View Full Version : Becoming an Extra

Hey all -- I'm new to this forum. I stumbled across this board in my quest to become an extra in the third Spider-man movie. Searching through archives, I did find one thread about this topic, but it didn't give any sort of conclusive answer (people suggested e-mailing SONY -- I couldn't even find the appropriate email address on their website). I'm a student at Columbia University and even if not an extra, I'd love to watch the filming occur. The only info I've managed to learn is that filming will take place any time from May to Sept (I do live near the city though, so I can show up during the summer).
So...does anyone out there have ANY idea at all about how one may go about becoming an extra? Is an agent necessary (if so, I'm definitely out of this game)? Has anyone here been an extra or know someone who was?
Thanks.
P.S. Please don't chew my head off if there has been a more extensive thread about this which I missed. Cut me some slack.

There are several sites that post open calls for extras (including SHH!), so I would just keep checking online for when filming is going to take place at Columbia.
You might want to ask Dew K. Mosi (AKA Heather) about the process she went through to become an extra in SM1, but she lives in Studio City California so she's probably got a few "ins" that the average person doesn't have.
Here's Dew's big scene, BTW:

I don't know how true this is, but my friend said that his girlfriend got an e-mail from Sony asking her to be an extra. She goes to drama classes and stuff like that so he might be telling the truth

all you need to do to become an extra is sneek onto the set, and when they are filming you just walk right in front of the camera and wave.

I was lucky enough to be an extra in spiderman 1, it was pretty cool I guess. I got to see Bone Saw and Spidey going at it in the ring. Raimi had to keep telling Macho Man to tone it down, that was pretty funny. It was the first time did something like that, I wouldn't mind doing it again. If you go, try to sneek in some food to eat, they gave us like a sack lunch type deal and it sucked big time.

I'd like to be an extra in a big outdoor scene like the balcony scene in the first spidey movie. It would be hard to notice, but far off in the background would be some guy scratching his balls.

i think everyone thats going to be in the NYC area should organize something and we should discuss how we can all become extras, or just lucky fans watching from afar. i have 3 awesome cameras (nikon SLR, sony digital, & panasonic digicamcorder) so it'd be real awesome if we could take some photos!

Can Clevelanders pass for New Yorkers? "Spider-Man 3" is looking for extras who have that Upper West Side look.
The movie, which is filming some action scenes here this month, is holding its only open casting call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the English Oak Room at Tower City Center, said casting director Lillian Pyles.
Thousands are expected to show up, said Pyles, who did casting for "Antwone Fisher" and "Against the Ropes" when they filmed here.
"Spider-Man 3" needs 200 extras for each day of shooting from Friday, April 21, to Saturday, April 29.
Participants must be 18 and over and should bring a photograph (no digital images).
Bring a pen for filling out an application, but leave children at home.
Only people who attend the casting call will be considered for roles as extras, Pyles said.
If cast, extras will be part of a New York street scene and get $75 for a 12-hour day.
They can work for just one day or work every day, she said.
Call 216-321-8439 for more information.
"Spider-Man 3" stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.
The comic book-inspired movie is due in theaters next year.

I've been thinking, Cleveland won out over New York for exterior shooting. Isn't it possible that they may still do some "interior" shooting in the Big Apple? I hope so, since I am looking for people to sign my petition to bring back the Spider-Man balloon for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, located on: http://www.petitiononline.com/mrvl2099/petition.html. Sounds like a stretch, but I'm willing to try anything to get the support I need at this point. You guys are welcome to sign it if you like.
Also, did I mention that I managed to meet and talk to Sam Raimi when they were filming "Spider-Man 2"?

Perhaps they don't want to film in New York, because there's too many people that will be taking pictures of key scenes and posting them on the web. This way Sony will have a lot less pics of SM3 floating around. Or maybe they just haven't shot in New York yet.

I'm actually going to get to be an extra in the 2nd unit filming in Cleveland. They're using me and my car. I'm super jacked for it!

I'll second that. I've been invited to bring my car up for filming as well. I'm bummed out that none of the major stars will be there though.

I too was cast with my car. Has anyone else that was cast gotten a call yet this week? I was told I'd be called this week with an on set time and details but haven't been called yet. I'm getting worried....:(

04-19-2006, 01:55 PM
I'm assuming you guys were there today (and I very possibly met you) as they did the dry-run and testing of the drivers. If not, they'll be calling people the day before shooting (at least for the drivers).
wcpuff
04-19-2006, 02:16 PM
No, I wasn't notified to be there today. Now I'm really worried. The casting guy told me I'd be needed on set every day of shooting, but If they didn't have me there today, then I wonder what they want me for then. Do you know for sure they'll be calling those of us who were'nt there today tomorrow? Thanks. :)
padraig
04-19-2006, 02:48 PM
I haven't heard anything outside of what they've told me. Keep your ear out though as they told those of us they had there today that it's a day-by-day thing and they'll be calling people basically the day before.

04-20-2006, 07:04 AM
Yeah, but I'm not too excited about that Padraig. You were pulled into the "special" group of 21 and I wasn't. I'm going to be EXTREMELY ticked off if they tell me too be 'on-call' all week long and then never call me. By the way, I was the one driving the piece-o-***** light blue Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra in the first group. What were you driving???
padraig
04-20-2006, 11:16 AM
Hmmmm, I can't remember if I remember that one or not. Was that the one with the rough exhaust? I do remember seeing that one.
I was in a tan Alero in the first part of the second group to go.
Of course anything I say about the "core group" is from other people in the group telling me. I ran to my car to get my payment voucher and missed part of what she told us. I asked someone else while we were waiting in line to be signed out and they told me.

About How many drivers were there? I still haven't gotten a call yet...
padraig
04-20-2006, 03:07 PM
I believe they said there were 50 all together, and the "core group" that was pulled seperate at the end was 21. I haven't received a call about anything for tomorrow yet, so I don't know what's up with the actual filming when they start.
wcpuff
04-20-2006, 05:35 PM
I finally got my call today and they are not filming tomorrow. We're going to start Saturday, and possibly not until Sunday if it rains. I'm cast as a business woman. Thanks for all the info.
burke122101
04-20-2006, 06:06 PM
That's awesome Puff. As for my car, Padraig, it was the one with all the surface rust. I was third from the front on the very first group. I haven't heard anything yet, but I'm to the point were I doubt that I'll ever get used as an extra.
LeighAngela
04-21-2006, 09:15 AM
Hey you guys who got calls that I'm so jealous of! :O
I'm just wondering if any of you submitted actual resumes with your info sheet. I was hoping that would help me, but I guess it didn't.
If so, what kinds of things do you guys do here in Cleveland? I'm more of a singer/performer than an actor, but I was an extra in The Oh In Ohio and I thought that would help too since Lilian was casting director in that movie too. Darn.
LeighAngela
04-21-2006, 09:17 AM
Oh and PS Burke, did you put on the sheet or tell them ahead of time that your car had surface rust? If not, that may be why they haven't called. I mean how often do you see rusty cars in a New York street scene? The rust could distract the eye.
LeighAngela
04-21-2006, 09:20 AM
Oh and Puff, at first you said you were cast with your car, but now you say you're a business woman. Does that mean they switched you to a pedestrian, or that you're a business woman in your car?
burke122101
04-21-2006, 09:52 AM
Yes, I told them about the rust on my car. They are trying to make it look realistic you know. If you don't think there is beater cars driving around in NYC, you have never been down Broadway! Remember, there are a lot of college kids there, too. As for the resume, no I didn't bring anything with me other than a nice head shot (I'm a manager for a Sears Portrait Studio so that part wasn't hard) and I filled out the application. Other than that, nothing else.
LeighAngela
04-21-2006, 10:11 AM
No, don't take offense, I know there are rusty cars in NY and yes I've been down Broadway. But the scene is supposed to be upper West side, and it's just when you see those street scenes in NY you don't often see rusty cars....of course that could be that you don't notice it because they are in the background.
Well, maybe they'll call me for another day.....fingers crossed!
padraig
04-21-2006, 11:12 AM
No, I didn't bring anything special. I just had a picture I had printed off my computer. It was a decent picture, but the quality wasn't great as it had been blown up during printing on my home printer.
As for filming, there is something today as luckily they called to "confirm" that I would be there (which is the first I've heard of it so it's a good thing they called!) today. Good thing I live so close to downtown!
LeighAngela
04-21-2006, 12:02 PM
Wow, calling ppl the day of.
Well I'm glad they are getting to film today even tho they didn't call me and I'm stuck in the office :-( The weather says rain ALL next week, and I would hate for them to regret coming to Cleveland.
padraig
04-21-2006, 12:28 PM
Well, they did tell those of us in the drivers group that we would have to be available every day, so I guess it's a good thing I don't have a job right now. :)
I'm on my way out the door now, but won't be taking any pictures today no matter what as my digital camera is being a little screwy and I don't have time to mess with it.
