This has got to be one of the best shows to come off of that little island country called Brittian. I mean lets face it this is classic brittish humour at its best. Rimmer, Lister, Cat, Krytan, and Holly will forever be part of pop culture of the '90s. Season 7 finaly came out on dvd on the 10th, while not the best it did have some really good epsiodes.

I just wanted to make a thread that fans of this show could come and talk about it in. So if you a fan please share your thoughts about Red Dwarf with other fellow fans. Boys from the Dwarf!

See I thought 4,5, & 6 were the best season where some of the greatest Eps came from.

The one with the female version of cat...I found the first one at every site I looked on, and I already have it, but I cant find this one anywhere...I know it probably sucks as much as the first, but I'd still like to see it...

From what I heard, it wasn't a full episode but like a five-minute interstitial meant to sell the series to a network. It contains some dialogue between the Cat (Terry Farrell from Becker and Deep Space Nine) and Lister, and turns the Cat into a Klingon-like Xena character.

Even the U.S. pilot had some funny moments, but this one sounds irredeemably terrible.

The Joker

well this one was written by Grant and Naylor, and from what it sounded like, it was actually parts of the first pilot with new scenes where they reshot Rimmers parts and The Cats parts

Omg i just found the American Pilot eps, what the hell were Doug and Rob thinking??? they sucked major ass, same jokes but where they were funny in the British version, they sucked total ass in the American one.... and in one version they had cat as a woman... like cat woman...

First pilot with kyrton (dont ask)

The other attempt (with a cat woman) (after some proper clips)

Geez, the American actors just really don't do it for me. I think Kryten's the same though.

I love Red Dwarf and I'm disappointed they never got the movie off the ground. To me the series is closest thing to Douglas Adams and Hitchhiker's Guide moreso than the new movie was.

http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/news/2008/09/19/new-red-dwarf-specials-confirmed/

reddwarf.co.uk has the facts. As announced by Robert Llewellyn for Grant Naylor Productions this week at the UKTV seasonal press launch, the project is a short series of brand new specials to celebrate the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf.
Doug Naylor will be masterminding the four half-hour instalments, and the regular cast will all be reprising their iconic roles. They are being made by GNP for UKTV's free-to-air channel, Dave - our new best friends!
Red Dwarf repeats on Dave - including an anniversary weekend run - have picked up remarkable numbers since the channel was reborn on Freeview, and it's becoming clear to all concerned that the show is picking a new, third generation audience. With the usual involvement from Red Dwarf partners BBC Worldwide, you can also expect international broadcasts to follow (and, we'd imagine, a top-quality DVD release in the fullness of time).
It's very new news to me - I really only fully heard the details yesterday, Robert told comedian/host Michael McIntyre. We're doing four new shows with the original cast. Two of them are going to be, like, proper episodes of Red Dwarf. One of them is so exciting I've been asked not to say anything about that because other people will steal the idea - and it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. And the other one is a kind of behind-the-scenes-y... the truth. There's been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, about whether there's going to be a movie and whether we all get on, all those things... The downside for me, which is just dawning on me now, is I've got to do the 'rubber' thing again, which I haven't done for ten years.
For the record, and direct from the makers, the details of the four shows right now - while wholly subject to change - are:

Show One - The Making Of The Specials A highly entertaining look at what goes on behind the scenes on a Red Dwarf production.
Show Two - Red Dwarf Special: Part One The cast get back into character, and costume, a decade on...
Show Three - Red Dwarf Special: Part Two The adventure continues...
Show Four - A Clip Show With a Serious Difference The cast do it their way. Red Dwarf as you have never, ever seen it before!

The shows will broadcast sometime in 2009 and, if successful, could pave the way for further Red Dwarf TV projects. Thanks to movie and broadcaster wrangles, Grant Naylor haven't been in a position to produce new Red Dwarf since Series VIII went out to audiences of over eight million in 1999. This exciting development suggests a new and shiny future for everyone's favourite sci-fi comedy.
To be kept in the loop as we cover the new production, register your email address with reddwarf.co.uk in the box at the bottom of the page.
The Boys from the Dwarf are back!

I wonder if it will pick up where series 8 left off... I hope Naylor has written the actual episodes cos even though series 7 wasn't the greatest, series 8 was a bit poor and I think the reason was that they had other writers come in.. Or was it series 7 where they had other writers doing it? I can't remember, either way 8 was bad so hopfully it'll be back to the quality of the earlier series.

I think Krytens suit looks good but what the hell have they got Chris Barrie dressed in...

I cautiously optimisitc.. Series 8 had a few moments but it was definately a poor immitation of the greatness it once was. The thing that has me worried is this Corronation Street rubbish.. I'm hoping it'll only be some kind of introduction or seg-way type thing and not actually part of the episode, like Lister has lost his memory and got a part on it or something. That's too 'series 8y' for my liking.

I didn't realise it was gonna be set 9 years after series 8 either which is a bit of a shame 'cos I wanted to see what happens when they all went through to the mirror universe... but atleast this means there is no kochanski.

And hopfully this will help out with a movie getting made. I think if they did a movie they should do it as somewhat of a reboot and start with Lister been put in stasis lock and waking up 3 million years later where Similants are wiping humans out across the solar system and play it up as a sci-fi/action comedy.

Well that was different, gotta see how the other two specials turn out and also see what happened in the last 9 years e.g. how Rimmer became a hologram again and what happened to everyone else, etc...also I felt the CGI was abit off, I loved old Red Dwarf for it's cheesy models and special effects and it's great writing and laughs, I think that's why I didn't enjoy the last season cause it had too much CGI and none of the great stories or laughs like the past seasons

daywalker2007
04-11-2009, 04:10 AM
indeed,

part of the reason why Red Dwarf became so popular is because the cheap sets and live audience filming was done so expertly.

Red Dwarf has never really relied on special effects, its been about the stories and the actors.

I still didn't get the new episode, and how it fits in after season 9!

maybe the next part will clarify!

Vapor
04-11-2009, 12:21 PM
Well i missed the first episode but I did manage to catch the first 10 mins on Dave-ja-vu and based on that, it doesn't look fantastic. I know it's only the first one and I only saw 10 minutes of it so it might come into it's own in the next 2 eps.. But I dunno.

Naylor has this thing about doing the movie, which with an actual movie budget would be really good but.. trying to make the tv show more movie like, it just doesn't work with Red Dwarf.

Oh and Red Dwarf NEEDS a laughter track.

I've got one word for it... lame.

It's just not Red Dwarf at all IMO.. I dunno what made them think it was a good idea. I know Red Dwarf is a comedy but there was always a strong and serious sci-fi element.. but they've turned it into a light hearted, 'dumbed down/kiddy/Doctor Who' kind of sci-fi.. and it's not very funny on top of that! As I said earlier, it also doesn't work without the laughter track imo.

I don't get it.. My biggest problem is the story, it's just not working for me at all but the cast have obviously still got 'it'.. so why couldn't they just do a normal Dwarf series. The stuff they have alluded to with Kochanski etc, why not just do that..

And why cast Sophie Winkleman and make her talk with a crap russain accent? Her normal accent is sexy lol.

That was amazing. I'd honestly put Part 3 up there with Dimension Jump and Back to Reality as one of the best ever made. It ended in a way that if they made another series, they could, but if this is the last episode of Red Dwarf ever... I'm very, very satisified.

Totally agree ....

After watching all three parts that was bad on almost every level ...

The loss of the laughter track makes it feel empty and the story was dire.

I didn't bother with the 3rd episode but I heard it had something to do with a despair squid.. So does that mean the whole trip to 'earth' and them finding out they are TV characters was just an hallucination or has the whole of series 8 been retconned as a hallucination too?

'Cos that would atleast make it passable imo. I would hate the idea of them finding out they are tv characters for real to be part of official cannon..

I can't really beleive they self referenced themselves as tv characters though.. It's a very bottom of the barrell idea that's not really very sci-fi.. it's what cartoons do, and even then it's normally tongue in cheek or not really done as a serious plot point. And on top of that it was handled very half assedly IMO..

That scene from episode 2 where they go to the sci-fi shop with the geeky owner was pretty cringe worthy...

OK, It's not a very bottom of the barrel idea as you call it. It's an idea that is hard to do well and easy to do badly. Dwarf just managed it with this three parter. I was fearing League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse level of ****, but what I got was a slow starting but ultimately satisfying Red Dwarf.

How is anything in Red Dwarf not tongue in cheek? Ever? It's just designed to everything in a silly way, even the sci-fi exposition is purposefully stupid.

The 3rd episode featured the despair squid (or a female one, elation squid). It made the whole story a long what if, but didn't do anything to season 8's continuity.

Personally found the geek shop funny. The only thing I found cringe worthy in all three episodes were the annoying kids who explain what happened to Kochanski. As a story it was solid enough, entertaining in the end, and just took a while to warm up (wouldn't you after nine years off?).

Here's hoping for a series ten (I read somewhere that Grant doesn't want to do series 9, just skip straight to 10... can't remember where though)

Personally found the geek shop funny. The only thing I found cringe worthy in all three episodes were the annoying kids who explain what happened to Kochanski. As a story it was solid enough, entertaining in the end, and just took a while to warm up (wouldn't you after nine years off?).

Yeah that bit with the kids was really bad too. I can't really comment properly 'cos I only really saw the 2nd ep.. As a whole it might work better than seperately but.. was just off, to me.

Yeah, perhaps I worded it wrong. I dunno, it was just very different (even to series 8) and off to me. I know a lot of Dwarf is parody and silly tongue i ncheek moments.. I'm trying to think how to explain what I mean here but there is serious comedic/story telling reasoning behind it, if you will.. With this new stuff, it felt very different and like a pale immitation of what it once was. It's like how the new Dr Who feels different to the original Who run.

Perhaps it was just 'cos the laughter track was gone that is just changed how it all felt.. The gang obviously still have it and I can see the writing is still there but I just don't like the idea they went with at all...

I just think the main cast looked jaded they are plainly going through the motions the premise of Dwarf is still solid imo and the Dave three parter had a good storyline that was typical dwarf. IMO it needs a new cast of new characters.

The truth hurts.

They where clearly just going through the motions the show needs a shot in the arm, a freash breath like they did with Doctor Who.

Sorry imo they where kinda average they said all the right things and the show was fine but the energy just wasnt there the closest i saw to the old cast magic was Cat argueing with Lister about cloths in the first episode after that it got very humdrum from the guys.

As a small channel 4 type english comedy show it can still work in its present form but to totally revitalise the franchise to rival Dr Who it needs either a brand new cast or an extended cast alongside the veterans who are slowly bled in to replace them.

First off its the BBC, Second why in the world would it need to rival Dr Who? Dr Who is just shy of a full blow kids tv show, where Red Dwarf is and always will be a adult comedy.

They no need to replace any of the cast as the whole point is that lister and lister alone is the only human left alive, if some was off in the way they interacted that was the average writing that did it.

Nah I think the guys still have it, if anything, it was the writing which was poor or let it down imo.. which is a shame really, because like I just said, the gang still have 'it' and it was great seeing them together again so, providing they could plan out a proper series and shape up the writing, more in line with the middle few series, then i'd well be up for a series 9.

My fave series would probably be series 6.. but 4 and 5 are good too with 5 probably been it's peak.

Although I do enjoy Better Than Life and Stasis Leak from series 2 and Polymoprh from series 3 was obviously one of the better episodes too (C.L.I.T.O.R.I.S)..

I thought the easter specials were great, not quite on par with a lot of episodes but still beats almost all sci-fi on nowadays :whatever: Currently rewatching the whole show, off to watch Season 2 episode 3 now

Who doesnt know its BBC? I was referencing the size of the show C4 shows tend to be smaller in scale but have great writing shows like black books, the IT crowd and father ted for e.g.

Dr Who is aimed at kids but it was revitalised for a modern market while Dwarf still looks a little dated im not saying it shouldnt keep its adult humour.

Though the point is Lister as the last man alive i still think there is room for more characters the universe is a big place throw in a couple of aliens or something the old cast just look tired maybe they need to recast the main cast?..

Hmm. I've been watching Red Dwarf and I just got to series 7, episode 3. The one where alterna-Kochanski shows up. I gotta say, I'm not a fan. They randomly retconned a relationship between her and Dave into the past, swapped the actress, changed her personality, and didn't even bother to make her Scottish! It's just too much. I hope she grows on me, but I'm not expecting much. I'm just glad Rimmer comes back eventually (according to Wikipedia, anyway).
