Expensive? I get a bottle of 240 caps for $23. And it's not a drug, it's natural therapy. At any rate, it works well for me and a lot of other folks I know. If you know it doesn't work for you, not much sense in trying it I suppose. :)

LOL, I doubt that. It costs roughly $54 a month for a suppliment (Osteo BiFlex) without them being on sale and quite frankly, I dislike the idea of having to take something 3 times a day. I am likely to forget and then I wouldn't be doing myself any good. My grandmother has the same arthritis in her hips, she took them and they didn't help her at all. It could be the particular joint, my dad said it helped his knee.

Today it begins. I feel a little like Rocky. After not having the best dinner's Sunday, Mon, Tues, and Wed, I rebounded with a good clean dinner, though I had too much deli wheat bread yesterday with it.

The point is there's a 3-on-3 basketball extravganza on August 18th. I want to be in it (of course, living in Hurricane ally can easily ruin this). Come Monday...my workout will be different, as I rather get a six-pack...then put on muscle. I'm sure I'll have one cheat day though before this one-day basketball extravganza starts (I imagine I have something for July 4th). At first I was gonna have 2-3 donuts on the day the new Die Hard film comes out...but that's really close to July 4th, so I'm sure six pack or no six pack, I'll save the donuts for later date in the year.

But even with the training, I have no job (poor hours at last job after *new* management took over) so...it's not a sure thing I'll have the money for registration. Oh, and just found out no cookout plans for July 4th. Oooooooh, looks like 2 1/2 months of clean eating. I just have to remember...eat right...six-pack and basketball thing.

So I saved the really hot girl at the gym from possibly injuring herself badly this morning while working out.

I went into the freeweights room and she was on teh smith machine. As I walked by I noticed she was shaking like crazy, so I looked up at her face and saw her eyes closed and dripping sweat and pale, never a good combination in my book. Luckily I was close enough where I caught her as she collapsed and the weight was light enough where I could hold onto it long enough to lock it out.

Luckily she was okay (just screwed up majorly on her diet today) and every other guy at the gym jokingly hates me for actually having her talk to me now. I recieved the title "lucky bastard" and am damn proud of it.

OK it is rant time! I usually train at home or at work. But a friend recently got a membership at a popular gym that had recently expanded and asked me to come with him. They had an advertisement that said they were offering 1 month memberships for free, no strings attached. I went last night and they said that I couldnt get the month free since I was a member there in 1998 (they have since changed ownership once and expanded twice). They allowed me to work out there last night for free. (so much for no strings attached)!

So I am looking around this huge gym with a ton of hammer strength equipment and very little free weights. Also, a waterfall, 3 leather couches and a 50" plasma TV in the lobby.

My friend tells me to check out the men's locker room. Surprisingly I saw the same 3 leather couches, another plasma TV, also marble floors in the showers and counters and a POOL TABLE. WTF! Why do they need a pool table in the locker room of a fitness center?!?!!?!?!?
WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF!

hey water weight, fat weight, whatever it is, I'm a pound lighter, and that makes me very happy.

The thing with water weight is that it can fluctuate wildly during the day. I usually weigh 5-7 pounds more in the evenings than I do in the mornings, for example. Don't get too overly fixated on the numbers on your scale. Go by what you see in the mirror, what the tape measure tells you and how you feel. As you walk, you're not just burning fat you're also building your leg and back muscles and your cardiovascular system. What you have to keep in mind is that a square inch of muscle weighs more than a square inch of fat, so you may be dropping fat but not losing weight. Keep focused and stay on your course. I think that, now we've got your diet fixed, you're going to start seeing some more great progress.

I live in a college town: University of Georgia. So, of course, there are other schools here for the kids who couldn't get into UGA. And, unlike UGA, said schools are not large enough to have an oncampus gym.

So, my gym consists of the "other" students in Athens, and like you said, they disappear for the summer.

Which doesn't make much sense to me. These kids drink like a fish, eat out all the time, and workout hard all year so they look teh sexy for that one beach trip for the summer.

I miss my home gym where people actually worked out. Now all I get is carbon copied blondes, wearing matching outfits, trying to look cute, so said frat boy might ask them to get drunk later.

I still get weird lookks when I do my "Jag workout."

I prefer long term strategy. Obviously it's possible to move the weight much more quickly but the longer it takes to come off the longer it stays off (in theory :csad:).

I disagree. Unless said person is completely overweight, then give me 24 weeks and I will show said person major results.

I imagine you have a large bone structure. If so, then you are incorrect, IMO.

Your goal should be 175ish, maybe a little less. I don't know.

I am 5'5" and weight 175, a little fat and a lot of muscle. Jag is a little bit taller than me, and I would think his ration is about the same.

Like I said above, for what you want, I think 175 is a great goal.

Serously, man, I am shorter than you, and I would not dream of 125.

Once you burn off the fat, and build muscle your body will almost play tricks on you. For example, you see that you are losing weight, but the scale says otherwise. That is becaus of muscle.

I'd agree, 125-150 is very low. I'd look at clocking it at 165-175 if I was karot, since I know he really doesn't want to build a lot of muscle. At 5'6" I'm running ~198 right now. I was up to 205 for awhile, but I've dropped some bodyfat the last couple of months.

Cheese did it all on his own. However, his height is much different that Kak's.

Kak needs to focus on a higher weight loss, I think.

A guy that is 275, 5'7", should not lose that much weight.

And like I said in my last post, 125-150 is insane. I WOULD NOT want that much loss.

My current is 175. My goal is fifteen pounds. However, with my body structure, it would not surprise me if I ended up 165ish and leaner. I think Kak's situation is similar.

well this one feels like less, but i don't think i would have had the time at this point to hit it EVERY day hard, because i have some exams in a month, i don't whimp out on any sets, and to cut some time on the workout i usually do 2 sets without break, like this:
let's say today, shoulders and leg extentions, i do one shoulder press set and then do one leg extension set, and then one shoulder press set, and then one leg extension set) no time-outs except for about 1 minute or so, i do give myself 5 minutes after cardio to stop my head from spinning.

but i've been told people see the difference, and now my shirts are tighter on my shoulders arms and chest so i'm happy about that, still no sign of my abbs though, i suppose monday i'll take the cardio up from 2 miles up to 2.5 and add a 10% incline, same speed, 7mph :D

You can do that, but be prepared to see some of your muscle mass drop off along with the fat and also be prepared to see your lifting capacity drop a bit as well since your glycogen stores will be depleted more often.

For you, no. Keep it consistent. I do something kind of funky with carb cycling on non-lift days where I lower my carb intake a bit. It's not necessary with what you're doing, though. Just keep it at the 3271.

How do you eat so much?

I just ate lunch, slightly light because I am about work out. But, even still, even if this was a regular day, and I was home, from work, eating lunch, all I would eat would a sanwich with a peice of fruit, drink a V8, and that is it.

There is no way all of that is 1000 calories.. is there?

We have to be on entirely different eating habits.

Breakfast and lunch are always ~1000 calories (and no, I don't eat crap). I sprinkle lower calorie meals inbetween and then dinner is somewhat light on workout days since I workout in the evenings or a little bit larger on non-workout days. Wanna get big? Gotta eat big. Cardio helps keep me from becoming a fatty and keeps me hungry.

Nope.. don't want to get big.

I eat heavy throughout the day as well. After workouts, it's a protein shake and light dinner for me.

Actually, I've been working on trimming some of the excess bodyfat from the continuous bulk that I've been on. I do it VERY slowly, though, trying to preserve as much muscle as I can while I'm at it. The other thing that sucks for me is that the stuff they've got me on for my low testosterone causes a bit of belly bloat for me. I'm looking forward to when they'll be able to switch me off of it to some other stuff that hopefully won't give me that issue.

Medication that causes ****e like that sucks.

I took acne pills a fews years back(don't ask me why I got acne at 22 rather than 12), and the pills sped up my metabolism. I ate fast food at least three times a week and I still lost weight.

Devil's like me in that regard. He'd rather just have all the gear at home to use. If The Devil had a higher propensity for evil and debauchery, he'd be me. :)

I think that, now we've got your diet fixed, you're going to start seeing some more great progress.

well this one feels like less, but i don't think i would have had the time at this point to hit it EVERY day hard, because i have some exams in a month, i don't whimp out on any sets, and to cut some time on the workout i usually do 2 sets without break, like this:
let's say today, shoulders and leg extentions, i do one shoulder press set and then do one leg extension set, and then one shoulder press set, and then one leg extension set) no time-outs except for about 1 minute or so, i do give myself 5 minutes after cardio to stop my head from spinning.

but i've been told people see the difference, and now my shirts are tighter on my shoulders arms and chest so i'm happy about that, still no sign of my abbs though, i suppose monday i'll take the cardio up from 2 miles up to 2.5 and add a 10% incline, same speed, 7mph Exams can F with routines. :(
From what you're doing it sounds like including the leg extensions will probably have some negative effect on the other exercises as you won't be able to put as much into them as you would minus the leg extensions. Do whatever you can while you've got your exams on and think about modifications afterwards....if you feel they're required.

Glad to hear you're seeing results

Whatever you do, keep your BCAA intake up during your workouts and runs and that will help you protect your muscle. You could do some HIIT style stuff with your runs to make them a little more intense, though.

Go with 3x10's and drop the weight down a bit. Up your cardio to 20 minutes after EVERY workout and 45 minutes of steady state on off days. Keep one day a week reserved for not doing a damn thing but resting. Keep your caloric intake about the same at first and see where that takes you after a month or two of that. Just make sure you run the BCAA's a-plenty before, during and after your workout and cardio to help protect your muscle. I like running back/tri's and chest/bi's (my legs/shoulders bit doesn't get mucked with a whole lot) every once in awhile. I've found that it brings me great gains for about 4-6 weeks and then it stops being very productive for me, so I move back to back/bi's and chest/tri's for a good 8-12 weeks.

Jag, breakdown the "BCAA" thing for me... por favor...

Liquid Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's). There are a lot of different brands, but I prefer Scivation Xtend in powder form that I mix to suit my needs. I use it before, during and after any type of workout. Helps protect the muscle from being burned off as fuel during a workout or cardio. Should be a key component of anyone's arsenal and one of the few supp's I'll say EVERYONE should be using, along with whey protein, a multi-vitamin and fish oil caps.

I've got all day meetings every day this week, including dinners planned afterwards, which f**ks up my workout routine since I typically like to lift after work. So, I did something interesting this morning; I got up and did my chest/tri's routine on an empty stomach. I wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone, but I'm a bit of a mad scientist and don't mind experimenting on myself. Strength was WAY down, but I made it through the routine in good time and didn't have too many issues. Blood sugar started to drop at the end, but not too bad. It's extra difficult for me to do something like this because I have to take Nexium every morning an hour before I eat anything for my Gastro Esophogeal Reflux Disease. So I can't even get up and eat a little something before I workout like even a protein shake. All in all, not ideal, but at least I'm maximizing my glycogen store burning with this approach, I guess. Again, this isn't something I would recommend to anyone. I'm responding to desperate times with desperate measures this week and will go back to my normal approach ASAP. Wednesday ought to be interesting, since I'll have to get up at 5am to do legs and shoulders. I wonder if I'll get the dry heaves with my ATG squats. Hah! Just thought I'd share the insanity I'm putting myself through this week. :D

question:

So whenever I do preacher curls I notice that when I start to go heavy (a 6 or even 8 rep weight) I get a sharp pain in my right side about in about the middle of my ribs. It's only on my right side, and it has happened 3 tiomes now. Today, I even went over to the nautilus preacher machine to see if that would help it but that hurt it too.

Any idea what this might be?

Had an awesome back/tris/light cardio day yesterday. For some reason, my upper traps are way too sore for a post-back day. You'd swear I did shoulders yesterday. Weird.

Aw man, jag gave me 2 exercises a few weeks ago that have become permanent fixtures in my ab routine. **** if I can remember the names or where in this thread they are. :(

Ok, the first one involves you lying flat on the floor with your arms back behind your head and feet straight out with a ball in between your feet. Raising only your hands and feet; pass the ball from your feet to hands and back again. 2 passes is one rep so do 10 reps. 2 sets.

The other is you lying on the floor with your feet on the ground but knees in the air. Holding a medicine ball straight up at the ceiling, raise your head and upper back off the floor and hold it for a sec. 20 reps, 2 sets.

I do a lot of ab work. Increasing the cardio along with my good diet, will...well, soon give me a thin stomach/six pack. Stomach is already getting smaller.

And holy...there's a Youtube button when you post now? :csad: and Robin wouldn't kiss Batman.

Meh.

I guess with a steady cardio and diet, a flat stomach will come. Then, maybe, I would do more ab workouts. But, until then, I look more like a thick boned, stocky guy.

u still need to make sure that you have a strong core. do the work and it will help in the short and long run, whether u get a visible 6 pack or not.

Those look to be both upper abs though. I was looking for one that isolates my lower abs. I did one yesterday that was pretty good.

Lay on the floor, arms flat on the ground, keeping your legs elevated, roll you hips and bring your knees to your chest slowly and then back out again, keeping you legs elevated through the whole set. 12-15 x 3 is what I did and I'm feeling it today.

What if by chance a zombie invasion were to happen...would eating right and working out be on top of your list when not killing zombies, or would killing zombies, find secure shelter and food be on your list?

If there happens to be a gym and healthy food wherever I'm taking shelter at, then I'd go for it. But I'm not running out into a mass of zombies to get into a gym or organic food store.

and it's about fitness! :D

so, i read about this exercise in men's health and i was trying out for about a week or 2 now, but it got me some strange looks. Still, despite the comments i think it works well for a large bit of my upper body. I want your opinions on the exercise, if it's any good, if you do it, and if it's crap, waht else should i do for back exercises?
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k84/CyberFaust/untitled.jpg
excuse the caveman style art, bit i tried

anyhow, you take a dumbbell, lie down on a bench, and while holding your arm straight, move it in a arc in the positions described in the pictures.
i get wierd looks when i doo floor-wipers too so it's not a great factor.

i got a question:

Does the length of the work out determine the amount of calories you burn, or does the degree of the exercise determine it?

For example, i've been doing the Leonidas/300 workout and can do it non-stop in about 15 mins. Let's say you do 100 push ups in 2 miutes-non stop. Will you burn more calories if you do 100 push-ups in 4 sets of 25 over say, a 5 minute period? Because inbetween the 4 sets yeah, you'll be resting or stretching or whatever, but your heartrate will be up, and that burns calories even while your waiting to do your next set.....

Caloric burn rate is dictated by BOTH level of intensity and duration of your workout. It's also affected by what type of workout you are doing as some activities simply burn more calories than others.

that's not it, you do it with one hand and it's a full movement from those two positions
