i'm guessing the first hellboy was drawn on a school paper or something? lol
campbell551
01-17-2006, 10:10 AM
i disagree. The grey scale Donatello is not nearly disproportionately tall enough or skewed vertically enough to be of Michael Turners style.
If you check, Donatello is about 7 heads tall as opposed to every one of Turners figures being about 10 or so.
...not a Turner fan obviously.

Right. I guess I should have tempered my anti-Turner propaganda a little more. For the record, if someone should happen to enjoy his artwork (and I understand that there are these people out there) then, that is their prerogative. You should not feel bad just because I don't like it.
I would like to point out that those who complain about Rob Liefeld should, then, also complain about Michael Turner. It's like they were separated at birth. the only difference is Rob Liefeld did it all terribly wrong first. Way to ride the coat tails to disaster, Michael.
And now back to our regularly scheduled program already in progress.

I've got the Michael Turner "The Flash" poster in my room as well as his Wonder Woman poster...and they both are about 10 heads tall...but I think they look great.
http://www.megacitycomics.co.uk/acatalog/poster_flash_turner.jpghttp://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0504/11/wonderwomanposterth.jpg
But I also have the Batman and Superman Jim Lee posters and they both seem equally huge.
http://www.superherotimes.com/assets/newsimages/dcd111204facingposters.jpg
Well, to each their own, but I think Turner's probably my favorite artist. And for the coolness factor, I also have hanging a superman cape, batman and superman x-mas ornaments, a giant Flash printout using rasterbater, and this joker poster:
http://www.superherostuff.com/OtherItems/Images/killing_joke_poster2.jpg
Haha...poor girls that meet me think I'm cool...then they see my room and it's too late :)
Oh and ampersand....I love the art!

the thing about those two turner posters is that without the fancy colors, your left with a week base drawing. Someone should give his colorist a medal for salvaging cr*p art into decent pics

One thing that I think could help you is try studying female lip shapes, even though you hate him, Michael Turner I think does a good job at drawing feminine faces

actually about six months ago i was able to draw a girl exactly as michael turner does. I read a how to draw thing by him in wizard and used it as my girl drawing bible. a month later i realized that that was the only girl he could draw and i've been working on drawing more realistic women since then. I know i suck now but im working on it.

Since when does Christian Humanism give "Reasons FOR Abortion"?
ampersand
02-06-2006, 08:28 PM
Ha, i didn't even notice that! That title is very misleading, because it's very anti abortion. It gives different "reasons"(excuses) and then disputes them.

Its a nice start- but the way you have used your lines is making the hulk look a bit furry rather than have muscles.
ampersand
02-07-2006, 11:16 PM
Yeah i noticed that too, but my plan is to have the image look as if it is shaking slightly (from hulk's slam) without using any lame photoshop effects. I haven't tried this before, so I have no idea if it will work.
And for that very reason i have a copy of the original pencils saved on my pc, so if need be i can redo the inking.

yeah . . . about the original entry . . . I didn't think anything was particularly wrong with it; was just wondering . . . the inks are a bit too much, I guess . . . have you ever used technical pens? They're pricey, but worth it if you're into comic inking . . . .
the new pic definitely looks better . . .
ampersand
02-10-2006, 09:01 PM
I do own and use many technical pens, i just don't like them as much because you don't get unique lines. I usually use a brush and ink (like in the Hulk piece), but if I'm in a rush, i'll use a brush pen (which i used for the robin piece above) Brush pens are basically markers with brush shaped felt tips that allow you to vary your lines very easily. If used correctly they're almost as good as a brush and ink.

The Question

In the DC animated universe, the Grey Ghost is a fictional TV superhero. It was Bruce Wayne's favorite T.V. show as a child. In one episode of Batman: The Animated series, some psychopath was commiting arson based on an old episode of the Grey Ghost show. All the footage of the show had been destroyed in a fire, except the film that they let the staring actor keep after the show was cancelled. The actor who played the Grey Ghost was voiced by Adam West.

My thoughts EXACTLY.
With the hulk piece, I REALLY feel like you should make his eyes visible. Keep the black surrounding them but give him like bright white beady eyes. It would add a lot of intensity to the pic.
doommachine
02-12-2006, 01:11 PM
Oh, and the sky-blue background seems to go against the intended mood. It's kind of confusing. Maybe a gradient from like a bright orange around the hulk/towards the bottom and like a deep purple up top.

I didn't get long to work on them, but here are my basic redesigns for the four ninja turtles.
The idea is that they all wear gear that is atuned with their personalities. the armband each wears has the color that is associated with them in the cartoon. They all wear kneepads, but none wear armpads.
Leonardo wears basic ninja turtle gear, as pictured a few posts ago. He is EXTREMELY focused on his ninja training, way more than his brothers. Is also obsessed with being a great team leader. spends way too much time with splinter. He and Raph argue constantly. His bandana is blue as usual.
Donatello wears goggles, gloves, construction boots and a backpack, because he is a mechanic and electrician. the goggles have purple lenses as a tribute to the cartoons.
Michaelangelo is still the clown, but doesn't have the cali surfer attitude. he loves superheroes and mexican wrestling, so his outfit resembles both. He is wearing an orange full face mask with the mouth area cut out. he wears boxer's trunks with a belt with a big M on it like in the original cartoon. His armband is on the left to show that he is the oddball of the group.
Raphael has even more attitude here than in any other version. He fights dirty and dishonorably, although he is the best fighter of the four. Leo hates how dishonorable he is and is constantly mad at him for something. Because he loves to fight so much, he is covered in scars. He has a scar over his left eye, and his bandana (still red) is stitched up where the cut that caused the scar cut it. He also carries other blades as well as his sais.

I use Faber Castell Pitt artist pens. They come in many colors but I only have a few black ones and a set of greyscale ones. The best part about them is they actually use india ink. They work great and last pretty long if you take care of them. Once the tip gets messed up I open a new one and use the old to block in large blacks (like on the batman above). I've seen them at most art stores, check em out.

If you use the middle point of the star as a guide to the middle of his chest, the left arm is coming out of his back.

As CyberMonkeyTron would say, I can't find the lighting source here.
:p
Have I become that predictable?
Anyway- I think its pretty cool- it would be nice if his head or shield cast a shadow though.
I dont know about anyone else- but I feel like the changes you made to his face during inking make him look a little evil. He had some steely determiniation in the pencils, but he looks a little nazi like in the inks. I think some of it in my mind is his helmet looks like a nazi cap. All the dents you have put in it make it look a little floppy rather than hard.
I agree about the colouring though- do it!!!

I see what you mean in the face, I might go back and change it because I like the pencil face more. His hat is floppy looking because it's covered in clothe (at least I think it's supposed to be). I really don't know if I drew it correctly because the only refrence for the helmets I used was the WWII issues of FABLES.

And your right about the head and shield not casting shadows too. Two more things to fix!
You really know your stuff, Cybermonkeytron. Thanks alot.

Updated with Cybermonkeytron's suggested fixes. I realized I forgot the shield strap too when I was adding shadow on his arm.

Dude, that Cap is awesome. I love the style. It really combines the Ultimates style of shading with you own. Massively awesome.
The only thing I would change, and I realize you can't do this anymore at the stage it's at, is *his left foot. I would make it point a little more outward. It would make him look a little more planted in his stance. More balanced. Awesome though.

thats okay, you could fix it with a background.
if you were to make it look like he was running and then suddenly came to a quick stop...his foot would have been positioned like that to stop himself.
if you dont know what i mean i can come up with a quick crappy drawing to show you what i mean.
annnnnnnd of course, it looks great. i like the addition of other colors to show lighting.

That's true. Although, even when you slide to a stop (which I do a lot) it's better to angle your leading foot into it because if you don't and you stop too suddenly you'll fall right to your shoulder (something I also do a lot :P jk).

i can see that. i was envisioning it as suitable because of how far back he's leaning.

I think the foot thing is a result of bad shading, because I originally drew it exactly how you said. I'll try to fix it in photoshop and see what happens.
I'm glad you guys are liking it though!

Another suggestion Amp, have you thought of drawing female characters?
How's your vacation going btw?
ampersand
02-22-2006, 12:24 AM
The reason you don't see many females on here is that I pretty much suck at drawing women. I draw women more often then men when I'm doodleing because I want to get better, but my finished work is almost always men because my pics of men always look better.
And vacation is pretty awesome. I was at a party tonight, third of this vacation, which is awesome. I'm going skiing thursday too so that will be fun.

Really? I feel the opposite.I think I draw women better then men lol
Good to hear

That is because you are a woman. People tend to be able to draw people of their own sex much better.

I think if I had boobs I'd have a better understanding of how to draw them.
I just need more experience. :)

Yes, artists should be given free access to boobs so we can better understand them. I'm going to try this as a pick up line.

Haha are you asking me why real boobs and boobs on paper aren't equal? I think you know the answer to that.
