American Idol - Season 5

American Idol was kicked off here in America yesterday, with a two hour long season premiere, and another episode coming on tonight. What were your thoughts on the auditions? Did anybody stand out to you yet?

I personally liked the very first girl they showed. She sang to Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone, and the rocker who has yet to be named. :)

I liked this show when it started because it wasn't a "cultural phenomenon". Now I despise it.

Man, did anyone see the ditsy 16-year-old girl with the deep orange tan? And then her mom came in...wow that was damn near frightening; that girl might give Paris Hilton a run for her money. No way that girl is from Chicago.

I also liked when the girl from Peotone who was pissed off at everybody after her audition and kept telling everyone to kiss her ass.

I'm always tempted to watch the first few episodes to see Simon destroy all the talentless "singers" images of themselves, they've been coddled all their lives and finally someone tells them the truth and it crushes them, but then I remember if I did that, I'd be helping the show stay on the air, so instead I watched some good TV like Scrubs, Supernatural and The Shield.

The auditions are always the best part of the show. I liked the twins: Joshua and Jarrett. They sing very well.

I was very suprised too by that. It was like a Paris Hilton clone. Besides she didn't her a thing of what the judges asked her. Simon kept asking her about the sun tan and ParisClone just kept saying her name and the song she was to perform.

I'm still trying to figure everyone's fascination for this guy. I keep thinking the sound must be going on my system when he sings. He sounds absolutely terrible to me. I really didn't appreciate the way he butchered(IMO) my favorite Doobies song this week. Sounded like Joe Cocker, but when he sings a Joe Cocker tune, he sounds nothing like him. I usually like the blue-eyed r&b soul type of vocalist. He just does nothing for me, but everyone else loves him.

Chris is the only one this season that I like. Granted, his arrangement was the best last night, which helped, but even without it I think he would have edged out the others.

As for the rest... sorry I don't remember all of their names (nor do I really care) but of those I can remember... Bucky and that other guy with the really bad teeth are mediocre singers at best and look like they should both be working at a gas station in Louisiana or somewhere. Ace is alright but he gives me bad flashbacks of Constantine. Mandisa is overrated, Katherine is hot but kind of a so-so performer, the old-looking guy has all the appeal of a Wayne Newton Vegas show, and that Chicken Little kid merits the biggest curb-stomp in the world every time he takes the f**king stage. The rest of them I can barely even remember.

Ace and Lisa weren't in the bottom and Melissa sucked she screwed up the song the other night. My top 3 Lisa, Ace, and Taylor Hicks.

My top three are:
1. Chris-my pick to be the AI winner. He brings it everytime. Almost every performance looks and sounds like a concert.
2. Mandisa-Runner up. Great smile, energy. She also brings it everytime. But her plus size will keep her out of the winner's column.
3. Paris-Has a good voice, but her personality, confidence, and presence really belie her years. I can easily see her making records and videos.

The rest:
4. Lisa-Her low score might be the wake up call for her. She has a great voice-perhaps better than Paris, and a very marketable look. But she is too rigid, too perfect-similar to Ayla. She has to find a way to let her hair down, sing youthful, fun songs. She didn't come off sincere singing the Stevie Wonder tune the other night. Once she hits the right balance, finding songs that fit her and connect with audience she will be dangerous.
5. Taylor-He has such exuberance and he kills the more soulful, bluesy type songs. He finally came alive last week and continued doing his thing this week.
6. Elliot-He has a nice voice, good vocal control. But he doesn't have the "right" look. I don't see him making videos, being on magazine covers. I can see him doing back up work, or putting out more Adult Contemporary/Jazz type albums.
7. Katherine-She has a good voice, but I think Mandisa, Paris, and Lisa are all better. What carries her is her great personality and her looks. She needs to stick to songs that really show her bubbly, magnetic personality.
8. Ace-His niche is definitely ballads. He needs to stick with them so he can stare into the camera at all times and hypnotize people, especially the ladies, with his Doomgaze.
9. Bucky-Bucky has an okay voice. I don't see him making it to the final 4, but I think he will cut a record or two. He knows who he is and what he likes. And his cover of "Superstition" was better than I thought it would be.
10. Kellie-Not the strongest voice, but her Ellie May, country bumpkin personality is appealing. She did disappear in the Stevie song she did the other night. She needs to stick to more upbeat stuff, or something that can allow her to keep a rough edge to her voice.
11. Kevin-His Stevie cover was his best performance, but this guy shouldn't have made it this far and even he knows it. I think he has a sympathy vote and some Simon backlash working for him. His voice has limited range and he can't sing anything outside of Josh Groban.

FYI,
I like all types of music, but R & B best. Particularly the R & B of the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s. I also like the hip hop of that period as well.

And Ruben has an "old school" vibe that would fit in with that era.

So far this season, I like Chris and Katherine. I'd be fine if either of them won, because they're both talented performers. Chris can do the rock thing very well, and Katherine is a good jazz singer (plus she's HOT AS HELL). As for the others...

Pickler is growing on me... I love that old Patsy Cline song and she did a good job with it.
Bucky is the epitome of every drunk redneck I've ever seen at a karaoke bar trying to belt out "Enter Sandman" five minutes before last call.
Kevin is pretty much a caucasian William Hung with a slightly better voice and I'm glad to be rid of him.
Paris is a bore, plus she should be voted off simply because people named "Paris" have been pissing off the general public since the Trojan War.

^^^ I agree with you pretty much on all except Taylor Hicks and let me explain my 2 reasons, 1) the guy can sing wether you like him or not, you can't take that away, and 2) he really loves music and performing, something sorely missed with alot of entertainers today. BTW you forgot prettyboy Ace, which I don't think will make top three, but my wife disagrees and the kid with the funny teeth, who also is a pretty good singer.

My two cents after 50's night:

-I think Paris has a good voice and a commanding stage presence for someone 17 years old. When she performs she just looks so comfortable on stage, like she's been doing it all her life. I think her rendition of "Fever" was one of her best performances. And the best of 50's night.

-Lisa also has a great voice, a very marketable look. But she has problems singing more upbeat songs. I see her in the mold of an Anita Baker or Whitney Houston. The only problem with that is she's too young at the moment to pull that off successfully. If she could find a way to do songs-mixing the old and new- like Monica she might be more successful. I think she's really had problems picking the right songs.

-Katherine also sings well. She's fine too. But I like it better when she sings more upbeat songs, it really lets her personality come through. And if she wants to win its going to be on her personality. Because just she can't outbelt Mandisa, Lisa, or Paris in my opinion. I see her making it to the top five, but not the not top three.

-Eliot. He has a nice voice, but he doesn't have the look or style that will get him to the winner's column. I don't see this guy on magazine covers, videos, etc. Doing backup, yeah, but headlining? Nah.

-Taylor. He can sing, and brings tremendous energy to his performances. He has an infectious joy, but he also has problems with his song selection. I think when he embraced his inner Michael McDonald for "Taking it to the Streets" that it was his best performance. He's a wildcard, but I don't think he will make it to the top three.

-Ace. As long as he sticks to slow songs, so he can use his falsetto and stare into the camera he should be all right. Going back to ballads last week was a good move for him.

-Kellie. Her personality is her selling card. Plus, she's been fairly good at song selection, except for that Stevie song. She has the weakest voice among the remaining contestants, but she is just so cute and likable. However, her hick schtick is starting to wear on me. I'm from NC, and she's making us North Carolinians look so bad. It's like watching the Beverly Hillbillies.

-Bucky. Has a gruff voice that isn't easily adaptable to various genres. However, he has done better with Stevie and 50s night than I anticipated. However, I think his time might be up next week.

-Mandisa. She brings it every time. Though I haven't been as impressed with her last two performances, she still has the powerful voice, the big, beautiful smile, and cheerful personality, and she is my pick for runner up.

-Chris. Didn't like his rendition of "I Walk the Line." But that doesn't matter, because he brings it every time as well. And overall, I think his performances have been better, more visceral than the rest. It's true that Chris's performances sound like stuff on the radio now. He's my pick to win the thing. But I think that is the general consensus with most watchers. I hope Chris keeps doing his thing and doesn't feel he has the thing sewn up, even though both he and Mandisa seem to be a few paces ahead of everyone else.

I think Mandisa's problem is she turns in powerhouse performances all the time, and people get used to that and somewhat bored with it. She might turn into a victim of her own success.

Also, Mandisa needs to go back to singing more upbeat songs. She's been doing slow songs for the last two weeks. She needs to rev the crowd back up.

I'll give you that Taylor can sing, but he's an average singer at best. That's the problem with American Idol. They tend to stack the final 12 with such mediocre performers that whenever someone comes along who can actually STAY IN TUNE, they treat him or her like God's gift to music. I mean, I've known people who have tried out for AI and didn't even make it past the PRELIMINARY audition (yes, for those of you who don't know, there are auditions that occur before the ones you see on TV) and they are leaps and bounds beyond the majority of people you see in the finals. And I'm not just saying this because some of them were friends of mine, I'm speaking from experience because I have performed with them. But at the preliminaries, they size you up and determine if they think they can either "sell" you to the public, or just flat out humiliate you (hence all of the "William Hungs" that make it past those auditions). Talent is hardly a factor.

Everybody else was so-so to me. In fact, I thought the entire line up tonight didn't do much for me.

I thought Lisa did much better tonight than the last two weeks, but she took a risk with the Kelly Clarkson song, and she should've stuck to something a little more safe since she has been in a precarious position lately.

Bucky did well all right in the performance department, but his vocal was okay, nothing worth keeping him in the competition much longer.

As far as I am concerned Chris wasn't amazing either, he picked an easy little bs song by Creed. Lisa blew, she seems to get weaker every time. Bucky sounded better than he has in a while, although that aint sayin much. Mandisa did her usual, I'm fat so I belt it all out. Taylor was pretty good, definitely liked the song. Ace was *vomits*, that sums it up. Kelli was weak. Elliott was forgettable as usual which may help to keep him on the show. Katharine, had a weak beginning and a few moments, but finished well (it's damn hard to sound even close to as good as Christina, so props to her for doin so well).

This week's victim: Lisa

Just vote her off already, otherwise she may end up collapsing on stage next week. She seems to have the least stamina than anyone else when it comes to the constant strain of the show.

I don't know if anyone else saw this, but the other night on cable there was an interview with Simon where he said that he predicted Taylor would win, but that his personal favorite was Chris.
