Negative, I have tried everything. Hell, ask Storm, I gave him my wife's gym membership so he could go with me since she never went (2 times in 6 months equals never).

She's not, exactly, out-of-shape; but the girl could stand to do some toning.

In a way. One does need to shock one's musclse, doing different work-outs does just that.

But what you speak of is simple changing in reps; which, one should do, with all muscles groups, on a weekly basis.

Even changing up your rep/set config every 2-3 weeks is enough to shock your muscles a bit and keep them from "learning" your routine, so to speak.

And welcome aboard, mrvlknight21.

Ahhh back into the swing of things, feeling a little sore which is nice. For all of those beginers asking what routine(s) they should do to get into working out, the current one I am using is pretty straight forward and simple. At least for me, I am in pretty good shape, but haven't lifted weights for roughly 10 months.

Here is a link.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mercedes2.htm

There may be some other ones on there that work better for other people but I like this one. I am modifying it a bit for myself though and, but I like it's slow approach while still building muscle and losing fat.

Although I should mention that if you have never or have not in a very long time lifted weights, you should just pick one excersies per body muscle group not the 2-4 they recommend. Plus use very light weights 5-10lbs.

I wouldn't go beyond that, even for me I am a little sore, mostly on by back though from pull ups. The pull up part was the only section where I could not perform the optimum number of reps, which was 15, I can only do 7 now  I used to be able to do 20

Anyway, I hope this helps anyone out there that wants to start exercising and take it nice and slow. I am really looking to avoid any injuries this time around so this works perfect for me.

Oh hey Jag, I could use your help/advice.

I am taking your advice after reading up on bb.com recently (starting to spend lots of time there) and I am going with 1.5 g of protein per lb of body weight (approx).

So right now I weight 150lbs (well for some reason I lost weight and am now down to 147) but I am basing it on 150lbs, so I am trying to consume 225g per day, which isn't hard for me to do, except for the fact that

a) I just started to workout again so it is taking a little while to get my appetite back up to eat that much

&

b) What else can I eat?

My diet so far consists of 5-6 egg whites in the morning, a 100% whole wheat turkey sandwhich (30-40g of protein), a protein shake after I work out, a can of tuna, either prok chop, steak or grilled chicken and broccoli for dinner. I also mix in either a bannana, apple and or a large glass of OJ.

I know you may talk me out of so many fruits but I enjoy fruit and like to keep them in my diet.

Any other protein packed foods I can eat that will help me stay at 225g of protein a day Jag?

Eat more chicken and tuna. Snack on some nuts (peanuts, cashews, etc.). Peanut butter is a great protein source. Beans (kidney and pinto especially) are a good source. And you can always drink more shakes. They're cheap and they work wonders, even if they aren't as ideal as real food. Be sure you're doing some cardio as it will help you keep your appetite up, too. Welcome back to the Church Of Iron.

I got some Rudi's Organic bread today. I got the kind that only has sea salt in it. :csad: the rest has organic cane juice in it. This is sort of misleading. It says No High Frutose(sp?) Corn Syrup and Trans Fat on the package. Or is Cane Juice just natural sugar?

The only bread I know of that has zero HFCS, corn syrup, cane juice, and sea salt is Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain 15 Grain. Nothing bad in it and I've checked the lable many times. odd how other brands I've seen from them has stuff in it.

Pretty bad. I get enough of an anaphylactic shock from it to swell my throat up and constrict my breathing, inflame my asthma really bad and it gives me a horrible, itchy rash. It's definitely not fun and I got to take an ambulance ride a few years ago because of it (ran out of my inhaler). I avoid peanuts and anything with peanut oil in it like the plague. And I'm lucky. Some people have to keep a shot of adrenaline on them just in case they come into contact with peanut oil. Scary. A guy I used to work with had a son who was so allergic to peanut oil that someone who had just a trace of it on their fingers touched his cheek very briefly and it damn near killed him; put him in a coma for three days. For people who have a peanut allergy, it's damn scary.

The fats in almonds and salmon are actually good for you. I don't think you're in any danger of getting mercury poisoning from a serving of seafood a day (tuna, salmon, mackerel, etc.). If it were all you ate, MAYBE you'd poop a thermometer, but even then....still on the low end of chance.

I wish I could eat more tuna a week, cuz I'd have a sammich everyday.Me too. So easy to make and they taste amazing. You get used to it. I'm right at 200 right now. I've upped my cardio a bit and dropped about 5 lbs of BF in the last couple of weeks. Eating roughly 350 grams of protein a day at the moment. Without the shakes, I'd never make it.350!! :wow:

I take in about 250 and that takes a lot of planning on a workday with insane hours/commuting etc.

The fats in almonds and salmon are actually good for you. I don't think you're in any danger of getting mercury poisoning from a serving of seafood a day (tuna, salmon, mackerel, etc.). If it were all you ate, MAYBE you'd poop a thermometer, but even then....still on the low end of chance.

jagI eat a hell of a lot of fish (tuna/sardines/mackerel/salmon - more than one serving per day :csad:) so the mercury deal is a bit worrying. Maybe I need to cut back.

Yeah, it does take some planning and preparation to get that ratio. Some days I don't hit it, either, but I'm getting more consistent about doing so. People don't realize that it's WORK to actually eat that many calories and in those ratios every day. Especially if you're eating clean rather than junking it up.

You're probably okay. Just keep the water going and maybe look at a good anti-oxidant supplement like green tea capsules, which are cheap and have a lot of health benefits. They'll help with the free-radicals you're worrying about to a certain extent. The reality is though, life is a terminal disease. ;) Eating the fish is still far better for you than eating most of the crap everyone else is eating.

I'm definitely feeling the difference in the last month and a half though as I've never been quite as tight with my diet, and it's been enjoyable rather than unpleasant.

What's your max protein intake per meal? - with 50 you'd need seven strict well timed meals per day which is great discipline.

The eating part is harder for everyone. It does get easier as you learn what you're doing and how to do things easier with your prep and such. Not surprised you're feeling a definite difference. As you start to ramp up eating more calories, though, it does become more work. Still, I enjoy it much more than the garbage I used to eat.

I average 50-80 grams of protein per meal (sometimes more if I'm really working at it). I eat 6-7 times per day, depending on whether I'm carb cycling and whether it's a lifting day or not.

As you start to ramp up eating more calories, though, it does become more work. Still, I enjoy it much more than the garbage I used to eat.Mentally I feel 100 times better knowing that everything I've eaten/drank is something that's working for me rather than against me.

I start a new job on Monday with truly insane hours (12 1/2 per day) plus a two hour commute. Maintaining all this will become a lot more challenging.

I average 50-80 grams of protein per meal (sometimes more if I'm really working at it). I eat 6-7 times per day, depending on whether I'm carb cycling and whether it's a lifting day or not. I didn't realise the body could process that much (80g) in one go (would make things a lot easier for me). I've tried researching daily protein requirements and maximum protein intakes (in one go), but there seem to be very widely ranging viewpoints on the subject so I'm still quite unsure on it.

I drink gree tea in the mornings, but green tea extract capsules have a lot of benefits that you'd have to drown yourself in the stuff to get if you were drinking it:

Keep the water intake high and work your way up to that amount of intake at one time. The body will adapt to it. I don't think there's a standard rule on this because everyone is different. If you went from 40 grams in one sitting to 80, yeah, it might cause issues. But slowly increase by 10G at a sitting week over week, and you can do it.

Ugh. I feel like hell. I wound up taking a nap this afternoon to see if I'd feel a little bit better before working out and now I'm running a low-grade fever. :down

I just think it differs from person to person.

I know a guy who breaks a sweat when he is finished with his first set of whatever. And then with me, I don't really sweat until I get on the treadmill, and that's even after the first half mile.

Colossal Spoons

It also depends on the level of intensity too. I just realized that I've been doing more of a cardio workout that fat burning on the eliptical. My heart rate was usually way higher than my target fat loss rate as I was doing a low/high/low/high intensity interval. I actually need to slow down my pace and keep a slower rhythm cuz I was flying before.

Well, technically, Jay Cutler is the best bodybuilder in the world right now. The point is, if you want to add muscle you've got to lift heavy. By heavy I mean, as heavy as you can go while maintaining perfect form without breaking from that for any given rep/set configuration. Unless you're a genetic freak with access to a whole lot of AS, you're not going to get anywhere near as big as Ronnie. (I don't have much need or use for getting that big, either).

jag

mrvlknight21
02-11-2007, 04:54 PM
Ok, so Cutler is the current Mr.O, but the point remains.
Of course hypertrophy gains come with using 8-12 reps of one's 60-80% 1 rep max.
You can make gains in strength w/out adding much size by lifting heavier (80-100% of 1 rep max) for fewer reps (1-5). But, this isnt a science class and working out should be centered around what the individual wants. Do they want to look like Mr. O or a lean boxer, for example.
Me, personally, I could care less about gaining 20 pounds of muscle.

Completely agree that it's about what the individual wants. But the rep/set configuration and the type of lifts one does will help determine the sort of muscle they will likely put on. With a few exceptions, lifting as heavy as you can while keeping perfect form in accordance with the rep/set configuration you are using will help you with those goals.

I have a question for the fitness gods:

I have about 6 months to get back into shape before I head off to basic training and my two main goals are lose weight, and basically just get into better cardivascular shape so I'm prepeared for the running. My question is, should I focus on the actual cardio workouts more than fat-burning workouts, the other way around, or split them both evenly? Also, am I correct in thinking that higher heartrate= cardio while mildly high=fat burn ( I thought that's the case, but it's been a while since I trained and never had to worry about fat loss)?

Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing your fitness level is teh suck right now? I'd train for cardio so that you've got some conditioning when you get to basic, otherwise you will be sucking wind for the entire time you are there. Being in great cardiovascular shape will really help you and I have a feeling you'll see quite a bit of the fat drop off once you start training hard on the cardio piece.

Yeah, focus on getting your conditioning up to par. All they do at Basic is run you to death, make you do obstacle courses, make you eat, ****, shoot, sleep and run, run, run. The better shape you're in cardiovascular wise when you get there the better off you'll be. And the fat will drop off in the process. Good luck!

Hey guys, I was wondering if I should take whey protein??

Or any other kind of supplements??

This is how my workout routine is at the moment-

Monday - 1 hour body pump class. Stomach work, bar work, squats, lunges. Half an hour of swimming.

Tuesday - 1 hour indoor bike riding class. Half an hour of swimming.

Wedensday - Run in the morning. A bunch of different stuff with dumbells. Ab work.

Thursday - 1 hour body pump class involving the same stuff as monday. Half hour swimming.

Friday - 1 hour bike riding class. Half hour swimming.

Saturday - rest

Sunday - Ab work maybe.

I would research some work-out methods on how to work one's way up to a certain mile(s).

I am, I am Jag! Oh dear Gog am I. It sucks though, I am going through food so fast now that every 2-3 days I am back at the grocery store replacing something. Just stocked up on 20 cans of tuna though

So that should last me at least a week, hopefully two.

So I am thinking about bumping up to 2g of protein per lb of body weight.

So roughly 300g a day. 6 meals thoughout the day.

Have any advice Jag?

1) Breakfast, 6 egg whites (I think that's only 30g of protein roughly) 1 slice of wheat toast.

2) Whole wheat turkey sandwhich at least 30g of protein

3) Whey protein shake 2 scoops of optimum nutrition 48g of protein

4) 1 can of tuna, apple or banana

5) Shake again

6) Steak, chicken breast, pork chop of salmon, steamed broccoli and or small potato baked

I think I am short, only around 200 g with this plan.

At any rate, it depends on the portions you're going to eat with those meals. You're going to be short on your protein, though. Try bumping your shakes up to 60G's and snacking on some nuts or peanut butter during the day.

Needless to say, Jag speaks truth.

When I began my work-out venture, Mrvlknight21 had to train me to eat as well. And one habit, I can say is good, is eating all your protein and veggies.

For example, I just had a snack, and most would equate a snack with something to "munch" on. However, I just ate half a chicken breast, with a glass of V8.

My theory is, it is in one's snacks. Sure, I eat great, healthy meals; but I snack on the important stuff througout the day.

John Cena on cardio:

“I hate cardio, so if you can move quickly between sets, you don’t have to deal with that crap.”

“You can print this: I don’t do any straight cardio. I hate the treadmill. I hate the Stairmaster. I hate bikes. I hate it. This is my message to anyone out there looking to get in shape, wanting to know what to do: don’t do anything you don’t like because this should be fun. I enjoy being in the gym. I enjoy working out."

I don't think the second part is very good advice at all. I'm not particularly thrilled when I'm on the eliptical but it's that fact that I do it anyway and keep going that's rewarding.

Well I know that eating just the whites alone without the yolk will result ina major loss of protein but I am not sure how much. I do mix in 1-3 yolks in my egg whites, sometimes I will eat 6 whole eggs with the yolks it just depends.

But I think the carton does say something like 72% of daily cholestoral is in two eggs. Something like that.

I'm just trying to think of good exercises in the home I can do.

Any type of cardio will help you lose weight with a proper diet.

Eat lean, eat light, and eat alot. And, run, run, run.

You know what surprises me about you?

You can run like a madman when it comes time for hoops, and play for hours.

But you can't "just" run.

I've seen you, and the guys, play for hours.

What's the deal, man?

there is a purpose to that kind of running.

Running stairs is an awesome exercise. What do you mean by "long period of time"? Bc I doubt I could do that for a long period of time. I can do a stairmaster for a long period of time, but that pace is certainly slower than "running."

There is a purpose for "this" kind of running as well. I haven't heard you this excited since the cage-dancing incident at Cheese's.

Everytime you run, I want you to listen to "Rock the Craddle of Love."

HUH?
Shot anyone, lately?

you are actually speaking of 2 different incidents.
one night a girl who was an actual cage dancer downtown came over, so we turned the futon on its size so it was tall and had her dance "in" it.
The girl who stripped to "rock the cradle" was not a cage dancer, just a waitress at Lone Star.

You'd be better off dosing some creatine with your BCAA's 20 minutes before your workout and then taking the bulk of it with your BCAA's and Waxy Maize Starch immediately after your workout. That's when it will get into your muscles the quickest and aid in repair.

Ironically, Billy Idol just came on random play in my playlist.
