How much cardio do youse guys do in a week? I don't mean muscle and fitness **** that jag and Spoons are doing, but just on average. I don't want to get all buff and diesel, want to maintain that lean demeanor.1hr intensive on cardio days (3 times a week) & 30 mins easy pace on weight lifting days (3 times a week), nearly always on the elliptical.

Alright, so I did it today finally. Working out at home with my limited equipment is only getting me so far. So I joined 24hr today. I just wanted to sign up but of course I had to go through a whole tour and the speal (sp) of all that crap, and five personal training sessions.
It was funny, the guy asked me if I know how many calories a day I am eating and I told him approximately 2700. He was surprised because he said he hadn't had anyone tell him that before, no one usually knows about how many they are intaking.
Well, here's to hitting the weights hard now.
Oh and Jag, my shoulders already feel tremendously better from just two days icing. Thanks

Alright, due to the hectic combination of finals week and pre-graduation matters I have had to significantly alter my gym time. Thus the use of supersets...very heavy (as possible) supersets. I dare say I'm picking up some serious fat burning from it, and my muscle mass isn't suffering too badly. I highly recommend them in the weeks you're short on time.
One question...does anyone know any good boxing workouts?? I heard that is great cardio that can really fire up your definition and assist in firming up your muscle mass...

I'm a fanatic when it comes to cardio
Jump Rope (random time limits)
Jogging 2 miles(how ever long it takes)
Sationary Bike - 45-50
.....are my favorites
If I'm at the gym I'll hop on the Elliptical for awhile.
But its spread out through the week and broken down into different exercises that day depeding on my routine that day but its about 6 days a week.
..But my of regimen is for something different.
Just 45 minutes 4 days a week is a good fro just remaining thin.

I've been off and on because of an ailment and exams, not to mention work.
What I need is a kick@$$ regiment to get me back into the game. I don't care if it takes a slightly differenet diet, two weeks of rack chins, etc.
Just give me some ideas. And if Devil reads this.. I was never here! :ninja:

As for me, I'm happy to report that my boobies are still sore from my chest workout the other day. My bi's are still a bit sore as well (they tend to recover pretty quickly). Today I've got a hellacious legs & shoulders workout planned after work.

I did two cardio sessions today...
First I walked about 40 minutes real fast around Mirror Lake in town. Later I went and did some interval training on the spin bike and focused on technique. God my upper body hates being coerced back into good cycling form. I managed to do some curls afterward, but my gym buddy had to skedaddle home.
On top of it all the sparkpeople website has helped me keep my calorie intake down to between 1300-1500 every day. I'm eating plenty and feeling good minus all the excess fat and empty calories/carbs that I just don't need. Dinner tonight was mesquite lime chicken breast with a spinach salad on the side and some sourdough bread and olive oil. Mmm.

D Gray, do you have a fixed set of workouts or do you change it every week?
I re-worked my routine(s) because of constant nagging and worry from friends, fellow fighters(martial artist etc), and Personal trainers that i may burn out and really injure myself.
The lifting days have transformed into a all circuit training, abs, and isometric routine, 3 times a week Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and it remains a set plan with the exception I'll change ab routines around.
Monday Wednsday and Friday are planned and written down on Sunday when I take the day off. I'll mix up the workout to see what i want to do those particular days. Just to keep it interesting and challenging.
Martial arts classes are unavoidable..then there are training partners(from my
main style and other styles of fighting) that come over or when I'm at thier place that want to train/spar/grapple/etc.
Some still call it overtraining but it's alot better and more efficant(especially the weight training days) than it was before.
Some people are amazed I even have a social life but I utilize free time I have when noone is around instead fo planting myself in front of the TV to train.:word:

For weight loss, you want to burn ~500 calories per day more than you are taking in, so you need to plan your calories and cardio accordingly. Here's some more food for thought, though; muscle burns fat. It literally consumes fatty deposits for fuel and the more muscle, the higher your metabolism will boost up as a result. So, maybe dropping your weight training wasn't the best thing you could have done. Maybe consider bringing back your weight training and going back to one-a-days with your cardio and see if that brings you the results you're looking for.
jagYeah, my biggest problem right now is my diet, it was way too light to really help sustain my muscle growth and that's why I could feel my muscles taking almost a week to recover properly. This, and the fact that I will most liekly lose most of the muscle I put on in basic anyway is what made me decid to really stop lifting. But I can't do it. I've gone a week of just going to the gym to do cardio, but I just miss the actual lifting. I have always hated cardio, but enjoyed lifting weights and it's killin got go to the gym to only do somethign I hate.
I need to change my diet again, and i was thinking about the zig-zag diet. The one where I cut my calories down a pretty good amount for 3 days but then go back up to maintenace level for 1 or 2 days to keep my metabolism up. Do you or any of the others find anythign really wrong with this diet? I've never heard anythign really bad about it, but I don't anyone who's actually used it before either.
If that is right, which I doubt it is, but if you are burning 85-100% of your calories through cardio alone, you are burning too much.
In order to lose 1lb a week, all you need to do is cut out 500 calories from your diet, or burn an extra 500 calories a day for 5 days a week. So you don't need to burn all 1500-2000 calories that you are eating. That is over kill.
You don't want to over do it, and you should still weight train, just lower your weight and perform more sets 3-5 and higher reps 12-16.
I am sure Jag, Spoons, and Shadowboxing will either confirm or correct me. But that should be a good place to start.True, I figured I was overdoing it. I was actualyl burning that many calories in my cardio alone, but it was because I had such a light diet.
I wrote earlier about the new diet I am thinking of trying, I'd like to know what you think as well.

Overtraining is probably one of the easiest traps to fall into (I used to be ridiculous when I started out) and it's very difficult to drum it into yourself that it's counterproductive ie if you carry on pushing after a certain limit, you're reversing some of the gains you've made. Watch out for it, train hard and fast but always make you sure you eat enough (and the right kind of food) and get enough rest (which I don't think you always seem to get :yay:). Also I want to get back into martial arts asap. I've been too disorganised, lazy and busy to sort it out for the last year :csad:

My daily diet program is very strict I never eat anything that isn't benefical to me and I eat enough to keep me going(also combined with supplements, like protein drinks, vitamins and minerals.). As for over training, I know the draining effects that weight training leaves in it's wake so I limit it to 3 times a week and that's all I'll do that day, maybe abs and flexibilty training included.
It's my cardio/endurance and Martial Arts training that draws the most criticism. For the same reason you just mentioned, rest. Which I do get siffciant rest, evenings, sleep, all day Sunday....

It helps to know a lot of things to work on that will hone your technique when you're on the road. I went to a 5:45 AM spin class last fall but ended up quitting it because everyone seemed unfriendly and bitter at that hour and frankly I didn't want to deal with that first thing in the morning. I'll be spinning til I get my road bike in June. I'll mountain bike too but I never get a good cardio workout from it since I get slowed up on the technical stuff. :(

Hey. :)
I've been going to the gym about 5 times a week for the past week, I got a trainer and this is what I've been doing exercise wise:
Strength Training:
2 sets of 12 reps on chest press at 20lbs
2 sets of 12 reps on the lat pulldown at 40 lbs
3 sets of 10 reps on the horizontal leg press at 20 lbs*every other day*
4 sets of 10 reps on the standing glute press at 20 lbs*every other day*
2 sets of 12 reps on the bicep curl at 10 lbs
3 sets of 10 reps slowly on the abdominal bench
For cardio I do 45-50 minutes on two eliptical machines (split in two sets of 25 min)
I also been really trying to eat properly. I've been eating more salad, less bread and I've cut out cheese, except a little feta or goat cheese on occasion. For breakfast I usually have oatmeal with milk, honey and berries or a sliced bannana. Lunch is usualy dinner left overs. I'm seriously considering on making my own meals, and buying some groceries for my self because it can get difficult staying focused when you live with people who don't share the same attitude about their health!:cmad:
Do you think this will help me get proper results? Got any tips for me? Diet or exercse wise? I'd really apreciate it. :)

sassycat... with that kind of motivation and attitude i think it could totally work. i just started counting my calories and charting my fitness and i couldn't be happier with my recent diligence. part of it comes from the fact that i realllly want to enter in what i ate/accomplished at the gym on my online fitness tracker, part of it comes from wanting to be kickass on a roadbike when i finally bring it home.
what are your goals for getting in shape? mine are to drop 15-20 lbs (practically all i have to lose to be in SUPER shape-- that is racing shape) and to get really strong, especially core muscles through biking and lifting.

Focus on your workout today, whether it be spinning, weight training, distance running or what have you. No matter your goals, make today an effective and successful day by not pussing out on any set, minute of work or rep.

In other words. I did work son.
But what I really wanted to say is this. How do more people NOT get hurt at the gym? Holy crap I must have seen at least 10 different people using horrible, actually I can't even call it technique, sort of just move my body back and forth and wait for the weight to gain momentum then pull or push it as hard as I can.

yeah, about that' while at the gym i've noticed 2 ways to lift wheights:
some people do them really really fast, and i mean pumps, curls, rowing, fly, everything
and some do it slow and take their time
i generaly prefer to take my time with each move and do them right, doing them fast just seems like your using the momentum to lift for you
if i didn't get that right please let me know so i can ajust my routine acordingly :o:yay:

It helps to know a lot of things to work on that will hone your technique when you're on the road. I went to a 5:45 AM spin class last fall but ended up quitting it because everyone seemed unfriendly and bitter at that hour and frankly I didn't want to deal with that first thing in the morning. I'll be spinning til I get my road bike in June. I'll mountain bike too but I never get a good cardio workout from it since I get slowed up on the technical stuff. :(:wow: At 5.45am I'm not surprised everyone was in a bad mood! :woot:

thanksIn most cases yeah. Pro weightlifters use momentum to lift heavier weights but their goals are obviously different. I never do clean and jerk type movements myself but I'm not sure how easy they are to do without using momentum. With nearly all your regular resistance exercises in the gym, slow, smooth and controlled is the way to go

Changes come slowly, especially to you as you look at yourself, but if you keep it up within another month I'd wager you'll run into someone you haven't seen in a while (going back to school, or work or somthing) and they will comment on how buff/slim/good you're looking...

What is a BB bench press?
In any case, you don't always need clips on the bar while you are bench pressing. If you are benching by yourself...and the weight is too heavy..and there's no clips..you could just slide the weights off by tipping the bar. Or if you are doing burnouts, then you wouldn't put clips on.

Barbell.
Exactly the problem- the weights could slide off when you wouldn't want them to and you could hurt yourself or others. I ALWAYS use clamps...if you're by yourself, ask for a spot from someone else working out.

Lifting without clips is basically hoping and praying for an injury. Bad idea.
I'm switching up from the chest/bi's, legs/shoulders, back/tri's routine I've been running the last ~8 weeks to a more traditional push/pull routine of chest/tri's, legs/shoulders, back/tri's configuration this afternoon. I rode that other horse for all it was worth this stretch, but it's time to shake it up a little bit.

I've never done chest/bis and back/tris before.
I switch between the two different configurations every ~8 weeks or so, depending on how well the current approach is working for me. I work in a lot of periodization to keep the momentum going, switch up each week from 3x6 to 3x8 or 3x10 or even a 5x5 configuration, adjusting the weight accordingly. Keeps the muscle confusion just enough that I keep the progress moving forward.
The reason I use both is, with chest/tri's and back/bi's you get the benefits of pre-exhaustion of the secondary muscle group through the first part of the routine, which allows for direct and indirect work of the arms in the same routine. With chest/bi's and back/tri's, there is no pre-exhaustion so you can push yourself a lot harder on the arms in the same routine, and you also get the added benefit of getting direct work of the targeted muscle group in the arms on one day and then again indirectly later in the week. So, you are getting arm work done more than once a week, just by the nature of the routine. I still think the standard push/pull routines that take advantage of pre-exhaustion lend themselves to growth potential more than this other approach, but they compliment each other nicely to keep growth moving forward when you use them in conjunction like this.

hey jag, when is the best time to do cardio?
It really depends on why you're doing the cardio, to be honest. Depending on you goals, there are certain things you can do to maximize your cardio benefits and timing is one of them. The best standard, generalized answer I can give to that question is "Whenever you have time to do it".

Hmmm....give this a try:
ATG Squats: Warmup Weight 1 x 10, Warmup Weight 2 x 10, Working Weight 1 x 10, Working Weight 2 (add more weight) x 10, Working Weight 3 (add more weight) x 10, Widowmaker set of 20 reps at a weight you can just barely manage completing all 20 reps without re-racking the weight. Keep a bucket handy because you may feel like throwing up.
Free-Standing BB Calf Raises - These are simple. Put a couple of plates for you to stand on your tippy toes in the squat rack. Shoulder the bar just like you were going to do squats. Now get those toes up on the plates and crank out three sets of 20, free-standing in the cage. Feel your isolator muscles and calves screaming. Alternately, weighted Donkey Calf Raises
Super Set
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls
Move between each of these without any rest. Three sets of ten.

Thats not too bad for 3 miles, less than 7 minutes a mile. Actually, thats good-whats your age?
I'm 19. Well, I'll be 20 in a couple weeks.
My best 3 mile run ever was 19 minutes and 18 seconds, about 6 months ago or so.
But that was at boot camp, and you have a signifcant amount more motivation there.
Plus, I weighed about 165 pounds, just bone and muscle. And I'm 6'6". My senior drill instructor had us carb loading the two weeks before, too. And you're ridiculously hydrated when you're there.
I'm trying to get closer to that time again, but it's unlikely, now that I'm trying to put on more upper body weight and muscle, and I won't EVER weigh 165 again.
Ack. I looked like a skeleton.

Whoa, who told you to do that!?
Well, it all started back in high school weight lifting. We didn't always use clips. We did for maxing though. When we would do burnouts, we didn't use clips. The reason for that...well, here's an example.
Let's say some guy (not me) is doing 10+5+10+5+2.5 on the bench. You do 5 reps, then quickly take off the weight. With clips, it would take like...5-10 seconds every time to take them off, which is too much rest time for burning out. We did burnouts every now and then at the end of a day.
Some guy reminded me about using no clips. I use clips...like 98% of the time at the rec center.
Oh, yeah...our coach said so. But now I know he was wrong.

I made a kid cry on time and run into the stand to his mother, true story. Anyway, at the time I weighed a measly 185lbs and I wanted to get into the 200lbs weight class. 15lbs is a heap of weight to put on in a few months, so I decided to try something nobody else had done.....not poop. I ate and ate and held it all in. "How did you not poop, Spoons?" you may be wondering. With the help of a nifty invention called the manpon. What may look like a stack of napkins folded up was actually a scientifically proven way to up your weight in a pinch(pun unintended ;))
Long story short, after 6 months of not poopin, I packed on 15lbs and got to eat whatever I wanted. Too bad I lost at the Olympics :(

My goal is to drop to my ideal weight for my BMI which is 150, (I am so not there now :( ) , with a combination of sensible eating and exercise at the gym, pool and walking, I'd also like to start jogging/running when I lose the appropriate amount of weight to do so safely. :)

is it really true if you have a certin body shape/type, that I have to do certian things weather it be diet or exercises to avoid, to get the results I want? I have an hourglass/pear thing going on now. I hear ya Sassycat! I'm pretty curvy too and most people are really surprised when I tell them I weigh 150 right now. See! (http://a622.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/00832/12/65/832695621_l.jpg) I learned at a health fair back in college that I have a "large" skeleton and that it weighs a lot more. My goal is to be 130 and I'm really wondering if that's even possible. I'm already in good shape and with working out I'm dropping fat but gaining muscle mass. We'll see what happens.
I think though that we need to embrace the parts of ourselves that our destined to be... err... bigger. Like rear-ends. Even if you drop a lot of fat you may not be able to shrink your rear.

How do I get rid of that?

jaghaha...i used to do that too. That and about 2 minutes before weighing in, I would chug as much water/gatorade as humanly possible into myself, weigh in, and then go throw up like a ****ing geyser. Good times

Had a good chest/bi workout last night. There were only a couple of other people at the gym, so I superset all night, which was nice, I got out of there about 20 minutes earlier than when I have to wait. Got cardio and abs today, I'm going to kick up my abdominal workout a bit, as I think they are getting used to what I'm doing, time to trick the bastards.

I'm not weight training really hardcore right now but I am running, speedwalking and spinning... those are undoubtedly building muscle everywhere. It could also be that my metabolism is slow to get the ball rolling. I figure give it another week or two and the bits of fat will start coming of pretty consistently. That's how my body has worked in the past.

Yay, congrats!! Isn't it exciting when you can see changes in your clothes? I'm trying to gain weight and a lot of my clothes are too tight on me now, or they fit me much better. I think it's a great way to actually "notice" changes! :yay:

How'd it go? What did you think of the program I drew up for you? Think others might benefit from it? If you did those ATG Squats as advised, I can guarantee that tomorrow will be worse for you soreness wise. Something to look forward to for you, there. :D Do your cardio tonight and stretch out good and thorough afterwards and that should help. Especially if you're keeping your water intake up as instructed. The good news is that I'm hitting legs/shoulders tonight so I'll be good and sore tomorrow myself.

Went well, I think others would benefit from it if they choose the same 3 day lifting routine as me. Cardio is planned for tonight as is some Whey purchasing for post workout consumption. I also need a good protein shake... suggestions.

The workout is just icing on the cake. The real gold in what I wrote up is the some of the other stuff like basic principles behind achieving your goals, diet, supplementation, etc.

Glad to hear that. If there's anything that you'd like to see addressed in it that I didn't cover, let me know. And, if anything doesn't make very much sense or could be phrased better, let me know. What I tried to capture with this is all the basic, fundamental stuff that I never see really written out in a simple and easy to understand fashion. When I first really started getting back into lifting a couple years ago, I was starting from scratch and spent a lot of time on various lifting-oriented message boards reading and asking questions, as well as hunting down different articles. If I'd had something like this to start with, I would have saved myself at least a year's worth of flailing about and doing certain things inefficiently like I'd learned to do in high school and college. So, usability and understandability are the two main concerns I have with this running article.

How about some natural post-workout nutrition?
Not sure I follow. I think I mapped out the post-workout whey (and WMS or maltodextrin if you're so inclined) and specified having a full, balanced meal after that. What could I add or tweak to make that more easily followed?

I mean like natural foods, not supplements. Fruits, veg, rice, meat, etc.
Those are the things you want to get in your post-workout MEAL. When you first get done with your workout, though, your muscles are basically distressed and starving for nutrients. That's where a good whey supplement comes into play, because it's very quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and subsequently into the muscles where it can almost immediately start aiding in the repair and recovery process. More solid foods do not digest and absorb into the bloodstream nearly quickly enough to be relevant to your immediate post-workout needs like whey protein does. Think of PWO nutrition in stages:
Immediately: Whey protein to send nutrients to the muscles as fast as possible when they need it the most (the WMS protocol can be a step prior to this if you're following it).
Secondary: This is the full, balanced meal you would eat maybe 60 minutes after you've had your whey. The whey has had a chance to absorb and be utilized by the muscles a bit and by the time your food starts to digest and send nutrients into the bloodstream after you eat this regular meal, your muscles will be ready for the next round of nutrition.
I'll look at the article and see how I can make it read a little cleaner on this subject.

well, the nutrition helped out a heck of a lot, i just finished my schedule thanks mostly to that because i was still a bit confused about some foods
i had made a workout program already, here it is, i don't know if i posted it:
Monday: lower and upper back, abbs, triceps
Tuesday: cardio, chest shoulders and biceps
Wednesday: ower and upper back, abbs, triceps
Thursday: cardio, chest shoulders and biceps
Friday: lower and upper back, abbs, triceps
Saturday: cardio, chest shoulders and biceps
Sunday: Rest Day
now, what do i do for each group:
chest: butterfly: 3 reps; Machine Bench Press 3 reps
shoulders: shoulder press, on the machine 3 reps ; dumbbell thing where i lean on a wall and with my arm extended bring it up and down on the side, 3 reps
lower back: there's this machine, i donno what it's called so i'll describe it, it's like a chair with a small back and handles, and basicly i must push back until i'm horizontal, i can do preety big wheights on that, 3-4 sets
upper back: rowing machine 3 sets, pulldowns 3 sets, until now i did them to the back of my neck, from now on i'll do them in front though, and some lying on the bench thing i read about in mens health where i take a dumbbell and swing it around, i'll see if i can find a link
abbs: i just do simple abb exercises on the machine, 3 reps i ghess i need diversity here, so recomandations would help :)
triceps: triceps curls and some cable thingy i pull down on3 reps
biceps: curls 3reps on the machine.
for cardio i usually use the treadmill for 2Km but today it was easy so tomorow i'll probably try 2.5km if i can't cut it i'll go back to 2 and try starting next week :)
well, any opinions would help

Why only three reps of each exercise? Unless you're training for powerlifting, that's not enough. I'd bump that up to 6 reps at least.

Ahhh...okay....three sets of 12 is fine. I thought you meant you'd pick up the weight, do three repetitions of the exercise and then put the weight down and call that a set. That wouldn't be enough reps.

Yeah, you're basically hitting every muscle group three times a week, which is too much. You never get a chance to fully recover. Once is plenty if you do it with enough weight and intensity, though you can twice a week if you recover VERY fast. You're basically overtraining in a big way. You'd get better gains by cutting it back.

well, reading this thread i came across something about 3 times a week for a group being the maximum whitout overtraining (a thought tickles my brain for a couple of days, instread of using the word overtraining i'll use the word batmaning, i hope to get it into normal lingo in a war or two because i like how it sounds and i might've come across it a couple of times as batman overtraining in this thread when refering to some posters)
i guess i recover since in after a day's break i can hit it just as hard, but i'm sure that's probably not the standart to go by
my cardio is somewhat short as i seem to last 3 minutes on the step thing and about 5-8 on the eliptical so i chess i'm compensating with this.
if recovery has anything to do with my metabolical rate then i guess i recover verry fast, if not then i dunno
should i do it 2 times a week for every group(but then i'll hit it extra hard because it's a important thing for me at this point) and leave it at that? and is this massive overtraining or jsut a moderate amount?
and, should i do more cardio because i really need to lose fat on my abbs?, but i wouldn't want to affect my muscle gain while doing it
i know i must sound like some hiperactive noob or something in that ballpark

The point is that, by doing it three times a week, you aren't hitting it as absolutely hard as you possibly can every time you hit those muscle groups because you're still fatigued from the last time you hit them. Try bumping it back to twice a week and give yourself at LEAST three days of recovery time before hitting that muscle group again. Three times a week is way too many, IMHO.

The benefits of working your lower body are numerous (boosts testosterone production, spurs balance and growth among all body parts, and improves load-bearing ability, among many other things). You should really consider adding some leg work to your routine.
