i..went into panic mode :(
here's the new one:
Monday: lower and upper back, abbs, triceps
Tuesday: rest day
Wednesday: cardio, chest shoulders and biceps
Thursday: rest day
Friday: lower and upper back, abbs, triceps
Saturday: rest day
Sunday: cardio, chest shoulders and biceps
i think that should do it i guess
2 or 3 times a week is fine for lifting days..
When I would lift tradtionally before using the PHA system I would do it like this....
Tueday
Chest
Triceps
Shoulders
Abs
Thursday
Back
Biceps
Forearms
Abs
Saturday
Legs
Abs
You can even combine legs on you back/biceps/forearm days if you only want to hit the gym 2 days a week for lifting.

I don't know why I didn't catch that before. That's what happens when I'm on conference calls at work AND reading the boards.
The benefits of working your lower body are numerous (boosts testosterone production, spurs balance and growth among all body parts, and improves load-bearing ability, among many other things). You should really consider adding some leg work to your routine.

[open on panelists with theme music and title: "How Much Ya Bench?"]
[all panelists have heavily overdeveloped upper bodies]
Announcer: And now it's time for "How Much Ya Bench," with your host, Frankie Genovese.
[title is removed]
Frankie: Hello, and welcome to "How Much Ya Bench," the show dedicated to body building and a steroid-free power lifting experience. I think you know our panelists, especially if you are a Perth Amboy local, in which case you would also know that we enjoy a lifting experience that's completely free of steroid influence.
[other panelists agree while the shot widens to show that the panelists' legs are comically underdeveloped]
Frankie: Before we go to the phones, let's start off with a regular segment on "How Much Ya Bench?" called Movie Talk. This is where we have a steroid-free discussion of the movies. Tonight's topic: Hollywood's hot new actors and how much we want to kick their heads in. First up: Brad Pitt. He's becoming a big star. Do we like it?
Steroid User #1: My girl thinks he's really cute. And she says he was really good in "Thelma and Louise." So to be quite honest, I'd like to give him a savage beating. The kind of beating where the cops would say, "What kind of animal would do this to another human being?"
[other panelists agree with shouts and grunts]
Steroid User #2: Yeah! Brad Pitt needs a beatin'! He needs a beatin' Fast! I swear to God, I am not in the mood for him, ever!
Frankie: To sum up, I guess Brad Pitt gets a beatin'. Next up: Richard Grieco. The heat has faded, but he seems to still have that certain look on his face that needs to be wiped off. Agree?
Steroid User #1: Oh, my God, yes. I want to boot him so hard in the adam's apple it comes shooting out his mouth. Holy lord, when I used to watch him on "21 Jump Street," he would make me so angry it was like I was on steroids or something. That's how angry he made me.
Steroid User #2: Hey, Grieco, what's behind you? It's your worst nightmare, mister. Mr. Big-Time Beatin'! [punctuates the following with hand/arm gestures] Wham! Bam! Slam! Throat punch! Down you go! Oh, but it continues! Bam, bam, bam! Wham! When's it ever gonna stop?! Survey says: Not very soon!
[other panelists agree with shouts and grunts]
Steroid User #3: I can't follow his energy. However, I'd like to stress two things. Brad Pitt needs a beatin', and I'm not on steroids.
Steroid User #1: Very nice.
Steroid User #2: All right, yeah.
Steroid User #3: Mr. Pitt, if I ever see you, I'll give you so many rights, you'll be begging for lefts!
[other panelists agree with shouts and grunts]
Frankie: A beatin' all around. All right, finally: Charlie Sheen. Thoughts.
Steroid User #1: He's cool.
Steroid User #2: I like his work.
Steroid User #3: Laughed my ass off at "Hot Shots Part Deux."
Steroid User #4: Yeah, you know what? I'm on the fence. I could go either way with him.
Frankie: Shut up, gentlemen! The man needs a beatin'! He needs a good old-fashioned James Caan, "Godfather," garbage can involved monster beatin'!
[other panelists agree with shouts and grunts]
Frankie: All right. And let me say that what you've just seen was a display of normal male envy and agression, and in no way was the consequence of steroid abuse. Stay off the juice! The side effects aren't worth it. All right, before we take calls, I think someone here has an announcement to make.
Steroid User #1: Indeed I do. Just this last Friday at 2:23pm, I was benching and I put up 350 pounds.
[other panelists cheer him on with shouts and grunts]
Steroid User #2: You! You! Yeah! All right! You did it totally without the aid of steroids! Or steroid byproducts! You must be amped man! 350! Let's see that rip!
[Steroid User #1 flexes and turns, showing that his back is extremely hairy]
Steroid User #1: And I'm not even oiled up, gentlemen!
Frankie: Well, it's my guess we lost a few callers with that one. I'd like to thank those of you that hung in there. So let's get to your calls. Caller, you're on. How much ya bench?
Caller #1: 255. Steroid-free, just like you guys.
[panelists make girly ding-a-ling]
Steroid User #3: Tinkerbell! Tinkerbell! 255?! You calling to brag about that?! Anything else you want to brag about? Maybe how you got great seats for "Phantom of the Opera?"
Steroid User #2: Yeah! Or maybe how you got great seats for...some other queer play.
Steroid User #4: Now hang up the phone, all right, because there's a lot of other guys at the gay bar who need to use it, all right, you selfish bastard. God! I'm not on steroids!
Frankie: Okay, next caller. You're on the air. How much ya bench?
Caller #2: Hey, I don't really work out, okay. My question is for Steroid User #2.
Frankie: Hey, hey, hey, there's no one here on steroids, nancy-boy.
Caller #2: Uh, yeah. Steroid User #2. Could you tell me why your legs are so thin?
Steroid User #2: That's because I generally don't like to kick guys like you into a coma! I like to hear your bones snap under my fists!
Caller #2: Let me ask one more question. How do you guys ever get girls? I mean, do you have to hypnotize them or something?
Steroid User #4: Oh, no, no, no. You do.
[other panelists agree with shouts and grunts]
Steroid User #1: Hang up the phone, nancy-boy! Save your money for when you call 1-900-MAKE-OUT-WITH-A-GUY.
Frankie: All right, next caller. You're on. How much ya bench?
Charlie Sheen: Hey, steroid-boy. This is Charlie Sheen. You want a piece of me?
Frankie: Yeah! Where you at, pretty boy?
Charlie Sheen: You know where I live, Emilio. I'll be right here.
Frankie: Hey, Charlie. Come on, it's just a sketch.
Charlie Sheen: Oh, yeah? Well it's just a beatin'! Get ready for it! [hangs up]
Frankie: Oh, ah, um, next caller. How much ya bench?
Caller #3: Uh, not a tremendous amount. Hey, I lost a dog, and I was wondering if I could describe him in case a viewer has seen his.
Frankie: You got it, alpha woman. What's this poodle look like?
Caller #3: No, it's not a poodle. I don't know what kind it is, but I know it's definitely on steroids. It's real buff, with little stick-legs. And it's got this weird forehead, real hairy back and shoulders with tons of zits. It goes through crazy mood swings, and it answers to "loser."
Steroid User #4: Oh, my God, Frankie! There ain't no dog! This guy's referring to us! Oh, I can't stand it! Oh, my God! I want a piece of this guy! Oh, God, please, God, I gotta give this guy a beatin'! [sobs]
Steroid User #2: You will pay, nancy-boy! Oh, it's coming! You hear me?! [with arms and legs flailing] Oh, God, you are gonna pay! One sorry nancy-boy!
Frankie: We're gonna find out where you live, and you're dead! Everybody else, tune in next week to "How Much Ya Bench?"
[dissolve to advertizement screen]
Announcer: "How Much Ya Bench?" has been brought to you by Jim Tischer's Anabolic Steroids. For when you want big mass and got no time. Turn to the juice. Jim Tischer's juice.
[dissolve to panelists with theme song and title: "How Much Ya Bench?"]

Hmmm....give this a try:
ATG Squats: Warmup Weight 1 x 10, Warmup Weight 2 x 10, Working Weight 1 x 10, Working Weight 2 (add more weight) x 10, Working Weight 3 (add more weight) x 10, Widowmaker set of 20 reps at a weight you can just barely manage completing all 20 reps without re-racking the weight. Keep a bucket handy because you may feel like throwing up.
Got up to the widowmakers and feared for my legs. I'll get them in next time I try this, for sure.
Free-Standing BB Calf Raises - These are simple. Put a couple of plates for you to stand on your tippy toes in the squat rack. Shoulder the bar just like you were going to do squats. Now get those toes up on the plates and crank out three sets of 20, free-standing in the cage. Feel your isolator muscles and calves screaming. Alternately, weighted Donkey Calf Raises
Whooo. I was thinkin at first "Why not put some weight on the bar"....wrong! When I got to the 16th rep of the first set, muscles in my calf started to burn that I didn't know existed.
Super Set
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls
Move between each of these without any rest. Three sets of ten.
I these would be the easiest...wrong! These killed my quads and hammies. Sunova!
Throw in shoulders after that if you're able to. Have fun cursing me the next three days. :D

I was only able to do reverse flys and shrugs before having to leave the gym b/c I was already there for too long. Thanks a lot Jag, my legs def got a shock yesterday. Cardio should be fun in a few hours lol.

Did work this morning.
Even though I pretty much hate cardio anyway, I REALLY hate it after a legs day.
But the good news is that this week I have averaged a loss of 3-5 lbs of sweat during my cardio. Sure I gain most of it back when I drink water, but it's a good measurement of intensity.

CyberFaust Vs Dorian Gray for Overtrainer of the year 2007  :woot:
CyberFaust has me beat...:woot:
Like I said before it's my cardio/endurance and martial arts training that gets questioned, never my lifting. I've always kept lifting days to 2 or 3 times a week..
With my new Personal Trainer advised PHA System lifting program I actually cut my time for cardio/endurance training. I still like wailing on the heavy bag, speed bag, various target pads, practicing my forms, techniques and so forth on my off days. But it's all been cut in half...my last interval training program was only 23 minutes..
My training is actualy a healthy medium now....

who's tthe man? who's the man?
:(
here's a good question for you guys, so, i was reding labels at the supermarket today, yada yada yada...and when i look at calories i am confused, let's take natural fruit juice, that has, in one case 30kcal/100g ....does this mean 30000 calories/100g or am i wrong, i mean, my daily intake should be about 2000 judging from that counter on bodybuilding.com
so, my question is, how many calories does one kcal have?
and, if everything has so much, how am i suposed to eat just a few a day? :(
this has been a wierd day
jaguarr

kcal = a kilocalorie.
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci771826,00.html
In short, no, 30kcal's does not equal 30000 calories.

I believe it's the other way around: 1,000 kcal's = 1 calorie.
There's no way in hell a bottle of juice would have 30000 calories in it. I eat all day long and the MOST I've ever consumed in a single day was ~6,000 calories and that was by eating pretty unhealthy junk non-stop most of the day. I'm at a steady 3500 calories per day right now and I still eat all day long (clean, healthy foods, only). A bottle of juice isn't going to have that many calories, bottom line.

CyberFaust
05-18-2007, 12:13 PM
ohhh, not a bottle, 100g a bottle is 1000grames :D
it really is confusing, chips have about 500kcal for every 100 grames, and if takes as thousands of calories it means 500.000 calories, that's why it confuses me
anyway, the diet bit of your advice is printed and glued on my fridge door so i'm doing my best to eat healthy and often
also, i noticed that popcorn is mostly protein and carbs, does that mean i can have it as a snack?
maybe one kilocalorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water with one kelvin, not one celsius or somethin'
jaguarr

It'll add some additional carbs more than anything. If you're eating it with any salt and butter or a pre-made microwave kind that's covered in butter and salty chemicals then the sodium/fat profile is going to be detrimental to your goals. Plain, air-popped popcorn...yeah, you could probably get away with that as a snack.

I have no idea because I don't know what exercises you are doing for each routine and what your diet, rest and supplementation regimens are going to look like. On first glance, I'd say you'd be overtraining, especially if you plan to work legs every day. I also have no idea what your goals are or what you're trying to accomplish with your workouts or what your current state of fitness and experience with weight training is.

Ok, so I'm 17 and trying to qualify for the 2003 Olympics. I knew I could take most of the guys in my weight class, considering how badly I owned everybody at my high school. I made a kid cry on time and run into the stand to his mother, true story. Anyway, at the time I weighed a measly 185lbs and I wanted to get into the 200lbs weight class. 15lbs is a heap of weight to put on in a few months, so I decided to try something nobody else had done.....not poop. I ate and ate and held it all in. "How did you not poop, Spoons?" you may be wondering. With the help of a nifty invention called the manpon. What may look like a stack of napkins folded up was actually a scientifically proven way to up your weight in a pinch(pun unintended ;))
Long story short, after 6 months of not poopin, I packed on 15lbs and got to eat whatever I wanted. Too bad I lost at the Olympics :(

That's a good functional strength workout, actually. Do watch your shoulders on it, but otherwise, have fun. Have someone light the bottom of the rope on fire when you're about 1/4 of the way up it for added motivation.

The benefits of working your lower body are numerous (boosts testosterone production, spurs balance and growth among all body parts, and improves load-bearing ability, among many other things). You should really consider adding some leg work to your routine.

Hey Jag how do you feel about rope climbing? You know like they used to make kids do in gym class.
I used to do it when I was younger and could make it easily all the way to the top of a 20ft + ceiling. But I'm curious as to how effective a workout it is and how good or bad it is on your shoulders.
I know you didnt ask me, but rope climbing is a kick ass workout. I have a 2" manila one in the tree outside (about 20' up). Great for all pulling muscles and grip strength.

First of all, be careful with those "protein bars" and the like. Many have a bunch of sugar, HFCS, fat and other ingredients that make them not as valuable as you might think.
However, assuming you find a good one-before a workout or as a snack are good ideas.

4.5g total fat.
3.5g saturated fat.
0 Tran fat.
0g sugar

well, i had 4 days break, not by choice mind you so today i hit it hard, my pre-workout run is now a mile instead of 1Km and it's a little faster, also, i noticed that the right music dorring a run gets your mind off of the pain and numbness in the legs
so, legs...decided to divide them in 2 bits, the front bin and the back bit, because this was lower and upper back and abbs day, i threw in the back side of my legs, it felt good and by that i mean it hurts
and now these bits of my body get 2 days rest

question:
is it okay to lose a pound a day?
1-2 pounds per WEEK of fat loss is healthy. Anything more than that isn't healthy and is probably largely water weight. My weight fluctuates by 5+ pounds throughout the day because of the water and food I take in during the day, anyway. I weigh much less in the mornings than I do in the evenings.

i take it you have to lose the water weight before you fan lose the fat?
is it possible to have more than 10 pounds of water weight?
jaguarr

No, you don't have to lose water weight before you lose fat. And you could have ten pounds of water weight you could shed if you had enough mass. The body is like ~70% water, depending on your age and health.

A couple of thoughts:
The first is, that change like this happens slowly and you don't really notice it when you see yourself day to day. The mirror also doesn't really give you an accurate representation of what's going on. One way to track your progress is to take monthly progress photos. I bet you'll see the progress from month to month if you compare photos from each month previous side by side.
The second is that you are surely converting some of that fat to muscle, which can mean slower looking reductions in size if you're very overweight, even though you're really dropping fat and firming up underneath that top layer. Also, the same square inch of muscle is going to weigh a lot more than the square inch of fat that it used to be, because it's denser. So, the scale can be a big trap for people trying to lose weight because they may not lose as much actual weight as they think they should be even though they are dropping the fat they ought to be and converting it to muscle.
The third is, you didn't get overweight overnight. It's not going to come off overnight, either. Be patient and stick to your guns. You're obviously making great progress to have dropped 21 pounds, so keep up the hard work and keep at it.

Farmers walks. Go as heavy as you can without straps on deadlifts and shrugs. Do weighted hangs from a chin-up bar (hang until you can't hold on anymore). And check out the Captains Of Crush Website (http://www.ironmind.com/ironcms/export/IronMind/Main/captainsofcrush1.html).

Agreed.
Also, drape a towel over a pullup bar and do pullups with it (or a thick rope).
Also, fat grips, use fat grip bars for any movement. If you dont have any fat bars, wrap a towel around them (you could do this for shrugs, deadlifts, etc etc).
Along w/ captains of crush, I recommend this website also.

i started hitting the gym a few months ago
i go 3-4 times a week during the week and i take the weekends off
day 1: minimum 30 minutes on the elliptical at an average of 55rpm, upper back (45lb), chest press (60lb), shoulders - free weights (7.5lb per arm), triceps - pulldown (22.5lb total), abs - machine (45lb), crunches (three sets of 75 or more on a mat because the ball hurt my back)
day 2: elliptical again, lower back (120lb), leg press (105lb), hamstrings (60lb), hip abductors - inner (60lb), hip abductors - outer (50lb)
day 3: 45-50 minutes on the elliptical, or maybe 15 minutes of jogging and half an hour on the elliptical
day 4: everything from days 1 and 2
if i skip a day, i skip day 3 obviously.
i feel like my progress on the machines has been pretty slow. if i go up in weight i always lose my form, but i've been doing these weights for like three weeks now and my boyfriend says i should do biceps if i'm doing triceps for balance or something.
any suggestions?
eta: oh, and on the machines i usually do 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps. i'm not looking to build of course, i'm just looking for tone.

Turn up the intensity through various things-more weight, more reps, less rest, etc.
Also, is the routine listed what you do everytime you hit the gym? If so, it is past time to change it up, get busy with some new movements. Dont be afraid of free weights or bodyweight exercises-IMO you will see results quicker with them than any machine.

There are a lot of ways to approach weight training, depending on your goals. Let me disspell the myth for you right now that women who lift heavy weights turn into freakish She-Hulks. The only way that will happen is if you start eating like a horse and injecting anabolic steroids. What this means is that women can take advantage of heavier free weight training and more traditional weight-lifting splits to accomplish their goals of firming up and toning and their bodies will react naturally. It's much harder for women to build much muscle mass because of their natural testosterone levels being so much lower than men's on average. The muscle women build tends to be the lean, "toned" kind that you're after. The other beautiful thing about adding that muscle is that muscle burns fat. The more muscle you add, the more fat it's going to burn.
So, the first thing I would advise is dropping down to more around the three sets of ten to twelve repetitions range and raising your weight up a bit more. We could also probably construct your workouts to be a little more productive. Something like this:
day 1:
Warm up on elliptical for 10 minutes
Chest press
triceps - pulldown
shoulders - free weights (would help to know what exercise you're doing here)
abs - machine
crunches
30-45 minutes on the elliptical at an average of 55rpm
day 2:
Warm up on elliptical for 10 minutes
leg press
hamstrings
hip abductors - inner
hip abductors - outer
crunches
30-45 minutes on the elliptical at an average of 55rpm
day 3:
upper back
lower back
Dumbbell Bicep Curls
Concentration Bicep Curls
Crunches
30-45 minutes on the elliptical at an average of 55rpm
day 4: Cardio only - 45-60 minutes
This is more of a traditional three day split, with the exercises in preferred order so that they build upon each other in terms of pre-exhaustion. It would be a more balanced workout approach and maximize the time you spend lifting. You could also throw a couple more days of cardio in there if you wanted to, preferably taking a day off inbetween each weight-training session to just do cardio so your body has more time to heal up between weight lifting sessions. Give that a try for a bit and let me know if it spurs some progress for you. The other thing we'd need to look at is your diet, which is going to be 90% of your success.

I like to keep things simple and quick in the gym because I don't want people talking with me, over and again, while I work out.

I actually fell to the side and pulled a muscle in my back. The only thing he said was "oh ****, thank god for those rubber mats huh?" whatever the **** that means.
He then goes on to the pullup assist machine, puts the weight at about 120, and proceeds to use it like a pushup. The padded seat that you are supposed to put your knees on, he just puts his hands on an just pushes it down in a pushup position.
God I was so pissed, and I still am. Luckily though it was my last set for the day so I got my whole workout in.

anyhow, good chest+bi+frunt bit of legs workout
also cardio day today, i did 2 miles in 17 minutes...this is a big step up from 2 km and i'm keeping the speed as is
i gotta give it to jag, now with 2 days between the same muscle group i really can do a heavier lift session

I don't know if anyone can really answer this question, but I'll give it a shot. Is it still possible to build muscle when you have had a kidney transplant. I had a transplant when I was 17, and have to take medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and have to avoid fat, cholesterol and sodium as much as I can, so I'm wondering if I can build muscle or should just stick to being in good shape.

No reason you shouldn't be able to, really. You probably have to be careful about your diet, especially with protein intake, but there's no reason you can't build muscle. It's worth talking with your doc about.

Question concerning healthy eating.
I've recently landed a job with a 5-11 shift monday to friday. I need to leave the house at 4 to get to work. This means that it is not practical to have dinner before I go to work, and when I get back home I'm having dinner at like half 11 or half 12.
I read somewhere or saw somewhere that apparently you should avoid eating after 8 o'clock as your kidneys or something like switch off at night, and won't digest your food till the next day, making you fatter. Or something.

it's not really my basement... it's a hallway, 2 dining rooms, and a living room
and no it doesn't... I plug in a boom box, put in any kind of music, and then I just mix up the combination of exercise every once in a while so it stays interesting... It also helps to listen to some fast paced music, so you can either walk or jog to it.

Well, I may be wrong, but I believe thae whole idea of not eating after 8 is basically meant for those on the normal sleep cycle. With a job like that, you aren't on a normal sleep cycle so it changes for you. Instead, try not to think of exact hours you should/shouldn't eat, but somethign more like "don't eat with less than 3-4 hours before you go to bed".
Although, I'm sure someone knows a hell of a lot more about htis than me.

Your kidneys don't shut down while you sleep. You body keeps digesting, even when you're asleep, which is why so many bodybuilders are prone to eating slow digesting proteins like cottage cheese before bedtime; to keep their bodies from going catabolic. What DOES happen while you are sleeping is that the digestive process runs a little slower and you are pretty much not burning any calories, so if you go to bed with a full stomach it's not going to convert to fuel, because your body doesn't need fuel at that moment. It's sleeping. So it converts the food to fuel it can use later, i.e. fat. That's how I understand it in the broadest of laymen's terms.

carbs, fruits, bulk of your meals, etc should be eaten in the early part of the day.
Depending on when you work out, your diet should reflect your workout and sleep schedule.
Like Jag said, it turns to fat. My day is pretty much finished by the time I get home from the gym. I immedialtely drink a protein shake, and an hour or so after that I am eating a meal: fish, chicken, lean beef, with veggies.. loads of 'em.

Wait,what? Why is this?
Heavy, more intense stretching like the kind most people get taught in school stretches the muscles, ligaments and tendons, thereby reducing their elasticity weakening them for a short time (roughly 60-120 minutes). When you engage in heavy training, be it power walking, running, weight training, whatever, not having the full elasticity of those muscles, ligaments and tendons means that their recoil ability and timing is impacted, which makes it likelier that they won't react as quickly as you're used to or need them to, thereby increasing the risk of injury. It's better to do some LIGHT stretching and joint movements and maybe some light cardio of some kind to warm the body up and get the blood flowing to the limbs so that they'll have maximum reflex ability for your sport or workout without being compromised by being pre-stretched. Stretching AFTER you finish your workout will help the muscles, tendons and ligaments retain their elasticity and keep them supple as well as pull blood into them to help them heal faster and more completely.

So... how would that work out?
I should stay up, eat, and workout before bed?
It depends when your workout is.
I workout after work: 5ish.
My diet consists of breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, protein shake after workout, dinner.
I most of my cards are eaten earlier in the day. At the latest my last bit of carbs are right before I workout. The protein shake is mixed with water; so, hopefully, I am getting mostly protein and less fat.
My dinner is usually between 7 and 8. I eat fish, chicken, or lean beef with loads of green veggies. Then my diet schedule is over. If I get hungry before bed, I try and eat straight protein or veggies.
However, you should fashion your workout to your schedule. And like I said before, when I mentioned Mrvlknight21, his schedule is sometimes flipped around from day to night. Just because the sun is down, doesn't mean Mrvl can't eat and/or workout. Moreover, I bet he doesn't eat heavy right before he goes home. In the same way I, or anyone else on a similar schedule, don't eat heavy after 7.

Well, it's hard to answer this for you without knowing your goals, current fitness level, how often you work out, your rep/set scheme, what your diet looks like, whether you're doing cardio or not, if you are taking any supplementation, how much rest you're able to get and whether you have any nagging injuries or pre-existing health conditions. :hyper:

That is correct. Also, keep in mind days/nights that I work I am usually awake 19-20 hours. So those days I end up taking in a lot of meals. When I say meals, I dont mean a plate full of pasta, 2 burgers, banana pudding and texas toast at one sitting either. However, I taper it off near the end of the day, as Storm said (unless I work out late in the day).

BF measurement is a black art. Omron makes some electronic measurement gear for it but it's not very reliable. The best way is to do the flotation tank measurement, but that's not very practical. Calipers are probably the most reliable way to do it. Whatever you do, once you select a method and instrument, stick with it because if you jump from method to method or even from instrument to instrument you're going to get all kinds of different readings.

Do you belong to a gym? Most PT's at gyms have calipers and know how to use them (at least, sort of). Ask one of them to take your BF measurement. They might charge you if they're greedy a-holes.

I learned to rough guesstimate by just knowing people or seeing pics of people who had formal BF% measurements. Over time you get a general idea just by looking at a person but that's really prone to error and misjudgment.

Have a gander at this... from bodybuilding.com this is the diet for 216lbs. at 16% BF
If you workout hard, follow these guidelines:
3271 calories per day.
247 grams of protein per day.
329 grams of carbs per day.
107 grams of fat per day.
Split these up into 6 equal meals daily. This would mean that you would take in the following at EACH meal:
545 calories per meal.
41 grams of protein per meal.
55 grams of carbs per meal.
18 grams of fat per meal.
If you don't workout hard, follow these guidelines:
1851 calories per day.
165 grams of protein per day.
219 grams of carbs per day.
35 grams of fat per day.
Split these up into 6 equal meals daily. This would mean that you would take in the following at EACH meal:
309 calories per meal.
27 grams of protein per meal.
37 grams of carbs per meal.
6 grams of fat per meal.
However I don't know what category I fall into. I don't think I kill myself in the gym enough to warrant the first but I don't think I puss out enough for the second... hence my dilemma.

Not really. Are you tracking your diet in fitday.com? Have you figured out your appropriate caloric intake for your weight, age and fitness level? Have you split out your macronutrients to 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% Essential Fatty Acids? What are you eating, specifically? When are you eating it? How many meals? How many calories per meal? If you can't answer all of those questions (and fitday can help you answer all of those), then you need to fix your diet.

Depends more on your goals. You're wanting to add muscle, so the higher number of 3271 is probably more appropriate. I'm 5'6" and 198 (hey, I dropped a little BF recently! :D ) and still pulling down 3500-4000 calories per day, depending on my activity level.

me: so, i was at the gym today.
george constanza: *chewing a egg salad sandwich* yeah, so? how's that working for you?
me: you wouldn't believe what happened today!
george constanza: really, what? did a barbell fall on a guy's neck?
me: what, no!
george constanza: oh... :(
me: will you let me tell you already
george constanza: *with his mouth full of egg salad* ok, ok, what happened?
me: well, i was doing my exercises, the day finaly came to up the wheights on the machines from my prevoius workouts...again. So, anyway, i finish my 2 mile warmup run, do my abbas and lower back exercises, some triceps, some upper back, and then i go to the benches to do some finish up my upper back exercises and triceps.
george constanza: can we get to it already?
me: yeah yeah yeah, so i go there, i wait for a bench to clear, it was fast, i set it flat, put my towel on it, get some dumbbells lay on it and start doing some back exercises i read about in men's health, and i really like those exercises because i've been doing them for 2 weeks or so now and they really make my whole shoulder and back area feel really good and i can feel the muscles sturuggling with the exercise, and i can see them in the mirror too, it's in fact the only exercise so far i've seen some of those secondary muscle group thingys working out with. So, this guy in a orange shirt and a sparkly tight speedo comes up to me and asks me just what the hell i'm doing
george constanza: what?!?!
me: yeah! so i explain to him what the exercise is, and where i learned it from, and what it does
george constanza: and?
me: and he tell's me it looks stupid!
george constanza: waht, in the gym, just like that!
me: yeah! so i tell him whatever, i can do wahtever i want, i thank him for the advice politely and tell him i'll take it into consideration and get on with my exercises. And he leaves.
So i finish those exsercises and set the bench up straight to do some triceps extentions, and i get on with it. AND HE COMES BACK!
george constanza: that is some nerve!
me: yeah! and he tells me that i shouldn't be doing those kinds of extentions and that i would get biggger gains with some other kinds and offers to show me. So i tell him i know other ways and i'm doing these ones, now will he please let me get on with my workout.
And he gives me this look!
george constanza: he gave you a look?!?!?!
me: HE GIVES ME A LOOK! like i'm some retard and walks away.
I was really pissed by the end of all of this, i finish my workout early and go home. I am still really pissed about it:cmad:, i mean i was doing wheights 3-4 times bigger than he was. I'm sure it was well meant but i do not take advice from men in sparkly speedos!
I tried to find the article with the back thing i was doing on the site so i could post it but i couldn't find it again :(
He did however shake my confidence in the exercise and if i can't find it i'll draw some stick figures to explain it because i want your advice.

I had one of these nimrods try to do that to me when I was doing deadlifts at a World Gym one time when I was traveling for business. He told me that was the most dangerous lift in the world and it will only weaken my back muscles. I laughed at him and told him to get away from me before I removed his spleen. Loudly. Everyone in the gym laughed at him because I'd been watching him do this crap to everyone else in the gym before he got to me. They were annoyed with him as much as I was. The little weasel then went to the squat rack and started doing curls in it. I immediately went over to it and told him to move because I wanted to do squats in the SQUAT rack. He threw a hissy fit but moved. I ramped up a couple sets of really heavy squats and then went over to the pulldown machine and told him to move. He then left the buliding. :D

Oh right.
I'm not sure that any specific weightlifting exercises are preferable over others in terms of achieving weight loss. Generally doing resistance exercise and increasing muscle mass is the trigger that leads to a more efficent metabolism that will burn more fat while you're inactive. Aside from that it's about looking at your calorie intake and comparing with how much you need/burn and setting yourself long term targets. Come up with a weightlifting program according to your goals and keep up the cardio.

Ever tried a Glucosamine/MSM supplementation, squeek? It's done wonders for my neck and shoulder joint issues.

Their bones lose density as they get older and this leads to a lot of similar problems. :csad:
Hope it goes well.
