Just remember Rest and Nutrition > Training.
For instance, today is leg/shoulders day for me. But the gym closes in 1.5 hours, and I won't be able to get there in time. I'm not sweating it, an extra rest day is always more beneficial than hurtful.
I"ll just wake up bright and early tomorrow and go lift at around 8am or so.
Are you gonna do leg/shoulders tom morning to make up for today or move on to you next group(chest/tris I think you said)?

I'm going to proceed as normal, counting today as an extra rest day, is all.
So monday = leg /shoulders
tuesday = chest/tris
wednesday = back/bis
thursday = rest
and remember to stick in abs whenever you can, don't ignore them.

Ok, let's get one thing straight: A professional and/or athlete's workout routine is never something to be mimicked as they are just that....professionals.
But look at Dave's 3rd day. That's probably one of the most hectic lifting days I've seen. I'm trying to create a more "civilian" routine using that as the template.

It's an awesome site and forum, but beware...
Some of the articles on bb.com are stupid and just outright wrong...
90% of the posters don't know what they're doing, and are asking the other 10% for advice, when only 1% actually answers.
Luckily Jag and I are part of the 1% that try to help out as much as possible.

People who use the genetics argument are usually full of **** and have no idea what they're really talking about. Genetics, except in EXTREME cases, won't hold anybody back. Lack of self-discipline, a low fitness IQ, crappy diet and plain laziness WILL, though. There are plenty of champion, pro bodybuilders who overcame what some would like to call "poor gentics". And, trust me, as you get older you will discover that your ability to sculpt your body the way you like so training smarter, eating better, and being more informed about what you're doing become even more important. Things like increased stress, more committents, a slower metabolism and even screwy hormonal profiles get all of us, eventually, "good genetics" or not.

Does walking and running burn the same amount of calories?
Depends on how long you're doing either activity for and at what intensity level. I know of powerwalkers who will definitely burn off more calories in 30 minutes of walking than someone who lightly jogs will. Walking is great exercise and definitely underrated by a lot of people because it's not considered high intensity (unless you're powerwalking).

Does anyone have any suggestions for a FEMALE trying to gain weight? I glanced at that bodybuilding.com forum in the women's section, and everyone seemed to be trying to slim down and lose weight, which is what the majority of women are trying to do, I guess.
Men seem to be the only ones actively trying to gain, and I know that as a woman I should be following a different routine....I just don't know where to go for advice.
I'm trying to gain some muscle tone and gain a bit of weight.

Actually, a lot of the same things still apply to a woman that apply to a man who is bulking, so a lot of what has been said here still applies. For a woman's point of view, though, look up the following ladies over a the bb.com forums: dbflgirl, someday, ms_mac, Eileen and Hibiscu09 (most of them can be found in the Over 35 forum and have journals there). Those ladies all really know their stuff as far as a woman trying to build muscle goes. Tell 'em I sent you their way so they can blame me later. :D

jagYeah...I hear ya. Anyone who says "Its easy for me" I generally note two things about them. They usually have asethetics in some degree but I typically never see them improve, at all. Usually all of them train like powerlifters, despite not being in the shape to train like powerlifters. Any "strength gains" they get come from sloppy form and/or getting used to weight as opposed to actually gain mass. Anyone can "move" weight around, it's not hard. They also typically don't know how to isolate the area they are working and take too much help from spotters...and of course my favorite is the fact that they always need a "lift off" (If you cannot get the weight off the rack, I am thinking lifting its gonna be a problem as well). Of course the irony is 99.9% of gym goers do way too much weight. Lifting is all about control.
Diet of course is the next phase, even more important than training. Despite what some may believe, structured diet is not only key...it's the only way to get actual results. There are lots of teenagers/college students who work out and are merely showing how their youthful metabolisms are keeping them looking good...for now. Once you hit forty or thirty and that natural physique you had starts to deteriorate and that guy who structured his diet and trains like an animal is still looking 18 you'll understand exactly why all that was so important.
Generally, actually pretty much always I don't preach this stuff...especially when I am in the gym. I spot a lot of novices and sloppy lifters to say the least, and I realize the last thing they want is for me to correct their form and have their mind blown when it turns out that 185 wasn't their set of ten, but their set of 4.

Couldn't agree more with everything you wrote. I'm one of those guys who didn't get smart and truly educated about my training and diet until I was past my thirties. Trust me, everyone's metabolism slows down at some point. And, a lot of people wind up with hormonal imbalances once you hit your thirties and forties as well. I discovered last year that I've developed low testosterone levels, myself, that I've boosted quite a bit through core compound lifts and proper diet. Was never a problem for me in my younger years and doesn't run in my family, so it goes to show it can get just about anyone. Your youth will fade. It is inevitable. It's how you address things for yourself that will make the difference, as you alluded to. If I only knew then what I knew now, as the saying goes. Thankfully, I'm still young enough to have done something about it as I have. A lot of guys aren't so lucky.

That's craziness lol. You know what? I really can't run; and I don't mean that in the out-of-shape way. I have almost no arch in my foot, so when I run I can't do that heel-toe thing and maximize my stride. I come down hard on my flat feet and it's HELL on my shins. I'll stick to biking and raquetball for my cardio.

Go check out Fitday.com (http://www.fitday.com). It's free and will allow you to track your diet and activity from day to day and give you a break out of your macronutrients, caloric intake and whether that's sufficient for or too much for your goals. Don't get overly hung up on just the calorie content of any given thing you ingest. Look at the overall intake you do throughout the day. Eating 5-6 smaller/medium-sized meals throughout the day will be better for your system. Especially if you're trying to get the right ratios of proteins, complex carbs and essential fatty acids.

Yo, check this out! So I've finally started jogging. I was jogging yesterday and today. I did like people said, jogged for two minutes, walk for two minutes, and repeat for about half an hour. Man, both times I was exhausted. But I felt great, I really did. It's great to get out doors and just run about like a mad man. Gonna do it tomorrow, and every day hopefully. Only thing is, I put it off to yesterday because I hurt my toe 2 weeks ago. My toe still hurts, but I don't wanna hold back anymore, I wanna jog damnit!
So yeah. I was thinking when I get home from my morning jog, I'll do a few situps and crunches too, which I did this morning. 30 crunches and 30 situps. Heck, maybe I'll go nuts and throw in some pressups. I'm out of control!!
It's unbelievable how fat I've gotten over the last few months. It's my birthday tomorrow. If I get enough birthday money, I'll buy myself a digital camera. And I'll take a picture of my fat belly. Then maybe I'll take a pic of my belly once every week, to see if the jogging makes a difference and as incentive to keep the jogging up.

Doing the sit ups and crunches (both very similar in their movments and msucle groups worked) won't provide you with a six pack that's all in losing body fat.

Hey, see phrases like "2 sets to failure" and "reps" and that stuff, what does that stuff mean?

Hey, see phrases like "2 sets to failure" and "reps" and that stuff, what does that stuff mean?
"Reps" are the number of repetitions involved in an exercise. The total range of movement completed.
"Sets" Are the total number of reps. If you do 10 "reps" that can be 1 "set". 3x10= 3 "sets" of 10 "reps"
"Failure" means to the point where you can no longer do repetitions. Of course I would follow to "form failure" You may be able to do 28 reps. But if 22 is your last rep with the proper form then stop.
Hope that helps.

Yes thankyou that's helped me out alot, none of the excercising websites explained what reps and sets mean. I've read that I should only do my abs two or three times a week.

Yeah most people. magazines etc assume people know the basics about exersice, but the most vital and important thing is learning the basics. If you know the basics, everything else becomes much easier to learn.
There are plenty on here that have a very large and good amount of knowledge of info to help you along if you really want to change the way you live. I say that instead of getting in better shape, because honestly, that's what you do when you being to exercise. It changes all aspects of your life and helps in so many ways.
It's hard to say what will work best for you, because in all honesty everyone works differently and reacts differently to different methods of exercise. Yes for the broad general aspect the huge majority of us all react pretty much the same way to simple things for simple results.
Running=losing body fat and water weight and increases your cadrio vacuslar system
Lifting weights= muscle development, better stamina and increases your cvs
But if you want to do more than just general exercise it becomes more complicated due to the fact that there is so much you can do. My advice, learn about excersice on your own. Men's health really is a great source  I subscribe to it and will continue to do so. Also just heading to the book store and picking up a few books should give you all the info you need on exercise, eating right and how your body works with the two.
Also by learning it on your own, you are more inclined to stay with what you start and will more likely be better motivated to stay with it. IMHO.
But to answer your question simply, well sort of. It depends on what you want and how your body reacts. Ab exercise can be done 1-3 times a week. Huge amounts of reps 100+ once a week. Or a smaller amount, 15 repsx 3 sets a few times a week.
Hope that wasn't too complicated. BTW are you just starting to exercise?

Aso you can modify it by bringing your knees in toward your chest and pushing your arms down past them. If you really want to increase the intensity of any exercise, negative reps are awesoome and will kick your ass
Slowly count from 8 and work your way back to your starting position

Stretching is good for you, but not before you work out. In fact it has recently been proven that you can have even more injuries resulting in pulls, strains and torn muscles or worse if you stretch before.
Just warm up for a good 2-5 minutes before you start to jog. Also what surface are you jogging on? Cement being the worse for you.
Grass, soft dirt, sand or rubber track being some of the best.

Jumping jacks, side twists (circular motion not bending over) high knees, arm circles.

Yeah, take a brief break in between sets. How long your rest is supposed to be has always been up for debate; I usually give myself about 30-45 seconds.

But you definately won't be gaining a pound of muscle a day from weight lifting, so expect to lose some weight at first.

Again it varies for each individual and the type of exercises you are doing. Lighter weight more reps requires less rest, heavier weight less reps requires longer rest. Give yourself a good minute that should be good.

Actually it's more like water weight  You don't lose a whole lb of fat that fast. Maybe half a lb or so but when you exercise that much and sweat that much a lot of it it's water.

Well he did say riding his bike, not running. It depends on your intensity too, if you jogging at a 5 mph pace you are not exerting yourself very hard. It's all about sweating, once you start sweating you start burning fat

It also depends on an individuals particular glycogen and fatty stores. Once you burn up the glycogen, then your body will start eating the fatty stores (and some protein stores in the form of muscle if your fatty stores aren't available).
