I used a door-frame mounted pull-up bar prior to my getting a Power Rack. Worked great, though there was a limit to how wide you could place your grip. Really wide-grip pull-ups are overrated, anyway, IMHO. Shoulder-width and hammer-grip are where it's at.

P90X?
ok, NM I looked it up...I don't see anything wrong with that shape, I'm around that size then again my shape is for a more functional purpose such as Martial Arts. No offense but Ronnie Coleman big is kind of ugly.:(
I'm not suggesting you get like Ronnie Coleman, lol. I am suggesting however there are more tried and true methods out there and P90X is just a fad. I totally agree with MK, P90X is good as it gets you up and moving, I just hate for people though to fall into a training trap which ultimately isn't going to suit them as well as something a little harder and more long term. Results take time, and I think most of these televised get fit fast can start you on a routine, but don't stress the hard work and smart training that you actually need to cultivate.

No offense, but Arnold did a lot of things in his workouts that weren't real ergonomically correct or friendly towards long term joint-health. If you're going calve to ass and getting sore knees or stuck at the bottom of the movement, then you're using too much weight for the lift. In my experience, people who refuse to go to ATG squats because they can "lift more weight going to parallel" are usually lifting with their ego rather than their brains. No offense to anyone with that comment, just my observation.

jag
Hmmm, maybe I do go lower than parrallel because my squat looks nothing like Arnold's half squat. His half squat has his hamstrings parrallel, mine have my quads parrallel (or just slightly lower than (meaning if you set a board on the top of my quad it would sit parrallel).

Speaking of Arnold, yes, I'd have to agree with Jag. Arnold started building really early in the game before much was known about the sport. He ate cheese, honey and milk by the gallons, something today we'd never do. He didn't know much about "training till failure" and really was into that high volume stuff that's now considered overtraining and overtaxing your body, even IF you're taking steroids. He was gifted no doubt, but he would've been bigger training with more modern methods.

ok, what i want to know is, is it OK to lift heavy heavy weights right off the bat? i mean, ive heard that football players try to reach the "point of failure" better by lifting heavy weights first, then lowering the weights as they go. it shocks the muscles right away and works them harder. does that build muscle faster or something?

also, if you started to work out your abs, how long would it take to start seeing results? they are a ***** to do! and which ab workout is the best for getting rid of those annoying love handles?

mrvlknight21
01-21-2008, 10:41 AM
Google-
What do you mean you "heard that football players......"
Who told you that, their trainer? Men's Health? BB.com?

I am pretty sure I recently gave you a long list of videos of ab workouts....WTF?

To see "results" from your ab workout first will depend on your body fat percentage, your diet and then how muscular your abs are.
There are plenty of teens who never do "ab workouts", but their body fat is so low, you can see their abs.

mrvlknight21
01-21-2008, 10:55 AM
Yep, I found it.
GOOGLE-You just asked about abs on Jan 3!?!?!?
It is on page 428 of this thread.

Here was my response:
Google-people respond differently to ab work. The "how often" question comes up a lot and the best answer is to experiment and see what works best for you. Some people do them 1-2 times a week and others do ab work everyday. But as Spoons said-make sure your body fat is low and diet is strict to see the best development. You did say that you had some love handles, so there could be improvments made.

Since your name is google, have you googled any other ab exercises? Go to youtube and find some ab work videos.
I like the plank myself-I am working up to a 5 minute one-keep your back straight!!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MHQmRINu4jU

There is the "bicycle" movement that is also a favorite:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=afE557_BshQ

Russian twists:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=D6hCPkVWIl0

V-ups may be the best overall movement, but isnt used often by most:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zMFHs-s3jbI

If you have something to hang from, do hanging leg raises:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=G0ysNevIv0w

There are many more, but that is 5 new ones for you. Be sure to keep up the intensity. Do a search and you can find probably 25-30 more pretty easily. Check here for more
http://www.shapefit.com/abs-exercise...-crunches.html

You may be one of those people who needs weighted movements to really develop noticeable abs (if what you said about your body is accurate). You may want to work some of that in.

Ugh, we have this guy at my gym whose a trainer...he has to be over 200 pounds and looks like Peter Griffin. His trainee yesterday asked him how long he'd been lifting/working out, and he said since college (sophomore year) and if this is true he's been doing some cake walk routines in the gym. I felt sorry for her paying his dues.

Though, yeah there is nothing worse than a fat trainer, but what really sticks in my craw, a trainer who is in shape but obviously trains outside his realm of expertise. Like, for example, my old trainer, JP, now trains almost all his clients with functional and explosive routines no matter what they are trying to accomplish. It's why I can't train with him anymore, and it really bugs me because it really hurts the clients. I mean he's convinced he can't get big (JP is) and that big guys are something special. So as a result, that's going to pass off onto his clients; especially the one's looking to get big.

John Mayer would equal instant judge wiltage. Not good. Something upbeat that will energize the crowd is good. The more the crowd goes ape**** for you, the more the judges will think they see something in you that they don't, and it WILL affect your scores.

Oh yeah. I saw a guy pose once to the "Batman" theme (not the sixties one...the Burton one), it worked well. I thought about picking a theme song. I don't think I want words, but it's still up in the air.

One of the things I've considered is the X-Men theme, the movie one. I want to get it though so I get Stewarts voice over about "evolution leaping forward" as I walk out. I think it's an interesting way to start off an posing routine.

Superman theme FTW! :D

But seriously, if you want good orchestral music that could fly for posing, there is always the classic "O Fortuna" from Orrfs 'Carmina Burana' (its in a boatload of movie trailers)

The theme from "The Rock" isn't too bad either...

There is this mutual "friend" of ours named Toby, but everyone calls him Toad (in fact put him in costume he'd make an excellent 1960s Toad). I'm sorry but i find that a little hard to swallow. I was in the military too. There's only 120 seconds in 2 minutes, and that would mean at some point she was doing two push-ups in one second.., same thing with the sit ups. And back when i was in the Army, the fastest the 2 mile run was ever run was around 11:00 minutes. And that's after you've fatigued yourself from doing the push ups and sit ups.

Were you the one doing the counting? Or was the drill instructor? And were the push-ups/sit-ups, all the way up and all the way down, performed correctly? I'm not saying it's humanly impossible but this woman would have to be frickin' bionic to pull this off.......

No i didn't time her or count her. This was taped as proof it was done by everyone else in her company (it was during ANOC). Their Platoon Sergeant was counting, and we all counted her sit-ups in class today when watching the video.

It was disgusting, she was probably 5 feet tall at most and probably around 100 pounds, but just ripped (you could tell just by her forearms).

By the way, Storm has decided that he will be dropping his gym membership since he doesnt go often enough to justify paying each month and he is more focused on getting better at running. He said he went 1 time in the last month.

I am working with him on getting what he needs. He has very very little space and little cash as well (he doesnt want to spend more than $100). So things like powerracks, power towers, full size benches and the like are out. He isnt interested in bodybuilding, just cutting some fat, getting general fitness improvements mainly (like the running).

If you guys see him around (usually on bat-boards) ask him about it. I picked up one of the Everlast doorway chinup stations that I posted a link to a fw pages back, so essentially, he has spent $25 and gotten 1 thing so far. I gave him an ab wheel to mix up some core work with (I had 2) and I am going to give him 1 of my jumpropes next time I see him (I have 2 of those also).
We are checking into adjustable dumbbells and so far, Target has the best deal (40lb set w/ twist on collars for $40). Wal-mart had some a little cheaper, with twist on collars, but some of the parts were plastic and I wasnt crazy about that. I just want to make sure they can hold enough weight to make it worth buying. If he has 2 dumbbells that can only hold 35 lbs each-he wont be very challenged. Im hoping we can check those out a little closer and see if we can get at least 60lbs on each one. I have SOME standard weight plates that I will be giving him as well.

One idea was to get a weighted vest-he could make just about any bodyweight movement more challenging, and use it to run sprints or stairs/hills with. I told him we should hold off on that for now, but we may have to do it. Not sure just yet. Again, he is very limited on space and cash.
Any thoughts/ideas?
Help me help him.

Dips arent a problem, I always do them pretty slow and controlled and with a good bit of weight. I may have to take a pic of that sometime. But, honestly, I cant get much more weight on the pullups anyway...especially on the rings, that 35lbs is more than enough to challenge me!

Here's a good primer on the Reverse Grip Bench (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0801/is_5_65/ai_n6005925). Start with light weight until you get the feel and balance of them. Use a spotter or a power rack when you do them, too, in case you let the weight slip and drop as they are very awkward at first.

I enjoy my protein too much for all that! Quaker Oatmeal is also great to me. Hell I like it all. What would be a good supplement to aid with the protein I already take? Something for some healthy energy before I workout and maybe something else to aid in gaining mass is what I desire. And of course thanks in advance, Lurking and talking with you guys about this stuff is good motivation since I don't have anyone to work out with, or anyone that is into it like I'm getting into it.

About the only thing I take pre-workout is a whey shake ten minutes before lifting. During workout, I keep the BCAA's with some extra glutamine mixed in going in the form of Watermelon Xtend. PWO I do another shake with some Waxy Maize Starch. If I'm dragging ass before workout, I'll sometimes do one of those 5-Hour Energy shots, since they don't keep me awake at night most of the time (I work out in the evenings, usually). Then I make sure I get a good meal about an hour after that PWO shake. Nothing is more anabolic than food.

Well, it looks like I was able to solve the dumbbell dilemma for Storm. They had spin lock adjustable dumbbells (handles only) on sale at Target for $12.74 I talked to a friend who said they would lend him some standard plates. I have some as well, so he should be set until he can get his own.
In fact, I brought home the dumbbell and loaded it with 50lbs to see how much room I had to work with on it.
here it is now
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg9/jb21-2007/stormsdbell001.jpg

So far, he has spent $38.00 and has gotten a multifunction Everlast doorway chin up bar, adjustable dumbbell handles, a jump rope, an abwheel and the use of plenty of standard plates.

jaguarr
01-27-2008, 07:17 PM
Hmmm....does he have a bench, Devil? Even just a standard utility bench, maybe with an incline on it, but no struts for a barbell would be a good thing to have. He could use it for a lot of different dumbell movements and bench dips among other things. Those are usually pretty reasonably priced and often can be found on Craigslist or at Play It Again Sports.

jag

mrvlknight21
01-27-2008, 07:28 PM
Jag-no, he only has what I have listed above. Actually, at the moment, I have it all, he is supposed to come down here and get it soon. Bench is the next thing on the list. I saw an adjustable one for $60 at target. I realize that none of this stuff is powertec, ironmaster or sorinex, but he has very very little room and really only wanted to spend about $100 to get started. Obviously, if he had $$$$ and space, a powerrack would be first along with a barbell and all.
In fact, here is the bench I was looking at.
http://www.amazon.com/Reebok-Combo-Bench/dp/B000MB8INI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1201483617&sr=8-1

keep in mind it is $59 and does not come with any weights.

jaguarr
01-27-2008, 07:33 PM
A little bench like that was exactly what I was thinking of, actually. Do you guys have a Play It Again Sports in your town? Well worth checking out. You can find some excellent used gear there for cheap. Craigslist often has this kind of stuff as well. No need to pay full price for it. The other thing you might add to the list is a good Swiss Ball. You can do a lot with one of those bad boys. I call mine the Murderball.

jag

mrvlknight21
01-27-2008, 07:40 PM
We used to have a play it again, but it closed down. When I was in Atlanta last week, I went to one and was outraged at the prices. They sell new and used and I was really just browsing, but they were selling new power towers for like $165 and if you wanted it assembled, it was an extra $50! We have an Academy sports here and they have a power tower for $79! The one I went to really didnt have much used stuff either, mainly golf clubs and things not weight related.
But we are still shopping around, but that bench may be the one, since it is within price and is adjustable.
I can actually get him a Swissball for free, so thats not a problem, if he wants it.
I may actually go back and pick up a set of those dbell handles. I think they will hold about 80lbs each if I load 4 10lb plates on each side!
I dont know why, but this is so much fun for me!

jaguarr
01-27-2008, 07:44 PM
I use some starlock dumbbells and I've loaded them up with 130 #'s worth of standard plates before and they held up just great. That's too bad that Play It Again is gouging in your area. They're still offering nice deals, here. What about Craigslist? I've found some pretty good stuff on there before.

I looked at the Craigslist for Augusta (where I live) and Athens (where Storm is) and didnt find much, unfortunately. I routinely check just in case there is a bargain out there to be found anyway.
I have found some things on Atlanta's Craigslist (which is 2 hours for me and 1 hour for Storm), but nothing that really fell into the right size, right price category. I guess I could check again for an adjustable bench though.
SEARCHING>>>>>>
Hmmm, here is a weider bench w/ 120 lbs of weights for $25....definitely a possibility. I would assume that it has a rack and bar too, there is no pic. I will have to email the guy and see whats up.

Obviously there are a few things missing from what you see in those pics-the heavy bag isnt hung up and the sandbag isnt out there either.
I talked to a friend who built his own pullup bar (an actual steel bar on posts, not a 2x4 nailed to some trees like I have now!) and he said he could build me one as well.

It's certainly not a prerequisite for growth or strength gains, but most of my better progress in those areas comes with at least DOMS. I know quite a few guys who almost never get sore, no matter how hard they lift or how often they change things up, and they're big boys, and I know some that get really sore. Had a good meeting with my urologist today. I've been using HCG for over a year to keep my testosterone levels up while my wife and I were trying to get pregnant. Now that she is and she's stable at 18 weeks and everything is looking good, it's finally time to pull me off that stuff and put me on straight testosterone. I'm going to finish up the couple weeks worth of HCG that I have right now and then switch over to the test. I hear those burn like a mofo when you do the injection, so that should be fun. At least I'll be able to go from doing injections three times a week to once every two weeks. I'll also probably drop a little bit of belly bloat as the HCG tends to cause a bit of that. All in all it will be much better for my health long-term, but I'll be on Hormone Replacement Therapy for the rest of my natural born days. Pray that none of you go hypogonadal at a young age like I did. It's the suck.
