Bloodwynd is the descendant of a group of African-American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American) slaves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery) of a man named Jacob Whitney. These slaves created the magical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_%28paranormal%29) Blood Gem and used it to kill Whitney. The Blood Gem was passed down among the slaves' descendants. Unbeknownst to them, the Blood Gem was a gateway to another dimension, and the demon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon) Rott claimed the souls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul) of those killed by the Gem's magic.

In recent times, Rott sucked Bloodwynd into the Gem and mind controlled (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_control) the Martian Manhunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_Manhunter) into wearing Bloodwynd's gem and impersonating him. Using Bloodwynd's identity, the Manhunter joined the Justice League as one of their more mysterious members. Once the Martian Manhunter was freed of the mental control, the Justice League battled Rott and freed Bloodwynd.

Bloodwynd joined the League after they freed him from Rott's control. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that Catwoman is a thief and Cheshire is a killer. Wiki quotes Birds of Prey #63 which says that as an assassin Cheshire is second only to Lady Shiva. In her skill with poisons she is second only to Poison Ivy.
