This is assuming you work out three times a week, but:
Maintenance intake: 2030 Calories/day
Fat Loss Intake: 1624 Calories/day
I'd say you're probably undereating and stalling your metabolism out.
jag
I do a bit of walking... now more than before. I'm probably undereating, but I'm on a budget... I can't spend $50/week on calcium-extra orange juice and a billion fruits and veggies and meat you actually have to cook.
LOL, that's rather funny. I'm overweight because I don't eat enough. Probably why I'm so tired after working out. Also because I'm anemic. Actually, I went on another site a few weeks ago that asked the same questions you did, and it told me I'm still technically 'healthy'. Strangely, I don't often get hungry. And there are occations where I probably eat far too much... peanut butter chip cookies are far too tempting... I refuse to buy them anymore...
See, this is why I need 'The Last Ten Pounds Bootcamp'. They make food for me, lol. And I'd have tons of time to work out.
Shame I don't live in Vancouver *sigh*.

My wife had the same problem coming to terms with that as well. We finally got her calories up to ~1500 per day and it's done wonders for her including her energy levels. There are A LOT of women who severely undereat and pay the price for it. What happens is that your body is used to running on a VERY low caloric intake over the long haul, but most people interrupt that with binge eating here and there. The body takes the caloric intake from those binges, no matter how big or small (and remember, if you're used to taking in 800 calories a day, 1200 calories all of a sudden IS binge eating if you go back to the 800 after a day or two) and immediately converts them to fatty stores instead of energy because it doesn't know when it will see that sort of fuel again. Rinse and repeat over time and you put on weight. Keep your caloric intake ramped up where your body doesn't feel compelled to store fat all the time "just in case" and it will start to burn it off because it doesn't have a need to store it anymore since it's getting enough calories to sustain itself and keep the metabolism operating at optimum rate. So, yeah....you've got to eat to lose weight in some instances. :)

I really should get on a diet plan. But I don't have the money to get the ingredients, the time (or skill) to cook, and half of the stuff peole suggest I absolutely cannot stand (tomatoes, cottage cheese, salad, ect).

Ah yes the stubborn six pack. Well here is the deal. You go into gyms everyday and here this guy..."I'm doing more reps for tone". I want to slap those people (heck I want to slap a lot of people in the gym). Reps don't equal tone...the only thing that equals tone is bodyfat percentage. Some people will never be able to have a clear definitive six pack....actually Schwarzenegger was one of these people as are several pro bodybuilders. For them the only path to a six pack is maximizing the muscle size (or in Arnolds case just simple there general appearance). People without a definitive six pack tend to be either endomorphs, who will have to do an excessive amount of low calorie dieting and target heart rate cardio to get rid of it, or the other two groups with a POOR DIET. I can tell you one things, outside of eating frequent and small meals you also need to cut out non-egg dairy (Ice cream, Milk, cheese) if you ever want to see your six pack. Milk products create a very fine layer of fat between your muscle and your skin. Most fat inertwines with muscle. Perhaps you've seen people with fatty muscle before...Powerlifters and Football players tend to be like this.
Unless you have a freakishly high metabolism, you must diet AND exercise to see a six pack. For ectomorphs, highly intense cardio typically provides good fat burning. A good cardio session may actually only be 4 minutes of 30 second sprint then 30 secong jog...do this 3 times a week and bump it up on the third or fourth week a minute if it proves to easy. Other good cardio ideas for people is distance running for 30 minutes twice a week with something else on the third day (swimming maybe). Another is the bleep test.

who tells you this crap?
diet, although not as good as pure water, is HEAPS better than regular soda
sans artificial sweeteners, diet soda is fine. 5 calories (or less) per CAN.
one can of regular soda is like 120 cals, completely empty and pure garbage
also, your diet (for today at least) looks very high in carbs, moderate fats, and low protein

bah why are you weighing yourself 5 minutes apart? weight means nothing, its all about how you look, about how much muscle you have, about how much fat you have, how your bodyparts measure, etc
again, im talkin in bodybuilding terms
now, for the weight, yes, water weight can fluctuate that much
but also keep in mind, the scale isn't always perfect
for example, step on a scale twice in the span of 30 seconds
most likely you won't get the same reading, it's inherently inaccurate
now many things affect water weight
temperature, humidity, activity level, water intake, amount of clothes you're wearing, etc etc
also keep in mind for every gram of glycogen you old three grams of water
thats why on carb cycling diets, your weight can fluctuate dramatically when you carb up
Super Kal

it wasn't on -5 minutes later- on again, it was more checking 2 different scales and comparing the two in the span of five minutes... and yes I know, it's gonna say two different things

nevermind about keto
what makes you think you should stay away from carbs??
Q: Why do we need to eat carbohydrates?
A: We need carbohydrates for:
Carbohydrates are the body's main source of fuel
Carbohydrates are easily used by the body for energy
All of the tissues and cells in our body can use glucose for energy
Carbohydrates are needed for the central nervous system, the kidneys, the brain, the muscles (including the heart) to function properly
Carbohydrates can be stored in the muscles and liver and later used for energy
Carbohydrates are important in intestinal health and waste elimination

Actually, that's a good sign that you're a bit sore. Means you did some good work. If you're breaking a sweat and getting your heart rate up there and feel like you're pushing yourself, no matter your fitness level, then you're doing well. Just don't overdo it or push yourself to the point that you are putting yourself at risk.
I picked up a horrible head cold yesterday. Nasty sinus headache all...damn...day. It's a bit better today, but I'm still trying to evict the colony of banana slugs that took up residence in my sinuses. I'm still debating whether to try and do a chest/tri's workout today (which I missed yesterday) or not. I'll see how I'm feeling this afternoon.

4 days cardio a weekI like training as much as possible too but I limit myself to 3 weight sessions a week (same sort of bodypart splits as you) which are much more intensive than trying to do each bodypart twice per week. I do cardio 6 times a week. 30 mins not too hard after a weights workout & 45 mins-1hr intensive on a pure cardio day. I like training as much as possible too but I limit myself to 3 weight sessions a week (same sort of bodypart splits as you) which are much more intensive than trying to do each bodypart twice per week. I do cardio 6 times a week. 30 mins not too hard after a weights workout & 45 mins-1hr intensive on a pure cardio day. Maybe you might want to tone down to something approaching that. :yay: A lot of what you're doing at the moment could be counterproductive.

Hey everyone how are the routines going? My lower back is killing me. Here are my three theories on why.
1. I strained it doing hack squats.
2. Due to all of the running and not enough stretching my hamstrings are really tight (which they are physically) and are pulling against my lower back causing tension.
3. I haven't trained my abs enough and my lower back is pulling more than my abs are.
4. A combination of all the above.
So I have been resting and stretching a lot more. Anyone else have an idea of what might be wrong or what I should do in the meantime to speed up the healing process?

Hey guys; I need some help.
So 3 weeks ago, I stared a new diet/excerise/lifting routine and I have stuck to it.
Its a huge lifetstyle change. I guess I have pretty metabolism for my age, because I used to have either mcdonalds, wendys, or taco bell atleast 5 times a week plus only junk food n **** when i was home, no excersize except the occanasional benching session but my weight never got over 215, and at 6 foot 2 and im still pretty strong; I was never fat; not even chubby.
But thing is, now I only 4 healthy small meals a day, run 3 miles every night and it is HOT out, and have been doing 1 miles worth of hills the past 6 days. So I step on the scale today and i am 203.
All this work and sacrificing (every time i drive by a fast food place.......) and i've only lost 12 lbs! And I looked virtually the same.
how can i lose more faster? My goal is 185 n get that 6 pack by september; but things aint lookin good!

You've lost 12 pounds in three weeks just by cleaning up your diet and doing a bit of exercise? Do you know how many people would KILL to get those kinds of results? I'd say you're doing fantastic and you should enjoy the "newbie progress" that comes to people who are just starting a program because it will slow down eventually. Losing the weight any faster than you already are wouldn't be healthy, anyway. There are no shortcuts.
Finally feeling halfway human today. I think I'm just about past this horrid sinus crap. May try and get some light cardio in tomorrow if I'm up for it and I'm shooting to start lifting again on Sunday.

It's unhealthy to lose more than 2-3 pounds of fat per week over the long term. When you first start working out though, you sometimes see accelerated gains for the first 1-6 months or so (everyone's different so it can be brief as a month or as long as six where you are seeing better than average progress). Some of what you've lost is probably also water weight.

Intervals means going very hard/fast for a short burst of time, and then slowing down for a longer period imediately after.
So if you were on a bike you would go as hard as you possibly can for 1 minute, then 2 minutes at 75%. Keep on doing that for 30 minutes to and hour.
I do the same with running where I sprint for a certain time period then jog for a bit.
The actual time limit you are going all out varies depending on your condition. Some say start at 30 seconds of sprinting and work your way up to 1-2 minutes. On a bike, I find that personally 30 seconds isn't long enough and stick to 2 minutes.

All of this is 100% correct. Typical "good" weight loss progress is 1-2 pounds a week. The friend that was mentioned was in worse shape/had more weight to lose and would be more likely to lose more weight starting out. If I (5' 11", 185 lbs) were doing the same things as you, my progress would be much slower than yours.
Stick with it and begin to think of it as a new lifestyle, not a sacrifice.
Keep your goals in mind, but remember, a 6 pack typically requires 10% bodyfat or less and that is not an easy thing to achieve, so September may not be likely...continue on with good healthy progress.

Yeah, that is why I mentioned the "renaming" thing.
The truth is, the way it is designed, you go through 4 different 4 minute sets, not just one, so first of all it is a 16 minute drill, not 4 (I hope they are explaining that!)
But the truth is, there is no secret science to the numbers, anybody could play with the numbers and get good results-30 seconds of work w/ 15 seconds of rest, 45 seconds and 20 seconds, etc etc.
But again, trust me, it is WORK!

Ice. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Rinse, repeat, Ibuprofen to help with the swelling. Let it rest and heal. Start doing some LIGHT stretching after 4-5 days. If you feel up to it, start working out again very lightly after about 7 days. Work more on your stretching and flexibility and make sure you're using proper form. Most people get these kinds of injuries from either trying to lift too much or letting their proper form slip (if they're using proper form to begin with).

Honestly? Sounds to me like the stress alone is melting muscle right off of you. The impact to your diet doesn't help matters. I'd say you've just got to do your best while you're getting ready for and taking the exams and accept that it's not optimal and do what you can when you can. The important thing at this point is to pass the dam bar so you don't ever have to deal with it again. Sometimes we have to put fitness in the back seat for a bit while we focus on more important things in the meantime. Just do what you can for now and be glad you were able to do that. The extra stress you're giving yourself is most likely hurting not only your fitness and muscle retention but your chances at doing well on the exam.

It's because they're overpriced and they suck ass. :) At any rate, I know how it is to work a temp job out of school. My first job out of college was at the appellate court handling clerical stuff. I had all the serial killer files in my office. The pay wasn't awful and the hours were tight; NEVER any overtime. It let me have some coin in my pocket to cover rent and play around a bit like I could never afford to when I was in school.

Run. It's free. Read up on HIIT principles (Google: "HIIT") and read about how to do interval training using sprints and long distance running. It'll get you in shape in a hurry.

I have a question for you runners out there. I have never really run consistantly in my life, but have been doing so now, but I had major pain in my shins and ankles. I was hoping the shin splints would just go away, but they got bad enough where I couldn't run and couldn't walk without a major limp for about a week.
I already knew what Jag would say and I got new inserts for my shoes before I started running again.
The pain isn't as bad now, but I definately still feel some. After i finish running is when the pain is the most noticeable, especially in my shins. But throughout the entire day my ankles and lower shins just ache.
Is this normal? If it's normal and my body just needs to adjust to running, then i am fine. I just want to know if I need to be doing something different (like new shoes) or if it goes away on it's own.

How old are you? And you said you just started running consistently. How often and how far? Shin splints are common for someone whose body isn't used to running excessively.
As for your shoes, I wear a ****** pair of New Balance when I run, but I'm young, and don't have any lower body issues. As far as I know, shin splints are more directly related to stretching and your actual gait then your footwear.
They'll go away by themselves, but you might have to take it easy for a while. I'd see a physican and get a more expert opinion, but in my experience if I stretched prior to a run, by kneeling, and then sitting on my feet, and leaning back. It helps stretch out those muscles in your shins.
That's really all I got until you give me more info. Hope that helps.

I agree with the stretching. Before and after the run, stretch your calves. Before my run, I stretch for a minute, then run "high knee" style on your toes for about 10 yards, then do it again. Also, get on the edge of a curb or step or block and stretch by pushing yourself up (like a calf raise), but also roll your foot back and have your weight on the back edge of your heel (to stretch the front of the calf).
Make sure your shoes are right for your feet-depending on the shape of your foot, you may need a certain type of shoe. There is a test you can do to determine your foot shape and thus the most likely way that you make your steps and what type of shoe you need.

Been meaning to tell you guys to give this stuff a try for your workouts:
http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/5_hour_energy_shot-200-200.jpg
I don't ingest a lot of caffeine in general and this stuff only has a bit in it (about as much as a weak cup of coffee). The rest is amino acids and B vitamins. Gives you a great, steady flow of energy for right around 5 hours, just as advertised. The best part is that it doesn't keep me up all damn night. I work out in the evenings, so loading up on caffeine would be a bad idea anyway. This stuff is a nice boost after a long day at work so I can hit it hard in the gym. At any rate, I thought some of you might want to give it a try. One of the gentler energy boosters I've tried by far.

Alright, you're still young. I didn't know if you were 30, 40 what. 2 to 3 is a good distance. I usually try to run at least a mile more than what I'm training for. It's good that you stretch. Make sure to lossen everything up before you head out there.

They run about $2 a pop if you shop around. I've been able to find them at Walgreens for $12 for a six-pack. They're like little shot bottles...not a lot to them. They don't make you feel bloated or full like some of those drinks can. I also don't like taking that much caffeine, personally. It shreds my adrenaline system (and my stomach). This stuff is a little easier on the system.

There is a test you can do to determine your foot shape and thus the most likely way that you make your steps and what type of shoe you need.
http://www.time-to-run.com/beginners/shoes.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_type
Also, if possible, run on a forgiving surface, i.e. not concrete.
Good luck! Thanks, I'll give these websites a try and see if I need new shoes. i just got done with my run and I am plenty sore right now (I'm always much more sore it seems for about 2 hours after I run.)

Fair enough. I was actually stuck between Army and Marines, and the Marines recruiter found out I have a metal plate in my arm, he basically told me that they probably wouldn't pass my physical and after that pretty much half-assed me thinking I was a waste of time.
The Army gave me a lot of extra ******** for it, but we made it work so I could still go in.
My brother in law was a marine though and he is one of the ones that really got me interested in joining any branch.

Spoons is right. It all depends on what YOU feel will be a good accomplishment for you. Don't get too hung up on what everyone else benches (half of 'em lie about it anyway) or what they say amounts to being strong. At least being able to bench your bodyweight amounts to being strong as far as I'm concerned. Personally, I like to be able to push far more than my own body weight. I keep chasing being able to push twice my bodyweight, but I've got a ways to go. The more muscle I put on, the heavier I get, which makes it harder to accomplish that goal. Haha! And no matter how strong you get, there's always someone stronger.

I have an instilled prejudice for soldiers, and my job school was on an Army base, so I've actually seen how they function. But, the Army and the Marine Corps closer than we've been in years, which is interesting.
But, in all reality, the Marine Corps has always been a warrior culture, and I think that's something the Army is now trying to get back to. When they began opening the Army up for everyone during peacetime, with the whole Army of One ****, I think they became more of a company and less of a fighting force.

I've only been lifting seriously for about 3 years and my 1-rep max is 245. I don't care much about numbers as most of the people who harp over them make me sick anyway. I just wanna be able to crack walnuts in between my pecs :o

Numbers don't mean ****, honestly. There are days I can't even get over 300 and there are days I can. Everyone is different from one another and even different from day to day. What matters most is that you're getting the most out of every workout and pushing yourself to do the absolute best that you can do on that given day. You do that, and it's all good.

I wonder about that also. I have had people that weight 165 and can bench 310 (almost 2 times bodyweight) and then I see people who can just get their bodyweight, but they weigh 250 and both are satisfied with their bench.
I agree, that nobody should get too hung up oon the numbers, unless they are competitive powerlifters.
However, if anyone wants to gain some significant weight on their bench, the Shawn Phillip's program DOES WORK. I used it and gained 45 lbs, and had 2 friends use it, one added 50 pounds and one added 65! Keep in mind, it will change your routine and this is again, if you are completely focused on your 1 rep max. (Maybe if you made a bet with someone or something). It takes 7 or 8 weeks I believe. But it does work.
