Well, it's award's season, so I thought I'd start a thread for the show and its actors. Hopefully, there will be more to add to this list in the coming months. :)
The Fourth Annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards announced their nominations last night (1/9/06) and SV was nominated for visual f/x in a series. The VES Awards, which honor visual effects in commercials and videogames as well as features and TV, will be announced 2/15/06 at the Hollywood Palladium.
Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Series
"Invasion" - "Origin of Species" - Armen Kevorkian, Matt Scharf, John Karner, Neil Sopata
"Rome" - Episode 1 - Barrie Hemsley, James Madigan, Duncan Kinnaird, Joe Pavlo
"Smallville" - "Commencement" - Mat Beck, John Wash, John Han, Trent Smith

I think they've got a good shot at it!
The effects were generally good, especially for a tv budget.

I agree. Actually, the first full episode of SV I ever watched was this season's premiere; now I've seen 1 and 2 via reruns and a lot of 3 and 4 on DVD. But, the longer a show is on, the more people begin to watch it, the more ad $ they get, the bigger the special effects budget can be. So you can probably expect 6 to go above and beyond this season.

Most award shows for TV take a sample episode for the nomination committee to vote on. The show selects the episode that is provided, and the F/X in Commencement were awesome.
I can understand them offering up that episode to the committee.

It's nice that SV is getting nominated for secondary awards, but I don't think it's in the same class as some of the other show's it's up against in the "Hollywood political sense"............it's going to be tough.......Good luck to them.
AgentPat

WTH? I realize the sci-fi/fantasy genre is often overlooked for award consideration, and we're talking about a show on The WB, not HBO, but SV has WON quite a few awards (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279600/awards) from various industry committees and organizations - some top tier - and not just Hollywood-based. Top TV Series from ASCAP, Saturns for Supporting Actor (Rosenbaum) and DVD Television Programming, Compositing and Matte awards from VES, Leos (BC "Emmys") for Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up, and an Emmy for Sound Editing. This is in addition to the many other awards it was nominated for, which in itself is an accomplishment. So I think its chances are quite good in *any* category it's nominated for.
Compare SV's list of industry organizations it has received or won awards from to those of Gilmore Girls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238784/awards), 7th Heaven (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115083/awards), and One Tree Hill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368530/awards). In terms of industry accolades both nominated or won, SV is The WB's flagship. If *any* show on The WB has a chance at winning something for quality programming, it's SV.

I wasn't talking specifically about WB's shows only, but the other's that are simply in the top tier of current television shows.........

Hmm... I guess I'm just not understanding what you're saying here then, Milkman.
It's nice that SV is getting nominated for secondary awards,What's a "secondary award?" Are you talking about the award itself (Nominees for "Best Use of Left-Handed Widgets on a Rainy Day Award" vs. "Best Drama"), or the recognized prestige of the organization bestowing the honor (Association for Film and Television Janitors vs. The Emmy Awards)?
but I don't think it's in the same class as some of the other show's it's up againstThe fact that it's being nominated alongside those shows kinda puts it in their class, no? Otherwise, some other show would have been nominated in its place, right?
in the "Hollywood political sense"Well that could apply to almost everything, and not just Hollywood. All sorts of factors influence how people vote, and accolades are not necessarily awarded for skill or excellence. So I *think* I got your gist here. But the sci-fi, fantasy and horror genre has come a long way. Up until ROTK, no sci-fi/fantasy film ever won an Academy Award for Best Film, so I think such programming is finally starting to be recognized alongside the more traditionally oriented (read: serious drama) kind of entertainment.
it's going to be tough.......Good luck to them.Indeed! If it were an easy choice, it wouldn't be worth going through the nomination process. ;)

Artistically, the photographers on Smallville are top tier.
They shoot what looks like mini movies every week on an episodic TV budget.
I think Glen Winter is a highly talented DP and has shot some of the more beautiful episodes. He shot both Splinter and Memoria, for example.
He is top tier talent and he shouldn't be dissed because he works for a netlet show instead of for a show on one of the majors.

Other winners include Stephen Chow for outstanding film performance in "Kung Fu Hustle" and Lynn Chen who won outstanding newcomer for her performance in the film "Saving Face."

The awards celebrate achievement in the arts and entertainment and individual contributions in advancing the profile of the Asian American community.
Several special honors were awarded during the ceremony. NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson presented the Inspiration Award to AIDS researcher Dr. David Ho; the Building Bridges Award went to writer-director Quentin Tarantino; the Visibility Award was given to actress Lucy Liu; and a lifetime achievement honor was posthumously awarded to producer Ismail Merchant, who died in May. How do they determine who qualifies for the Best Actor/Actress category and Best Supporting Actor/Actress category? I thought Smallville had 3 main leads: Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk. Yet, only Tom and Kristin are nominated in the Best Actor/Actress category, with a Best Supporting Actor nod going to Michael Rosenbaum. I would have thought on Smallville, the supporting actors were anyone other than the three main leads.

I don't know anything about Nip/Tuck or Stargate SG - 1, but I hope that Lost and BG's waning creativity helps Smallville out. (I've stopped watching BG altogether, it's gotten to be a real bore this season.)

For some reason, the Saturn awards site seems to be down, but IIRC, this is the awards show that you can buy voting eligibility. Am I remembering the right awards? Last year it came up and I recall looking at who can vote. There are various levels of membership, but the lower rung was not very expensive. You had to be a higher rung to actually attend anything though. I wonder how many of the SV cast, if any, will attend?
Maybe it's in L.A? Avid? Roadtrip? :D
ETA: If these are awards presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror.. wth is Prison Break doing in there??? I loooove watching Wentworth growl and mumble as much as the next person, but I wouldn't categorize PB in any of those categories.

VISUAL EFFECTS SOCIETY ANNOUNCES THE 2006 FESTIVAL OF VISUAL EFFECTS AT THE FAMED EGYPTIAN THEATRE
Los Angeles, April 18, 2006 - THE 2006 Festival of Visual Effects has been set for July 7 - 9, 2006 at the famed Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California, it was announced by Visual Effects Society (VES) Executive Director Eric Roth.
"We are thrilled to be presenting our eighth annual Festival at the Egyptian for the first time," say Roth. "Each year the Festival has grown in scope and number of attendees. This venue shows how much the VES has expanded as well as the visual effects industry's continually increasing influence on the business of films, animation, games and television."
The Egyptian Theatre is a major Hollywood landmark of historical significance. Originally built in 1922 for impresario Sid Grauman, it was restored and renovated by the American Cinematheque, which now operates the state-of-the-art showcase Lloyd E. Rigler theatre with 650 seats and the Steven Spielberg theatre with 83 seats. The 2006 Festival of Visual Effects will utilize both theatres during the course of this year's festival activities.
Summer blockbusters such as Superman Returns and Poseidon; Cars, the latest animated feature from Pixar; and television fan favorite Smallville will all be the subjects of presentations at the 2006 Festival of Visual Effects. Panels, special screenings and other events are in the planning phase and a full line-up of activities and participants is expected to be announced by May 15.
The 2006 Festival of Visual Effects will be open to the public. Information on buying festival passes or tickets to individual events will soon be available at the official website for the 2006 Festival of Visual Effects, www.visualeffectssociety.com, or by contacting the VES office at (310) 822-9181 or info@visualeffectssociety.com.
One of Hollywood's youngest organizations, the VES was formed in 1997 in response to the explosive growth in the visual effects industry. It is a professional, honorary society, dedicated to advancing the arts, sciences, and applications of visual effects and to improving the welfare of its members by providing professional enrichment and education, fostering community, and promoting industry recognition. The VES is the entertainment industry's only organization representing the full breadth of visual effects practitioners including artists, technologists, model makers, educators, studio leaders, supervisors, PR/marketing specialists and producers in all areas of entertainment from film, television and commercials to music videos and games. Comprised of a diverse group of about 1,300 global members, the VES strives to enrich and educate its own members and members of the entertainment community at large through a multitude of domestic and international events, screenings and programs.

Well, here's an interesting article on recent changes to the Emmy nomination process that might make less popular shows more likely to get nominated.
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/entertainment/14949468.htm?source=rss&channel=dfw_entertainment
I'm not sure if the writer thinks that realistically any shows not on the four majors, HBO or FX really have a chance but here's what he said about one member of the Smallville cast he thinks should be honored:
Michael Rosenbaum, Smallville: Forget Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey: Rosenbaum has given us the most interesting portrayal of Superman villain Lex Luthor in the past 30 years. It helps that he’s playing a younger Luthor, whose journey toward pure evil is more fascinating than Clark Kent’s journey toward pure heroism. Rosenbaum has spent five seasons shifting Lex ever so slightly to the wrong side of the moral line, with internal and external forces beating him down. While Hackman played up Lex’s flamboyance and Spacey turns him into a sociopathic clown, Rosenbaum has had to rely on subtle change, a more difficult actor’s trick.
Not that I agree that Tom's portrayal of Clark isn't fascinating, I do agree that Lex has created the best Lex Luthor ever.
Here's hoping that Smallville will get some Emmy lovin' this year...
Not that I agree that Tom's portrayal of Clark isn't fascinating, I do agree that Lex has created the best Lex Luthor ever.
I don't think he was comparing Tom's ans Mike's portrayals, just their journeys/transformations in the "story writing quality" context..
anyways, I do not agree that Clark's journey towards supes is less fascinating, on the contrary.. :)

I believe sound editors put in extra layers of sound to give the actual recorded sound more depth.
The more action oriented episodes are usually the ones that get nominated because they have to add so much in to give the scene the right sounds. In the Oscars, you'll see the same thing. The action films are the ones that get nominated for this catagory more than other types of films.

The Saturn Awards (http://www.saturnawards.org/) are awarded for excellence in science fiction, fantasy and horror films and television. Members (open to the public) vote on the nominees in each category yearly.
Welling (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0919991/awards) (for Best Actor) and Rosey (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0742146/awards) (for Best Supporting Actor) have been nominated five years in a row. Rosey won the first year.

'Pirates' tops f/x nominations
Visual Effects Society announces fifth annual honors
By DAVID S. COHEN
Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" led the field with six noms as the Visual Effects Society announced its nominees for the fifth annual VES Awards.
"Pirates" took noms for visual effects in an f/x-driven motion picture and single visual effect of the year (the only pic to grab noms in both of those categories), as well as animated character in a live-action motion picture, created environment in a live-action motion picture, miniatures and models in a motion picture and compositing.
Continuing the VES' history of disagreeing with the Academy's visual effects branch, the other nominees for vfx in an effects-driven motion picture were Warner Bros.' "The Fountain" and Paramount's "Charlotte's Web." Neither made the Academy's list of seven semifinalists that will compete in the annual "bakeoff."
"Casino Royale" and "Superman Returns," both in the Acad bakeoff, were nominated for special effects, which hails work in in-camera practical effects, where visual effects noms usually salute effects created in post.
"Blood Diamond," "Children of Men," "Flags of Our Fathers" and "The Da Vinci Code" will compete in the supporting visual effects category.
"Children of Men," "Poseidon" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" were nommed along with "Pirates" for single visual effect.
"Charlotte's Web" took two noms for top animated character in a live-action film for its eponymous talking spider and for the talking rat Templeton.
"X-Men" and "Superman Returns" did not fare well at the VES. "Superman" drew only the special effects nom and "X-Men" only the nom for single effect.
By contrast, Warner box office bomb "Poseidon" took three noms.
In television, "Battlestar Galactica," "Prehistoric Park" and "Smallville" took noms for visual effects in a series, while "Alias," "Commander-in-Chief" and "ER" took nominations for supporting effects.
Nominees in all categories will present their work Saturday at the Skirball Cultural Center at the Show & Tell, which is free to VES members and $20 for the general public. Voting will take place online between Jan. 22 and Feb. 6.
Winners of the VES Awards will be announced Feb. 11 at the Kodak Grand Ballroom. Also, visual effects pioneer Dennis Muren will receive the VES lifetime achievement award that night.

“COEURS" COMPOSER
MARK SNOW
NOMINATED FOR
FRENCH CÉSAR AWARD
Awards Presented February 24
(Paris, France) Film composer Mark Snow has been nominated for a César Award, the main national film award in France, for Best Music Written for a Film for "Coeurs" (International Title: "Private Fears in Public Places"). Snow is the only American composer nominated in the category. "Coeurs," adapted from an award-winning play, offers a darkly comedic glimpse into the lives of six lonely characters and the strange circumstances that connect them. It also received recognition in seven other categories including Best Director (Alain Resnais). The award ceremony takes place on February 24.
Snow has received numerous Emmy nominations and ASCAP awards. Last year, he became the first composer to receive ASCAP's prestigious Golden Note Award for lifetime achievement and impact on music culture. Past Golden Note recipients include Elton John, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Stevie Wonder. He has enjoyed great popular success as well. Mark Snow's iconic "X-Files" theme remains a worldwide phenomenon.
Classically trained at Julliard, he continues to blend his orchestral style with electronica influences. His impressive list of over one hundred television and feature film credits includes "Starsky and Hutch," "Crazy in Alabama," "Disturbing Behavior," "Millenium" and "Ghost Whisperer."

Well, maybe After School special/issue episodes aren't every fans' favorite, but they tend to get awards.
For example, "Rage" has been nominated for a Prism award in the Television Drama catagory. The Prism awards are given to movies and tv shows that bring health issues to light, or something...
I didn't actually read this that closely, but "Rage" was nominated (I guess) because of it's dealing with drug addiction...
http://prweb.com/releases/2007/3/prweb511223.htm
The PRISM Awards are for productions and performances featuring the accurate depiction of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction, as well as mental health.
Okay, as much as l like the episode is Ollie getting strung out on a drug that doesn't exist really an accurate depiction of drug addiction?
I dunno, but I guess they thought so...

*shrug*"Addiction" can be both a physical and a psycho symptomatic condition. Either the brain is affected or the body, or both. Getting "addicted" to anything - particularly a drug (whether it's real or fictional) is probably not something one wants to do, and there are ways to avoid the predilection and/or break the habit. Sometimes the best way to explain something is through metaphor or fictional accounts. Rage (and Void) are examples of the latter.

Indeed, and it's come as a bit of a surprise...
"Programs that appeal to younger audiences have also fared poorly, as evidenced by the lone nod to the CW network ("Smallville," for sound editing), after predecessors the WB and UPN combined for six last year."
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117968700"The CW, the newest broadcast network, was no more successful at attracting Emmy nominations than viewers in its disastrous first season: It had just one, for sound editing on its young-Superman series 'Smallville.'"
http://www.popmatters.com/pm/news/article/46162/emmys-give-the-sopranos-a-15-nomination-farewell/"Proving once again that the Emmys are an outdated institution on the edge of irrelevance, the nominations came out today, and outside from a few pleasant surprises, it’s more of the same – the same shows being rewarded, the same shows being snubbed, etc.
'Gilmore Girls' and 'Veronica Mars' – two shows with dedicated (if not small) fanbases that ended this past May, both got zero nominations. In fact, The CW network as a whole only got one – a sound editing nod for 'Smallville.'
'Veronica Mars,' in the estimation of many television critics including myself, was one of the best shows on television during its three year run, and has exactly zero nominations during that time to show for it.
'Battlestar Galactica,' another show destined to be ignored by the Emmys, at least picked up much-deserved directing and writing nominations. Still, no love for the series as a whole, and the outstanding actors like Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos are ignored. Plus, it’s on cable (but not HBO), so even less chance it’ll get noticed."

CW a low priority for Emmy voters
New network scores only one nomination
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER
Attention Emmy voters: There's a new broadcast network that you apparently have never heard of. It's called The CW.
Following its inaugural year of broadcasting, the CW scored just one Emmy nom on Thursday. That's less than Animal Planet, Cartoon Network and the History Channel earned, and equal to those procured by Turner Classic Movies, Starz, National Geographic Channel and Hallmark Channel. Hell, even a Cingular commercial scored a nod.
Adding to the insult, the single CW nom was in a less visible category: The sound editing competish, for an episode of "Smallville."
Of course, the CW's execs aren't new to Emmy snubdom. The CW precursors The WB and UPN were notoriously shut out of the major Emmy categories year after year; the best either could do was an occasional nod in some of the craft categories. Like sound editing.
The snub was particularly noteworthy last year, when the TV academy altered its voting structure (putting more of the onus on a blue ribbon panel to pick nominees) in order to encourage more fresh blood. The change was nicknamed the "Lauren Graham rule," using the "Gilmore Girls" star as the poster child for critical faves usually passed over by the Emmy process.
The results were mixed, however -- and Graham wasn't nominated anyway. This year the TV academy altered the process again, bringing more of the overall voting body's voice back into the process. It didn't help Graham or "Gilmore Girls," even though that CW show aired its final hurrah this spring.
Psst, TV academy members -- just FYI, the CW airs locally on KTLA, Channel 5.

yea scifi stuff tend not to win these kind of awards which suck cause some scifi shows are way better is no reguards then some regular comedies. and dramas out there. Well we can always hope these shows do much better on scifi award shows like saturn awards and others like that. I know smallville has won some of those right? and jules verne awards too right?

Tom Welling won Choice TV Actor Action Adventure at the Teen Choice Awards, or so the AP is reporting here:

I've yet to see proof one way or the other if he was there to pick up the surf board, but an earlier tweet from a guy had Tom at the grocery store in Vancouver today so I don't think he was there....

Thanks Triplet!
It's so good to see him winning! He deserves the recognition so much! I'm very happy for him!

Ah, the TCAs...
Has it really been five years since Mr. Welling sent the 'net into a tizzy by uttering a couple of coy sentences to a random entertainment reporter?
Those were the days.

Yeah, I thought about that... the 'something special' comments, right? Or was it 'something big'??
Those were the days.
He's not one to speak out of turn anymore, though, is he?
Sadly, it's true.

I was really surprised he won, so I'm glad.
Although, to be honest, I think he was the best pick of the bunch:
Choice TV Actor: Action Adventure
Thomas Dekker, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Matthew Fox, Lost
Josh Holloway, Lost
Milo Ventimiglia, Heroes
Tom Welling, Smallville

I honestly thought it would come down to Milo or Thomas Dekker. Not too many teenagers watch Lost and I always thought Smallville lost its steam to the general public. But I am happy that Tom is still getting awards for a character he's played over 8 years now.

Yeah, I thought it would be Milo, but Heroes isn't what it was and no one saw The Sarah Conner Chronicles, so maybe it's not surprising.
Tom is also the best looking guy on that list and, IMO, the best actor of the bunch so he deserves it. I'm glad a bunch of poll crazy teens felt the same way.
I don't remember this what happened.
In 2004 he teased that he'd just signed for a big new project that never came to pass.
Most people think that was just before Superman Returns went south for him. One theory was that he'd tentatively signed but The WB told him he couldn't do it because it would have killed Smallville. The Summer 2004 was when they were in production at the start of the 4th season.
The ending of the 4th Season could very well have acted as a series ender, him throwing the crystal and the FOS forming, but as you know that isn't what it ended up being.
I think they'd planned on that being the end, and he would go onto to doing Superman movies, but it didn't happen. Maybe it's just as well.
Some of Smallville's best episodes happened well after the 4th season and the 5th season is probably one of the best, I was fond of the 8th even though I know it wasn't popular with a lot of people.
I'm looking forward to the 9th season and Tom doing something completely different on the big screen.

I think overall, the 8th season was pretty popular. It introduced a lot of the cool elements we see in the mythos like Clark and Lois working at the DP and Clark starting off as the Red and Blue Blur. The season finale left a bad taste in everyone's mouth and since it was the most recent episode, people are going to act as if season 8 was one of the worst since it's fresh in everyone's minds. But if you look at it objectively and think about the season as a whole, it was definitely one of the best seasons of the series IMO.

I completely agree with you.
Given the grades I'd given it overall, ratings wise: it's the top season I've reviewed.
If you'd taken Power out of the season (it really screwed up the averages), it would have gotten 4.4 on average, instead of the 4.3 it did get.
Even at a 4.3 average, it's still the best rated season.

No, I don't believe he was there... Some dude on twitter said he saw him at the grocery store yesterday afternoon and the guy is from Vancouver.

You hadn't seen that before?
I keep a spread sheet on my review grades so I can keep track of what rating I've given a particular episode and I like to look at patterns too. I mentioned it last in my review of Beast, since the 20th episode is usually quite sucky and that one wasn't.
(Look at the dip in the charts for most previous 20th episodes.)
Beast was awesome in comparison to most seasons.

I personally don't get the love for Season 5. I don't there there were any standout bad episodes, but in the same breath I dodn't remember any standout great episodes either. It was a bunch of average to above average episodes for me.
As for Season 8, great first half, terrible second half sums up how I feel about it.

me too but their was still some good moments in second half like hex/stillote, and bits and pieces of rest of the season.

It has probably the best three episode starter of any season in the series: Arrival, Mortal and Hidden. The third episode of the season, historically, usually sucks.
They also did a good job introducing Brainiac that season and the episode where Jonathan died, Reckoning, and the next one where Clark deals with the aftermath, Vengeance, are probably two of the most powerful episodes of the series.
I LOVE the 5th season. It had some stinkers, Aqua, Thirst, but there were so many wonderful episodes and the overall story arc with Brainiac was probably one of the best of the series.

I would agree that the first half was great, and there was a section in the middle that got the show side-tracked, but there were quite a few episodes after Lana left that were wonderful: Beast, Injustice, and Hex... I even liked Stiletto more than I would have probably otherwise because Erica's Lois was awesome in that, a few picayunish things aside...
I loved the 8th season, even given it's disappointing season finale.

The whole Jonathan dies, and Clark blames himself is more of a negative then a positive for me. I personally don't care for storylines that put blame on Clark doing something stupid, which inturn make him depressed(which was indirectly set up in Hidden)

Triplet, I completely agree with you on both season 5 and 8. There was an energy about them that I think 6 and 7 on the whole lacked, despite several good episodes.

yea i liked alot of elements from season 5, 6, not ot much from season 7, and good majority of season 8. I hope season 9 is good too. As for stinkers i didnt think aqua was a bad episode from season 5. Their is way wrost episodes out their. Plus wasnt aqua one of the highest rated episodes of the season then? i am pretty sure it was since it sparked the whole interest in doing aquaman spin off which we know ultimately didnt happen do to the dam wb/upn merger.
