I like a drink every now and again. I tend to avoid it when I'm training hard as the two just don't go well together. When I'm taking a little time off to recuperate, though, a nice glass of beer or wine or even a martini is  . I just don't drink to excess these days. I had enough of that when I was younger.

At 280 lbs, 310 is not a huge accomplishment. Not trying to take away from what you have accomplished, but most avid weightlifters can at least get 50 lbs more than they weigh.
But do not dispair, because I'm not trying to slap you in the face. You have a setback, but it's not a huge one.
One. Never EVER! just let your size do the lifting for you. It only leads to a dead end. You need to have a coach instruct you on proper form and lift technique.
Two. Protien and creatine are not cheating. They are both naturally occuring substances within your body, one of which (protien) is necessary for muscle building. Protien shakes do not taste bad anymore, that went out in the 1940s. You can get a variety of protien products that taste every bit as good as a McDonalds Milkshake.
By not taking protien, creatine, and glutamine you are doing your body a grave disservice. These things are not steroids, they have no advere side effects (in proper moderation) and they are used by EVERY athlete who competes. The only one you cheat without the aid of protien supplementation in your diet is youself.
Keep trainig, but remember "diet is everything". If you don't get in that protien (and to a lesser extent Creatine and Glutamine) to fuel the muscle, all the work you do will amount to nothing.

Read this post for tips on how to increase your bench (http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=12219880&postcount=8251). Also, using whey protein isn't "cheating". Your body needs protein to grow muscle and whey is an easy and inexpensive way of ensuring that you're getting enough. It's either that or start eating ten chickens a day. :)

Ok here is my specialty, well one of them anyway.
Take a pot medium size (depending on how many cups you want to make) the easiest way to make fool proof perfect rice goes like this.
1. Fill pot with X amount of cups.
2. Rinse rice with water to clean it.
3. Fill pot with water
4. To determine how much water you need, take your pinky finger and place it into the pot/water until it touches the top of the rice. If the water is below your first joint the rice will be dry. If it is over your first joint it will be too moist.
This will take a little time to get right, you need to make sure the rice is as level as possible when measuring with your finger. Trust me this works though, I've been doing it for years and it's very fast and easy.
5.You will need a lid to put on top that will release a small amount of steam during the cooking process. Set your stove (depending on how hot it cooks) to the second or third highest setting. You don't want to boil it on max but get it boiling just a little. It should take roughly 20 minutes to cook the rice.
6. Keep an eye on it just to make sure you don't over cook it. If the rice comes out a bit too moist/soggy (which is better than burnt) you can somewhat fix this by putting a paper towel between the pot and lid to absorb some of the moisture.
There you go that should take care of it.

Thanks a bunches.

09-22-2007, 04:46 PM
There are much better ways to "shock" your muscles than 100 rep sets such as pyramiding, periodization, and rotating exercises in and out every week or two. The idea by using these things regularly is that you're maintaining sufficient "muscle confusion" on a regular basis to stimulate growth on a consistent basis. If you need to do a major "shock" session once a month then you're doing something with your routine that's allowing stagnation on a regular basis and that's :down .
jag
It good once you've hit a plateau, You only do 1 set of a 100 reps,I wouldn't do it a muscle group that I have no problem growing, but something like shoulders or calfs once in a while to just trow out your regular routiue and do something entirely differant...try it...don't be a whimp...lol

I have weights, plates, kettlebells and a bowflex machine at home. Problem is the Bowflex machine doesn't have a good calve isolation station. Everything else about the machine is great.

The most annoying thing i experience at a gym on a regular basis is a group of guys chit-chatting about basketball, football and whatnot while they're working at one particular station, and taking 5 -10 minute breaks per-person so they'e hogging up one station for a good 45 minutes. I experience this VERY often, and it has put me off the whole gym experience personally.

Anyway, I was wondering what kind of remedies do you guys and girls have for helping speed up recovery? I don't really like taking a bunch of chemicals so I lean more towards natural type remedies.
Here are some of mine.
A. Lots and lots of 100% natural OJ, I drink Florida Orange I like it best.
B. Vitamins, multi, C, etc.
C. Soup, chicken noodle is what I eat. Anything better?
D. Vapor Rub, Cold-Eeze cough drops, but not your typical drops.
E. Get a towel boil a pot of water and breath in the steam with a towel over your head and the pot.
F. Vapor rub
G. Vapor rub tablets for the shower. Somewhat mild but they help.
H. Tea for a sore throat, a little honey if you like.
I. Warm water and salt gargle also for a sore throat.

There's some sort of weird bug going around, BAH. I'm still on the tail end of some crap I picked up last week. Started in my chest, went up to my sinuses for a few days and then back down into my chest. I've hacked up quite a bit of junk, too. I just started back on the iron this week, but I made sure to get plenty of rest and get past the rough spot of it. Sleep is the main thing that gets rid of this kind of stuff for me. Extra zinc, Vitamin C and L-Glutamine also help. I also make an effort to keep my regular eating schedule intact, even if I don't feel like it. At night I use Nyquil to make sure I can breath and sleep well. If there's a lot of phlegm or sinal discharge, a gentle expectorant/cough suppressant like Mucinex DM (in the tablet form) can help quite a bit. Other than that, the things you listed all work well. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

I have to say that just working my core is really helping. My abs feel a lot stronger already and I have no shoulder problems as of right now.
Oh and on another note. I recently bought a 10lb bag of Vanilla Ice Cream Optimum Nutrition 100% whey protein. And if you haven't yet had it, let me just say yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkk k!!!!!!!
I've had both the Chocolate and Strawberry and both are many times better tasting. God I have to go through a 10lb bag of this stuff.......ughh

Enjoying a little bit of time off from the iron right now. I'll probably wind up scrapping my workouts the rest of this month as we bought a new house and I've got a TON of **** to get done around the current place to get it ready to put on the market as well as packing and getting things ready for the move. Going to be a crazy month!

I have this friend who says he's constanly tired.
Yet, he manages to strike up some energy to participate in football, basketball, martial arts, etc. You can see it in his eyes that he's always tired. He doesn't look obese at all but whenever he walks up two consecutive flight of stairs, his heart races and his legs feel like they're going to give out.
He sleeps from about 12 AM to 5 AM he claims. For about a year before that he slept for about 3 hrs a week and prior to that 1 hour a month.
Do you think it has anything to do with his weight (212) or does he need to sleep more, or should he get vitamin, iron, etc., supplements?
And on a sidenote...to lose fat you have to speed up your heart rate correct? So, does that mean a "fat" person can lose weight faster than a physically fit indivdual doing even the most menial of tasks? Like how walking up stairs gets a "fat" persons heart racing like crazy...are they bruning fat?

I think your friend should go to the doctor and get a full physical, including bloodwork for all his hormonal panels, kidney, liver and thyroid functions. I'm betting he's not getting enough sleep but what you describe could be a major health issue, sleep problems, diet problems, or something else.
No, fat people can't lose fat faster than an average person as a general rule of thumb.

A. You're friend sounds like he's dying....jk. I am not a Doctor so I can't diagnose him, but he should get A LOT more sleep. 6-8 hours a night, every night. Missing sleep here and there is fine, but 5 hours a night? 3 hours a week? 1 hour a month? You're going to cause serious health problems for youself.
B. He should eat more carbs, at least the same or close to as many grams of body weight he has if he is going to be that active. So if he weighs 200lbs, he should be eating 200 grams of carbs. Or at least 1/2 of that.
C. People with a lot of body fat will have an easier time losing weight, initially, because they have more to lose, but like everyone else their body will slow down and they will need to re-evaluate their diet and exercise regimen. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism and the greater the ability to burn fat.

He's been to the Dr. and they found nothing. One night he was jogging by the water front and 30 seconds in his heart was racing and he couldn't breathe.
They didn't do the liver or the kidney tests so I'll suggest that.

Doctor’s say he’s no asthmatic.
However, hibachi places render him breathless…literally.
Sometimes he can’t breathe after a meal and burping lessens the inability to breathe.
When I say can’t breath, I mean has a hard time doing so….not literally can’t.

Does he get severe heartburn? Could be reflux. Could also be a food allergy. I still say he needs to sort through this with his doctor.

You couldn't be more wrong. Excessive carb in-take as well as carbs like deep fried fats and junk food vs. baked potato's, whole grain wheats and the like are two different things.
Plus carbs are not only essential for having energy, they are also essential for your brain.

I'm in need of some advice on cutting. I've been bulking for a good while now, and i'm ready to shed my extra layers. I'm currently at 205 and the goal is to shave down to 175 by Christmas. I try to get at least 200 grams of protein a day, and average anywhere from 180 - 220 daily. Now my query is; now that i'm starting my cutting phase, how much protein should I be getting to maintain the lean muscle and strength that i've built up? I want to cut, but not at the expense of losing muscle mass. I'm looking at my caloric intake and my protein shakes stack up to about 800-1100 calories daily. Should I be cutting back on my protein intake as well, or..?

Here is what I know, I am not a leading authority in the least but I know a little bit.
A. You will not lose muscle, in fact studies have come out that indicate as long as you are active; play basketball, tennis, jog and do similar activities, you will not lose any significant amount of muscle for up to six weeks.
B. Measure your biceps, quads, forearms and chest now and see where they are at, then when you get to where you want to be see what they measure. My brother in-law just lost 41 lbs over the course of 6-7 months or so and his arms were 16" then and are still 16" now but his body fat is close to 10% as opposed to near 20% when he was bigger.
C. In order just to maintain the muscle you have your ratio should be .75g of protein to each lean lb of body mass. Even if you are getting 1 to 1 ratio you are still getting enough to build muscle.
D. In terms of your calories, figure out how much you are getting now; 2,000, 2,500, 3,000 and if you cut out 500 calories a day you should lose one pound a week doing that alone. With exercise and weight lifting you should be able to lose a little more but more than 3-4lbs a week isn't that healthy.
Hope that helps

My parents bought my brother a stepper for his birthday. I don't see him using it a lot because he;s into archery so he needs to build upper body strenght, not work on his legs.
So I'm probably going to end up using it. I want to know if this particular type of fitness equipment is any good. If I use it regularly would I see any results in the long run? I'm not looking for immediate results. Say after three months would I see any results? I'm eating right and going to the gym too so it's not like I'm hanging on just this machine.
But like any other girl, I'd like a nicer bum. :)

Got these two items plus my gizzly belt this week. Put the calve machine together yesterday, and just finished blasting my claves with an awesome workout! The calve step, suprisingly, made all the difference as it allowed my to go really deep, and stretch my claves during one legged calve raises with a kettlebell in one hand, and the donkey presses using the grizzly belt. The machine is absolutely awesome too.
