I'm in the process of making molds for the belt and chest emblem for the returns suit if i get good enough results i'll pop a few on ebay..

i made my suit entirely EXCEPT for the emblem and belt, which i obtained from a very talented friend of mine. I know it's not 100% accurate, but i like it like this...

The only thing still left to do is attach the emblem to the suit, and get a haircut. I'll also add that i'm not taking requests for suits like this. I do this for my own collection.

What kind of material did you use for the body suit? Well, what kind did you use for all the pieces? It all looks great. And can you PM me contact info for the people that did the molds for you? I must have a good Superman costume by Halloween this year.

Christ, that's a brilliant Wonder Woman costume - fairly close to the approach I'd like to see the movie take, though not quite. I don't like the big W accross the waist particularly, I'd prefer a traditional, more slender belt and a gap between the belt and chest-eagle.
I suggest talking to her if you want a kick @$$ custom suit.
Uh, Kelly's actually a guy :)
Orlando Spider - the design of your Superman costume is awesome. The colours and the whole "cut" of it is great - the sizes, shapes and arrangement of the various elements - is much better than the real Returns one, much more faithful, even though the changes themselves are slight, they are significant. If that costume was made with the same level of quality as the actual Returns suit it would look absolutely fantastic (this is not a slight against you at all - just acknowledging that a Hollywood feature film's costume is made to a higher standard). I prefer the longer cape of the Returns suit, but apart from that all your design choices are superior - the collar is a vast improvement.
Is the cape able to drape over your shoulder a bit, the way Frank Quitely draws it in All Star Superman?

Nice codpiece. Did you make the boots yourself too? They're better than the movie ones. And for the costume, is it spandex or another material?
lujho
02-18-2006, 02:04 PM
I could be mistaken but it doesn't look like lycra/spandex to me. That's the problem with all "spandex" suits... actual Spandex itself sucks, it's an unattractive looking material which no superhero costume should ever be made of. It's just got a horrible sheen.
But if you make a "tights" based costume out of another, high-quality material it can look great. Orlando's costume doesn't look as great as the real Returns or F4 or Spidey suits as far as what it's made of, but it's way better than Dean Cain's shiny lycra.
Most of those KMD costumes suffer from being made of spandex, even though they're incredibly well made. If they were made of another material thay'd look a great deal better. Alex Ross' art suffers from the same thing - most of his heroes actually look like they're wearing cheap lycra, when he could be painting them to have any nice-looking finish he likes.

Hey guys, thanks for the kind comments on my suit.
Concerning the Belt and Emblem, to those who have shown interest:
Although I did not make them, the artist that DID has only done these two items, and these two only. Since these were molded he has begun work on a new version of the emblem and belt (as new reference has surfaced since then) and probably will not have any readily available until closer to the premier. As it stands, my belt and emblem are 1 of a kind.
Concerning the body suit material, All materials are lycra (aka, spandex) based materials (cape included). What i do not understand, is that MOST spandex fabrics have two sides, a solid side, and then a rather shiney side... and for some reason, most costumes are made with the shiney side and end up looking like crud, whereas the solid/flat side looks better. I always make my suits with the flat side. So to answer the question, yes it IS a lycra/ spandex blend, but it's just incorporated in a better way.
Concerning the boots:
I got them off of a generic shoe website, they are imported and very cheap... however with some modification and vinyl/ leather spraypaint, (as well as in my case, switching out the soles) you get a good looking/ comfortable/ and durable boot.
And concerning the Codpiece comment...
What Cod piece?

Well I wish more people would do what you do then. Looks so much better than the shiny side.

I think it might have something to do with the perception that it looks more like the comics Where you have black shading and super shiney highlitesand accents muscle mass.. Although it looks fine on a comic, it translates Horribly into real life (via lycras anyway..... PVC does a good job of looking similar.... however only on costumes that are meant to be made from pvc... like catwoman, venom, etc.)Also having a solid physic similar to the character also adds greatly.

Pleather too.... actually. definetly not breathable

The spandex shouldn`t hold the cape. Use your arms to do it. Like what Dean Cain used to do in Lois & Clark.
Orlando Spider
02-28-2006, 08:23 PM
huh? You mean the cape shouldn't be attached directly to the necktop? It is with mine.... and i like it that way. BTW, Dean Cain's suit is gay. Dean Cain is also gay.
SuperDaniel
03-01-2006, 03:02 PM
I`m saying that the spandex doesn`t hold heavier materials like leather or etc, so you can attach the cape to your shoulder and then put the spandex over it. That`s how it was done with the Dean Cain costume, wich had the best cape of them all.

The cape was done by K.M.D. theatrics
the belt and buckle were from tandy leather and I plasi-dipped them yellow
and the shield I designed myself based on concept art from Superman:lives

Yes, Kelly (KMD Theatrics) does some FREAKIN FANTASTIC work. I'm sure he can do whatever you want. I am also able to help if you have something special. Just give me an email at jherman312@hotmail.com. I've made several differnt styles of Superman costumes. The George Reeve (1950s), Christopher Reeve (1970s), Dean Cain (1980s) and I'm working on the new movie version of the costume. I've even made custom orders/styles. And I can help with other kinds of spandex based costumes.

I don't understand. If you mean was the suit complete? No that was just a work in progress for a customer. I eventually finished the rest of the costume with the wings, ears cut out, lower tights with briefs and belt and boots. Oh, and the gloves. I just don't have any pics for that costume finished. LOL I just wanted to show some of the variety of work that I've done.

will be making the briefs out of the same material, belt i have to find something to make that, but the s sheild is a mold from a superman returns toy, and i used a sewing glue, to apply it to the lycra

How (or where) do you guys get these full spandex suits or whatever? I'd like to try to make a Batman suit sometime soon. I know where to find the "extra bits" here and there, but no idea where I could get a full suit like the Chris Reeve superman suit.
looks right to me.

It says it's screen accurate but it's not. I e-mailed the guy for a close up picture and compared it to the original. There is a great pic of the original on the board in the Toy's R Us prop and toy display thread. There are fewer of the little "s'' and the color is way off.

It's nowhere near 12 inches. The screen one is 9 inches at the most, but maybe smaller. He says it's cast from an original, that's complete bull. It's not even close.

Hi guys, watched the superman film on saturday afternoon i think that thesuit is made from thin neoprene like they make triathlon suits from. I also think that the cape is made from rubber when he's in the rain and lycra at other times! The suit lookstoo thick to be made from lycra and makes everything look smooth like neoprene does!

Here is the first version of my Superman Returns suit with the walking cape. The flash from the camera makes the suit alot brighter in color than it actually is, i took the 2nd pic with the flash off. The second version of the suit has the much fuller flying cape, screen accurate belt, super shiney S symbol & the body lines in the suit. I posted some pics of the cape & belt from V2, i will post more when its complete. I offer the most accurate SR suits on the market right now so if you are interested email me at sircomvent@hotmail.com Both versions are availible.

that is absolute BS man. If you are recasting a piece and the person who sculpted it tells or asks you to stop, you damn well better. In the prop and costume world recasters are frowned uppon, especially people who do it and think its right to make money off of other peoples sweat. Yes this is america and we are free to do things, but we draw thae damn line at taking credit for someone elses work. Just because you payed for a belt doesnt mean you have the right to re-cast it and make money off of it. You would do well not to make enemy's in the prop and costume field. Some of us here go pretty high up in this game, and you dont want to have a bad name amongst us pal. Although, I think we are past that now with your blatant direspect for the prop makers who made you money.

you know, as one of these kind of people myself (star wars costumes) when we sell items made off of movies we are really illegally copying DC Comics.
so who really can point fingers?
true, its more of an ethical matter then a legal one. I mean I understand JBrown's frustration. On the other hand costumedfreak DID have to make a mold of the belt, than pour the latex, make sure there's no bubble, get the color right...there is work involved in all of that. Therefore the money he earns is not completely unjustified...To me its not so much what he's doing but how he's doing it that's wrong: one should never denie his source material. Its like in manips. You can use someone else's, but mention where you got it. It's respect.
JBrown437
09-30-2006, 12:20 PM
I can see both of your points and I agree about the legality issue. But I don't condone recasting at all because it is taking the easy way out. Making a mold and pouring latex/urethane takes no where near as much craft as making the initial sculpt.
SuperIabou
10-01-2006, 01:12 AM

Hmm let me put it this way.
If you as a fan of Superman did a Painting, a nice beautiful canvas painting and posted pictures
of it on the boards and got some good responces about it, even people asking for a copy. These
people are your friends so you give them copies at the cost of material and shipping.
A short time later you find that your painting is being sold by another person, who you dont recall
selling it to and they are claiming it as their very own work. Would you be ok with that cause hey,
thats the game. No, no one in their right mind would be ok with that. Especially if the original artist
contacted them stating, "sorry but that is my work and I would appreciate it if youdidnt take credit for it",
only to have that person spit in your face and say screw off more or less. That is disrespectfull.
I work in the costume world as well and I have had to shut people down for taking credit for my work,
this is no different. Disrespect and lying cannot and should not be tolerated.

I dont know how to stop it, I dont think it is very ethical of them.
but your best bet is to email them to sort out the problem.
although I havent been keepign up with the problem, but is=t sounded like the person who bought them didnt know they were a copy, so I cant say its his fault.
of course who knows who is telling the truth. I would just sort it all out person to person.

Ok guys this is sad. I'm a new member I was just searching for the Superman return suit online because im a huge fan, but obviously there is no Superman that holds the presence that Chirstopher Reeve did or even George Reeve. That is all beside the point. What is sad though, is this argument about somone "stealing" someone elses work. It is horrible somone can just buy something and resell it as there own on any market, but anyone with even a small education knows that if you make something and you want to be the only one benefiting from your products profits......you have to get a patent. If you don't, you have no right to the product...and the fact that your making these suits without Warner Brother's permission or DC comics, means you have no right to complain. So please stop arguing, you should only being making these suits because you want to be part of something that was and is always going to be great....and thats Superman.

TimDrakeRobin45
12-06-2006, 12:28 AM
we are not arguing over the fact that the rights to the belt are owned by Jon ar anyone who is recast, but that in the costume replica world there is a code of conduct that we all follow. We all work hard and make pieces for ourselves. Occasionally someone askes if one can be made for them, wether or not that person descides to make the piece for someone else is up to them. This fellow costumedfreak has been asking for "help" on his personal projects from many different costume replicators. He has gotten alot of help. He has turned around and screwed every one of these people. Jon taught him how to make the Returns cape, Another member gave him some neat batman items under the condition that he was not to re-sell them, he not only sold them, but made molds first so he could make and sell more copies.
Is it just me that feels it is wrong to Stab someone in the back after they bent over backwards to help you? He doesn't only recast board members things.
This is the argument. I am not saying we have rights to these items, I am just saying we all have the right to comman curtesy and respect amung our peers, which he has shown many times that he doesnt care about anyone but himself. You being new might not have known this.
Say you are in a Ceramics class. You spend 2 weeks on a sculpter of your favorite comic bookcharacter for your class. You come into class one day to find that your project is being turned in by another class mate. You know its yours and this classmate knows its yours but no one else knows or even cares that it's yours and there is really nothing you can do but ***** about it. Someone else taking credit for your work is upsetting reguarldess of wether or not you own the property that you have used as inspration for your artistic ability's. To see someone else taking credit for your art is disheartening at the very least and if I see it happening I will not stand idley by and let it. I will do whatever I can to bring a Fraud to light.

I don't recomend a superman returns suit from javierschool on ebay. i just got one. the boots, belt, and emblem are very high quality. the body suit is very cheap and not durable. they give full-cut trunks and skimpy ones. i couldn't fit into the full-cut ones so i can only wear the skimpy ones. pluse the zipper in the back of the bodysuit doesn't go down far enough making it extremely difficult to put on.
the zentai spandex suits are actually better except they don't have soles on the feet.

Hey All.
I just finished my Legion of Superheroes Superboy costume. It's an emalgum of a few versions of Superman and Superboy. The cape emblem and boots are Superman Returns influenced. The boots have yet to be painted red by the way. The suits colors and black belt are Kindome Come and Fleischer inspired. The Legion Buckle and Ring are just that. So this is my Legion Superboy costume!

javierschool does an excellent belt. the embelem is good too and the boots aren't too shabby either. The main problem is the cheap body suit. Pretty flimsy, plus like i said, the zipper doesn't go down far enough making it almost impossible to get on over my shoulders without ripping it.

TimDrakeRobin45
01-04-2007, 02:07 PM
I had a zentai suit before, I really did not like it at all. I gave it to a friend of mine. They use cheaper materials and the emblems are always positioned innacuratly and stretched like crazy once they are on. The capes are also usually cheap thin materials. I hate that they have sewn on booties as well. I prefer to make suits from scratch, that way you get exactly what you want. Sure it costs more, but in the end its worth it to have eaxactly what you want.
pwl4life

TimDrakeRobin45
01-09-2007, 01:13 PM
Jon custom sculpted his emblem and his belt himself. His belt is widley considdered to be the most screen accurate one out there. I beleive after he sculpted them he made silicone molds. The pieces are made of urethane. If im wrong aon any points Jon step in when you can.
Interesting tid bit the Dean Cain suit, was made from about $250 worth of materials. It was made by a Dance studio, not a prop shop.

I also like to wear my suits to conventions, I am very proud of my work.
I have done a few appearances for Marvel and DC and gotten paid pretty well. I wont touch birthday parties or anything like that as the corprate people at Marvel and DC tend to frown upon that, especially when I am trying to get in good with them.

Travis- I'll be honest, lol, I havent done anything remotely productive in my suit...just being a geek.
Yea its amazing what kind of money goes into the actual movie suits. To get something that is the same quality as that would intail spending unrealistic amounts of money. It all depends just how important having such a suit is to you. If you want to spend un-godly amounts of money, then more power to you. I have yet to see anything as close to what you're asking as of yet though. I've seen over-priced knock offs, but nothing worth shelling out the cash for, especially when similar results can be achieved on your own for less money and a little hard work.

Well it was the fact that I am going for a Legion Of Superheroes Superboy, and also that I am not so much a fan of the S belt idea. It looks kool, but it doesnt belong to Superboy.
The Superboy Im doing is a mix of my favorite design aspects from costumes over the years. The boots, two tone cape and Emblem are Returns inspired, The colors are Animated series inspired, and the belt is Fleischer and KC inspired. The legion Buckle and Ring complete it and are a nice little touch that I love.

I agree and I dont agree. Just because materials are not super expensive does not mean a suit is cheaply made. Cheaply made reffers to shotty craftsmenship. There is no shotty craftsmenship in any of our suits. Only the best materials were used in the making of Jons & mine. I used 4 way stretch cotton lycra, Sueded Satin, Leather and Rubber. Just because I know how to put those materials together without breaking tha bank does not make it cheaply made. The only thing on my suit that is cheaply made is the place holder cape to give me an idea of where the cape will need to fall.

Hello all,
I am new to the boards. Just recently found it and have been looking around for a while.
I finally found the thread I have been looking for concerning the sr suit.
This thread has provided me alot of insight on the costume as I am going
to start making my own (by the way, great suits to all that have made their own).
I now have sources as to where I might have my boots done, get the
insignia and/or belt ( if I don't decide to experiment with latex, haven't done that before). The body suit and shorts are easy to do. The only thing I am waiting for is to find a supplier that sells the milliskin with the
diamond pattern on it. I have already found several sites that have the
royal blue milliskin material, they just don't have the diamonds on them.
Although, after reading this thread, I will more than likely but the fabric
and have the diamonds screened on. But if I go that route, I will buy
enough fabric so I have extra just in case I want to make a second suit
or make an authentic sr "top half" t-shirt:cwink: .oOnOn
On a personal note though, I don't like the zentai suits. They are WAY TOO SHINY for my tastes.
So as I get my materials and start making the costume, I will post pics
and keep you updated on my progress.
Thanks to all for the great discussion/ideas and resources.

Cape briefs and bodysuit from Ricky from ebay?
boots look nice too!
Streeter1981
02-15-2007, 03:27 PM
Yeah TimDrake you got it exactly! Bronze Armory stuff really gives the suit a "theatrical" look which I really like.
The cape, briefs, and bodysuit are by Ricky from eBay. They fit well and the cape looks great, but were really cheaply done and I had to do a LOT of upgrades to them as far as durability is concerned. His boots were terrible though ... made out of $8 Wal-Mart rubber boots and tape.
So I upgraded to some from another guy on eBay. I had to return the first ones he sent and get him to make another pair that was a specific color to match the actual red/burgundy I wanted. So there ya go. It cost $1000+ altogether, plus extra effort.

Hey Streeter, do you have any closeup shots of your chest "S"? I'm thinking about snagging one of those exact BA emblems, but would like to see a closeup before doing so. Their pics are too shiney to show detail, and I think the lighting in yours would show me well enough if they were larger closeup shots.

Their emblems are nice, a little large for most people, but then again most people wanted the larger S in the movie anyway.

Yeah man, check it out. This is the best I could do with my camera, but the symbol is pretty cool. It's big though, and if that's not what you want then don't go with this one. But the one in SR is way too small for me, so... The emblem has the little 's's that everyone wants, and the 3D look; but there were a couple little flaws in the emblem (nothing that couldn't be fixed or was too noticeable). And shipping from BA was fast!

Actually i think that the BA emblem is movie accurate in size, it's just that Brandon has such a large frame that it looks smaller. It fits most us normal sized folks the way most wanted it to fit in the film.
I love clark/Supes costumes. Well done.

I still don't get why so many of you only try to make exact replicas of the movie costume, instead of making an original take on it. We haven't seen a sculpted Superman costume yet, have we?

I'm not a very creative person, that's why!! Ha well that and I actually really liked the way the new costume looks so I wanted one for myself! I thought the C. Reeve costume was boring, while the new one has a more theatrical look that I like. And the boots are cool by themselves!!

I did an original take on superboy, and yea there has been a sculpted suit made for superman. Looks kool, but its not my cup o tea. Im not a fan of latex suits in general.

Thanks for the pics Streeter... I went with the BA from that.
Blueberry - Mine with be an original take on the costume, although with quite a bit of the SR influences. I think all the sculpted/fake muscle suits look like ass, the only sculpting I'll be doing is getting myself back in decent shape. :)

Greetings. Great suits! I am about ready to make my own. Just have a few questions...the emblem should I get the SR version? (which will probly best suit me as I'm 5'4" 165 #)

What would be the best way to attach it to my suit? Which is nylon/lycra.
I have a few ideas to make the suit my own. Changing some colors around. My cape will be tricky. I've got a certain look I want to achive with it.http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:_K4w9SIpJvrLiM:http://www.ai.mit.edu/lab/olympics/99/cover/superman.gif (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ai.mit.edu/lab/olympics/99/cover/superman.gif&imgrefurl=http://wisbenbae.blogspot.com/&h=1798&w=1250&sz=651&hl=en&sig2=R3SllWHqQ1Q4d6kAewUiPg&start=1&tbnid=_K4w9SIpJvrLiM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=104&ei=Ja7gRYjwFIKuhATiyv2wBw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsuperman%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl% 3Den%26sa%3DG)
Kinda like this with the fullness...where it can fall down in front of me (kind of like Batman's) but also able to push it back and hang behind me.
Got some ideas in my head...will have to play around and see what works. If only I had a dummie to use...guess my room mate will have to do =)

Rage - since you're a Spiderman-sized fellow you may want to go with the Costumebay.com shield... it's 9" wide or so compared with BA 11" shield. Or even the $10 shield and cape sets like this
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?cpncode=10-36699702-2&dest=9999999997&product_id=4661244&sourceid=1500000000000002375470&srccode=cii_9686437
I think that one is about 7" wide...worth the $10 just to get the shield sizing for your costume anyway.

Thanks very much Spamtron =)
That size should be perfect. I was at Walmart the other day and found this iron on kind of adhesive I'm going to use to attach the emblem to the cape.
Also found some glues. Super glue, something called goop (if I remember correctly) this might be what I use for the chest shield.
As for the cape...I really like how Dean Cain's was seperate. I have a few ideas for that. For the actual cape itself...I have yet to get the fabric for. Definately I want something seamless and rather long (maybe mid calf). Again, once I get the fabric I will play around and see what works / what looks good before I start sewing.
As for the trunks I will be going with something like this.

well the Bronze Armory for the last two months now was supposed to debut their Superman Returns, boots briefs and cape and have yet to do so.
Having no Idea when they would finally release them I made my own "In the style of" boots, that have a sneaker like sole, the same V cut and the same shade of darker burgandy red for my Legion Superboy costume. I also am working on another pair for a friend right now that are more Returns like, being that they have the "S" on the heel and the textured flap in the front.

well then I would suggest finding a pair of boots you like in black and then painting them with Meltonian NuLife spray dye Burgandy as a base and then mist Bright Red over that until you get the shade needed.

Tim...thanks very much for the helpful info. I haven't really found what I want. I think I need to take a trip to the mall...ugh I hate the mall. If I cant find anything at the mall I might just but some at a costume website and paint them to match. The boots and belt are the last things I need, and to attach sheild to suit. So far I've only spent about $100...
Dam I can't wait to be finished so I can run around in it =^)

Hola people =^)
I found some boots I liked...they're not totally Superman-ish...but I like them and they fit with the look I want (plus they are comfortable). Finally found a paint that would work. Didn't come out alittle darker then I wanted so going to go buy a lighter shade and redo them. I played around with my \S/ shield too much so now I need another one plus tweek the cape alittle so to hide the shoulder strap. All in all I think it looks great. My room mate took some pics so I could see what it looks like. Should have some photos to shaare soon.
peace =^)

Made a whole bunch of superman returns shields, and just started selling them. Long descriptions in the links below, but in short, they're as accurate as I could get them, while keeping them flexible and the right size.
I'm very happy with the end result though, being a perfectionist.
Unfortunately I'm -NOT- allowed to post my ebay links here as hype frowns on self advertising, however I can show you the picture/description pages i made for them regardless.
