If a movie has a twist in the last five minutes that completely makes you rethink what you thought about the rest of the movie, it can certainly screw it up. I can think of one movie that did that for me.
This movie really didnt have that though.

Well, it sort of did, but not exactly, no. I'm just proposing a scenario in which the last five minutes can kill a movie for me.

I feel like I could definitely see it again...sign of a great film to me personally. I would really love to watch it with my mom shes squeamish as hell. :) And 20 million is not bad at all for a horror movie opening weekend. In the long run it will make a nice profit and I definitely think it will be make a nice chunk on dvd.
Johnny Drama

Yeah, it did very well. For it to have done better than it has would be a tad far fetched considering it has so far only been released in the US and it is a horror movie with an "R" rating.

It takes a lot for me to wanna watch a movie twice or more. I'll def buy SH but I won't be watching it for a few years. That's how i do with a lot of movies; I watched Constantine for the first time in forever and I loved it all over again.

You'd be the wrong person to ask, since it appears you're trying to change peoples view on the movie, especially those who really enjoyed it and appreciated it for what it was.
So to be honest, your recommendation means as much as Shaq on a free throw line.
By the way, Goodnight and Good Luck is not as good as Silent Hill in my opinion. Considering that you enjoyed that, I'd say your credibility is a bit shot.

I've said (about 1,000 times) that I loved the movie from a visual standpoint. The costumes, makeup effects, VFX, cinematography, and sets were amazing for me. I hate M. Night Shyamalan. The Sixth Sense had nothing going for it except its ending, and once you know that, it just flat-out had nothing. Unbreakable was directed like it was a horror movie despite the fact that he claimed it was a "real-life comic-book superhero film." It was sure disturbing as hell for a superhero film. And Signs? Man, Signs had nothing going for it at all. Three strikes and you're out. I didn't even bother with The Village.
Regarding Silent Hill, though... I know you guys have posted the Penny Arcade comics, but did you read Tycho's review that goes with it?
It's very, very mean. I very much disagree with him, but I'm going to share it anyway.
You might have seen people say that this was a good movie, or a faithful representation of the game, and I would urge you to disregard anything those people say in the future about movies or, indeed, any other subject. Silent Hill: The Movie evokes the games without accurately expressing them - to the extent that the movie succeeds at all, it is because director Christophe Gans has mastered the series' visual lexicon. It was weighed down by a faulty script, a terrible kind of smudge across the sheet, but brilliantly directed. It is in this way that it most closely mirrors electronic gaming in a general sense, though (ironically) not Silent Hill, in that it is the sterling execution of a poor narrative.
It's alright if a person wants to enjoy it, so long as they do not lie to themselves and others about the film in aggregate. One can exert their will and emerge from the film with whatever nutrients exist in that barren place. In the same way that a telescope cannot be made to examine itself, I believe that writing in a way can't be used to examine the dialogue of this movie. There is something foul about language after what this writer has done with it. Roger Avary, who PR flacks were quick to establish as one of our own, should go to prison. Not forever now, just for a couple hours, so that he can feel what it was like to languish in that dark theater.
The story for the first Silent Hill is what I would call "complex." It is not ready-made for the mass market. It is ambiguous in some ways. In short, it is the sort of story that a person like Roger Ebert might assume doesn't exist anywhere in gaming. This movie won't change his mind, because much of the subtlety and perhaps even the core ideas have either been stripped out or "seasoned" to appeal to the idiots they imagine will watch this thing. I say "idiots, etc." because this is a movie that feels the need to repeat two and three times what is really the most basic Goddamn information. There is no trust whatsoever in the viewing audience, which is to say you, aside from he absolute assurance that you will be snared by the carefully created mythology that this is "the faithful videogame translation."
The concepts communicated by the second game are far more digestible, and would require no idiot scribe to chew every detail to a paste and then spit it in my mouth. If Silent Hill must, must be a Box Office Entity, there are ways to manage it that do less violence to what it represents.
I can only hope that the PA fans won't be blinded by this review.

Huh, that's funny. I remember it getting a very warm reception right here on this very site when it came out last year. And people were especially impressed with how true Keanu was to the character in spite of the fact that it was moved to LA and changed to an American tale for no reason other than budget.

I've been told that there's actually an "extremist christian cult" in the Silent Hill game universe, called "The Order," which did indeed burn witches throughout the town's history and at some point separated into both the extreme christian sect and the samael-worshipping sect. If this is true, I must admit I'm a lot less bothered by the film's third and final act.

You know, I've been wondering if maybe the ending is a potential set-up for a much-altered translation of Silent Hill 2...
Perhaps the sequel film will start with Christopher getting a mysterious letter from Rose, telling him to meet her in Silent Hill... much like James.
Of course, the ultimate twist regarding James and Mary couldn't be preserved if that was the case.
Either way, it does seem like doing ANY kind of translation of Silent Hill 3 is pretty much impossible with how this one ends, unless something happens to change Sharon/Alessa's nature in the third one. She seems to end this movie in a very creepy, wacked-out state.

There are only 2 things that bother me. The ending, simply because I don't understand it. And when Cybil let herself get beat up all of a sudden. She was kicken ass seconds before and then when she shows them that she doesn't have any ammo left she didn't even try to put up a fight.

I think the thing with Cybil is basically a case where she was beating up on their asses when they were attacking both her AND Rose, but when they all teamed up on just her, she got pummelled.

I'd understand if she simply got pummelled, but the thing is once she revealed that she's out of ammo she simply smiled and stood there. She didn't even raise a arm or anything that would indicate that she was at least trying to defend herself.
It's like she thought, "Oh 3 against 1, ah let's not even bother and get it over with".

Well of course. She didn't have a chance. I mean she could defend herself from them for only so long...they still had weapons.
And even if she managed to beat all 3 of them and get away. She'd probobly be badly injured and...oh is that a siren?
I'd rather just have them kill me quickly then to have to fend them off for a while and get more of the **** beat out of me.
And she was really only attacking them so Rose could get away, she probobly knew that she could only do so much.
More realistic then her just trying to fight all of them off and delay what would eventually happen anyway.
I doubt she thought they would burn her alive:o

Silent Hill, while not amazing, is easilly the best video game movie made yet. One thing that really helps it is that the monster/visual designs are fantastic. It's a credit not only to the those responsible for the monsters, but also to how incredible the design work of Silent Hill is in the first place.
I think that one of the movies saving graces was how well done the visual effects were, how perfectly they replicated the art of the Silent Hill games in terms of "Hell" and the creatures.
The movies weakness though, is the script and the actors. Both could have been improved. Hopefully the movie does well enough that the studio makes a sequel (with probably having 5-10 million shaved off the budget because it's probably only going to do a little bit better than break even :( ).
My sibling saw the movie, she's a Silent Hill fan as I am, but she didn't like it and said it was "the most R-rated movie she's ever seen" yet she had no problem with Sin City or the violence in that. I've come across a few people who have said that the movie was "Too gory and disturbing", but honestly, I find horrible acts of violence much easier to swallow in the context of it being demons and dark gods and extremist religion than I do with something like Sin City. In Sin City, the violence is there without a shred of real justification, and these are 'normal' people, to me that's a lot more objectionable than something that's brought about due to hell and ocultists.
Those Nurses were pretty hot... :O

So Anyway Silent Hill is falling fast...:( I'm not holding my breath about it making 10 million over the next weekend (which would bea 50% drop) I really hope is shows some legs and manages to surpass the production/advertising cost of 50 million so we can get our Silent Hill 2 with James.

Of course DVD sales will help them out a lot... It might be a bit early to judge, but it dropped significantly from friday to sunday and some people are crazy so it seems the movie has bad word of mouth, plus there were like 10 people in the theater when I went to see it on monday for the 10 showing. :(

If anything that just added to Cybil's badassness. She did what she had to do, then fends three miners and a crazy b**ch off with an empty gun. Shoots, the gun clicks, she smiles, and takes a beating.

I just can't believe that she lived after being beat with a 3 inch pipe like that. I mean come on, you beat her like that, then you burn her? Ouch. Great effect of having the skin peel away, I loved that.
All in all, I think these were some of the best deaths I've seen in a long while.

yeah... i finally got around to seeing this last night. great style, very creepy and disturbing, so-so acting, mediocre to downright bad dialogue... the ending was stupid, as were alot of the plot points.
although this was the second best videogame based movie i've ever seen, that really isn't saying much if you think about it.
i think the title of best videogame movie goes to Advent Children. if you have only seen the dubbed japanese version, i suggest you go buy or rent the english version. alot of the dialogue has been revised to make a much, much more cohesive story. not to mention the action is some of the sickest crap you're likely to see like, ever.

Well it is animated so it'll always look a lot cooler in that aspect.

I don't recall that. It's been a long time since I've played part 3 though. I just can't remember anything in 3 making a difference on whether she lived or not.

My statement has zero to do with the film. It isn't that much like the game. As far as me being selfish about people not playing the game, it came out what? We gotta be creeping up on then years I guess. I know I should put that sort of stuff in spoiler tags, I just don't see the point after so long. :(

Well, you can get some great recollections of what happened very specifically in the games across the internet. I'm sure you can even find the main points on Youtube or somewhere similar. If you never get to play them, I think it's worth it just to watch them at least.

Sean Bean does resemble James Sunderland in a interesting way. If they go with the sequel and they follow the Silent Hill II storyline, then one can and will see great results.
Personally it would be wonderful story and a great break-out role for Sean so he can show a lot more emotion, anger, and sadness when it comes to his wife in Silent Hill.
Then we can get a deeper meaning of Pyramid Head's origins and so forth.

An observation from someone at another forum:
Another thing that we noticed that drives us to believe that Mr. DeSilva is REALLY James Sunderland 2.0, is that he is very timid towards other men, but he's willing to raise his voice at and even get physical with women when he's mad. Also, the way he talks and his mannerisms remind me a lot of James.
If joo are a fan of SH2 and have seen the moofie give that a read. Or if you just want to read something hidden by spoiler bars go right ahead. It's not spoilerific, and what's underneath this line is probably worse.
She also went on to say how they should use the SHII storyline in a sequel where Sean Bean goes to search for answers and then Pyramid Head will play a bigger role and whatnot.
