Just caught this again, and i was hooked and overwhelmed by the films story and actors.. namely of course Al Pacino and Robert Deniro.. It really has one of the best ensemble casts and the best Character development in any film i have ever seen
that rememorable scene in the diner, the freakin shootout (Best shootouts i have ever seen and one of the longest) and the end while Pacino is holding Deniro's hand and Moby's God Moving over the face of waters plays had me teary eyed.. so powerful and now it creeps into my top 10 which is very hard to do
one of the most underrated films of all time as well for i NEVER HEAR anyone talking about this movie ... Micheal MANN is the FREAKIN MAN!

Whoever said Heat was underrated? It was popular when I saw it in the theater since it paired up pacino and Deniro for the first time and features one of the best shootouts ever.Where you been?

Jim Gaffigan did a bit once that this thread reminds me of.
Where he saw heat, in like, 2000, and wanted to talk to his friends about it. So he'd go up to them and be like "so, I just saw HEAT" and they'd be like "Congratulations dude, I saw that in like...1996. ass" and just walk off. Cause he took wayyyy too long to see that movie. And thus, it's not a matter of rating, it's a matter of old news.

Heat is brilliant. One of my favourite recent films with a vague film noir feel to it, Mann is good with that kind of thing.

Heat is far from under-rated. It has two acting legends in the same film for the first time (if i'm not mistaken) and its quite renowned.

The most underrated film ever is PREDATOR 2.
Heat was very well received, got great reviews and did well financially I...think....despite the fact that it's 7 hours long.
Heat was the male equivalent of a chick-flick btw. A total whack-off.
That scene where DeNiro and Pacino are having coffee? SO embarrassing....they're just smirking the whole time "Yeah, drink it IN, movie-going public, that's right, you know you LOVE it! Bob and Al, tradin' riffs, HAha! Whoo"
And my friends and I got a life-long catch phrase from the movie.
"These guys are GOOD *grudging respect*.
Lol, whatever.

I'm on your side.
I was talking to Rock Strongo.
You obviously meant, "working together" in a move as in, "in the same scenes".
Marlon Brando and Kevin Spacey will both appear in SR. Who cares.
Now if they were IN it together, that would be something.

A good movie, but not underrated because I remember the critics were mostly positive about it. Maybe people feels it to be underrated because it didn't made a zillion dollars at the box office, but it isn't that kind of movie

First of all, Michael Mann IMO does not get the repect he deserves at times.
Second of all, hate to burst your bubbles but this famous Pacion/Deniro scene never actually happened both actors filmed the scene at different times and then were put together during editing.

The bubble hasn't been burst. They filmed certain parts together which can be seen in the widescreen version, however some of the scene was not filmed together.

The scene in the diner with them talking. At points its them on there own (visually on screen), then the camera pulls back and you can see they are both sitting at the table.

logan_weapon_x
01-02-2006, 12:54 PM
171 mins.
And I found this at ImDb:
Many viewers claim that Deniro and Pacino never (or hardly ever) actually share screen time during the film, despite the hype surrounding the films release as showcasing their first screen appearance. In most Pan and Scan versions of the film, and TV broadcasts, it does appear that during the "diner scene" the two never actually share the screen, but viewing the film in correct letterbox format, as the director intended, clearly shows the two actors sitting at the table, though only in wide shots.
Darthphere
01-02-2006, 01:12 PM
Hmmm that pretty much argues both our points. Still why only wide-shots?

There is commentary by Mann about the scene, he purprosely did that.. and the thing is they both were there at the scene and the restuarant which it was filmed at says they saw it for their own eyes, for they were the only extras at the part working from the place

Wrong. Dead wrong. I have the region 2 Two Disc Special Edition and there's a whole feature devoted solely to the diner scene titled "Pacino and De Niro: The Conversation". And yes, both of them were in that scene together. The whole scene was actually shot from a variety of angles and the performances by both the actors was very much reactive and spontaneous because Mann didn't allow any rehearsals.
Here's what Mann says about the scene: "I wanted to shoot two over simultaneously. So when Al is talking to Bob, there's one camera here and by a hair's breath out of the frame there's a camera on the other side so that consequently, I could get the unity of performance, so that take 11 for Al was take 11 for Bob"
Dante Spinotti, the editor: "We also shot the high angle, we also shot the two profile shots that were not used in the movie. We had different kind of setups. We had definitely singles, tight overs, wider overs on both sides. Most of them shot at the same time."
Mann continues, "They were so tuned to each other and so totally in character that the subtlest shift of posture by Bob or the subtlest cocking of his head or certain thing that might happen with the side of his face, Pacino was reacting to and countering. Each take had a separate, unifying, organic something to it. Each was different from the other. The people who probably appreciated that scene more than anybody else are the editors and myself because we got to see..."here they are in take 10, in take 11, here they are in take 12. Most of the whole scene is from take 11."
Aside from all that, there are also certain moments during the diner scene when the camera is focused on De Niro, you can clearly make out Pacino slightly shifting his head towards the right.

Lol close this. Just because it's the first time YOU saw it, doesn't mean that your lapse in judgement to watch it a lonnnnnnng time ago means the film is underrated. That was your choice to ignore it until now. Most of us have enjoyed this movie for years and have it in our collection. :)

Heat is fantastic. I fell asleep when I first saw it, but watched it again and really got to experience how great it truly is. Great action sequences, fantastic acting all around, brilliant story, and just really damn good movie. I do have one question, though:
Is it ever actually revelaed if Portman's character dies? I never caught whether or not she did. Maybe I missed it.
