Hi Guys! Just signed up on the fourms and wanted to say how much I enjoy the fan art section. Great stuff. For those of you who don't know me, I've worked for Image comics and currently working with Corgi creating Marvel licensed statues based on my designs, artwork and style. Hopefully if I have enough time soon I will be doing some more sequential art. Take a look at my stuff and let me know what you think. www.markspears.com (http://www.markspears.com) I'd love to hear from you. Again, great forum.

Many thanks!

Mark

welcome to the hype! I bet you will be an inspiration for many members on this board seeing as how you are already in the business. There are some really talented people on here, and I'm sure that you can bestow a lot of wisdom for them and even those with not as much talent (like me) can learn to grow an improve as artists.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the comments. As some of you stated, my style is more "classic" or "old school". I can adapt my style based on the project but prefer the "classic" syle.

Many thanks!

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input. I'm about to start working on my next statues it looks like. This will be a "vs" set. Still have to figure out who. Any suggestions are welcome. I was thinking of something like Spider-man vs Wolverine. I wanted to do a Hulk vs someone but the weight drives up the cost. The statues are 1/12th scale and are all metal, fully painted.

I dunno if it has been done yet, but I would love to see Colossus VS. The Hulk... I think that would be interesting.... or maybe Juggernaut vs. the Hulk!!!!!

MarkSpears
02-10-2006, 03:27 PM
Both of thos sounds great. The only problem is weight. These are metal statues and by himself, the Thing weighs as much as a bowling ball. Would be hard to ship two big guys on one statue. I've talked to them about making the base split apart so you can create your own dream battles, that may help on the weight issue.

Absolutely; I think Carrie Fisher was gorgeous as Princess Laya, but she's not your 'stereotypical beauty'; her features are very subtle, so it's hard to achieve her allure with a minimal application media such as pen and ink.

here you can find some cool free fonts and some free special fx's. Just pop 'em in with photshop or paintshop. You can even use them in licensed work they don't mind.

And check out: www.drawingboard.org, there are tons of pro's and artist lurking around there.

Actually I don't do advertising, at least thats not what I am doing for Marvel. The pictures above showing my artwork in the background are some concept designs I did, shown at the Toy Fair convention. They displayed them their showing what will be coming soon. I'm a comic book artist but I also do other projects as well, like statue design. The Marvel statues are being made based on my artwork, style and poses. Basically I figure out who I think would be the best statue, then lay out a few prelims and we decide what to go forward with. Then I do different angles and views of the pose along with any other pieces like face shots, etc. Whatever I had to do to insure a good sculpt. The sculptor then takes my work and duplicates it in
3d based on the designs.

As for comics, I did Ulitman #1 for Image about 3 years ago and was offerend to head up a 3d animation division after the comic was released. I took the job but left their last year wanting to get back into comics. Since then I have done artwork for a few novels, covers for independent comics, and so on...basically whatever companies contact me for.

I'm doing some new samples for different companies right now though looking for some more work in licensing (like Star Wars, etc) I really enjoy that type of work and also some sequential art (Marvel and DC) which is my first love. Though I should be doing the statues though thru 2008 since it doesn't take up too much of my time.

Actaully I am a self taught artist. I did take an one art class in Highschool but didn't really learn anything. I studied a lot of the great comic book artist, finding out why they did things, what I liked about their work, etc. I also studied the human body and skin. Also clothes and how they fold. You just need to send in a plot synopsis to a comic comapny using their characters. If hey like it they will ask for a script.

Nice work- I aways like your stuff. Its great to see some people out there drawing an older, more classic school of style.

I dont quite think your colouring is as good as your lines though.

So do would you say you make much of a living on your pieces? Im away interested in peoples beliefs in if there is much of the future in doing art. Im lucky enough to do being a job where I get paid (a little )to draw- but you need to be very talented (like yourself)or be at the right place at the right time (like myself) to have one.

Do you have any advice to anyone who is thinking of getting a job in the industry?

MarkSpears
03-11-2006, 02:48 PM
I'm really a penciler. I don't try and be an inker or colorist, some jobs call for that but I really love penciling and I think that is were I am best used. For concept work they want a colored final version for the sculptor to know what the colors will be when it's finished.

As far as making a living do this, my advice would be have a style that can be used for different things. Some people love to do a animated style like Bruce Timm's or a manga type style you see in some of the comics. Although those are great styles, they don't cross over well to other markets. In my same style I have done work for novels, comics, concept art, etc. In the end though I would say draw the way that makes you happy. As for me, I tried to get comic work back in 97 a few years out of highscool. I was turned down and was told to practice and get better. That was the last time I looked for work, everything that I have gotten since has been them contacting me. So I'm not really sure how hard it is right now trying to land some of those jobs. I am going to shop some sequential samples around soon because I enjoy doing sequential art so much and want to do it again. So we'll see.

Also working in the comics field usually means your working freelance, that has it's perks and it's disadvantages.

Do you have any advice to anyone who is thinking of getting a job in the industry?

haha, well I tried to do something a little different with him. I made him yellow with yellow eyes like his description in the book. Hulk was actually inspired by Frankenstein when Kirby first drew him so I guess everything comes full circle.

GOD it's nice to see some real old-style art. Reminds me of everything I saw as a little kid in the 70's.
I had to stop buying comics in the 90's when everything became EXTREME with every character laid over the same symmetrical, gritted teeth, Michael Jackson nose, and a trillion scratchy little meaningless lines everywhere ( i.e. Rob Liefeld/Todd MacFarlane :barf: ) template.

It's like the nice, solid old kind of art where the characters are the star as opposed to the artist, like John Romita, Sal+John Buscema, Al Milgrom kind of art.
Makes me want to try to commision you to do something for me. :)

Weird though, 'cause someone mentioned John Byrne on the first page and I was like "Wha??", but then I saw that smaller colored Batman and it looks like it was taken right from a Byrne comic.

Heh, I like the stuff so much it seems a shame to say anything bad at all, but I do have to say, that Power Girl is terrible.
Love the rest though
The Frankenstein is intense. I'd say that's my favorite so far.

Thanks for the comments. I guess I would say my Batman is a little Neal Adams, a little Byrne, a little Buscema. I'll post the bigger image so you can judge for yourself. As for Powergirl, is it the perspective or just the way she's drawn?

it's funny you point those things out about new school art... and they're true things. i didn't catch a lot of it before and maybe it's because i don't read a wide enough variety of comments.

I like the costume you gave powergirl myself, but you gave her a head that looks like she's on her way to pick up the kids from a soccer game and then you gave her a rack that makes her look like a porn star. Smaller boobs than those are sexy too  Those are my PG criticisms. Other than that I really like your style.

Did you go to school for art?

I think that's it. Her upper body looks as if you are looking at her straight on while her lower portion is more of a bird's I feel. It looks a little odd.

the rest of your work looks amazing though, and it is good to see some old school work.

Actually I didn't base it off of any real cars. When I layed it out I tried to keep in mind the old Super Powers batmobile and the batmobile from the first Batman movie. I did see a picture of a prototype concept pontiac firebird from the 50's that had the turbins up front like this before, so I thought I would use that.

Awesome batmobile. I'm not really getting the turbine-ish things in front though. They look kind of weird and I don't really get the functon either as the seem to head right to the wheel well. Maybe I'm misinterpreting what they are. Could you clarify that?

Sweet design. Love the rims and fins.

LOL you guys are funny. Sure, you can see the artwork for the statues. I will post some soon. As for my colors, yeah I am still new to the digital coloring. Usually I just used prisma markers to color commissions. For the concept art they wanted digital colors for guides on how to color the statues. I am improving slowly though but I am still just a penciler, not a colorist or inker.

Do Gladiator vs Collosus from the pheonix saga. You couls put the collapsing column over their heads.
