is fine with me.

It's pretty unlikely they won't show him until the movie. Promotion is everything nowadays in the movie business, so they HAVE to show the main villain in advance, definitely if it's a high profile one like The Joker. They were able to hold off showing Scarecrow and Ra's (or the real Ra's at least) in Begins cause it had such a strong focus on Batman and Batman alone and cause the general public isn't that familiar with either villain. But for the sequel, people are gonna wanna be teased with images of the Joker. Sure, sparingly at first, but he will be seen in full form way before the film hits...

On the other hand, the Joker is such an iconic villain, as far as his looks, that they could get away with posting fragments of him and people would still get the idea.

They don't need to necessarily need to show a full figure or headshot when people can figure out enough off of a pasty-white forehead with wild eyebrows, a purple lapel with a garish flower, or his ever-present smile.

That is if Goyer/Nolan/rest of the production crew decide to keep Joker fairly "old school."

That of course, remains to be seen...

They'll probably show him alot in advertisments and trailers, ala '89.

Yes. Build anticipation and only show hints/teaser during promotion. Or atleast have him in the shadows for the trailers and commercials.

I agree, promotion is everything. And the public are going to want to see The Joker. Though, if I had it my way, I wouldn't want to see him until the movie. (But God knows I'll just have to take a peak.) ;)

I personally doubt WB will keep The Joker under wraps until the movie. It goes back to what I said months ago. The Joker will be a major selling point for this movie. They may not show off much footage of him (maybe just quick glimpses in the trailers), but I'll be damned if they manage to hold off showing him until Summer 2008.

Besides, after Superman Returns... they'll want to bring in as many people as possible in those first few days. I think they better have a global release day.

I think WB should better show Joker in first full trailer, but I want to just see 2 shots of him, because this will help TDK in box office.

But anyway, I think there should also be much more Joker's scenes in 2nd trailer.

I think it would be smarter for WB to hold off showing the Joker until the movie. If you give us small snips of him (show the Joker in shadow in the trailer, hear the laugh, show people dead with smiles streached on their faces ect) it will build the hype. The general public know enough about Batman to understand who the bad guy is going to be, and I think it will hype people up even more then if you show him straight off the bat. It's the Jaws/Blair Witch effect, the waiting is even more fun then seeing the actual thing.

Yeah, I'd like a poster showing the Joker lurking in the shadows with his wide-brimmed hat. I just want that. Keep his fully fledged appearance until the movie.

Keep his fully fledged appearance until the movie. what would be even cooler is a poster with the joker , lurking in the shadows , wearing a purple suit , hands behind his back in a sort of hannibal lectorish pose . if THAT wouldn't look cool i don't know what will...

It would be cool, but in these Internet days itīs virtually impossible. At some point someone was going to take an onset picture or something.

I wish they would keep his appearance a secret. They won't.

But he'll definitely be much more mysterious. We'll see glimpses of him before the release, so we won't know exactly what to expect.

i'd like to have a good idea of the joker's appearnace before the movie just so i don't get an unpleasant surprise. i don't want to be sitting there at the movie and suddenly go "what the f**k is that?!...the joker?...no, no that's wrong." i'd rather do that at home in front of my computer a few months beforehand.

Crooklyn

Keeping Joker off the viewer's eye beforehand is not only improbable, but deterrent to the film. Joker is the most known comic book villain out there, he deserves much more than a petty glimpse in trailers/posters.

It goes w/o saying that he doesn't take over the promotion, but the audience should definitely know that the Joker is back.

in the teasers they wont show joker just maybe his back and definatly hear him laugh

WB should follow Sony's method for Venom. Show hints in the teaser, give a promo image at Comic Con that doesn't show him fully, and (I'm guessing) showing him in full glory for the full trailer. Look at the Spidey boards, the hype is overwhelming for the villain. That's the type of hype we need.

Agreed.

Teaser - hints

Comic-Con Footage - one scene at the end of trailer

Full trailer - the same from C-Con ffotage

2nd Trailer - 3-4 scenes

Maybe the posters could be a dark silhouette and you would only be able to see the grin.

I would try to ignore all news and pictures from TDK. But I know I can't. It could be so great. To be completely surprised in the theatre...

Maybe I should just look at the first joker pic and the poster.
yeah I'll do that.

...I won't....After I have seen one pic I need to se ethe whole ****ing lot of 'em...

It's just impossible...:(

No need for any manip, it speaks for itself even if it's Tom Cruise's face!

But i would put here a bit darker color and shadow tone.

No. Pointless to tease the appearance of a character everyone has known for 60+ years. Tease his character, not his appearance.

But by teasing his appearance aren't you essentially teasing the character?

I say, build the antipation and only show hints of him in the trailers. This is a good thread. I wouldn't mind if he is walking away from the camera or showing his shadow. Maybe we could also hear his laugh.

I'm willing to bet that some pics will get leaked a few months before the film but I'm willing to wait. Nolan has won my trust w/Begins.

Singer, on the other hand, needs to be monitored very closely.

But then again think about it...we never got any spy photos of Beast for X3...or Scarecrow for BB...or Dr. Doom for FF...not even Venom for Spider-man 3. The most we ever got were on set descriptions.

So keeping Joker's appearance a secret CAN be done.

Keeping the Joker's appearance secret is an impossible task. It's like the first Baby pics of Cruise and Holmes little spawning or the latest Ferrari.

Yes, but knowing today's media, they probably won't get their claws out of the skin until they get what they want. Nolan and his WB crew better tighten the security and fast. However, I would LIKE to avoid seeing pics of the Joker until the opening of TDK, but it would, without question, be futile, and my inner self would and will plunge out and compel me to feast my eyes on the bee's knees that is the photo/s of the Joker, if any. If we're talking trailers and advertisement, I won't be complaining if they are going to show the Joker in teaser trailers, but WILL if in excess. Show a split-second glimpse of him at the end of the TDK teaser, ala Voldemort in GoF teaser. Voice-overs and maniacal laughters should cover the fanboy curiosity. A few gasps and shocks from Rachel, Gordon and Batman here and there, and glimpses at the Joker's victims, maybe.

I think there should be at least 2 pics of Ledger in make-up and suit from the set.
