You might be pleasantly surprised. Every single person I met before I had my 6 yr old told me the same thing...but her behavior turned out to be so angelic and the total opposite of the nightmare that I envisioned. She was such an easy baby to take care of that the babysitters said I should have charged them.
But don't get your hopes up. :hehe:

Yeah, my brother's third kid was like that. Easiest kid in the world. Slept through the entire night nearly every night. He's still laid back and easy going at the age of 5. I keep waiting for him to turn into a terror as it definitely runs in the family. Only one constant with kids and that is every single one of them is different so you never know what to expect. Most of them do give you sleep deprivation at least for the first couple of weeks, though, from nearly all accounts I've heard. :o

Before every really heavy lift (and even some that aren't so heavy), I envision and even FEEL myself doing the lift at that weight, successfully following through on every single rep. I CONVINCE myself that I WILL make this lift at this weight before I even touch the iron. It's part of getting myself psyched up for that lift and making sure I nail it. It works.

I did this alot when I pitched in high school and college. I would visualize myself making the pitch I wanted for a groundout/strikeout whatever. Really actually worked alot, and I never thought of doing it with working out. It should be easier to do in a gym without fans/teams all watching you, and I cant wait to try this.

Like I said, very powerful. I use it for a lot of things. Visualizing getting that impossible workload done. Visualizing getting that new house we wanted (which we are now living in). It's weird, a lot of what distracts me during flat benching isn't whether I can lift it; it's that my form is perfect. Since I'm currently trying to build up my inner chest, my grip is prob a bit closer than most of you guys. Add that to proper elbow placement, back arch, feet flat on the floor, not bouncing off your chest, etc lol.

You probably aren't lifting with good form. That, and you really need to be pushing yourself when doing them. Sometimes after I get me reps I'll take two or three breaths and go for two more. Just be persistant too, you'll get there, it takes time.

I know guys that are pulling 700-800 pounds on deads that make me feel like a weakling. There's always someone bigger and badder. Truth of the matter is that we all have to start somewhere and as long as you're pushing yourself and steadily challenging yourself to make progress, it's all good. When I started lifting seriously again about three years ago, I was using a working weight of around 195 on my deads because of my lower back problems. But hanging in there and working at it has reduced a huge portion of my lower back pain because everything has strengthened up down there. Keep at it.
Hellacious leg/shoulder workout tonight. I've been doing three straight sets of widowmakers with my Ass-To-Grass Squats at a bit of a lighter weight for awhile, so tonight I changed things back up to heavier weight and ran three sets of ten with some progressive loading that ran me up to 275 with a 2 second rest/pause at the bottom of each rep before coming back up. After that I backed it off to 155 and ran a widowmaker set of 20 to top things off before moving on to the rest of my routine. Felt nice to go heavier again. Doing the widowmakers like I've been doing definitely aided in my work with the heavier loads, so I'll be rotating that in and out from now on for sure. Rest of the routine went really nice as well. Ran three sets of ten with my shrugs at 330 with more of that rest/pause action at the top of the rep. Rest/Pause is a great technique for giving your routine a little "oomph" and making it more challenging by making sure you're not using any momentum whatsoever for your lifts.

I switch things around pretty often with my rep/set config, whether I'm doing rest/pause, different exercises that I swap in and out every week and other little tricks to keep things fresh and keep my training fresh and keep my growth and progress moving forward.

Reason I inquired about deadlift stance is that the slightest variation on hand placement and leg width can affect how much back vs hamstring you use. Apparently my sumo-like form targets the glutes. Don't get me wrong, my lower back is on fire right now and nothin goin on around my bum lol but if there's a way to use more back, I'll switch my form from week to week

Filling out the chest area is primarily just time + heavy ass weight + food + rest, so Scooter's really not wrong. You can SORT of emphasize lower, middle and upper chest by varying the angle of your lifts, and you can SORT of emphasize a certain part of a muscle group by using mind-muscle connection and really focusing on that part of the muscle group during a lift. But, really, it's impossible to work a muscle group without working the entire length of the muscle fiber of that muscle group.

Right, and the fibers in the pectoral muscles generally run (mostly) horizontally, so isolating just the innermost portion of said fibers is fairly impossible. Not to say you can't build some impressive pecs though, Spoons. My advice would simply be to not worry about micro-analyzing anything.

I find if you want to bring out that coveted middle pec there are three words to committ to memory: concentration, concentration, concentration. It's really less about what exercises you do, though a fly is going to be your best bet, but how you do it and really working that mind muscle connection. I envision trying to crush a nut with my inner pec. Really trying to crush and squeeze them together each and every rep. Yes, like you said, this works more than just the inner, but ultimately you can shift emphasis simply by concentrating on where you want to hit.

Eh. I braved it when I went to College. People will hog the machines whereever you go. Most people view those places as social clubs. If you're determined and go in to get work done and not chat, people will get out of your way. You just have to ask, and if they don't let you work in start telling them you need to work in. They'll let you rather than cause a ton of angst.

I rarely work out in public gyms, anymore. Mostly when I'm traveling on business. It's great fun, though, to get some guys to agree to let you sit in with them on bench or squats, let them go through their set and then start piling on the weight for your own set and watch their eyes widen as you do your sets with that. I always ask 'em if they would help me unload the weight so they can work back in at their weight. At least 50% of the time they say "Oh, that's okay, we were pretty much done anyway" and leave. Haha! :D

Hey, I have some pigmentation.
I got a question for Shadowboxing and jaguarr since they seem to know quite a damn bit about the body and working out. If anyone else wants to answer go right ahead.
I've been lazy for too long. I need to start exercising but have one problem for now. I have Bi lateral hernia. Both the left and right sides of my abdomen. Through this I've learned just how much you use your stomach muscles for some of the smallest things.
Until I can get surgery, do you recommend any types of possible workouts or exercise that I can do that won't affect me down there too badly?

This is a hard one to answer, because it really depends on how severe your inguinal hernia is. Your limitations will be dependent on whether there is risk of inflicting additional damage or not and only your doctor or surgeon could answer that, so it's definitely worth a conversation with him or her about what you are or are not allowed to do. That said, I would think that moderate cardio like walking or an elliptical machine may be permissible. But with a hernia, I would probably avoid weight training or anything overly strenuous without clearance from the doctor. The core is used in absolutely everything we do from a physical standpoint, so you won't want to do anything to worsen your condition. Post surgery will be where you'll have your work in front of you for full recovery.

Yeah, I'm with Jag on this one. Whatever it is, it's going to be light or moderate cardio at best, and maybe, maybe some light, light weight training. That said, whatever you attempt to do must, absolutely, without question be cleared with a doctor. NOT WITH A TRAINER. I can't stress that last part enough either. I know a lot of people with medical problems who go to trainers as a means of "clearing" their workout program. Some trainers will tell you anything, even if it's detrimental, to get you to work out with them.

Thanks! My condition isn't that bad, I've been wearing one of those hernia brace/belts for the past year. Finally got hired on from being a temp last November and got medical. I'm trying to get the surgery done in April hopefully, so I won't have too long to wait.

My philosophy on trainers has certainly changed with experience. I used to think trainers were like the high father's of training knowledge, and admittedly when I was young most of the trainers I knew were in better shape than me. Now, though, I realize how much the lack of regulation kills that industry. Now if I meet a trainer I almost immediately assume he/she is a piece of sh**, and then I can act pleasantly surprised when I find one that actually knows his/her stuff. It amazes me how many of them talk out their ass****s

Good plan and glad you're going to be able to get it fixed, soon. It's just one of those things that you don't want to make worse while you're waiting to get the surgery taken care of. I supersetted squats, lunges and stiff leg deadlifts..and it kicked my ass! I think it may have something to do with the cold weather, as i have the weights out on the balcony, and the cold bar/dumbbells, coupled with the cold air i'm breathing in, tends to wear me down a little faster. I wear weight gloves only cause of the temp, but it's still not helping.

You know what? He's got great form on his squats. He goes ASS TO GRASS, kids. All the way down. No bounce at the bottom. And he was doing ATG Squats with ~500 #'s from what I could get a look at (his damn trainer was always standing in the friggin' shot). The other interesting thing is them talking about doing his squats barefooted. I did that for the longest time as well, but it gave me some problems in my feet so I quit doing it. His deads were spot on, too. That's a guy who knows what he's doing in the gym and knows how to get work done. This vid also reminded me of a long lost trick that I need to add into my arsenal: chains. Some heavy chains are great to add in on close or reverse grip presses like they were doing. On the really heavy stuff, he wasn't going as low as his reps with lighter weight, but he was still going low enough to call it Ass To Grass. He was going as far down as he possibly could before coming back up. That's ATG.

Yeah, I know some guys who avoid cardio like the plague. I think it holds them back, personally. And I also have known some guys who do some really wonky **** with their thumbs on bench movements. One guy did them open handed and didn't wrap his thumb around the bar. That scared the **** out of me every time he benched. I was sure he was going to slip the weight and told him so. He kept giving me that "Never happen!" line. One day it happened. With 325 on the bar. Lucky for him there were guys spotting not just above him but on either side of the bar. They kind of caught the weight before it fell on his chest full force, but not enough to keep him from cracking three ribs. When he finally came back to the gym, he was using a thumb-wrapped grip for his bench movements. Dumbass.

Classic. I saw a guy once doing the rotating shrugs. You know when they don't go up and down, but rather move in a circular motion. He popped his shoulder out of joint, then dropped the weight on his foot...which I'm betting he broke in several places.
I tend to avoid correcting people in the gym as a general rule, usually because they just ignore you and do whatever the hell they want. Learning the hard way is infinitely more effective anyways.

Human nature, I'm afraid. I'm a strict advocate of "lead by example". If you do what you do and earn what you get people will follow you. Sometimes the best way to correct someone is simply to stand next to them, grab the weight and perform the movement with correct form and proper technique right before their very eyes.
Lots of people make it their business to be the "nagging father figures" of the world, and most of the time those who spend their time correcting others rarely spend much time correcting themselves.

My side of the story - it cost me 30 bucks a month to attend my previous gym. I will spend, roughly, three times that - however, more importantly, that cost will not re-occur.
Thanks guys - and DEVIL.

DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) is not a prerequisite for realizing growth. If you're getting good work in and feeling it during the workout, that's the primary thing you should be using to judge whether you did enough to promote growth or not. Being sore the next day really isn't a requirement.

1) Yeah I know what you mean, I'm not allowed to do cleans or snatches there and I really want to but I mean I pay $50 a year so how can I complain? When I get the room to set up my own rigs I will but until then can't beat $4 a month. :D

BAH-that is a surprisingly good price for a gym membership. If I had a deal like that, I might even take it (even if I rarely went). So many gyms now have outlawed Olympic lifts and even deadlifting over a certain weight. Its pretty crazy, really. Many of them try to cater to soccer moms and the like, who have money and will go to a gym for spinning classes or whatever and never really set foot in the free weight area. I guess they figure that thats where the money is, because folks like that will always pay, whether they are going or not and whether they are getting results or not. So they want those people to feel comfortable.
Speaking of that-some gyms have outlawed grunting and even PUT IN ALARMS to go off if the noise level gets too high. (Im serious).

2) I thought that you once you workout enough you actually no longer get sore the day after a work out as long as it is somewhat within the range of your typical routine?
Not necessarily. I get DOMS on a regular basis, but I'm constantly pushing myself to my limits in my workouts and changing things up to keep them fresh. I still get good growth without DOMS, but I seem to get much better strength and size gains when I am seeing DOMS. But that's me as an individual. I know a couple of monster-sized dudes who claim they never get sore no matter how hard they push it (and they aren't slackers in the gym as I've lifted with them). Everyone is different, but DOMS really isn't a prerequisite for growth or progress. There's even a giant debate over what causes DOMS. Some people still think it's lactic acid build-up, others think it's something else entirely. The best advice I have is don't worry about it. Do work. Stick to your diet. Drink lots of water. Do your stretching. STFU. :D

When's the best time to weight yourself to get your most accurate weight? I say it's first thing in the morning. It depends on what your eating and what you are doing and how much of it you are doing. Did you work out every day for 2 weeks? You should take some days off bc working that much non-stop isnt good. Your body needs to rest

every day except on sundays... and I try to keep everything under an hour and stay on a 2000 calorie diet which includes stuff like grilled chicken, fish, vegetables, and maybe a little bit of ham and cheese on whole wheat

Missed yesterday so I made up for that today on my off day....I hate being off schedule. I'm concerned I may over did it this time...I usually have intense workouts to begin with. Though, I'm still a bit shakey all over hours after the workout....unless that means work done.
...and could have been that I didn't get a chance to eat enough today.
BAH HUMBBUG!

Well that depends onthe individual and how hard your workout routine is.
Everyone's body needs to rest though, except for maybe that super baby.

Look who it is :p
I've nowhere near enough endurance right now for a marathon. Good luck with any marathons you do in the future
