We're about two thirds of the way through S5 right now and I was curious to see where people's heads were at with the season so far.

I'll update this post with new episode titles as they're announced, but here's where we stand as of 2/10/06:

Aired eps
01 Arrival
02 Mortal
03 Hidden
04 Aqua
05 Thirst
06 Exposed
07 Splinter
08 Solitude
09 Lexmas
10 Fanatic
11 Lockdown
12 Reckoning
13 Vengeance
14 Tomb

Unaired
15 Cyborg
16 Hypnotic
17 Void
18 Fragile
19 Mercy
20 Fade
21 Oracle
22 Vessel

Rank 'em! Ga head, you know you want to. :p

Here's my list:

Hidden
Vengeance
Mortal
Splinter
Arrival
Reckoning
Solitude
Aqua
Exposed
Thirst
Lexmas
Lockdown
Fanatic
Tomb

BTW, my criteria for that order is solely based on how apt I am to rewatch any particular episode, because if I can watch it repeatedly, there must be *something* about it that I really enjoy.

Here's my list and the scores I gave each one in my reviews...

Interesting seeing it spelled out like this, btw. For example, I loathed most of Aqua but graded that on a curve because of Marsters most excellent introduction as Brainiac.

EDIT: changed my mind about some of these...

Hidden - 5
Reckoning - 5
Vengeance 4.5
Splinter 4.5
Arrival - 4.5
Solitude - 4.5
Mortal - 4
Lexmas - 4.5
Thirst - 4
Aqua - 4
Lockdown - 4
Fanatic - 4
Tomb - (grade still pending, but probably will be a 3.5)

Exposed

(1) Lois & Clark episode

(2) Lois Undercover as Stripper (The scene was hot & Funny)

(3) Lois once showing she not a A Damsel in Distress (kicking The diplomat ass, before getting tasered, and again while in The helcopther

(4) Lots of Forshadowing

(5) Tom Wopat & John Schneider (I'm a huge fan of The Dukes of Hazzard Tv series)

(6) Seeing Jonathan/John Schneider driving Dodge Charger / General Lee

(7) NO LANA LANG :D

\8/ The ending with Lois & Clark (more forshadowing Of their Future together :supes:

Lexmas

(1) Lana Luthor - (I loved KK, She gave an outstanding preformance. I found this version of Lana to be a beautiful peaceful angel, she was really happy,Kind & Sweet.
She was nothing like her pain in the ass, self centered teenager version.

(2) Lex Luthor - (We finally got to see Michael Rosenbaum in Lex, Which was just so damn funny. Lex driving a old beat up car, Lex trying to put the carseat in the car. Lex & The Christmas tree)

(3) The Christmas theme - I was happy for once Smallville had a Christmas theme.

(4) Lionel Luthor - John Glover preformance both in Lex's dream & in The hospital scenes were awesome.

(5) Clark as Santa that was Funny - remind's me of a Lois & Clark Christmas episode.

(6) Clark showing The real Santa, that Christmas is still meaning full and he shouldn't give up.

I gave one point for each level, so the ep at the bottom of everybody's list got one point, while the ep at the top got 14. (There have been 14 episodes so far.)

Here are the numbers:

01 Arrival 10 10 10 9 10 10 14 9 14 9 11 14 11 = 141
02 Mortal 12 9 8 11 9 8 7 2 8 11 12 8 10 = 115
03 Hidden 14 14 14 14 13 14 13 6 13 14 13 12 14 = 168
04 Aqua 7 1 9 4 2 5 2 10 6 6 7 3 4 = 66
05 Thirst 5 7 1 5 8 6 4 1 7 2 3 4 8 = 61
06 Exposed 6 2 3 2 3 1 1 12 5 5 4 7 5 = 56
07 Splinter 11 12 12 12 12 11 10 13 11 12 5 11 13 = 145
08 Solitude 8 8 11 7 7 9 11 14 10 13 14 9 6 = 127
09 Lexmas 4 6 7 10 5 7 8 11 4 7 10 10 7 = 96
10 Fanatic 2 5 4 3 4 3 5 4 2 4 1 5 2 = 44
11 Lockdown 3 4 5 8 6 4 6 5 3 8 6 6 3 = 67
12 Reckoning 9 13 13 13 14 13 12 8 12 10 9 1 12 = 139
13 Vengeance 13 11 6 6 11 12 9 7 9 3 8 13 9 = 117
14 Tomb 1 3 2 1 1 2 3 3 1 1 2 2 1 = 23

User ratings are listed in posting order and taken from the lists posted by AgentPat, avidreader, boyscouT, Serene, mellyM, triplet, Red X, Kal-El 8, KalKai, Crisis Superman, Brainiac 8, vyperman7 and rumpuso.

I couldn't factor in the following users because:

Hulk: incomplete list (Mortal)
boydston_14: incomplete list (Lexmas & Exposed)
Robin_Begins: not in order of preference
superboy13_bt: not in order of preference

(Just a reminder, it doesn't matter what criteria you chose to rank the eps, but the lists need to be complete and in ORDER of preference if you'd like your numbers factored into the big picture. Giving them a 2/10, or 10/10 doesn't help if more than one episode shares the same rating on the same list.)

Okay, so here are the results:

01 Hidden 168
02 Splinter 145
03 Arrival 141
04 Reckoning 139
05 Solitude 127
06 Vengeance 117
07 Mortal 115
08 Lexmas 96
09 Lockdown 67
10 Aqua 66
11 Thirst 61
12 Exposed 56
13 Fanatic 44
14 Tomb 23

Very interesting! A lot can be deduced from this list, I think. :)

It is actually interesting though Reckoning should be a lower and Mortal should be higher...and Vengeance way lower. Anyways Ill rate them in my order then, downward spiraling from good to dreadful:

Hidden
Solitude
Splinter
Mortal
Reckoning
Arrival
Lockdown
Lexmas
Aqua
Exposed
Fanatic
Vengeance
Thirst
Tomb

And I followed the Agent's method of listing them in the order that Id actually prefer to watch them over in (the eps Id watch over again at the top and the ones I never want to see again at the bottom.)

After adding Crisis and Brainiac's numbers to the list, Mortal has pulled ahead of Vengeance by two points, and we no longer have a tie between Lockdown and Thirst (the former took the lead over the latter). Hidden is still #1, and WAY out front. It's followed by Reckoning, Splinter, Arrival and Solitude, all of which are separated by no more than five points respectfully. Vengeance and Lexmas mark the halfway points. Episodes below that mark have less than half the amount of points as the corresponding episodes in placement above them.

Interesting "race" we have here. :D

I agree, it is difficult. There are a few eps that I may not have loved the "A" story of, but individual scenes in them earn brownie points.

Its kind of hard to really rank, because there are more than I few I pretty much like equally, its been a good season:)Oh, I had a difficult time too. But episodes that are equally favored would only be separated by one point per each person voting, so it wouldn't throw the numbers off that much. At this point, somebody could come on and put Hidden at the absolute bottom of their list and Reckoning at the top and the respective placement between eps would still remain the same. We'd have to have some wildly different opinions on favorite episodes to change the big picture at this point. That said, I probably won't keep up with editing the list because it's freakin' time consuming LOL. I only did it to get an overall snap shot. When the season ends, I'll bump the thread and see how opinions have changed with the inclusion of the last third of the season.

And PS: Can this board be ANY more slow? Did the Hype change servers or something within the last month or so? Anybody know? It used to be one of the most reliable message boards on the Net, but now it's excruciatingly slow. *sigh*

So far, it's my favorite season next to the third. The jury is still out as to whether it will stay that way. I mean, I REALLY loved the third season.

But that shows opinon differences, my wife's favorite season so far is the first. And I know a few people who are just hating this season. Whatcha gonna do? :O

Arrival - 10/10 ( My second favorite episode of the whole show. Loved it)
Vengeance - 10/10 (One of the best episodes they have ever done. Only second to Arrival this season. Totally made up for the mess that was Reckoning)
Hidden - 9.5/10 (Lion-El/Clark in the FOS, missile save, and a lot of suspense)
Splinter - 9.5/10 (TW's acting with the paranoia was awesome, and I just the whole episode was well done)
Lexmas - 9/10 (A fantastic Lex episode. One of my favorite Lex centric after Shattred, Memoria, and Prodigal)
Solitude - 9/10 (Great episode, but I was really dissapointed with the fight between Brainiac and Clark. Way too short)
Mortal - 9/10 (Great Chlark moments, Clex fight, and I liked the development for Clark)
Exposed - 9/10 (Great Clois, awesome effects on the hellicopter grab, and the Duke reunion)
Lockdown - 8.5/10 (Awesome effects on the Lana save and good continuity with the events in Arrival)
Fanatic - 8/10 (Pretty good suspense, and nice effects on the save with JK at the rally)
Thirst - 8/10 (Chloe/DP, awesome Lex/Fine interaction, and much better than I thought it would be overall)
Aqua - 7/10 (Very dissapointing. Should have been a lot better)
Tomb - 5/10 (I gave it a 5 because of AM's acting and the continuity that the ending had with S4. But the episode sucked and was pretty pointless overall)
Reckoning - 3/10 (One of my least favorite eps ever. The most dissapointed I have ever been after an episode)

I think we should keep this up, I think its a great idea and its fun to read as well.

If you need help tallying up scores and whatnot I'm happy to help you. It would be good to update after this week's episode before we go on the hiatus, and then update again before the last 3 episodes.

I also had trouble ranking some of the middle order as I kind of have the same regard for all of the eps.

This season has been phenomenal.

Tell ya what, lets wait till after the hiatus and start a new thread. It will be easier to tally from a brand new list, and the idea of ranking episodes won't be overkill. I think that would work best.

To me Vengenance was good enough to get a 10.

It kicked the crap out of Reckoning, which I felt was a horrible episode. I will explain why I feel this way. The whole show has been leading up to Lana learning the truth, yet the reveal was rushed and poorly handled. There was no mention from Clark that Krypton was destroyed which was responsible for the meteor shower that killed Lana's parents, there was not really much of a reaction from Lana, as I felt she was way too accepting, and there was no looking back on the past. I really wanted her to bring up the tornado in Vortex especially since the jump/flight and the tornado were two times Clark defied gravity. Not to mention that it was the first time Lana really started asking questions. Then there was Lex finding out about Clark and it not amounting to anything. In both Hug from S1 and Shattered from S3 we got hear his thoughts on it. All we got was a gasp. It just seemed like a wasted opportunity to me.

In the end Clark ultimately chose Lana over his father because he was told that nature would find a balance. So they could have at least let Lana walk away knowing the truth to make the death more meaningful. Why not tell Lana the truth, and use the knowledge of the accident to keep her safe? Lana being in danger from knowing was ALWAYS a risk, and he still told her the first time around. Clark also got off way too easily with Martha. Overall, the episode was just too rushed and would have been much better as a two episode story arc to fit in more things like fallout over Lana's initial death instead of just showing up at the FOS, the scene between JK and Clark in the FOS, Lex's thoughts on finding out about Clark, etc..

For being the big 100th episode that was supposed to change the course of the show as we know it, all that really changed was JK's death, which turned out to be for nothing. Everything else is back to square one.

Now Vengenance had me skeptical going in because of how terrible Reckoning was. But it turned out to be one of the best episodes they have done in my opinion. It felt like an old episode of Smallville to me. There were things that would make a great episode in my eyes. Lex vs Lionel, great Supes references, nice character development, and an ending that had an impact. Vengenance had all four. I just thought it was a really well done episode overall and everything worked for me, which is why I gave it a 10.

I don't feel SV has had a perfect episode yet.

As for my opinions on these episodes...

Arrival-- This episode actually got me pretty hyped for the most part. What I didn't like was the use of the Kryptonian villains. I personally found them to be quite generic and didn't see that sense of intelligence that I would expect. I mean Clark has yet to realize his physical and mental capabilities that basically are an inherent part of himself. With that in mind I would have thought the villains would have been a better challenge. Also, why send them to the PZ so quick? Instead of rushing the episode along, they could have fleshed it out better into the next episode.

Solitude-- My complaint on this one? LOIS or Erica Durance aka LINO (Lois in name only)... Remember how Lex helped her out with her sister??????????? Where does she get off having such hostility towards him and out of nowhere??????????????????????? Other than that though, I thought it was a well written episode and I enjoyed the performances by everyone.

Lexmas-- The suicide Santa crap messed with a great episode :down

I disagree, Maybe if you read The Smallville Magazine # 12 you've have understand why Lois had so much hostility towards Lex.

After The event's of "Aqua" In the magazine their's a story that takes place after "Aqua" where Lois & Clark attend a LuthorCorp company picnic, Where a FOTW crashes the party seeking Revenge on Luthor .

Again that's your opinion , I like the idea of Santa losing faith in Christmas & Future SUPERMAN shows him that even thought many have lost the True meaning of Christmas, Their are still some that know the true meaning of Christmas . And that It wouldn't be Chirstmas without Santa .

I really liked the Santa aspect of Lexmas. It emphasizes Clark giving up what he wanted (spending Christmas with Lana) for the sake of the greater good. Isn't that what Superman is all about?

It would have been cool if it were the real Santa for him to know about Clark and what he could do. I would have loved to see the discussion between the two of Clark's powers and that he has a bigger purpose in life.

Hidden is still WAY out in front by 22 points, the widest gap between episodes in the top half of the list. Impressive. But Splinter and Arrival have now moved ahead of Reckoning respectively. Mortal has fallen behind Vengeance, and Lockdown has overtaken Aqua. The gap between Mortal and Lexmas now marks the halfway point, with everything from Mortal on up representing the top echelon of eps so far.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the numbers change when we reach the hiatus in a few weeks. :)

You make some points Ryan that are clearly what alot of fans think, however I dont think the episode was meant to be so cut and dry.

The reason why we didnt go into all the detail with Lana finding out about the secret is because that is going to be done at a later date when she does find out for real and gets to keep it. That teaser was just that a teaser into what the basics would be if Clark told Lana his secret.

I thought the gasp and the look that Lex gave after seeing Clark fly by was perfect. At first when Lex came out of the car it was all about Lana, then bang he sees Clark and that is all he is interested in. That look will now set up the plot for the Lexana. He may have feelings for Lana, but its all about Clark.

And as for the sacrificing his Dad for Lana, well that is such a lengthy conversation that has so many aspects to it, that I wouldnt even try to discuss it here. :)

In regards to the Clana reveal, that was my point though. Why put it off yet again? If there was anytime that Lana should finally know the truth it was the 100th episode. In order for the progress of the show to move forward, they need to give the fans resolution. I don't know about those who ship Clana, but I have been sick of the angst and endless back and forth since the beginning of S3. I loved the initial reaction of Lex with the gasp. But I was upset that we did not get more out of it. At least a "I knew it all along" or something along those lines. I just wanted Lex to say or do something.

Clark didn't know who would replace Lana. But he was told that nature would find a balance. So even though he didn't outright say that he was choosing Lana over his father. That is ultimately what happened because JK took Lana's place. To me, it made JK's death seem meaningless because nothing in the Clana relationship changed to warrant JK dying instead of Lana.

Well I guess its all about pacing, so stay tuned. I think something big is going to happen with regards to Lana. Dunno what, but think it will. She has to make a bigger impact than what she has done so far with Clark's journey.

He didn't choose Lana over his father, "Fate" had to have him pay a price, he kept protecting Lana so Fate found a way...

Martha even said to Clark "Could you have chosen between them if you'd had the chance?" It wasn't his fault.

He blames himself, but if there is any blame to lay it should be on Jor-El instead. He saved Clark's life which "unbalanced" things... The Universe needed to be righted.

So it wasn't Lana's life that Jonathan died to save, it was Clark's.

I'm not sure I totally buy the whole Universe needing to be balanced thing, but given a choice between Clark's life and Jonathan's I'd pick Clark.

His destiny isn't to die from a gunshot....

Jonathan's number was up anyway, eventually. His heart has been weak since the third season.

Thats exactely where you`re wrong. Superman would never pick one. He would chose both. Clark knew that there was a balance. I`m sorry but i don`t buy your theory. Smalliville turned Clark into Spider-man, making him become a hero because of guilt. And this to me is unaceptable.

And i`m not going to mention the fact the Death itself was so badly filmed and unemotional at all or the fact they treated the audience like stupid people and things went back to square one with Lana not knowing his secred identity or even having a relationship with him. This episode destroyed what Superman stands for, in my opinion. Superman is not who he is because of guilt over his father death, period.

Well, I disagree... I was worried about that too when I heard about the death but Clark isn't feeling guilty now... not since Vengeance. He has now realized it wasn't really his fault.

He didn't choose, Fate did or the Universe or whatever.

He saved Lana, yes, but did that because he thought he could cheat and save her so no one would have to die because of him. He was wrong and so fate found his father instead.

In a way, it's similar to what happened to Clark in STM: he discovered even with how powerful he was that he couldn't save everyone.

THAT Clark's journey to the arctic so he could form the FOS was caused by his guilt over not being able to save his father... It's not that much different than what happened in Smallville, IMO.

I couldnt ever bring myself to read that guy's reviews, if that's what you could call them. No wonder you feel the way you do.

We had an episode after Reckoning which clearly showed that Clark was not going to become Superman out of guilt. He is going to become Superman because his dad brought him up with strong morals and to do the right thing.

You need to listen to the dialogue of an entire episode instead of picking it to pieces between the commercial breaks like Bailey does.

I disagree. In Superman the movie Its totally different. Clark, feeling that he couldn`t save everyone, wanted to do more for this world and went to the artic to know more about him and became Superman. In Smallville, Jor-el warned that there would be a balance of the unverse. To my mind, Superman doesn`t chose between two lives. He wouldn`t take that risk. Jonathan died because of him. Because he went back in time to save Lana. So yes it is his fault, even though he is not directly responsible, his actions lead to Jonathans death, so he is no hero to me.

Yeah. I`ve seen it and it was a good move. But the death itself of Jonathan was worse than Anakin`s mom death in Star Wars episode II. And his father didn`t need to die for him to be like this. Arrogant much?

As for him no longer being a virgin has anything to do with him being Superman: I don't think that has anything to do with anything.

I don't know why people get so hung up on that. Just because he had sex with a woman he loves doesn't make him less of a hero than before, although telling you that is like yelling into the wind: it's a pointless excercise so whatever... you don't have to reply to that.

Most of what your quoting above Spider is assumption. You are just guessing that things are going to play out the way you have them visioned in your mind.

I say for anyone that is having trouble with this fate and destinty stuff, should watch episode 3.12 Hereafter (interesting that episode 12 was the first time that we see Jonathan have a problem with his heart) and episode 3.17 Legacy.

Both of those episodes deal with fate and destiny and deal directly with Clark and Jonathan.

Well, I think you are mistaking plot points you don't like for "lack of character development"... it ain't the same thing.

We're not talking the same language here.

Character development is a character changing over time, which has happened.

Clark is far more confident and sure of himself. Go back and watch the first season, he's changed a lot since the Pilot.

In fact he's actually changed a lot even since this season's premiere...

As for what you think is going to happen, I'm not so sure what you've spelled out above is where the show is headed....

Do we have to make a new list after each episode? Can't we just say the latest title, and where we would put it on our original list?

Cyborg - 8/10 (Amazing ending, Thompson was awesome as Victor, and loved evil Lex. Too much Clana though, and not enough action)

I haven't watched Exposed much either, I mean theres certainly nothing glaringly wrong with it, its just not a stand out. But I liked it better than Aqua and Tomb--Tomb was the first one I actually deleted off my tivo right after it aired.
I see lots don't like Thirst, but I loved that ep, so funny, it was a nice break

THe episode with Chloe and the dead girl was the worst i`ve seen of Smallville. Nothing to do with Superman. The writers simple forgot the basis of this show. God, how can the producers of this show greenlight episodes like this???

My criteria for order preference is based on how apt I am to rewatch a specific episode, so my list has changed a little bit since the last time we did this. The separation gets a little fuzzy with episodes listed after Cyborg on the list below. For example, Hypnotic and Void are probably higher than they should be, but since they aired so recently, I'm more likely to rewatch them more than say episodes like Lexmas or Exposed.

I think the eps will settle into a more permanent order of preference after the season ends, but here's my list as it stands today...

01 Hidden
02 Mortal
03 Arrival
04 Splinter
05 Reckoning
06 Solitude
07 Aqua
08 Vengeance
09 Cyborg
10 Hypnotic
11 Void
12 Lexmas
13 Exposed
14 Thirst
15 Lockdown
16 Fanatic
17 Tomb

I'll do a tally through Void when more folks have posted. Should be interesting to see how much has changed.
