This is the thread for us; the few, the proud, the fans of Ben Reilly! That's right, this is a thread by his fans, FOR his fans. If you hated the Clone Saga, this thread ain't for you. There are countless other threads around bashing it and you'd probably be happier there. This is STRICTLY for those of us who thought the good outweighed the bad to give us an open forum to discuss the best webhead ever nearly 10 years after his wrongful demise.
Fans of Reilly, you may enter!

Blame me, I was part of the Wrestlecrap World Order back in the day :D
And yeah daily grind crew especially with Desiree  , maybe some plots with Ben interacting with little May (Last minute baby sitter?),
We all know that Marvel will bring Reilly back one day as some revenge crazed lunatic who'll cross the line that Peter dares not touch. But I'm thinking until than maybe Defalco should use him in Spidergirl, I know he's got a kid with Jeanine (Who I reallllllllllly hope, is the character from the Parkers past, thats gonna show up in issue 93) But hell its in an alternate universe, and Mayday could use a new mentor, now that Phil's been Goblified.

I personally loved how they handeled the relationship between the two. Reilly was clearly a different person then Peter, who'd lived a different life and had different views and experiences. Regardless, they formed a bond in time that was as close as brothers that only really got to shine in the last few issues with him alive.
Ah, about time someone made a thread for us. I would have done it, but given my limited post count and even lower credibility....
As for Reilly, I was thinking about him quite a bit today.
Going over things in my head, ways new stories could be introduced to the 616 that harkened back to Rielly.
I would love to see him come back, and it WOULD be very easy. His death went against all continuity of clone degeneration, and the man that was impaled on the glider could be passed off as a clone.
However, I don't see that happening any time soon, at least not until one of us or Defalco gets to writing a core book.
One thing I did think of that I personally love, would be a daily grind person stumbling upon Peter one day, and thinking that it was Ben. The opposite of what happened with Ben a few times.
Really, to think of all the supporting charecters running around back then. You had most of Peter's co workers and friends, and then the new group surrounding Reilly. It was fantastic. And now, prior to Peter joining the NA, there was almost no supporting cast.
So many great people, all just brushed under the carpet and never mentioned since.
Here's hoping we see some soon.

Eh, ya shoulda made a thread an' we'da been behind ya.
Along with what you've all said, I'da liked to know what happened to Jessica Carradine. She's spent all her life hatin' Spidey fer "killing" her father, but then forgives him just in time to disappear. Some closure there would be nice.
Yeah. But then again, closure with a lot of the stuff back then would be nice.

Whats the deal with the Jackal returning over in Daredevil / Punisher? Anyone got any info on that. Seems kinda strange that if the Jackal actually came back he'd have plans that didn't involve Peter Parker in anyway shape or form

Nice idea, I'd actually want to see him again but only if May was with him, cause thats pretty much the only reason (Besides Degeneration which he beat) why it would take him so damn long to return

Some fun facts I discoverd about MC2 from a Comic Geek/Floor Felow of mine.
The MC2 universe has been given the designation of Earth 982 from the Watchers
The only real difference between the original Marvel Universe(616) and the MC2(982) is a span of fifteen years, thats all, the MC2's "Age of Marvels" happened 15 years before the Marvel Universes.
While other versions of May Parker exist (What if the Scarlet Spider killed Spider Man, Ages of Apacolypse, possibley 616) only three May Parker Spider Girls do, along with the MC2's there are Earth 9997 (Earth X) where May is Venom/Spidergirl and Earth 1122 (Paradise X) where May was raised by Ben Reilly. :Which caused me to book it across campus field this afternoon to the comic scene, only to discover that the shop isn't open on mondays :hulk: :

Just wondering...
Whatever happen to Joe Wade (aka Evil Scarlet Spider) ?
Thanks, I'll get on that Avatar thing soon.
I have the original ASM 149.
As for Paradise X, I wouldn't get too excited. While Earth X and Universe X are both great, PX gets really sloppy. Spidergirl is just Spidergirl, and the only mention of Ben Rielly is her one line that Peter isn't her father, Ben is.
WOLVERINE25TH

Wade's currently in comic limbo after bein' taken down in WSS #4. I did his bio on Spiderfan an' he was th' first villain in my Spidey stories.
I skimmed Paradise X. After Earth an' Universe, I couldn't take all th' words so I didn't read it that intently. I know, my attention span sucks. Sue me.

WOLVERINE25TH
12-06-2005, 12:38 AM
Doubtful. That extended SS arc wasn't exactly very popular with creators, so I dunno how quickly they'll go back to it.
Earth X is a masterpiece, and deserves as much attention as possible until you can grasp all of it. Universe X is good; the artwork is definate step down(Although the Spidey one shot is fantastic), and the story is much more complex and jumbled.
Paradise, though... it screams "afterthought." It's entire premise is based upon NEGATING the outcome of Universe X. Artwork is consistently bad, and the story is almost incomprehensable.

Fans of Reilly, if yer not readin' Spider-Girl you should! This latest issue has Kaine predict th' return of THE SCRIERS! An' they're out fer Spider-Girl! I love th' continuity!
Yeah, Spider-Girl is great, even moreso for those Clone fan out there.
As for the Earth X trilogy and Parker, here's how it breaks down:
Earth X has Peter as a defeated old man: disgraced as Spiderman and hallow as Spiderman(Mary Jane has passed away). He has disowned his daughter May for bonding with the Venom symbiote, and spends the majority of his shared page time acting pissed off at the world. It's a good, reasonable look at his charecter in the future. The end of the story has Peter donning his Spidey outfit one last time to help his daughter May in the battle against the Skull. The last time we see Peter, he's looking up, losing weight, and offered a job by the NYPD. At the moment, he's still not ready.
Universe X has a much more indepth look at Peter. In fact, the one shot Universe X: Spidey is widely thought of as the best segment of U:X. Peter has - at least on the surface - become a better man, and accepts May for the woman she has become. He winds up joining the tattered remains of the NYPD and goes on assignment to stop Spiders-Man, a mutant with red skin that casts illusions. Peter, now decked out in a spiffy Officer Parker uniform complete with webshooters, doesn't return for several days. May searches for him and finds him in an illusion with Spiders-Man. There is some soul searching involved, and deals with a possible life Peter could have had. At the end of the day, May brings the two mutants out of the illusion. May and Peter have finally made their peace; they will love one another with no exceptions. And Peter offers Spiders-man a place alongside the good guys.
In Paradise X, the most Spider-Man you get is in the form of an alternate universe Spider-Girl. She's in a task force similar to Exiles that is quite important to the story. She eventually crosses paths with Peter and May. It's probably the funniest moment of the book, when Spider-girl and Venom(May) first cross paths, each thinking the other one is some sort of evil trick(Much the same way Ben Rielly got his start). Mid fight, they figure out what's going on, and embrace screaming "That. means ....were... SISTERS!" Nothing else much happens with the Spider-man family. Oh, and Spiders-Man finally turns good.

Love Ben, got me into the comics again in the 90s and was a great character. What Marvel and people don't get ois that people dont hate Ben, they hate that he was revealed to be the real Peter Parker. Everyone I met has been very loving of Ben.
But ya, if I ever wrote Spider-man, i would have a arc that was dedicated to something Ben did in the past that maybe Peter has to deal with today, and bring back Kaine. One of my fav stories is when the Grim Hunter is hunting Ben thinking he is Spider-Man and then is killed by Kaine. His first arc as Scarlet Spider when he took out Venom was cool to.
I have the exculsive Kay Bee Scarlet Spider figure From Spider-Man Classics proudly on my wall.

I think Ben's alot better than Peter. I mean he revolutionized Spidey's weaponry. Mini-dot spider tracers, Impact Webbing, stingers, new costume, and even made webbing out of anything he had around the house or could afford. Such a genius that Ben Reiilly is!
Fathermithras
12-10-2005, 03:59 PM
He was a "cool" Peter. He had to get over all his nerdiness and became a street living, rough and tough, "Cool" guy. He's up on fads and what not, and due to Seward, he had alot more time to experiment. He was a dan interesting character and it sucks we lost em.
Agreed with the above Fathermithras; The Scarlet Spider costume is my favourite superhero outfit ever.
In other news, one of the guys that works at a comic shop near me put up his entire collection of stuff for sale a few days ago. I convinced him to put out Reilly-centric stories such as Lost Years, Redemption, and his own relaunch on the front of the shelves.

I've been reading Spider-Girl off again, on again since it first started and this past issue may just keep me reading a little more regularly. Why? Phil Urich is back as the Green Goblin, baby! :D I LOVED the Green Goblin series and am still PO'd that it got cancelled after 13 issues. May has Tactile Telekinesis; she can propell any object she has clinged to her hand.
Way back around PPSM #75 I was workin' on keepin' Ben alive in comic form an' had come up with my own Spider-Girl (check yer dates, my ideas predate What If...? by almost a year) except as th' Scarlet Spider. I also gave her telepathy as a natural evolution to her spider-sense. Kinda funny th' real SG gets a similar kind of upgrade.

Eh my Grandad probably killed his so it's kinda a subject I don't bring up much :D
Anyway I was reading my Clone Genesis trade, while Jackie Liu was doing my work, and I was wondering about Peter's whole realization at the end of issue 150. His conclusion makes absolutly no sense, He likes MJ, and due to this he must be the original? Uhhhhhhhh newsflash Pete, Warren took DNA samples from you, to update the Clones memory as far ahead as possible, so that when the two of them awakened they would be identical, physically and mentally, which is why they say the exact same thing as each other when they do wake up. Ben would have as much feelings for MJ as Pete did (See Birth of a Spider Man / Power & Responsibilty back ups for massive examples of this), even if he had been subjected to Warren as an outside source the last minute tinkering with his mind would be exactly the same as Peter.
Don't make any sense to me, guess Conway didn't have any other way of wrapping it up
And than why didn't Peter just ask Doc Conners what the results that he had threw away stated during the later Clone Saga, Surely Conners would remember if his friend was a friggen clone or not
WOLVERINE25TH
12-11-2005, 09:14 PM
Well, ya gotta remember; th' 70s things were wrapped up with little logic. 'Sides, I think it was more th' fact that he DID have feelings is why he felt he was th' original, like a copy couldn't an' they couldn't be duplicated. That adds a li'l depth to it. But, regardless; there are very few instances where Peter's science is used where needed.

12-13-2005, 08:09 PM
from the Tom Defalco interview....
Andrew: Where do you think the storyline fell short, if you think so at all?
Tom: I think editorial eventually lost control of the story, and the marketing department took charge. Instead of moving along at a brisk pace, the story was stretched farther and farther out. At one point, I was asked to plot a two-part story. After I pitched the story and it was accepted, I was informed that it would be stretched out over four issues instead of two. I was later told that marketing wanted to stretch it over eight issues. I argued and argued, and they agreed to keep it to four...if I could pitch another four-issue arc by the following morning. Let's just say, I did the best I could with the time I had.
Why do I prefer Ben? It rests on 3 reasons.
1) Cooler Costumes. With the exception of the Black Costume and Peter's one time quick change into the below outfit, I prefer every costume Reilly has worn to the many different renditions Parker has had. http://www.angelfire.com/myband/skacorps/chris/sman/smansuitwjacket.jpg
The ironic thing about this costume is that it appeared during Ben's time in the Spider books, and the design looks more like something he would put together than Peter.
2) His Attitude. He has this cool swagger about him that rests around the Rebel Without A Cause feel. He was more positive about things in general, despite his situation. He seemed back then, and still seems to me now, an overall better written charecter than Peter has been.
3) His mystery. I've always been one to enjoy the supporting charecter more than the main charecter. To give you all an example I know you'll understand, my favourite charecter in the Spiderman movies is Harry. My favourite charecter in Empire Strikes Back is Lando. I love the supporting charecters. And since Ben was killed and his time permanantly limited in the Spiderman mythology, that's what I view him as. A supporting charecter. And he has so much of his life that we don't know about. Sure, He's a clone. We have the Lost Years and Redemption. But there is a part of him we'll never see. We'll never see where he could be today, and we'll probably never see where he was. And it's that potential that sits there, those awesome scenarios I play out in my head, that keep him vibrant and alive and ahead of Peter in every way.

What I actually liked about Ben Reilly was that, even though he was a clone, he was what Peter SHOULD HAVE been if the writers had decided to write him in character. The fact that he created impact webbing, brought down Venom, and actually had to make ends meat among other things left me wondering "Now THIS is Peter Parker. Why didn't the writers make the Real Spider-Man like this (and yes, I did have a feeling Peter was the real Spider-Man, although there were times I was convinced otherwise.) Also, while I didn't care for the "Scarlet Spider" name, the costume was decent. And while I didn't really like the idea of Ben Reilly becoming Spider-Man, that costume was cool too.

I believe that its from the second to last episode of the Spider-Man Animated series' fifth season. It was titled "Spider-Wars, Part 1: I Really, Really Hate Clones." Hope that's right. You can still catch reruns of this and other episodes from the series on Toon Disney or ABC Family channel.

Ben: Peter, What's Ultimate Spider Man?
2. After an mixup with MJ involving Ben's ashes and a Nestle Qwick can, Peter becomes possesed by Ben at randoms moments, hillarity ensues
1. In an order to finally remove continuity and regular common sense from all of its main stream comic books, Marvel has Kaine reveal to Peter that he was Ben Reilly all along, when asked about how he and Ben appeared together at the same time, "Ben" says that the Jackal taught him another power, advanced ventriloquisim, allowing him to make himself appear in two places at the same time, Ben - Kaine has to go "home" by the end of the issue in order to avoid conflicts, with the complete horse**** story he has provided
Yeah that last one was random, but I needed one more, and I had run outta refrences from T.V. shows
Help me out by posting some ways to bring him back or ways not to bring him back

Citizen_Kaine

How abouts something real simple,
Ben wakes up in a dumpster, as if Osborn was saying "You are worth less than Brooklyn trash, you aren't even worth killing" Ben discovers that he missed the big finale and that he (another clone) was killed and was hailed a hero, hearing about Pete and MJ's child, Ben leaves and returns to exhile, deciding that the Parkers don't need anymore complication in there lives, when Peter and his family are in real danger though he'll come back and save there asses from behind the scenes (Easily retconn this part into other stories such as Final Chapter, and Last Stand)
WOLVERINE25TH

I actually have a FINAL Osborn story planned fer my Spidey stories, but I'm hesitant to reveal any points in case anyone decided to read 'em. Ben plays a big part, though, and I do introduce a brief new goblin. If anyone really wants to know what I've planned, I guess I could spoil it. But in th' meantime, I'll put up th' image that inspired me:

Marvel P@$$ied out when some vocal fans got upset. That is what killed the Clone Saga for me. That they had to spend so much time recanting everything that they set up.
I feel the same thing will happen to JMS' run. I am enjoying the totem element because it actually makes Spidey's origin make sense to me.

I agree. I liked her,.. I've never liked Doc Ock... I was actually thought it was cool when Kaine killed him. His resurrection being one of the reasons I left. 1995, a mysterious figure began appearin' in Spidey books always in shadow an' talkin' to Aunt May. Few issues later he was revealed to be th' clone.

Wow. Someone else digs the totem thing JMS has done. I thought I was like the only one who enjoyed it. It gets tiresome hearing people put that story down because, "It changes Spidey's origin". But meanwhile it didn't change anything it just gave the reader a choice to decide for themselves. :O But I guess a writer doing something new and interesting with the character isn't enough. :(
But, yeah, Marvel definitely bowed down to the outcry of the more hardcore Spidey fans.

My mom said she hated kids too,.... then she had 5 accidents and grew to love us.
As for Black Cat,.. I was all into it for the first three or four issues, however many they first came out with, but the wait killed it for me. I found such a distaste for Kevin Smith that I decided to not bother with him again. I'm normally understanding toward lateness and such, but his complete lack of respect for the comic fans and comic company in general killed me,.. and so I don't buy anything he comes out with any more (and sold the few that I did have). If he comes onto an X-Men title I may give him another shot, otherwise I don't give a lick about the guy.

Its a four part story,on the back of Power and Responsibilty
Basically it retells the original clone saga through the clone's eye (In part four it's via Ben's perspective)
Part One WEB 117 Is the clones creation
Part Two ASM 394 Is when he meets Gwen
Part Three PP 51 Is his first introduction with Spider Man
Part Four Spec 217 Is Ben's fight with Peter in ASM 149, and his revelation that his life is nothing but a lie

I really liked that storyline they did with "The Game". A bunch of rich guys betting on who's superpowered/enhanced player could beat the other and they wanted Scarlet Spider as one of the targets. Definitely a story I could have gotten into but they quickly dropped it. :(
