Another 'X3' cast member confirmed
Friday, December 30 2005, 20:47 GMT -- by Daniel Saney
Mei Melancon has signed on to play mutant assassin Psylocke in X-Men 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Psylocke, a recurring favourite in the Marvel comic series, will be seen in the movie battling the X-Men alongside Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants. Her mutant powers include the ability to transport herself through shadows and telepathy.
Directed by Brett Ratner, who worked with Melancon on Rush Hour 2, the sequel will also feature newcomers to the series Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones) and Beast (Kelsey Grammer).

The evil mutant assassin Psylocke has been added to the upcoming X-Men 3 film, directed by Brett Ratner. The villainous part will be played by Filipina actress Mei Melancon, who previously worked with Ratner on Rush Hour 2. She played the role of "girl in car". She must have made quite an impression.
According to Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment have spiced things up by adding her to cause further mayhem on the third installment of the comic book series. She is best known for her fighting, telepathic skills, and a bizarrre ability to transport herself and others through shadows. She will fight against the X-Men as a member of Brotherhood of Mutants, lead by Magneto (Ian McKellen).
Although former director Bryan Singer left the project and there has been some controversy sparked about Halle Berry's special treatment, the premise sounds promising. It deals with a possible cure for the X-men's mutations and if they should, or would, pursue it. Never underestimate the power of moral dilemmas in the comic book world.
The film is set to open on May 26, during Memorial Day weekend. For more info on X-Men 3, visit our preview database.

The latest issue of DreamWatch magazine, just out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION star Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about his future projects in the small and big screen. Here are a few excerpts.
Regarding his new science-fiction TV Series THE ELEVENTH HOUR, which premieres January 19th in the UK, he said "The chance to do ELEVENTH HOUR was for me absolutely perfect because I wanted to do some mainstream television work and a series like this - which is contemporary, urban and gritty. On subjects that interested me and were fundamentally quite serious and yet still entertaining - was exactly what I was looking for."
Asked about his return to the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming X-MEN 3 movie, he said "X-MEN 3 went through a certain amount of pre-production drama before the cameras rolled - Bryan Singer withdrew from the project and then after some time Mathew Vaughan came onboard... Then Mathew also withdrew from the project, by which time it was almost too late. You can imagine, on a film like this, it requires a lot of preparation... Then Brett Ratner became the helmer and in every possible way hit the ground running with this project. I do know that everybody was working 48 hours ahead of what was being prepped. The pressure on them was enormous, so much so that the last 10 days that I was shooting - in fact a scene with myself and Sir Ian McKellen - we were shooting in the studio but from six o'clock in the evening until six o'clock in the morning."
With regard to the script for the third X -MEN movie, he feels that fans of the movie series will not be disappointed. "The script, I believe, is the best script of the three." he said "It's very intense, it's very emotional, it's very personal about the individuals that we've already got to know in the first two movies. It has some astonishing set-piece sequences. It has a number of quite significant deaths. [From] what I've seen so far, I think, it's likely to be extraordinary. Some absolutely outstanding work is happening in Vancouver - including from some of the new people who've come onboard ranging from Kelsey Grammer to Vinnie Jones, who are now part of the X-MEN family, If anyone saw Brett's RED DRAGON, which I thought was an outstanding film, I don't think they have any reason to be nervous."

Psylocke is a lock for X3

As Brett Ratner's take on the X-Men franchise, 'X-Men 3', races to meet it's tight deadline in order to compete head to head with 'Superman Returns' in theaters this summer, you'd think he'd be done casting. He isn't.
The film's cast is already huge, but Ratner has added another. The Hollywood Reporter says Filipina actress Meiling Melancon has been hired to play the part of the mutant Psylocke in the film. In the comics, Psylocke has had several incarnations. In most of them she's a member of the X-Men known for her telepathic skills and formidable fighting ability. In Ratner's movie, she'll be a villain and member of Magneto's evil Brotherhood of Mutants.
Mei's only other work in a feature film also involved director Brett Ratner. She appeared in 'Rush Hour 2'. Her role? Girl in car.
'X-Men 3' is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 26 in the US.

Welcome back, gang. With more action and more stars, the trilogy is poised to be the best one yet.
When a cure is found to treat mutations, the stage is set for the battle royale between the X-Men and the Brotherhood as they struggle to choose whether to remain as individuals or blend into mainstream human society.
Joining old-timers Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman are Kelsey Grammer as the furry blue Beast and Ben Foster as Angel.

Flick picks for '06
January 1, 2006
BY CINDY PEARLMAN
There has to be a morning after for Hollywood -- and we're not just talking about the old theme song for the remake of "The Poseidon Adventure." Last year was a disaster at the box office, with sinking revenues, waterlogged plots and many A-listers trying to swim upstream.
Will there be any flotation devices at the multiplex this year?
At least Hollywood is trying to keep its head above water, and the 2006 movie schedule looks promising. The one to watch? "The Da Vinci Code." Based on Dan Brown's novel, which sold more than a few copies, the Ron Howard film got the OK to shoot on location at the Louvre by French president Jacques Chirac. Now, that's some clout.
"I wouldn't want to open another movie anywhere near this one," Sony studio chief Amy Pascal was recently quoted as saying.
May 19 is when that Harvard symbology professor named Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) will hook us into the biblical plot.
"Da Vinci" isn't the only reason to return to the movies. Hollywood has a few other surprises in store: Tom Cruise's mission this year is to leap off the couch to bring home another installment of "Mission Impossible"; director Bryan Singer hopes his new "Superman" flies while his old franchise will see another installment in "X3"; Pixar wants to stay on the ground with its talking "Cars," and director Wolfgang Petersen is turning his ship upside down for some summer thrills in "Poseidon."
"X-Men 3" (May 26): They're back ... Wolverine, Prof. Xavier, Iceman, Storm, Dr. Jean Grey, Cyclops, Mystique, etc. It's the third installment of the wildly popular "X-Men" series, but without director Bryan Singer at the helm. He flew the X coop to direct "Superman Returns," which left the door open for "Rush Hour's" Brett Ratner to pick up the reins. The plot has been kept a little bit murky, but it's filled with mutants who want to X out the X-men and women. So what else is new? Vinnie Jones and Kelsey Grammer have joined the cast.

"X-Men 3" Cast Too Big?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment have added another character to "X-Men 3." Mei Melancon has joined the cast of the comic book-inspired sequel as the evil mutant assassin Psylocke.
"X-Men 3" helmer Brett Ratner also directed Melancon in his film "Rush Hour 2." Melancon's credits also include the HBO series "Deadwood," "CSI," and will appear in an upcoming episode of ""Kitchen Confidential."
According to Marvel Directory, Psylocke's powers include "many telepathic abilities, enabling her to read minds, communicate mentally with others over long distances, stun the minds of others with "mental bolts," control the minds of others, and create illusions in the minds of others. Psylocke can intensely focus her psionic powers into her "psychic knife," with which she can stun or kill an adversary."
In the film, she is slated to fight against the X-Men as a member of Magneto's (Ian McKellen) Brotherhood of Mutants.
While fans are glad for the addition of the sexy Psylocke, they are also speculating that such a large supporting cast will take away from the story itself. In early December, word began circulating of a slew of new mutant characters including Beast, Angel, Juggernaut, Kitty Pride and Callisto when studio photos were released. While a large ensemble cast has been vital to the story in each of the previous installments, those films were helmed by Bryan Singer. Ratner's ability to juggle plot and such a large cast of characters remains to be seen. Since Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg have returned as writers, fans are hopeful that the story will be as engaging as its predecessors.
Naturally, Patrick Stewart, who plays X-Men leader Professor Charles Xavier, has been talking up the film. Trekweb reports that in the latest issue of Dreamwatch Magazine, the star said "The script, I believe, is the best script of the three. It's very intense, it's very emotional, it's very personal about the individuals that we've already got to know in the first two movies. It has some astonishing set-piece sequences. It has a number of quite significant deaths. [From] what I've seen so far, I think, it's likely to be extraordinary. If anyone saw Brett's "Red Dragon," which I thought was an outstanding film, I don't think they have any reason to be nervous."
If fans are less than enamored by this installment, they may still be able to get their mutant fill when Hugh Jackman fights the good fight in the "X-Men" spin-off "Wolverine" slated for release in 2007.

The new year finds superheroes returning in force, as the X-Men return to the screen in "X-Men 3" and another superhero is reborn, as Superman flies back onto the big screen for the first time in almost 20 years. The new franchise will also be helmed by the guy who directed the first two X-Men films, Bryan Singer.
Some people expect there to be a line at the movie theaters this year with films such as "Superman Returns," "X-Men 3," "Mission Impossible 3" and "Miami Vice."
But some aren't as confident about "X-Men 3" which will have "Rush Hour's" Brett Ratner replacing Singer as director of the series.
"Ratner was the original choice to direct 'Superman Returns,'" said Genese Shanklin, of Montgomery. "I can't think of too many people that are big fans of Ratner as director considering his other films.
"The trailer didn't look bad though."

LOS ANGELES - “X-Men 3" will have a new villain in its latest installment as Psylocke, the "evil mutant assassin" joins the team. Filipina actress Mei Melancon has been penciled in to play this role.
Melancon has some experience of working with "X-Men 3" director Brett Ratner since she was also on "Rush Hour 2" which was directed by him. Psylocke has had several roles in the Marvel comic series, but this is the first time that she will team up with Magneto's (Ian McKellen) Brotherhood of Mutants to torment the X-Men.
Psylocke has special skills including the ability of transporting herself as well as other villains through shadows. She is also known for her fighting qualities and telepathic abilities. X-men 3 will star Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry and is set for a May 26 Memorial Day release. Melancon was also seen in the HBO series "Deadwood" prior to landing the role of Psylocke.
The filming is reportedly progressing at full speed and rumors of Psylocke's inclusion began surfacing from Vancouver last week, according to The Hollywood Reporter. X-Men 3 is the joint production of 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment.

Mei Melancon has signed on to play mutant assassin Psylocke in X-Men 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter and a scooper who just emailed us and was on set to back up the report.
Psylocke is a regular from the comics and will battle the X-men. She has the ability to transport herself through telepathy and shadows.
No story has been confirmed for the third installment of the X-Men films, I think its safe to say that the third part will revolve around the Phoenix saga. Reports indicate the producers want to skip ahead and go straight into the Dark Phoenix story. New characters rumored to be in "X3" include Gambit, Beast, Angel, Psylocke, Emma Frost, Dazzler, Juggernaut and possibly the Sentinels.

Berry Happy Storm Flies in X3
Halle says she's glad her weather-wielding character takes to the air in the third film. Plus, another Wolverine? And Arclight makes a cameo.
"I've worn this cape for two movies now and I never flew,"Halle Berry, who returns as Storm for the third time in X3, told Extra. "And the fans would see me on the street and say, 'You know, how lame are you -- you don't even fly."
In the first X3 teaser trailer, Storm is seen twirling in a spin manuever that Berry performed herself, she said in the interview. "After two X-Men films and Catwoman, Berry was reluctant to get back into a super-hero role," Extra said. "But, between the X3 script and meeting with director Brett Ratner, she decided to come back."
"If I was going to be there, I just wanted to have something to do," Berry said.
Meanwhile, X3 director Brett Ratner had a Christmas/Hanukkah card made up depicting himself as Wolverine with the rest of the cast (see below). In the card, he refers to himself as Wolverstein, according to Defamer.com.
X3 wrapped principal photography in Vancouver late last month and now moves to post-production for its May 26 release.
Also, Arclight will be cast as a member of Magneto's Brotherhood in the film, according to Comics Continuum. Arclight was a member of the Marauders in the comics.

t is beginning to look like X-Men 3 might witness the same recovery that V for Vendetta did. After hitting more than its fair share of speedbumps and directors, the film has rebounded with solid buzz, a nice teaser and a confident cast & crew.
Stewart Talks X-Men 3
A while back we had posted a couple of articles that featured the possibility of X-Men 3 being the best yet for the film franchise. Now, we don't want to get ahead of ourselves on this one, especially considering how solid we thought X2 was, but now we have Mr. Patrick Stewart (Professor X) claiming that the script for X-Men 3 is the best he has seen yet. Hurray!
Sci Fi Pulse recently caught wind that the latest issue of Dreamwatch sat down with Patrick Stewart to discuss his role in the drama series 11th Hour plus his return to the X-Men film franchise. Besides mentioning positive comments about X-Men 3, the actor gave the film one of the ultimate compliments.

'X-Men 3' Has Another Villain in Melancon
January 02, 2006
By Tatiana Siegel
20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment have added another lethal component to "X-Men 3." Mei Melancon has joined the cast of the comic book-inspired sequel as the evil mutant assassin Psylocke.
Melancon, who appeared in Brett Ratner's "Rush Hour 2," is reteaming with the helmer for the third installment of the superhero franchise.
Word began leaking last week from the Vancouver set that the latest "X-Men" installment would introduce the character Psylocke, who has had several incarnations in the Marvel comic book series and is best known for her fighting and telepathic skills as well as an ability to transport herself and others through shadows. In the film, she will fight against the X-Men as a member of Magneto's (Ian McKellen) Brotherhood of Mutants.
"X-Men 3," which is penned by Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn, is set to bow May 26, on Memorial Day weekend.
Melancon's credits also include the HBO series "Deadwood."

Though Bryan Singer has been replaced by the less-competent Brett Ratner, early footage suggests lots of hearty mutant action. And with all of the principal actors reprising their previous roles, the film looks like it should be, at least, a serviceable follow-up to the first two films. Scheduled for release May 26.

X-Men 3 - Based on everything we've seen so far, this one looks like it's going to kick major ass. The only thing I'm worried about is that there will be so many freaking characters; we'll have a hard time keeping track of all of them. The biggie will be seeing what Brett Ratner does with the film after it's been in the hands of Bryan Singer for the previous two X-Men installments. I am of the opinion that his involvement will either make or break the entire franchise. Singer has done a fantastic job up until this point and so, Brett, my man, this one is all you.

Psylock set for X-Men 3
The 'X-Men 3' juggernaut has continued the expansion of its cast by signing on Filipino actress Mei Melancon to play the role of superhero Betsy Braddock, aka Psylocke.
Fans of the superhero epic X-Men will be pleased at the casting announcement as the first two films in the franchise were shot without Psylocke, a character many ardent fans believe to be integral to the crime-fighting mutant superhero team.
Actress Melancon, through signing on for 'X-Men 3', is set to reunite with director Brett Ratner after a short, yet highly coveted role in the comedy 'Rush Hour 2' as 'Girl in Car'.
However, according to Empireonline.co.uk, Psylock will not be joining the X-Men ranks as such but will instead fight under Magneto's banner as a member of his Brotherhood of Mutants.

This year, April showers will bring May flowers, especially at the movies. If there's any month to circle on the calendar, it's May, which features four of 2006's biggest films: Mission: Impossible III (May 5), Poseidon (May 12), The Da Vinci Code (May 19) and X-Men 3 (May 26). If you're keeping track, that's two sequels and a remake among the four. That theme continues into the summer with Superman Returns (June 30), the fourth movie about the Man of Steel; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, a sequel that picks up with Capt. Jack (Johnny Depp); and Miami Vice (July 28), a remake of the TV show, starring Colin Farrell.
• X-Men 3 (Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen; May 26): Dr. Xavier (Stewart) and Magneto (McKellen) head opposing forces that clash after a cure for mutations is discovered.
Quick take: Two movies were enough for Bryan Singer, who leaves the director's chair to Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, The Family Man). Uh oh.

Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (June 30) doesn't look as sure-fire after Batman Begins didn't make a convincing case for updating superheroes. Much depends on whether newcomer Brandon Routh (rhymes with "south") has more star appeal than the trailers suggest.
Singer chose that project over directing X-Men 3 (May 26) after guiding the first two Marvel Comics-inspired films. His replacement, Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon), isn't in the same league, and third installments of any franchise historically are disappointing.

X-MEN 3
Release Date - May 26th
We'll admit that it's possible X3 won't be as great as X1 or X2 but the recently released trailer certainly gave us tons of hope. If nothing else, coupling Brett Ratner's considerable skill in crafting a good action setpiece with the wide array of mutants and their powers should make for some spectacular sequences.

Screenwriter Zak Penn provided The Continuum with an update on X3, which recently wrapped photography in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"The film is posting right now. Editors are editing. Effects guys are effecting. Sound mixers are mixing their sound," Penn said.
"There won't be too many mutants. You never know about a movie before it's done, but it has a good chance of owning everyone's collective ass."

The PopWatch Interview: Hugh Jackman on 'X-Men 3'
Word is X-Men's Wolverine is getting some new moves. Freshman mutants in the movie franchise, like Angel and Beast, hog all the buzz these days, but don't expect the vet to sit on the sidelines filing his claws. In fact, Hugh Jackman, who plays the hotheaded, cigar-smoking superhero, recently told Entertainment Weekly's Neil Drumming that X-Men 3, directed by Brett Ratner and opening May 26, will roll out a much more refined Wolvie.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What's different about Wolverine 3.0?
HUGH JACKMAN: We tried to incorporate a little more of some of the artwork of the comics into Wolverine's fighting style. I was very adamant at the beginning in 1 and 2 -- I used to watch tapes of Mike Tyson -- and I was like, I don't want it to be pretty. I don't want it to be martial arts. I don't want him to be anything other than, like, a street fighter. He doesn't fight for the sake of fighting. If he can take someone's head off in the first punch, he'll take it off. Simon [Crane, stunt coordinator for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Troy, and both Tomb Raiders] kind of convinced me and we worked on some styles of incorporating some of the artwork in the comics, which is a little stylized, more to use what his strength is -- which is [that he's] small. Me, I'm actually a tall man, so that took a little training and I worked hard on that.
So here's the big question: Will fans of the comic book be satisfied -- especially since Bratt Ratner is new to the franchise?
Oh, yeah. There's a lot of things we really tried to get in 1 and 2 which -- I don't mean to be blunt -- were just real expensive and we couldn't get them in until 1 and 2 were so successful. So there's some sequences there that the fans -- if you go to that midnight screening on the first night, they'll just be going ballistic. There's some specific choreography, famous fighting moves, that we use in this movie that we haven't been able to do before.
The fans have been the foundation of the success of this movie and they're never forgotten. Trust me. No decision is made without considering the history of each character. You don't want to come in and just rewrite the history books. And let's face it: If I do a disservice to Wolverine, I can easily be spat on in the street.
What's up with a possible Wolverine spin-off?
I'm into it. We're actually working on a script. X-Men is an ensemble movie, even if some characters are in it more than others. It's about the X-Men. I love playing the part. I think it's the best part going around. I may be biased, but I think there's so much still to be mined, still to be learned from that [character]. I think it will stand up to a feature-length movie. And we've had some really amazing interests from some great filmmakers and great writers also really intrigued by the character.
Would you consider writing it yourself?
I will always put my input in from the actor's point of view. At this point I feel like I know the character, from some perspective, incredibly well, so I will always have a lot to say. But no.

Jackman talks Wolverine movie
Posted Jan 10th 2006 10:33AM by Mark Beall (http://www.cinematical.com/bloggers/mark-beall)

Hugh Jackman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0413168/) could make a serious case for being the single biggest posterboy for the Marvel (http://www.marvel.com/) movie deluge of the last several years (although he'd probably lose to Toby the Webslinger (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001497/)). At any rate, he certainly scores among the most popular cinematic super heroes, and with his third performance as Wolverine in the X-Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0376994/) films, and an upcoming Wolvey-centric film slated, he stands to become the most long-running character of the modern super hero actors (I think. Feel free to correct me if I'm forgetting someone here). In a recent interview, Jackman discussed Wolverine's role in the new film, as well as the upcoming title feature (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458525/). He indicated that he's been very adamant about keeping Wolverine as an all out brawling street-fighter, not martial arts or anything "pretty." He just hits to hurt. He also said that in the newest X-film, he expects audiences to be wowed ("going ballistic") over some of the fight choreography. Sounds good to me so far.
In discussing his title film, Jackman has nothing but good things to say. He's excited, he's anxious, and he loves the character. "I may be biased, but I think there's so much still to be mined, still to be learned from that [character]." He also notes that while he is certainly willing to offer his take on the character and his point of view, he has no interest in taking any form of directorial role in the upcoming film.
If you are a regular reader of this site, you'll know that I'm not particularly optimistic about the upcoming X3. Like many Marvel geeks, I worry that the train has finally gotten out of control. However, I will say that I love Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine, and I think he does a fantastic job representing the character. Silver lining to the dark X-cloud? Probably. I'm still interested in the direction the Wolverine movie will choose to take...

I worked for the main French company, I came in London where I've been working for almost 3 years - on big projects. It's a pleasure to work here on this kind of projects. I think my dreams are not over yet. I have a lot to do. But hush!
You are currently working on XMEN3 -- can you tell us anything about it at all or are your lips sealed with a NDA ;-))?
Sorry, you'll have to wait for the release in the theater to ask me this question.
You reside in the UK to work on XMEN3; any plans on moving to North America, Australia or back to France permanently? Are you going to stay in the CGI industry indefinitely -- what are you plans for the future?
I know that I would like to stay one more year in the UK, and after that I have a few wishes and desires. I would to stay awhile in the CG industry. Now I'm starting to think what I'm going to do in ten years. If I'm going back to work in France? Before that time, I am sure an interesting project will appear. When that time comes, I'll want to have an interesting position (CG or VFX).Source: http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/community/behind_the_screenz_details.jsp?itemId=11100001&view=interview&_requestid=275361

Wolverine loves working for Ratner
By Joshua Tyler Jan 9, 2006, 21:03 GMT
While most fans are feeling pretty nervous about what will become of their beloved ‘X-Men’ franchise in the unpredictable (and not in a good way) hands of director Brett Ratner’s, Hugh Jackman wants everyone to know that hey… it’s going to be great.
Jackman spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming X-projects and seems pretty positive. It’s going to be one hell of a spectacle: “There's a lot of things we really tried to get in 1 and 2 which - I don't mean to be blunt - were just real expensive and we couldn't get them in until 1 and 2 were so successful.”
That sounds great Hugh! What about the film’s story? He adds, “So there's some sequences there that the fans - if you go to that midnight screening on the first night, they'll just be going ballistic. There's some specific choreography, famous fighting moves, that we use in this movie that we haven't been able to do before.”
Check. Great effects, cool action. But script? Story? No mention of that, in regards to ‘X3”, but Hugh is even more excited about his upcoming X-Men spinoff movie ‘Wolverine’. “I'm into it," he says. "We're actually working on a script…I love playing the part. I think it's the best part going around.” Hasn’t the character already been explored in the ‘X-Men’ films? Hugh says there’s more to be uncovered. “I may be biased, but I think there's so much still to be mined, still to be learned from that [character]. I think it will stand up to a feature-length movie.”

From compassacademy.org:
In September, we took a group of students to Vancouver on Academy 201 , our week-long industry trip. This trip gave them the opportunity to visit the set of X-men 3, a movie produced by Ralph Winter, a member of our advisory board. This trip is an eye-opener for the alumni and for many, it is their first real taste of the industry. Mike Wekall, a member of our Board of Directors was able to participate on this trip and comments on his experience:
What a valuable and extremely rewarding experience. I wish all of you would have the opportunity to go on one of these trips.
One of the first things that I observed was how much respect our students received from all of the people we met. During one of the breaks on the film set of X-Men 3, the First Assistant Director took 45 minutes to tell the students stories of his career and give strong advice on assessing their potential future in motion pictures. There were many other people who took precious time to chat with the students.
One of the most rewarding opportunities I experienced was the time in the car, traveling to and from, when we had time to share personal ideas and experiences. There were many great “teaching moments” where I was able to challenge the students to incorporate God into the people, places and things and draw a Christian worldview into their experiences. Patrick's star trek from Hollywood becomes a happy return
When Patrick Stewart left Hollywood he didn't know what to expect. But after 18 months back in the UK he tells Grace Hammond why he's happier than ever.
Patrick Stewart is having "the best time in life in every possible way".
Having relocated to Los Angeles from the UK, he made his name as the captain of the Starship Enterprise, but the move also saw him having to leave behind his stage career.
Before he moved across the Atlantic, in 1987, to head up the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, he had established himself as a respected theatre actor, working for the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the Royal National Theatre.
There had been TV and film roles as well, most notably in the BBC's 1975 adaptation of North And South and in the 1981 film, Excalibur, but nothing that made him a household name.
That would come with Star Trek, and later the X-Men films. But, nearly 20 years after he'd left, Stewart decided it was time to come home for good to the UK.
"I missed the career that I'd been building here," says the 65-year-old of his return. "Don't get me wrong, what happened in the States was absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't change any of that.
"But I missed England as well. I missed the detail of being here, of picking up references, of feeling the fabric of English life around me, in all its subtlety and complexity – and infuriating aspects," he laughs.
The Yorkshire-born actor has, of course, had no trouble picking up his career in the UK, or, as he puts it, "if I had fantasised about how I'd like to be spending my time on my return, this past year would have been it".
It began with a Mamet play in the West End, followed by the filming of two television roles. The first was in Ricky Gervais's Extras. A last-minute replacement for Jude Law, Stewart played an exaggerated version of himself.
The second is the thriller, Eleventh Hour, a new drama from ITV in which he plays Professor Ian Hood, a physics professor serving as a special adviser to the British Government.
With his Special Branch bodyguard, Rachel Young, played by Extras star Ashley Jensen, Hood is charged with investigating disasters caused by modern science. Each of the four episodes covers a scientific hot potato – cloning, disease control, global warming and finding a cure for cancer.
"Having played many roles of scientific intellect, I do have an empathy for that world," says Stewart. "One of the things I miss about living in the States is the weekly science supplement in the New York Times. It was written for people like me who know nothing about science. It's been hard on me because flying the Enterprise for seven years (in Star Trek) and sitting in Cerebro (in X-Men) has led people to believe that I know what I'm talking about," he laughs.
"But I'm still trying to work out how to operate the air-conditioning unit on my car."
After picking up his old life in British television, he made a quick return to his Hollywood existence, to film the third instalment in the X-Men franchise, in Vancouver, Canada. There's been drama behind the camera as well as in front with X-Men 3, with the original director, Bryan Singer, bowing out to do Superman Returns. Then his replacement, Matthew Vaughn, dropped out because of "family conflicts", to be replaced by Brett Ratner.
"There's no reason this should worry the fans," says Stewart. "It's true, by the time Brett came on board it was almost too late to start pre-production. You can imagine a film like this requires a lot of preparation.
"But Brett, in every possible way, hit the ground running with this project. I do know that everybody is working just 48 hours ahead of what's being prepped, and the pressure on them is enormous. But the script, I believe, is the best of the three."
Since filming X-Men 3, Stewart has headed back to the stage. He has completed a December run of his one-man version of A Christmas Carol, and at the end of this month begins a 16-month stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company, with whom he's not worked for more than 20 years.
"Going back to the RSC is the culmination of a dream that I've had for years," says Stewart, "and for a long time I thought it wouldn't happen.
"I'm going to play Antony in Antony And Cleopatra, and Prospero in The Tempest and anything else they throw my way in the next 16 months."
The actor's sunny demeanour isn't just to do with his career, however. It's also to do with his romance with 25-year-old actress Lisa Dillon, with whom he lives in central London.
After three years of marriage to Star Trek producer Wendy Neuss, Stewart was divorced in 2003, another reason he was to leave LA. He met Lisa Dillon that same year, when she auditioned for a part in the Ibsen play, The Master Builder, in which he was appearing.
His private life is off limits for discussion, however, with him only saying, "When I say I'm having the best time in my life, it's more than professionally, it's in every possible way".
He is a little more open about his health, which has also been under scrutiny in the past year. In May last year, he was taken to hospital for a check-up after feeling unwell on the set of Eleventh Hour. After undergoing an angioplasty in 2004, stories that he'd suffered a heart attack were quickly reported in relation to his hospital visit, but Stewart says they were blown out of proportion.
"The producer took me to A&E for a check-up and I was back on set in the afternoon, running down stairs and throwing myself in front of a car," he says. "The story was enraging because I was then on the phone all night to reassure my family and friends.
"I went back to LA and saw all my doctors in August, one year after my angioplasty. They have given me a 100 per cent clean bill of health and said, 'Whatever you're doing, keep doing it'.
"I work out with a personal trainer three times a week and I do my own exercises on the other days as well. I love it and it feels great. Also, I'm playing Marc Antony in the spring and I've got to look like a warrior somehow."
Eleventh Hour, ITV, January 19, 9pm.

The Los Angeles Times also offered up a slightly different photo of Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Hank McCoy.
Meanwhile, Superhero Hype has a scooper report about actor Vinnie Jones discussing his involvement with the franchise. e was asked about his superpowers in the movie and he said about Juggernaut that "when he gets going, he's just invincible ... he runs through walls, smashes everything in sight ... he gets asked to join Ian McKellen's (Magneto) band of warriors to take on the X-Men." There's more mutant madness in Jones' future, apparently, as he said "I've signed for 'X-Men 3,' 4' and '5' ... that's my contract ... yes."

I think it fits. It sounds dark and mysterious.
That kind of thing is fine for a trailer, but i hope they stick with something a little more classy for the actuall score of the movie...keep the same tone of the last two.

Putting you in the picture…
BY CARL JONES
The Christmas presents have been unwrapped, the festive fun is over for another year, and we’re all in need of something to look forward to … perhaps this box of cinema goodies will do the trick.
With no new releases hitting our screens this weekend, what better time to take a peek into the future and see what’s in store for Shropshire film fans in 2006.
It’s a mouthwatering mixture of action, drama and comedy, laced with lashings of nostalgia and no doubt topped with its fair share of cheese.
January is traditionally the time for the 2006 Oscar big-hitters to arrive on screen, and the best of the bunch looks set to be Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee’s adaptation of the E. Annie Proulx story about a forbidden and secretive relationship between two cowboys and their lives over the years, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Memoirs Of A Geisha, directed by Oscar-winner Rob Marshall which tells how one woman transcended her fishing-village roots to become one of Japan’s most celebrated geisha, is another January gem expected to be in the running come Academy Awards night.
Other January highlights include Pierce Brosnan’s Golden Globe-nominated performance in The Matador, Woody Allen’s latest social satire Match Point, and Steven Spielberg’s Munich, inspired by the 1972 Olympics, which reveals how a Mossad agent (Eric Bana) tracks Palestinian terrorists who assassinated Israeli athletes.
Charlize Theron turns secret agent in February in the sci-fi whodunnit Aeon Flux, while the hugely satisfying teen horror franchise Final Destination finally reaches just that with its third instalment.
March sees the eagerly awaited return of two cinema favourites. First up is Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct 2, a follow-up to the steamy thriller which featured that famous leg-crossing scene and catapulted her on to the Hollywood A-list.
Stone’s novelist Catherine Tramell is once again in trouble with the law, and Scotland Yard psychiatrist Dr Andrew Glass (David Morrissey) is sent to evaluate her. Like Michael Douglas’s detective in the 1992 original, he is lured into a seductive game.
Then, with a degree of trepidation, comes Steve Martin’s attempt to step into the late Peter Sellers’ shoes as bungling Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther, which is a prequel to the original movies. Let’s hope it’s more amusing than his latest comedy offering, Cheaper by the Dozen 2.
April sees a shower of sequels. Disney will have its work cut out to make Ice Age 2 as original and mischievously fun as the first chapter, and the Scary Movie team will need to pull out all the stops to offer something new and original in its fourth instalment.
But if it’s big-screen blockbusters you’re looking for, May and July look like the months to choose.
May sees the return of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 3, while Tom Hanks leads a star-studded cast who will seek to crack The Da Vinci Code as the best selling book makes its eagerly awaited screen debut. X-Men 3 completes a hat-trick of mouthwatering May offerings.
Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp return to the high seas in July for the second Pirates Of The Caribbean movie — they’ve already filmed the third, so this had better be a success!
But the film which will be hyped above all other (probably alongside Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond in November) is the return of caped crusader Superman.
Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the shape of hunk Sam Worthington. While an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realisation that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life. Or has she?
If Superman Returns promises to bridge the gap between emotional drama and blockbusting action in the same way as Spider-Man, it will be a monster success, and fitting memory to the late Christopher Reeve.Source: http://www.shropshirestar.com/show_article.php?aID=40764

Production in B.C.
B.C. considers cutting production tax credits
A new report has the B.C. government considering it
by Ilona Beiks and Mark Dillon
page 21
A new report commissioned by the Government of British Columbia suggesting the province would be better off without film and TV production tax credits has ignited a wave of protest in the local industry.
The study, titled Film and Television Industry Review and prepared by InterVISTAS Consulting, was commissioned last March and posted in November on the website for the B.C. Ministry of Economic Development, with highlights appearing simultaneously in a Vancouver Sun story. The newspaper article shocked many industry players who had neither been contacted to participate nor notified in advance of the results. While acknowledging positive contributions the industry makes to B.C.'s economy, the report also concludes the province would be $46 million richer per year without production tax credits.
The report arrives less than a year after the industry successfully lobbied the government to raise the province's tax credits on par with increased credits in Ontario and Quebec, the country's other major production centers. The tax credit for foreign productions shooting in B.C. was raised to 18% from 11%, while it was upped to 30% from 20% for domestic productions. But the province included the proviso that these were only temporary measures to be revisited after March 2006, calling on the industry to find solutions of its own for maintaining healthy production levels.
Specifically, the province has pointed to labor and location costs and levels of service as areas that need to be improved in order to stimulate competitiveness. Top of mind are findings from 2004's Tysoe Report, which criticized the practices of some key B.C. unions.
The new report's findings, based on average production levels of the past five years, and preceding the recent tax-credit increases, include:
* Nearly 24,000 jobs in B.C. are directly or indirectly attributable to the film and TV industry.
* The film and TV industry annually generates $121 million in tax revenues for the provincial government.
* Higher labor costs contribute to a greater likelihood that productions will take their business elsewhere.
* The industry receives $66 million in tax credits. The tax credits, in turn, attract $192 million in additional production, which generates $20 million in additional provincial tax revenues. In short, $66 million in tax credits translates into only $20 million in tax revenue.
* Eliminating the tax credits would result in an estimated 15% decline in production spending.
The InterVISTAS report is one factor the province will consider as it evaluates tax-credit incentives for the next fiscal year.
Minister of Economic Development Colin Hansen expresses caution about fully embracing the study's results, which are being accused of inaccuracy by many in the B.C. industry.
"[The report] was informative, not definitive," Hansen tells Playback. "I'm not endorsing it as a be-all. We wanted to put it out right away, so that we could get feedback from everyone.
"The film industry has a big impact on our economy. We didn't have any data before this report to substantiate that, and now we do." He is quick to add "there is no question that tax credits have a threshold," and questions whether it is feasible for them to continue at the current level.
"I think it would be very difficult for the industry to ask for an extension on tax credits until they've done everything they committed to when we agreed to raise the tax credits. They have made some measures, but they have a ways to go," he says, without offering specifics.
Local industry representatives counter that eliminating tax credits would spell disaster for the production sector.
Peter Leitch, Lions Gate Studios president and chair of lobby group the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of British Columbia, is among those who dispute the study's conclusions and accuse the paper of "inaccuracies and flawed reporting."
Leitch takes issue with the report's claim that the industry would suffer a drop of only 15% in production spending if the tax credits were eliminated.
"This would be the case if all tax credits globally were eliminated at the same time," Leitch argues. "But look at 2003 and 2004 production volumes in B.C. *- they tell a different story."
According to the annual Profile report released by the CFTPA, foreign production volume in B.C. - which accounts for at least 75% of overall spending there - dropped from $857 million in 2001/02 (12-month cycle ending March 31) to $830 million in 2002/03. 2003/04 actually noted a 49% increase over the previous year, although this is accepted as grossly misleading because the province hosted a few extraordinarily big-budget Hollywood films that skewed the numbers. (Numbers for 2004/05 will become available next month.)
A number of U.S. states outside of California, along with countries around the world, started offering Canadian-style tax credits in the past couple of years, which has taken a significant bite out of B.C. service work, as has a strengthening Canadian dollar.
"Experience has shown that without matching tax credits to other jurisdictions, we have a 75% drop in revenues," Leitch says. "And once productions leave or cease to come, we look at what we do with our production space. And if we alter it to storage or something else, we won't be converting it back - it's gone."
In the wake of the tax-credit increases, the province enjoyed a strong 2005, hosting many major Hollywood movies, including the third X-Men feature, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Wrong Element starring Harrison Ford.
Uptick acknowledged
B.C. film commissioner Susan Croome, who wouldn't speak to the report as she is a provincial employee, acknowledges the uptick.
"We don't have the numbers in yet, but after a slow start in the first quarter, yes, we [did see] a more robust year than 2004," she says.
Leitch, in explaining the resurgence, says, "Other currencies around the world strengthened in line with the Canadian dollar, more productions got greenlit, and more TV came up [in 2005]." But, of course, the increased tax credits were key.
Before B.C. hiked its incentives, Vancouver prodco Brightlight Pictures, makers of the highly profitable feature White Noise, as well as its in-the-works sequel (see story, p. 22), threatened to take $100 million in production out of the province and into Ontario for the higher tax credits.
"Producers look at the bottom line, and tax credits figure into it," says Brightlight producer Stephen Hegyes.
Entertainment lawyer Arthur Evrensel, a partner at Heenan Blaikie in Vancouver, says the report's conclusions are incorrect and unsubstantiated.
"[It] even states that it 'does not necessarily represent the full range of costs and benefits associated with the film/TV industry that should be considered when assessing the tax credits,'" Evrensel says. "So what's the point?"
The unions believe that they have done their part to help business, and hope the government will meet them halfway.
"We have worked at discounted rates and rolled back conditions for years," says Gerry Rutherford, business agent for IATSE Local 669. "The Canadian dollar has gone up, and while it was rising, unions have been working and reworking our contracts, modifying them as necessary to work within the budget of major shows."
The industry saw the tax-credit increases as necessary at the time, as the declining value of the American greenback north of the border made shooting in B.C. less attractive. Many in the industry are calling on the government to help keep B.C. on a level playing field with other jurisdictions, however that is achieved.
Rutherford suggests a tax credit that increases and decreases relative to the value of the loonie, keeping production costs stable and competitive regardless of currency fluctuations.
Stakeholders are willing to help the government find solutions - but they don't count ditching tax credits among those.
"We've all stepped up to the plate across the industry, and the government did when [it] increased the tax credits in January," Rutherford says. "And that's what it takes - everyone working together."

Santa Clarita maps bigscreen 'Fun'
By BASHIRAH MUTTALIB
Santa Clarita, Calif., looms large on the bigscreen. Columbia Pictures found the location ideal for many of its scenes during the remake of the 1977 feature pic "Fun With Dick and Jane."
Santa Clarita provided locations not found in L.A. proper just to the south as well as affording cast and crew the luxury of returning to their own beds at night.
"Fun With Dick and Jane" was one of more than 45 features shot in the Santa Clarita Valley. Others included "The Dukes of Hazzard," "War of the Worlds," "X-Men 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" Nos. 2 and 3.
Reporting more than 1,200 days of location filming to date in 2005, Santa Clarita's Film Office reports a 23% increase in the number of film permits issued for the first quarter of the 2005-06 fiscal year vs. last year.
Santa Clarita Valley, located in a 30-mile zone, reaps most of its production revenue from TV. HBO's "Deadwood," "NCIS," "The Unit," "Windfall" and "Big Love" are keeping the soundstages rolling, while "CSI" relocated but continues to shoot on location in the area, and "JAG" folded its production tent.

Oregon's Production Investment Fund (OPIF) is paying filming dividends. Created by the state's governor, productions spending $1 million minimum receive a 10% rebate on expenditures.
"My first priority is to grow Oregon's economy, and that includes expanding the film industry in Oregon," Gov. Ted Kulongoski said.
Hallmark Hall of Fame, in addition to several other productions, is taking advantage of the program to lense its next telepic, "The Valley of Light," skedded to air in 2006 on CBS.
Pic, based on Terry Kay's novel, is exec produced by Richard Welsh ("Back When We Were Grownups"). Andrew Gottlieb will produce with Brent Shields, who will also direct. Scribe is Camille Thomasson ("The Magic of Ordinary Days"). Chris Klein and Gretchen Mol star.

Film Liaisons in California (Flics) has stepped up its efforts to promote and retain film production in the state and further the common interests of all statewide local film offices.
With that goal in mind, Flics reorganized to form a nonprofit corporation in June. The collaboration, encompassing nearly 60 local film offices throughout California, will help promote various regions of the state, assist filmmakers and create a marketing strategy to attract productions to the state.
Amy Lemisch, director of the California Film Commission (CFC), and Ray Arthur, Flics Corp. chairman, solidified efforts with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Flics' nonprofit arm and the CFC at the latter org's quarterly board meeting in Beverly Hills.
"These two organizations have always had a positive and productive relationship," said Arthur, who also heads the Ridgecrest Regional Film Commission. "With increased competition from other states and countries, the diverse regions of the state must work together to help fight the flow of production out of the state."Source:

Extra second plays havoc with Hollywood blockbusters
News that timekeepers will delay the start of the New Year for one second on all official clocks is playing hell with the plots of Hollywood's tentpole pictures.
True, the international agreement only requires the addition of a so-called "leap second" to syncronize official atomic clocks with the earth's rotation.
But the offically sanctioned delay has unforseen consequences, with most major Hollywood studios using the "last second" to cut critical red wires on timebombs, or for protagonists to kick open doors and rescue damsels just moments before a fiery explosion.
"We didn't see this coming," said Tom Rothman, co-chairman of Twentieth Century Fox, adding, "And quite honestly, we're screwed: It's jeopardizing the dramatic outcomes of both "X Men 3" and "Fantastic Four 2." There are two spectacular set-pieces that both require last-second rescues, and now the timing is all off. We're totally f-cked."

'X-Men 3' actor Vinnie Jones likes working for Brett Ratner so much that once he finishes playing a mutant for him, he’ll join Ratner again on the set of 'Rush Hour 3'.
Jones plays the mutant heavy Juggernaut in the third 'X-Men' movie, due out this summer. Vinnie confirmed his 'Rush' casting on an Irish television station this weekend.
We’ve heard no confirmation yet on exactly what part the rough and tumble actor will play in the Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker sequel, but it seems likely he’ll play another tough guy, probably a villain.
'Rush Hour 3' is currently still in early pre-production, though Jackie Chan and Christ Tucker have already signed up to return to the franchise as has director Brett Ratner. With Ratner working on 'X3' till at least this summer, work on 'Rush Hour 3' probably won’t begin in earnest until the latter half of 2006. Right now it’s slated for release in August of 2007.

“X-Men 3”
Although the X-Men franchise is going on without director Bryan Singer (who swapped X-Men with Brett Ratner, the original director of Superman Returns), it doesn’t look like it will lose any of its appeal. The new trailer can be viewed at www.apple.com.
According to the movie’s Web site, X3 will revolve around a cure being found for the mutant condition; once it goes public the lines are drawn between the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. Kelsey Grammer of “Frasier” comes into the fold as the blue-furred Beast, along with a host of other new characters, including The Angel and Juggernaut. The film opens May 26.

Plot details are currently pretty sketchy, but here's what rumor would have you believe of the thrid X-Men film's story: It's likely the the film revisits some of the same ideas from previous X-Films. There's a mutant whose mutant ability is being harnassed into something to kill off other mutans by mutant-haters. The X-Men have to stop him. Halle Berry gets the biggest role, and several other, more interesting and important X-Men may die. Somewhere in the mix may be Sentinels, and the Phoenix saga, which I'm not going to explain if you don't already know about it for fear of spoilers. According to people involved, the Phoenix will only be at best a secondary stoyline to the tired old premise of mutant-killing superweapon.
Ditched by Bryan Singer for the higher-profile (and less likely to be good) next Superman movie, X3 remains a bit of a confusing mess, even the cast is uncertain. Brett Ratner is definitely the man helming it, and though he's a capable director, capable of making a decent film, he needs the right circumstances in which to do it. These don't look like the right circumstances. The film is being tampered with heavily by Fox executives. The script sounds terrible, and Halle Berry appears to be taking over the franchise and pushing all the other established characters right out. Brett Ratner is packing the movie with more new mutant characters than you can shake a stick at, the thing has to be headed for character overload. And it's not as if any of them are good characters, they're all throwaway people from the comics... I mean X3 will actually have a MUTANT WHORE. Meanwhile, fantastic characters like Nightcrawler won't even be making an appearance and other beloved characters from the previous films are rumored to be dead quite early on in the movie to make more room for Halle Berry to hog the screen. It's a grade A disastor in the making, and the once luminous X-men series is on the verge of meltdown. It's hard to believe this movie will be any good.
There are a few bright spots. The casting of Kelsey Grammar as Beast is an interesting, and unconventional choice. He could bring something great to the movie. Ok, actually that's the only bright spot. Unless there's some sort of drastic change in the production, this movie is doomed doomed doomed. It's a shame, X2 was an amazing, wonderful film that set things up perfectly for the franchise to continue. Fox is flushing all of that and the X-Men franchise along with it.

He does seem like a bit of an outright negative person, he doesn't even think Superman Returns will be good. So Stacy X was a whore in the X-Men comics, that doesn't mean they're gonna transfer those characteristics into her character on film. I dunno how he knows the film is being tampered with by Fox executives - he most likely doesn't know! Same goes for the rumoured script which even AICN, at the time of their rumoured script exposee realised there were good/positive aspects - good news considering that rumoured script was a very early draft which has presumably gone through re-writes and been improved upon. This is exactly what I was mentioning earlier, I really hope Ratner pulls off X3 and is heavily vindicated, with idiots like this finding they actually liked the film, although whether they admit it or not is another thing!

Just posted on the AP/Yahoo News service in their 2006 preview:
X3" (May 26): Those marvelous mutants return for what could be the final chapter in the "X-Men" saga. The whole crew is back, including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn and Famke Janssen, whose character seemingly died a watery death at the end of "X2: X-Men United."
With Singer moving on to "Superman Returns," directing duties fell to Brett Ratner, maker of the "Rush Hour" flicks.
This time out, the superpowered mutants find themselves slowly being more accepted into a society that feared them as freaks, only to face new turmoil when a "cure" is discovered for their mutant condition.
"If you could actually get rid of your special power which alienates you from the rest of the world, would you do it?" said Jackman, who reprises his role as Wolverine. "It's a metaphor very much about intolerance, I think, fear of anything that's different. If you could choose to not be Jewish or not be gay or not be African-American. Life maybe is not as easy if you're a minority. Would you take the opportunity to change that if you could?"
Jackman said "X3" would conclude the "X-Men" trilogy, though a Wolverine solo movie is in the works.

I wouldn't care if you told me it's directed by the guy who made Glitter (though it's actually the much-maligned Brett Ratner), the new teaser for X3 looks pretty darn enticing. True, there's not a whole lot to go on, but the mere sight of Wolverine, Storm (sporting a fetching new 'do), and Jean Grey (or should I say Phoenix?) makes me forget there's icky, gray slush on the ground, and fast-forwards me right into summer blockbuster season. Not only that, but the awesome sight of Six Feet Under's Ben Foster unfurling his wings as Angel is enough to counteract the fact that my least favorite character, ho-hum Cyclops, is back for the third installment in the X-Men series, due May 26, 2006.

Vinnie Jones spills a bit about The Juggernaut!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint (quint@aintitcool.com) here with a nice healthy rumor about the character of Juggernaut, supposedly from the lips of the big behemoth himself, Vinnie Jones. It's not much, but when it comes to a series like the X-Men films every little tidbit adds up. I hope Ratner delivers the goods. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm semi-optimistic. No matter what, I really like the casting of Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut. Let's see how the character is executed onscreen. Let's hope those one-liners he mentions aren't too horrible.
Just a titbit from here in Sunny England, not sure if you have heard any of this before but here we go.
Just watching an interview with soccer hard man turned actor Vinny Jones on a morning show called GMTV. Vinny was at a charity poker tournament, where 1 of the items under auction was his chair from the set of xmen 3. When asked about the film he said he had go through 4 hours of makeup every morning to get ready for the role of juggernaut, which included the boots. He also said that he had some good 1 liners in the movie, & that his character, although he didnt have much screen time, played an important role in the film.
Move importantly he revealed that he has signed for Xmen 4 & 5 !!!!!!!!
Hope this is of some interest.

“X-Men 3”: Brett Ratner took a perfectly good film subject, blew it to hell and then hired Sideshow Bob to wear a furry blue costume. I can’t wait for the streaming fanboy masses to leave the theater, march to Hollywood and burn Ratner before he can make “Rush Hour 3: Chris Tucker is Broke!”

Vinnie Jones felt "underused" in 'X-Men 3'
Saturday, January 21 2006, 11:58 GMT -- by Daniel Kilkelly
Vinnie Jones has admitted that he feels he was "underused" in X-Men 3.
"You always feel underused in these big films," he explained. "But I've got some fantastic little one-liners in it."
The actor has also complained about the make-up he had to wear for his role as Juggernaut.
"We had prosthetics and massive boots on," he told GMTV. "It took four hours every morning to put it all on, it was a complete nightmare. I used to go in the trailer and Sir Ian McKellen was there going 'Morning!' And that was it, I'd just sit back and let them get on with it."
Despite his feelings, the hardman has agreed to appear in the next two films in the series

About all the mutants that people seem to be talking about, I know mostly everyone on this board knows who they are, but IMO the "average" moviegoer will not have a clue, unless they are mentioned by name and state their powers, and IMO they will only be cameo roles. When I saw the first X-Men on TV (this was my pre-fandom as I only came to the franchise because I became a fan of Jackman) I had no clue who the other characters were other than the main ones, and I think a lot of moviegoers may be the same way. I know the people I will be going to see X-3 with won't know who anyone else is.
And what is this with Halle/Storm "hogging the screen" (or whatever words were used)? I'm thinking maybe Halle's request for a juicier role or more screen time are making some people think her character is pushing everyone else out of the way. I'm not sure that's true.

X3 Novelization from Comicscontinuum.com (http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0601/21/index.htm)
The novelization of X3, written by Chris Claremont and based on the screenplay by Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg, is scheduled for release on May 16 from Del Rey.
Here's how the 352-page book is described:
"The X-Men, mutant heroes sworn to defend a world that hates and fears them, are back! This time, with the help of new recruits The Beast and Angel, they must face evolution itself in the form of their former teammate, Jean Grey! Possessed with the cosmic power of the Dark Phoenix, the resurrected Jean Grey has become a danger to herself, her mutant comrades, and the entire planet! To stave off this imminent threat to humanity, a potential cure is discovered and processed to treat -- and ultimately eliminate -- genetic mutations, once and for all! Now, as the battle lines are drawn, the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier, must contend with both Jean Grey's world-consuming powers, as well as the malevolent Brotherhood, a band of powerful mutants organized under Xavier's former ally, Magneto!"
Claremont, who also wrote the X2 novelization, make a non-speaking cameo in X3.
In other X3 news:
* Fox UK has released a new image of the film, featuring Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Storm (Halle Berry) and Beast (Kelsey Grammer). Click on the image above for a larger image.

'X3'' (May 26): Those marvelous mutants return for what could be the final chapter in the ''X-Men'' saga. The whole crew is back, including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn and Famke Janssen, whose character seemingly died a watery death at the end of ''X2: X-Men United.''
With Singer moving on to ''Superman Returns,'' directing duties fell to Brett Ratner, maker of the ''Rush Hour'' flicks.
This time out, the superpowered mutants find themselves slowly being more accepted into a society that feared them as freaks, only to face new turmoil when a ''cure'' is discovered for their mutant condition.
''If you could actually get rid of your special power which alienates you from the rest of the world, would you do it?'' said Jackman, who reprises his role as Wolverine. ''It's a metaphor very much about intolerance, I think, fear of anything that's different. If you could choose to not be Jewish or not be gay or not be African-American. Life maybe is not as easy if you're a minority. Would you take the opportunity to change that if you could?''
Jackman said ''X3'' would conclude the ''X-Men'' trilogy, though a Wolverine solo movie is in the works.

X3 UPDATE
Sources told The Continuum there will "almost certainly" be guests affiliated with X3 at both WonderCon and Wizard World Los Angeles.
In other X3 notes:
* Not only is Nightcrawler not in the film, it's likely he won't even be mentioned.
* As seen in the trailer, a different actor is playing the president.
* Burger King will have international promotions, but there's no word yet on domestic tie-ins.
Wondercon, Saturday 11th February:
11:00-12:30 20th Century Fox/Fox Searchlight Presents— Fox Searchlight presents, from deep within the brilliant imagination of film master Wes Craven (the Scream trilogy, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red Eye), a reinterpretation of his 1977 cult classic The Hills Have Eyes, coming out March 6. With Craven in a producing role, the cutting-edge filmmakers behind Haute Tension, Alexandre Aja (as director/writer) and Gregory Levasseur (as writer), have refashioned Craven’s chilling story so that it may terrify yet another generation of filmgoers. Craven is joined by stars Aaron Stanford and Vinessa Shaw. Plus a special look at the acclaimed Russian horror film, Night Watch, debuting Feb. 17!
20th Century Fox presents an exclusive look at some of the studio’s biggest pictures for 2006. Fear the day—6/6/06 (666!)—when The Omen takes over theaters across the country. A remake of the 1976 classic, the new film takes the tale of the coming of the Antichrist, personified by a young boy named Damien, to an even more thrilling and visceral level. Director John Moore will screen specially prepared footage.

X3: THE FEAR PERSISTS
02.10.06
By Dave Davis (dave@chud.com)
Contributing sources: Dark Horizons, Coming Soon (http://www.darkhorizons.com/2006/x3.php)
For a while there, it seemed like X3 (which apparently now has the asinine subtitle The Last Stand which, like X2's marketing addendum X-Men United, I am refusing to acknowledge) would be nothing but an unmitigated disaster. But the early teaser trailer assuaged some of that worry -- it actually looked like it could be a feasible entry in the X-Men movie franchise, despite the Beast's blue hair-shirt, Juggernaut's bad muscle-suit and the involvement of Brett Ratner.
However, in retrospect it may have just been the brief thrill of seeing the characters in motion once again. And that's passed. Now the more I see (and hear through the grapevine), the more that apprehension rises like a dead redheaded mutant. The photographic evidence that has shown up at Dark Horizons (http://www.darkhorizons.com/2006/x3.php) and Coming Soon (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13142)paints a grim picture -- they seem to be utilizing the exact same angsty multi-poster advertising scheme as Rent, and those mutant chicks look more like a J-Pop band from The Fifth Element than worthy X-foes.
I wonder if Superman Returns is any good...

The summer blockbuster season gets off to an early and disappointing start with "X2: X-Men United
These are traditional movie-villain types -- McKellen smiles eerily, while Cox scowls, so we understand that they're morally equivalent.

OK, enough. Just. Enough.
Those opinions won't do anything good for the movie... but also they won't do anything bad because, you know what? THE GENERAL AUDIENCE DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO MOVIE CRITICS. That's the reason some crappy movies as Doom or Underworld: Evolution make a lot of money: NO ONE LISTEN TO CRITICS, PEOPLE GO TO SEE A MOVIE AND AFTER SEEING IT, THEY MAKE AN OPINION.
Geez, I don't know if this movie is going to rock or suck, but it's completely and absolutely ABSURD and STUPID to judge a freaking movie that is still in post-production!!!
Godd*mit...
Actually, Doom didn't do so well. It had a production budget of $60 million and made $54 million worldwide. Still, I agree with the point of your post.
All this negative buzz makes me sad. :(

I think it's time for me to take some days out of this board. The negativity some people is bringing here won't make me change my opinion of the movie (I'd change my opinion if, after SEEING the movie, I realize it's that bad critics say), but it's getting into my nerves.
See you soon, people. I hope some people would realize that you can't judge something until you have seen it. :(

What this May's got going for it are four big brand name titles sprinkled throughout the month. Paramount's franchise installment "Mission: Impossible 3," starring Tom Cruise and directed by J.J. Abrams, arrives May 5. Warner Bros.' action adventure "Poseidon" opens May 12, directed by Wolfgang Petersen ("The Perfect Storm") and inspired by Irwin Allen's classic 1972 production. Sony and Imagine Entertainment's "The Da Vinci Code" kicks off May 19, starring Tom Hanks, directed by Ron Howard and based on Dan Brown's best-selling novel. And Fox's franchise episode "X-Men: The Last Stand," directed by Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour" and "Rush Hour 2"), goes into theaters May 26 for Memorial Day weekend.
Because the first weekend in May, in effect, now launches the summer season it's a weekend that unfolds in the glare of the global media spotlight. That, of course, means that expectations are inflated and if they're not met the headlines are ugly. That's exactly what happened last year when "Kingdom" arrived to very unexciting grosses. Insiders had gotten used to hefty openings in early May going back to Sony's record-setting "Spider-Man" launch to $114.8 million the weekend of May 3-5, 2002. The following year Fox started the summer ball rolling with an $85.6 million opening May 2-4, 2003 for "X2: X-Men United."
Despite "Da Vinci's" high profile, it's important to note that it's not "Star Wars" and it's not arriving with the same compelling selling point "Sith" had -- that it was the last episode in that long running franchise. While "Da Vinci" isn't likely to match "Sith's" opening, it should nonetheless get off to a strong start for an adult appeal drama. It's worth remembering that adult films don't open with the same first weekend frenzy of ticket sales that youth appeal pictures command. Adults take longer to get around to seeing the films they want to see, but that gives those pictures more playability over the long term since they last longer and typically don't fall by staggering percentages week by week. In "Da Vinci's" case, it's got many weeks of great summer playing time ahead of it and that should enable it to amass a sizable cumulative gross over time.
That brings us to Memorial Day weekend, which, depending on your point of view, is either the end of the pre-summer period or the start of the summer season. Either way, it's likely to be a very strong weekend this year thanks to Fox's launch of the third episode in its "X-Men" franchise -- "X-Men: The Last Stand," directed by Brett Ratner and starring Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart and Famke Janssen. The previous "X-Men" installment arrived to $85.6 million the weekend of May 2-4, 2003 and this one should be much bigger given its holiday weekend playing time.
The only wide opening competition "X-Men" will have is from Revolution Studios and Sony's comedy "Little Man," directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and starring Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans.
Comparisons will be to Memorial Day weekend of '05, which saw "Sith" hold on to first place with a four day gross of $70 million ($19,123 per theater). Key films grossed $226 million for the four days, down 6% from $239.2 million in '04.
By that point, the die was cast for the summer of '05. With all four pre-summer weekends having been down from the prior year, the trend was clearly not very encouraging as the real summer season got underway. After that, it was Summer Slump all the way. About the only good thing we can say about that is that this summer's comparisons should definitely benefit from being calculated against so many soft weekends. If they're not, Hollywood's really going to be in trouble.

From a blog:
http://ryno-v-6point7.livejournal.com/222642.html
Watched the trailer for X3 again, trying to piece that story together, I'll be pleasantly surprised I'm sure just as I have been with the first 2. If you haven't seen the trailer go check it out there's a great shot of Frasier as beast and it looks damn good. Also a peek at Vinnie Jones in the Juggernaut suit Check out the trailer here (http://www.x3movie.com/) (Release date 05.26.06)
Honestly, the one I'm looking most forward to as far as comic book movies go this year Superman Returns Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2) directing. Honestly I'm really psyched to see Spacey play Lex Luthor and hopefully Kate Bosworth won't be a terrible Lois Lane. I'm also curious to see if they intertwine any of the smallville mythos. Considering they do have 4 different versions of the mythos to choose from. Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, Original Film, and Smallville. I just hope they don't screw it up, I'll have a little faith in Brian Singer until he gives me reason not to. (Release Date 06.30.06)
it's pretty far off, so there's not much info on it but I'll go see this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458525/) on principle alone. I like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and now I can't imagine anyone else playing that role.
Atleast Entertainment Weekly (http://popwatch.ew.com/) likes the bus shelter posters.
If you'll forgive me this morning for being unabashedly fan-boyish, the X-Men: The Last Stand posters on display at Movie City News are so cool I think my head might explode a little. I'm especially loving the one of Ben Foster as Angel (center), although Famke Janssen's Jean Grey/Phoenix runs a close second. Check out all six and quit tryin' to be bashful, PopWatchers: Which one is your favorite?

The upcoming X-Men movie, X-Men: The Last Stand, will be the final film in the comic book-based franchise, says 20th Century Fox.
Director Brett Ratner confirmed the statement, adding that there will be no more films except for possible spin-offs based on the characters of Wolverine and Magneto.
"Well, it seems to be the last of the series," says Ratner of the title for X3. "We wanted to make sure the audiences knew that this was a trilogy. Even though they weren't made together like Lord of the Rings, this is really closure for the X-Men series... This is the last stand for sure."
Development for the Wolverine and Magneto spin-offs are already under way, according to Marvel Studios head Avi Arad.
The Last Stand is due in theatres May 26.

X-Men: The Last Stand
Life, death and rebirth. The third X-flick is the most emotional yet...
20th Century Fox has been guarding its secrets for the third instalment of their X-franchise like it’s sitting on the launch codes for America’s nuclear arsenal – if the information falls into the wrong hands, the world is doomed! But Total Film was invited, despite the studio’s iron curtain, for exclusive access to the movie’s amazing secrets. Worst kept of them is Famke Janssen’s return in X-Men: The Last Stand, as Fox has officially christened number three, despite the fact that psionically-charged X-woman Jean Grey met her maker in X2. Forget the excitable web reports. Total Film came face to face with Janssen on the X-Men 3 set in Vancouver and sat down with her to hear the facts. As per one of the Marvel comic’s most epic storylines, Janssen’s Jean Grey is reborn in X3 as the terrifyingly powerful Dark Phoenix...
“Um, you can’t say anything about that,” exclaims Janssen. “I can’t say anything about my character. I can talk about the weather, though... Vancouver is partly cloudy, with a 30 percent chance of rain.”
Janssen’s not the only one. Total Film encounters most of the name players in Vancouver, from director Brett Ratner to Sir Ian McKellen, but they’re all under the same strict no-reveal policy. “It’s not worth it,” sighs Halle Berry, back as weather-bending vixen Storm. “We all had to sign papers that we’d be sued for everything we have if we talk about it.”
Here’s what we are allowed to talk about. Bryan Singer, director of X-Men and X2, bolted to do Superman Returns and was replaced by Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughn. Nine weeks before the start of filming, he too hit the eject button – for “personal reasons”. Vaughn left his mark though, instrumental in signing up two new mutants: Kelsey Grammer as furry, blue scientific genius Beast and Vinnie Jones as the indestructible battering-ram Juggernaut. With Vaughn gone, Ratner, the director of Red Dragon and the Rush Hour films, was handed the reins and segued into delivering what he insists will be the biggest and most emotional X-Men film yet. But have no fear, insists X3 screenwriter Simon Kinberg. The franchise is in safe hands. “Brett’s got an immense respect for the X-Men universe,” he tells Total Film. “He’s staying loyal to the tone of the first two films, but he’s making this movie more visceral and emotional. We’re dealing with one of the most intense storylines in the X-Men’s history, and Brett knows how important emotion is. Wait till you see Famke Janssen – she’s going to blow your mind.”
Indeed, the few nuggets of info that have slipped through Fox’s smokescreen expose the Dark Phoenix storyline, which features the resurrection of Jean Grey as a telepathic super-dominatrix whose lack of control over her new powers puts her X-comrades – as well as the entire planet – in peril. A potential cure for mutancy is also discovered... which could spark an all-out war between the X-Men, led by Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and Magneto (Ian McKellen), who gets to lead his Brotherhood of bad-guy mutants.
Joining good-guy Beast are winged mutant Angel (Ben Foster) and Multiple Man (Eric Dane) – who can replicate himself – while joining the forces of evil are new X-babes Psylocke (Mei Melancon) and Callisto (Dania Ramirez). But despite the new faces, don’t expect Wolverine and Storm to be sitting on the sidelines admiring each other’s hair. Berry had to be coaxed back to the fold with the promise that, finally, Storm could kick some ass and make use of her cape to fly. And her relationship deepens with Jackman’s hotheaded clawman, the latter also insisting that Wolvie gets more down and dirty with his fights in X3. “We tried to incorporate more of the comics into Wolverine’s fighting style,” says Jackman. “I didn’t want it to be pretty.”
Other things to look forward to? Expect a battle between the X-Men and an army of zombies, the spectacular demolition of the Golden Gate Bridge and at least one X-Man funeral (no prizes for guessing who – they virtually give it away in the trailer)... “There are some heartbreaking moments,” says Kinberg. “It deals with what happens when someone you love starts to spiral out of control. How can you help them?”
Total Film and the X3 team have the full on-set X-posé ready and waiting. Stay close in the coming months...
