Sigh, breaking into comics...if only it were that easy.

While I know I've got a lot of raw talent and potential, I don't think I'm all that near to where I have to be in order to really forge ahead in my field. Competition is incredibly stiff.

Heh, funny you should mention that,

So one guy from mcfarlane contacted me after receiving my resume, so he sent me a sculpture kit to work on and send back so they could get an idea of my skill level. Well sadly, never heard back from them.

But then, a few months later, ANOTHER guy from mcfarlane interested in my work emailed me after stumbling across my website. So I emailed him back telling how I had been contacted before yet received no response. And now I have yet to hear back from him lol. Sigh.

So I dunno.

This is a shout out to the vast population of SHH. Here's the skinny: I'm in the middle of a major overhaul of a lot of the pieces on my site which are old and no longer indicative of my current skill. I have made significant tweaks to an old pic, however I ended up making two versions:

One with harsh light and highlighting:
http://willdrawforfood.com/BatmanFirstNightOutRevised.jpg

And one without:
http://willdrawforfood.com/BatmanFirstNightOutRevised2.jpg

Each have their own pros and cons and if anyone has any feedback or critique on either of them then by all means. My question is which one do you guys believe is stronger and why? I personally prefer the one with the harsh lighting, but please, any feedback will be much appreciated.

Alrighty, I've started making major revisions to this piece. First order of business in making this piece everything it can be: I've decided to give bats his gauntlets, therefore making his mask the last thing he'd have to put on (which would make more dramatic sense)

They aren't finished obviously. They only have the first level of detail and the basic concept I'm shooting for. Crits, feedback, or approval more then welcome.

Heh, yeah I know about his eye pieces. However, I tend to entertain my own fancy and take certain liberities to an extent when it comes to drawing these characters, especially if I have a story behind them. Take for example, my joker bust:

http://www.willdrawforfood.com/TheJoker.jpg

It's still the same character; just my own interpretation I guess. And all of the changes have meaning that could be plausible in the batman mythos.

Another gauntlet color test. I'm thinking of ditching the engraved pattern all together and just going with the flat glossy metallic look. Finished version will have the three spikes and will look a bit more worn. Plus, I made some minor tweaks to the face that were bothering me (check the original a page or two back.) I agree. Eventually, the whole piece will have both a background and the same detail and texture quality as the gauntlet. Right now I'm basically just polishing a turd lol.

There really is so much wrong with it that I'm trying to fix. The face is pissing me off, the rough pencil outlines are eyesores. Do you have specific brushes you use for textures? I have real trouble trying to implement textures in my tablet work; I just can't wrap my headaround how to do it. Similarly, I also have trouble with smooth blending.

Do you have specific brushes you use for textures? I have real trouble trying to implement textures in my tablet work; I just can't wrap my headaround how to do it. Similarly, I also have trouble with smooth blending.

Well, to get down the basic texture, I go through a few processes in photoshop.

For most patterns, I create a new layer and I lay down a black and white pattern of the texture I want to apply to an area of the piece. Then, I use the emboss filter on it, making sure the light source is hitting it appropriately. Once that's done, I change the blending options and opacity to whatever I need in order to get it to look like it's actually texture. From there, I'll either airbrush, liquify, blur, or blend whatever I need to in order to get it to gell with the rest of the piece.

The process was slightly different though with the gauntlet because intead of creating a pattern and embossing it, I copied a non-glossy version of the gauntlet and used the chrome effect. I then made it an overlay and adjusted the opacity to get just the right amount of highlight.

(might show up a tad dark on some screens)

Yeah, right now, it's just a simple picture of a younger Bruce Wayne. I was thinking of jazzing it up with a background and some ambient lighting coming from above and below. But anyway, crits welcome on what I have so far...thanks!

Thanks man :) Actually, I've decided that the image above will in actuality be a reflection in a head-on shot of a mirror in the batcave. (Think V for Vendetta in the beginning when V is getting ready to go out.) Below the mirror will be a work desk littered with objects he will be taking with him on his first night out, as well as unfinished gadgets and text books on metallergy, physics, engineering, and auto design etc. http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif The light source will mainly be from above, but depending on where I go with it, I might want to throw in some ambient shades of blue and red. We'll see. But yeah, this is basically the gist of it. In other words, it's gonna rock.

I refuse to give up on this piece :) Here's the latest progress:

http://willdrawforfood.com/BatmanFirstNightOutTease5.jpg

(might show up a tad dark on some screens)

Yeah, right now, it's just a simple picture of a younger Bruce Wayne. I was thinking of jazzing it up with a background and some ambient lighting coming from above and below. But anyway, crits welcome on what I have so far...thanks!

WOW thats insanely good.

Thats some tight rendering dude

Even though the light source from above is pretty intense, and would bleed into the shadows, I would say that a little more light would be blocked on his face.

And unless he has some light absorbing gloves on there would be a bit more light on them.

Other than that- its awesome.

and im glad you have finally decided to step away from it. Sometimes you just need to move on and start something else...

What up Hype,

It's been a looong time since I posted anything artsy here on these boards and I figured it was time to shed some public light on what I've been working on as of late.

I've been getting into 3D modeling and animation in a big way, hoping to become skilled enough to turn it into my profession. I submit for your viewing pleasure the fruits of my recent labors: Joker

Right now I'm using a program called Modo by Luxology. I'm discovering though that 3d graphics requires an awareness of a lot of different programs depending on what you want to create. Some programs are better suited for certain things over others, and everyone utilizes more then one. After I'm finished with this guy, I'm going to import him into another program called Zbrush to work on details.

http://willdrawforfood.com/Misc/HairProgress8.jpg

I'm trying to get the look of his hair right and I can't decide of I want to go with a few thinner greasy strands or the fallen locks concept I have here. Maybe you guys can help tip the balance.

About the hair...I decided to go with a "Mike Patton" very slicked back look. If you saw the entire head then you'd see that it works. I do agree though that a few loose strands here and there would add a certain something. I'm still making adjustments to the sculpt as I go, we'll see.

Just wait until you see this dude colored and rendered...I was testing out some preliminary color designs and it even caught me off gaurd and I'm making the freakin thing.

You can make a turntable video of whatever you create in zbrush, but its strictly a 2.5D painting program. You can get a ton of info about the app on the web and at zbrushcentral.com

A good friend of mine in LA who has been schooling me in the fine art of 3D graphics was kind enough to show my progress to a studio in NYC and they immediately offered me an internship with the goal of taking me on as a full time artist at the end of 3 months!!!!!!!! Which means officially, if all goes well.... the moniker of StarvingArtist will become an ironic statement as opposed to a cynical truth.
