No! Anything but that.

I usually try to eat breakfast by 9am and lunch around 1pm. By schedule is off today.

Seriously, guys....breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you wake up after sleeping all night, your body has gone catabolic which means it's starving and using your muscle to feed itself, which is not a good thing regardless of your fitness or weight goals. Your metabolism is also at nearly a dead stop when you first wake up in the morning. Eating a good breakfast helps remedy that and keeps your metabolism stoked up and gives your body the fuel it's looking for. You have all day to burn off a good sized breakfast, too, which is not the case with your other meals throughout the day. EAT BREAKFAST!

I love junk food. I'm not addicted to it & I know the risks of eating it but I don't see the point in forcing myself to eat a bunch off food I don't want to eat. I've seen people who tell me what they eat daily & frankly, I don't care for eating something I don't like.

I see what you mean. I've never had any healthy meal that came close to the taste of a cheesesteak or a pizza w/ all my favorite toppings. But in the healthy food's defense, I haven't had the opportunity to cook it more often. I look forward to the time when I can prepare healthy food in a variety of ways.

Also, it's about willpower. Passing up a burrito for a chicken breast, brown rice, and broccoli gives me a sense of accomplishment knowing what I could have put into my body

Absolutely. I have a cup of oatmeal (prior to cooking) a 50 gram protein when shake and some fresh fruit like a banana or some blueberries nearly every morning. Sometimes I'll shake it up and have some eggs with my oatmeal instead, but I'm always gearing for that mix of protein, COMPLEX carbs and healthy fats with each and every meal whenever possible.

My only real downfall is a couple pieces of Dove dark chocolate now and again and maybe a Guinness every once in awhile.

Ran a few sets of ATG Widowmaker squats with some lighter weight tonight and took it easy on my back as it's still a bit sore from whatever I did to it last week. Everything seems to be popped back in place, but the soreness lingers a tad. Felt nice and worked some kinks out. Ran the rest of my routine with a little lighter weight and higher reps as well. Left thumb is still giving me some issues. Not sure what's going on there. I may have to just saw it off.

Thought I would flesh this out a little bit, in case anyone was wondering about what boyscouT and I were referring to. A lot of dedicated bodybuilders ingest some sort of casein protein (instant mix shake, cottage cheese, etc.) before bed with the intent that it will help prevent them from going catabolic while they are sleeping since it's a slower digesting protein and will feed the muscles longer. The reality of it is that a cup of cottage cheese will take 90-120 minutes to digest and then continue to feed the muscle for another 60-90 minutes afterwards, so you you can pull 3-3.5 hours of nutrition to the muscles with this practice. But, if you sleep 7-8 hours a night like most people, your body is still fasting and going into a catabolic state; maybe just not for as long as it would without the casein before bed. Most of the TRULY hardcore bodybuilders I know that are training for shows get up every 2-3 hours during the night to have a meal of some sort as that's really the only way to keep your body anabolic at all times.

Shooting them is kind of boring dont you think? How about golf clubs to the ribs a few times, cutting the balls off with a dull blade, gouging eyes out and cutting fingers off with a cigar cutter first? Finish it off with a curb smile ala American History X.

I hate people who go to the gym and just stand around. The last 30 mins of my workout, a really tall guy (who is a friendly acquaintance but I never remember his name) who I see often in the gym came in, but tonight he had two groupies with him. Both girls looked like they had just gotten their hair pressed, had on hoop earrings, tight pants, and lace tank tops with a regular bra. Both made a big show doing these arm-swinging stretches for like, 5 seconds. Ten minutes later, they both did about 4 jumping jacks each. The rest of the time, they all stood around talking and the girls giggled. They also sat on machines and took up space. People even had to come over and ask if they were going to use them, because of course other people actually wanted to work out.

:down :down

I hate when people do that.

I know there are some HIIT enthusiasts here, but I love me some steady state cardio on an elliptical or treadmill. 10 minute low level warmup followed by 45 minutes of intense, steady work and then a 5 minute cool down (60 minutes total). Do it first thing in the morning before breakfast if you really want to burn through your glucogen stores in a hurry and get to the actual fat burning part of it faster and use some good BCAA's like Scivation Xtend to protect the muscle while you're doing it. Do that kind of cardio at least 5 days a week if you're not lifting regularly every week and at least 3 if you are.

The other component of this is, of course, your diet. If you're eating garbage, well, that's half your issue right there. Make sure your diet is good and clean and maybe track your caloric intake and macronutrient breakout on a daily basis in something like fitday.com to make sure you're eating at an optimal level and getting the 40/40/20 split of protein/complex carbs/good fats on a daily basis that you ought to be. No processed foods or refined flours or sugars and drink at least a gallon of water every day as it will help detoxify you and aid in burning the fat off.

That is true, because running is a high-impact activity. However, if you demonstrate good form, warm up properly, and wear a the right running shoes, it can be so beneficial, mainly because it's an activity that involves your entire body.

Don't get Nike running shoes, whatever you do. If you want to find shoes that would be best for you -- http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/whichshoe/1,,s6-240-325-329-0-0-0-0-0,00.html -- but I'd suggest just going to a local store that seels quality shoes and seeing what works for you. You want something light with good arch support.

As for a running workout, your stairs workout sounds good and challenging, but I'd suggest a more straightforward sprinting workout. Is there a high school near you that has a track, or some sort of 400m track nearby? Because that's the best way to get work done, running-wise. It's also really easy to keep track of your distance and time. Here's a workout warm-up I recommend to start:

-
800 meter warm-up (2 light laps around track)
stretch
8 100m strides (can be done on a straight-away, walking back between each one)
stretch
-

The next part is where you can get creative, as to the kind of shape you want to be in. You can do 4-6 200m strides with short rest, or you can do shorter sprints with longer rests. These workout also need to vary with each day. You don't want to do the same level of activity each day. It's best to have 2-3 days where you can say you worked out hard, with the rest being easier. For instance: Monday-easy, Tuesday-workout, Wednesday-easy, Thursday-workout, Friday-easy, and take the weekend off. Or you can mix that up to whatever suits you best.

There's also so many other ways you can vary your running workout. If you're interested, let me know. Running like this will help you lose weight, and help you to become faster and stronger. Technicaly, people don't ave the ability to gain speed, only to get stronger, and this will do that.

If you have a store nearby that will analyze your feet and running style-go there. They will recommend the best shoes for you. If not, I always recommend Asics (Nimbus). Dont get the low end $50 either. I have had a pair for a year and have put a few hundred miles on them and they still look only like a month old. As soon as I put them on, it was like stepping into a cloud. BUT-everyones foot is different what works for me may not work for you. Try some on, some stores also have a treadmill in store so you can run a minute and gauge the results.

Yeah, that could work. The thing about a solid rinning workout is that you have to keep to up.

Also, something that would be really effective for you is to grab a stopwatch and use it in your workouts. After your warm up (which the probably THE most important aspect), when you get into your 200s (half a lap around the track) time them. You can stride them out, not too fast but a solid pace, and run each in 35-37 seconds if you're just starting out. Then take 45 secs rest, and start again. As you progress with your working out, you'll want to be able to run each 200 faster, and bump your rest time down to 30 secs, which will be tough, but beneficial.

Another thing...don't limit your workouts to only 200 meters. You can go for longer distance less times (I suggest 3 300 meter strides), or you can make the distance shorter and run them faster (6-8 150m strides). It's your perogative, but I could help you design a specific workout for this type of running to start you off, since I have a lot of experience with it.

Good info, duder. Running's definitely not my forte by far, so I'm glad to see you chiming in on the subject.

Yeah, I would take that into account with your first week or two. You'd basically start off the warm up a designated for the first few days, and slowly ease yourself into running sprints. I could also help you navigate the track and manage your time and rest, so just let me know if you want help.

A good way to start now if there's snow on the ground is to use the (stupid) treadmill, and get at least a mile in each day, two if you can do it. Nothing too hard or crazy, but just get yourself running, getting the blood flowing, and building up stamina.

It's nighttime & I can't go to sleep so I'm just watching a Batman movie & waiting until I get sleepy. What're you doing.

Hahaha, this sounds like such a jittery high post. You been smokin up tonight kiddo?

I'm trying to find something to talk about so I don't get bored as my plan was to be sleep by now but I'm up & trying to break the boredom.

To diet, I always count grams of protein and carbs. Cut out all saturated fat and use flax, peanut butter etc. instead as my lipids. This is particularly important if you are geared up, as it reduces LDL formation.

Stallone ate a piece of fish and a leaf of lettuce to stay lean for Rambo III.

He never said anything about breakfast, lunch or dinner - just the fish and lettuce.

THAT'S INSANE.

Stallone is funny. He got caught in Australia for using steroids last year. Did he mention performance enhancers. ;)

Considering the leap - in body shape, looks, and mass - from Rocky I & II to III and the Rambo's, I'm sure he found something to help besides 'fish and lettuce.'

I talked to a guy at a nutrition store and he said that in order to gain alot of mass threw weight training my diet would have to include 4000 calories! I know a bit about lifting and such but that sounded crazy I prolly pull just about 1500 a day, if im lucky. What would you guys suggest for a 170 pound male with a 225 bench who works out 3 times a week?

The guy at the nutrition store is a dumbass and you should never listen to a damn word he says, ever again.

Check the link in my sig. There's a piece on nutrition and some links to some calculators that will help you figure out your optimal daily caloric intake and recommended macronutrient breakdown based in your current fitness level and activity, weight, age, and goals. I can tell you 1500 is probably undereating for the level of activity you have. You'll probably be in the 2500-3000 calorie per day recommended area when you run the numbers though the calculators.

I might be down for that. The thing is, I'm only really good with sprinting workouts, and not as much with distance, because sprinting is what I have done for so long. I could probably provide somg insight into what distance running is all about.

Either way, running is great for you, and you'll feel so healthy if you keep up a good schedule, along with some lifting.

mrvlknight is kind of a distance runner, I believe. Maybe the two of you could work together on a running primer?

hey jag . . .

you think I should try to eliminate coffee from my diet when I really get into it? I use non-dairy creamer and sweet and low (which I know is bad for you in large amounts, regularly), so you think I'd be better off using regular sugar?

oh yeah . . . btw, I only drink about 2-3 cups a day; I know I should be drinking green tea instead but I enjoy drinking coffee more . . .

It's amazing how quickly I've moved up in pullups. A few weeks ago I could barely do 3 sets of 3. Now I'm doin 3 sets of 5 and with great form.

Steroids!

Congrats on the pullups  I happened to glance at my back in the mirror this morning as I was pulling a shirt over my head, and my back muscles look nice. I was most pleased.
