View Full Version : Tim Burton & Johnny Depp Team For 'Sweeney Todd'
Alms alms... for a pitiful wooooooman. :(

So 'Kiss Me' is cut, but 'Wait' is in? A song like wait does absolutely nothing for the plot.
Actually, "Wait" does do something for the plot. It helps to establish the arc of Lovett's and Todd's relationship.
Kiss Me is an annoying song anyway
I've always thought it was one of the lovelier moments of the score.
Anthony and Johanna are annoying characters, but still important. :o
That depends entirely on how they're played. With a good actor and actress in the lead, I find them highly enjoyable.
They're execrable on the Lansbury/Hearn DVD, though. :::shudders:::
Yeah, I've only ever seen the DVD.. they're so annoying. :(

The porkchop sideburns, the sunken eyes, and the Burtonesque hair looks so great on Depp! I believe Tim Burton has made another brilliant film, I'm going to have to use the phrase again.
Phenomenally nightmarishly superbly enthralling.

Anthony and Johanna are annoying characters, but still important. :o
Johanna is alright, Anthony annoys me to the point of violence. Then again, I only saw the recent concert version (for those who haven't seen it, it's all on YouTube), so other versions might be better.

Johanna, Pretty Women, Johanna and Not While I'm Around are ballad-like.
None of the Ballads, then? Oh well.
Yeah, they've been turned into instrumental. Kinda sucks because I alsways like to hear "Swing your razor.." right after "My Friends".

Slashfilm (http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/11/15/new-sweeney-todd-photos-and-forgive-tv-ad/) has a new image from Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, which you can see below, plus a new TV spot, titled 'Forgive', which you can see here (http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/11/15/new-sweeney-todd-photos-and-forgive-tv-ad/). The video's playing a little jerky when we try to watch it, but there's some new footage in there.
The new image gives us the first full shot of Anthony Hope (Jamie Campbell Bower), the young sailor who returns to London with Sweeney Todd after the latter has been in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Anthony then falls in love with Todd's daughter Johanna, without knowing who her father is, while Todd dances off to merrily slash some throats while singing ditties. We don't want to ruin the movie for you, but all does not go entirely smoothly for any of the characters.

Hey, a little off-subject, but remember the story of Kevin Smith's "rivalry" with Tim Burton on the Evening with Kevin Smith dvd? About how, when Burton's PotA remake came arround, he joked around about Tim stealling the idea for the "Ape-headed Lincoln memorial" bit from his Chasing Dogma comic?
You think someone durring one of his college campus forums will ask how it feels to inspire Burton to Sweeney Todd?

The majority of the soundtrack is up on that site. On the "Enter the Site" page, you can hear the whole of the "Ballad" instrumental that they're using as an Overture. Once you're in the site, you can hear large chunks of most of the songs, including all of "A Little Priest" (but they're clearly the soundtrack versions of the cues, since they omit any of the dialogue moments).
I genuinely like the whole cast, singing and otherwise. That's not to say that everybody has a good or great singing voice. Often, it's the opposite. But they still work for the character and make their songs compelling, regardless of vocal talents.
I'm especially fond of HBC's Mrs. Lovett. Not a good voice, per se, but she has a fascinating sound and successfully reinterprets the character. No wonder she was Sondheim's favorite.

I'm really digging this now. Depp kinda has some Sparrow-like movements in it, but, since he's playing a character in the same period and been practically doing so for two or three years, I can let it slide. Plus that clip of Empithony is just righteous.
Helena hasn't done that well in the clip for "A Little Priest," but the other stuff I've heard is enough to withhold judgement, for now.

Thank you. I was originally skeptical about Depp's singing voice but he was quite decent with Priest but I believe there are some lyrics missing in this one.

This was listed on rottentomatoes as a good review.... it seems bad to me..
Director Tim Burton’s screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 Grand Guignol musical is at once mesmerizing and disappointing. Outstanding singing performances from its gifted ensemble cast contrast unfavorably with Burton’s trademark affinity for a drab monochromatic color scheme of white, blue, brown and gray. Gallons of orange/red blood pour out beneath thankfully abbreviated songs performed in all-too-predictable orchestrations meant to cater to Broadway audiences familiar with the original Sondheim production. For such an idyllic gothic setting, Burton misses his cue to update the songs with orchestration, reharmonization, tempo, and key changes that could have corrected the music’s tendency to slip into a drone of same-sounding pitches.

What I find interesting about SWEENEY TODD's opening credits is that it seems *very* self-referential. It's like Burton is purposefully recalling some of his previous films (namely, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, BATMAN RETURNS, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) and is mixing it all up with blood.

Helena Bonham Carter, Burton have second baby
1 hour, 4 minutes ago
British actress Helena Bonham Carter has given birth to a daughter, her second child with director Tim Burton, People magazine reported on Sunday.
The baby was born in London on Saturday, People said, quoting the actress' publicist. The couple already have a 4-year-old son, Billy.
Bonham Carter, 41, received a Golden Globe nomination last week for her role as a ghoulish baker in Burton's musical adaptation "Sweeney Todd," which opens in limited release on Friday. Burton, 49, was also nominated.
She revealed in the latest issue of Playboy that she became pregnant midway during the production, causing continuity problems since the film was not shot in sequence.
"I start off with huge breasts, and then I walk upstairs and suddenly I've got tangerines again," she said. "It's melons to tangerines."

Well, I just got back from a special screening of the film, sponsored by a local radio station in Florida. It was a big theatre, full stadium seating, and it was a good 95% full. No trailers, so it was right to the good stuff.
Ironically, I had no real intention of seeing the film before I got the passes for tonight's screening. I dig Tim Burton and Depp, but I just wasn't quite hyped to see this film. So it must have been fate for me to have my butt in that seat tonight, because this movie was flat out amazing. Burton may have outdone himself with this one, combining his usual moody, gothic flair with another tremendous Depp performance for a wicked good time at the movies.
The cinematography, lighting, costume design. All top notch. And, of course, the blood. Oh yes, there are BUCKETS of it. And the throat cutting never gets old. :D  Big kudos to Helena Bonham Carter who really makes this film. Definitely a Best Supporting Actress nod in her future, as her character is so oddly lovable and an excellent compliment to Depp.
And then there's the music. I didn't realize how much of a musical this film was going to be, so it took me a while to really get a feel for it. There's a lot of music, and yet you're intoxicated by it all. The score is outstanding, and all of the songs flow so well through the story, even to the point of connecting plot points and arcs all by themselves.
Simply put, Sweeney Todd is a macabre masterpiece. Brutal, touching, funny, and deliriously magical. One of the best films I've seen all year. Easily.
Grade: A
That's excellent to hear. Buckets of blood sounds delightful and Helena Bonham Carter makes any movie awesome.
Perfect Christmas movie.

I never saw the play, but it really is a great musical. I love just how much music there is and how interlaced it is with the story. Especially when just a few lines here and there in the normal dialogue is sung. It really works as a musical story and not just a story with random songs in it.

Is it suitable for a sensitive female to see? :(
It's bloody, but the blood is so red that it's stylized. I don't know, it really depends on what your limit is. What gory thing have you watched that you couldn't take?
Most of the kills are quick and just a lot of blood spurting. But when he kills the judge it gets pretty brutal.
It's not like intestines and what not, it's purely just blood throughout the whole movie. Though there may be some shadowy shots of body parts. :cwink:

I'd say there's 3 lingering deaths in the movie, the one's with meaning. The others are all quick and light hearted. The whole feeling of the movie is completely different than saw. This feels like art, saw feels like a snuff film.
Worst comes to worst, just look away for a second. But, this movie isn't meant to be scary, like Saw, so the atmosphere is no where near as unforgiving.

Great film!this is due to the superb cast they had.I especially loved sacha baron cohen's character as he was much needed humor in an insanely dark and stylized film.Overall I trully recommedn it but be warned that this is a full on musical the commercials just hint on the music so you may be shocked that the first line of true dialouge is like 20 minutes in the film as 90% of the film is singing.Plus you may be shocked at the Kill Bill like blood and gore.I was surprised by it the first time Sweeney slit a thorat but the rest of the time it is played out as very dark humor.

good movie overall....
i loved the style and look of it, and the humor was great.
however the music wasnt memorable at all to me, and alot of it was repeated especially that stupid "i feel you, joanna" song, that became a joke after the first time, not sure if that was intended or not, but it was annoying as hell.
the cast couldnt sing to save their lives... except for the johanna girl.
8 out of 10... but my rating might change after a while, because i certainly think its a good movie but i wouldnt wanna watch it again, like sleepy hollow and most of tim burtons newer movies.

I agree SOME of Burtons NEW movies aren't that great but, I can watch Sleepy Hollow any day of the week. Now Planet of the Apes is a different matter. The fact that these actors aren't classically trained in musical theater, I'd say they sang very well. In fact this musical has some of the trickiest dialogue and musical cues on Broadway.

I loved Depp's voice. His acting through singing was really top notch.
Did anyone else think that Johnny was totally channeling Edward Scissor Hands during the wedding fantasy? It was the stance and awkwardness. It was the only time he reminded me of Eddie.
That sequence is hilarious by the way. Todd in his bathing suit is priceless.

Well no surprise, I wasn't happy with Toby at all, or Pirelli. Everyone else though I loved. Was a bit upset they took away the whore aspect of beggar woman, felt it took away from the character. I usually hate the character of Johanna but she didn't bother me here. My complaint with Sweeney's character is that he was so into getting revenge on Judge Turpin, it felt like he forgot he had a daughter. Loved Mrs. Lovett. Antony won my heart.:O I was happy they cut most of Bailey's and Johanna's singing.
I am a bit curious as to hear/see how Burton would have incorporated a ghost chorus.

The best thing about SWEENEY TODD is the way that Tim Burton and his writers managed to elevate the material from the musical. So much rich detail was added that really fleshed things out that, in the musical, you don't even have time to imagine during some of the songs. The entire cast was excellent, even though most of them were clearly not highly trained singers (they had some coaching, that much was obvious). Depp was masterful, and this is one of Burton's better films. An absolutely spectacular achievement.
Saw it last night and I give it 5 out of 5. Great flick.

Just to clarify to those who never saw the play or have heard the original cast recording, the film was almost word for word identical to the play. Several songs were cut, as they didn't fit the tone of the film, as well as a few lyrical omissions, don so as to keep the transition from stage to film smooth. Some of the lyrics and songs were written only to ever work on stage, and would not have translated well on screen. But other than the cuts made, the film was practically word for word a direct adaptation. That, and they added a few things to keep things moving smoothly. This is easily the best adaptation of a stage musical ever put on film, and it was helped by the fact that it was an adaptation of the greatest musical ever put on stage by the greatest living composer in musical theatre. :woot: Hope I helped. If anyone wants to know the specific cuts/changes, just PM me.

I wouldn't neccessarily say it is my favorite film musical to date, but certainly in the top 10 and the best musical in the last 5 years (which there are quite a few of, recently, musical renissance?).
I thought Depp was superb. I mean his voice is untrained, but unlike say Gerard Butler as the Phantom, this was a bonus. He was completely immersive and mezmorizing. Quite honestly, he nailed the character by giving him a rock and roll sound. Bonham Carter was very good as well, albeit her voice was lacking compared to say, Angela Lansbury on the original cast or the woman in the revival I saw in 2005, but she acted the part well enough and was ghostily beautiful and memorable as the macbre and ambiguious Mrs. Lovitz. The rest of the cast was superb, with Rickman, Cohen and the actor playing Toby nailing it. Johanna was actually likeable for a change, but Anthony was as annoying as ever, but at least he was well acted and still has the best song in the musical.
The musical itself is a masterpiece. The complexity of the story, the music being able to tell the story and its manipulation of the audience is all a tribute to Sondheim. While I still think the elimination of The Ballad of Sweeney Todd (just once, would be nice?) and the judge singing creepily Johanna, it was still a masterful adaptation and certainly the best film adaptation of a stage musical in probably the last 30 years (Chicago would be an arguable comparison). The movie flows perfectly and is engrossing and the end just leaves the audience to wallow in their own misery.
Definetly one of Burton's best and a triumph for everyone involved. 9/10.
P.S. I love people calling it Little Shop of Horrors redone, when the musical predates that film and show and the story is MUCH older.

Question has anyone who has seen the flick seen the musical?
I am pretty much turned off to anything Burton touches, and I think he is brutal when he isn't working with his own material, like when he does adaptations (Batman/Planet of the Apes) but I do think he gets a lot better when he does his own stuff. I am just a little worried the flick will taint my musical experience
It's pretty much the same. Word for word in some cases.
DACrowe
12-24-2007, 01:22 AM
I wouldn't say, "It's pretty much the same." But I say it is very faithful to the spirit of the musical and the story and has many of the songs and everything (except fantasies, flashbacks and images visualized that cannot be on stage) you see is in the musical.
But there are some major changes, but I think while not nearly as faithful in adapting all the songs as say Phantom of the Opera or Dreamgirls or The Producers, it is infinitely more satisfying and one of Burton's strongest. Probably his strongest his film since Ed Wood, I'd say.
A list of changes:
SPOILERS
-The Ballad of Sweeney Todd and all the ghostily choruses are removed from the story and the only time you hear the music is in the opening credits as background music.
-The judge does not sing Johanna in a creepifying manner.
-The morning song between the judge and Bailey is cut in half.
-BIG SPOILER: The beggar woman/the barber's wife, Lucy, is not a prostitute and her song is cut in half and she does not try to solicit sex with the sailor.
-Johanna and Anthony do not have the love song "Kiss Me," or it's reprise. In fact, outside of the wonderful song, "Johanna," the love story is almost completely off screen in the movie.
-Sweeney doesn't get his chair ordered to him and is impatient because of Mrs. Lovett but makes it himself in this.
-A third of "Little Priest" is missing, including most of the best jokes like "The royal marine? What about his private parts? That's extra."
-"God, That's Good" is cut in half, without the actual title of the song being said.
-The crazies that Anthony frees from the nut house do not come and sing "The City is on Fire" in this version.
-Many other of the songs seem shorter than they did on stage so I assume there were cuts I was missing.
Interperative Changes:
SPOILERS
-Sweeney is far more insane in this version. When he gets to London he is already at the killing point, he just needs a little push. Depp's Sweeney is less sympathetic and much more tunnele visioned in performance and tone than the stage versions I know of, just focusing on revenge with the rest of the world dead to him, as opposed to the angry but bemused righteous man who goes nuts halfway through and even then has a sense of humor.
-Mrs. Lovett interestingly is not the batty fishmonger's wife with the cokney accent in this one that is hiding a much darker and evil scheming side with her eccentric exterior being superlative to the real monster underneath. Here,, she is much more sympathetic and far more in love with Sweeney and does everything to be closer to him and has a motherly streak that feels genuine as opposed to artificial. Her death is very grusome but sad, as opposed to much more satisfying like on stage. Maybe it is because Carter is still gorgeous underneath all that make up, though. ;)
-Tobias is not a teenager but a young boy. I think this worked marvelously well making him seem completely innocent and loveable.
-Far less humor.
-The ending ends after Sweeney dies, leaving the audience to wallow in the misery and horror of the climax in the finale. The chorus does not come out and sing the Ballad of Sweeney Todd and we do not see the lovers again, whose escape seems ill-fated in the movie.
-A LOT BLOODIER. A lot more bodies during the reprise of Johanne. The blood is on the walls in this one.
-Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett obviously do not have operetta voices in this.
-The order of some songs has been changed, AND SURPRISINGLY IT WORKS.
But I find all these changes work and while I would have kept more of the music, particularly in "The Little Priest" I overall think it was adapted brilliantly and works perfectly as a movie, which is what you want.
Yes, true.
What I meant was all the plot points are their, nothing was changed like say Dreamgirls, Chicago or Hairspray.

-A third of "Little Priest" is missing, including most of the best jokes like "The royal marine? What about his private parts? That's extra."
Ew. Your rendering of it leaves out the innuendo. The joke actually goes:
"Now, since marine doesn't appeal to you, how about Rear Admiral?"
"Too salty. I prefer General."
"With or without his Privates? ...with is extra."
-Sweeney is far more insane in this version. When he gets to London he is already at the killing point, he just needs a little push.
I always thought George Hearn played the character that way.
But I find all these changes work and while I would have kept more of the music, particularly in "The Little Priest" I overall think it was adapted brilliantly and works perfectly as a movie, which is what you want.
Yeah, it flows really well.
I would have kept a little bit more of the dialogue in "A Little Priest" (namely, the "General" exchange), but that's about it... it's a long song, and it still ran for a decent amount of time.

I missed the Ballad of Sweeney Todd a bit, too. I could have seen it working, even just as voices during the credits sequence that the film had. And Turpin could have been a little creepier/more obsessive toward Joanna.

He may be willing to kill Turpin, but I don't think he's already insane as much as he is cynical, bitter about the world, and lost. He just doesn't have much left to look forward to other than finding out what happened to his wife, who he seems pretty sure has moved on. He's lost in the past, and he goes back to what he knew. And when he finds out the apparent fate of his wife, that drives him the rest of the way mad. He also becomes more insane as the film progresses, going from bein willing to kill just Turpin to not caring about killing anyone.
In other news, I just found out a local theatre in my hometown will be doing SWEENEY TODD locally in the Spring/Summer of 2008. Wish me luck.

I disagree. There is a sense of humor to both stage Sweeneys I've seen and the original cast recording. He is bitter and out for revenge but he is fairly righteous for the first third of the play and his attack on Pirelli seems the beginning of the insanity and he just snaps at Epiphany. In the movie he is just dead. There is no humor in him and the only thing lurking behind Sweeney's eyes is a boiling rage. You feel his snapping at Pierelli was inevitable because he was already full of such disgust and contempt for EVERYONE, he never gave the image of righteousness. He was much more tunnel-visioned and a good deal creepier. Like when he says "Send the boy up. SEND HIM UP!" there is such venom and evil lurking there that he has already reached that point before Epiphany he just needed the juice to turn it towards the city instead of Turpin. He was already insane, he just had it tunneled one way and it wasn't a point of recognition but an inevitable outcome when the character decides to kill everybody.
That is why I called it an interperative change.

Yes. Depp's Sweeney is noticeably more melancholy and less joyful than those Sweeneys.
He is bitter and out for revenge but he is fairly righteous for the first third of the play and his attack on Pirelli seems the beginning of the insanity and he just snaps at Epiphany.
I disagree. I think his insanity is often demonstrated in his very early in the musical. "There's a hole in the world..." like he repeats a few times, he gets furiously enraged at the beggar woman, almost hits Mrs. Lovett after being told what happened to his daughter and Lucy, and if his "My Friends" doesn't demonstrate a sense of brewing insanity, I don't know what does.
This, at least, can be demonstrated with the three "hailed" Sweeneys. George Hearn, who shouts like a madman throughout (his "At last my arm is complete again" is pure madness, nothing more, nothing less) is clearly insane from the beginning. Len Cariou on the OBC recording is a bit more reserved, but I think the madness still shows through (and live, he was definitely mad from the beginning). Michael Cerveris, from the revival, definitely strikes me as being very bloodthirsty and insane from the moment he walks into London.
In the movie he is just dead. There is no humor in him and the only thing lurking behind Sweeney's eyes is a boiling rage.
Granted. What humor he has is very dark indeed, and unlike other Sweeneys, he never even laughs during "Epiphany." But I'd argue that's the only major distinction.
You feel his snapping at Pierelli was inevitable because he was already full of such disgust and contempt for EVERYONE, he never gave the image of righteousness.
That's the way it is for every stage Sweeney. Todd has nothing but disgust for everyone from the first moment he appears in the stage show. Hence his very long "There's a hole in the world..." monologue.

I agree there was always madness growing in the stage Sweeneys, but there was just something more sinister in Depp's portrayal. Maybe it is the prospect of it being so close to him and he plays it much more reserved, but there is a boiling rage in him from the beginning and he is ready to slit a boy's throat. I mean even during "A Little Prince" he was only happy to have a way dispose people and I do not think there was any joy in the puns he and Mrs. Lovett made. I siply think Depp's Sweeney is darker and more enclosed as Carter's Lovett is slightly more sympathetic and motherly than the usually batty schemer on stage.
Just my views, though.

This movie started getting real good once he was killing people. I loved everything with Depp and Carter.
