Excited to go to the gym today. I get to run my little brother through my back/triceps routine. I can't wait to get him deadlifting(not heavy though, he's only 14) :D
I've learned to just live with my love handles, its genetic. So I just work the obliques (sp?) to define them now or try to tone them up a bit.
The Joker_1000
03-21-2008, 11:11 AM
Dude, you can get rid of love handles, don't give up on them.
Btw, I still didn't work out yesterday so I'm probably about to get a quick work out in this morning & then do some cardio later. I'll be back on my regular routine next week & the week after that will probably be the week I use to take a rest from the weights.
No its ok, really My dad has them I have them and my brother have them my grandfather said he had them when he was my age too, its fine. lol I just work the Obliques to define that muscle and it all works out.

Well, keep doing what you're doing, make sure you see results. Like jag says, DO WORK!
I'm about to work out in a little while, that little fiasco that happened on Wednesday really threw my mindset way off. I'm cool now, though.

Yeah,...it's the only way I think I can fix my diet.
I still have my job as a cart pusher...so I get a lot of exercise...so putting on muscle can be hard, since my body won't be getting enough rest to form muscle. But right now, I want a positive way to relieve stress. Tomorrow is my Mom's B-day, so I hit the weights again Tuesday night.

Btw, if I do eat junk food, isn't the best way to still lose weight is to do cardio or other exercises that will help burn calories? I do jump roping for cardio and if I've happened to have eaten some junk food on that day, I also do a few other exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups. Isn't the key to losing weight is to burn calories?

5'7" with a 37 inch waist and you're in middle school? Now is really the time to start cleaning up your diet if you want to get serious about losing weight.
No, the key to losing weight is diet AND exercise. And diet accounts for a LOT of it. If you eat the junk food, you aren't likely burning any existing fat at all. You probably aren't even burning all the fat calories that you ate in the junk food.

Well,...as long as you are active, eating junk food isn't a big problem, but it's best to limit it. You want to eat good stuff most of the time.

When I have ate junk food this month, I've spaced out the days in which I've eaten it. For these next five days, I'll be more heavy on my cardio and I'll be eating clean. The weekends will be my days off if I eat any junk food then. Suprisingly, when it's the weekend I don't eat a lot of junk food at times. I definitely need to do some cardio, I guess I won't be taking a break from working out like I originally thought.

If you're really serious about losing the weight, you need to limit that junk food as much as possible. Don't have cheat days...every once in a while, allow yourself a cheat MEAL at most. You have your youth in your favor...if you start doing this now, you'll start good habits for your future and it'll be easier to get the weight off and keep it off

The road of ignorance? What? For nearly this entire month, I've been following proper nutrition & getting good exercise as I've been seeing results. I've gotten a new routine & I've eaten a hell of a lot more healthy foods than junk foods this month. I know what I'm doing, I'm not following a road of ignorance.

A person needs a cheat meal every once and a while. Otherwise...well...not having one could cause stress on said person. And when they do have a cheat meal, it might turn into a cheat day. It depends on self-control, too.

If I do have a cheat day once a week, I'll make sure I don't go overboard but generally, when I'm really trying to go around with eating junk food, I don't have cheat days for at least one or two weeks.

It isn't that you can just say, "Oh, I've been eating really, really well this month! :D I'm also still eating junk food, but not as much as the good-for-you kind of food! :D" I'm sorry. That's not how this works. You don't seem to be at all dedicated to weight loss and/or muscle gains or whatever it is you're goal might be.

Human growth hormone produced normally in the lower part of the brain I believe in the pituitary gland (SP) which the body normaly produces and does so at its peak from pueberty until 30 something and then starts a decrease from there on out.
Aids in rebuilding tissue and recovery. Among many other benefits. But does have side effects if abused, such as hardening of the arteires (sp) abnormal bown and organ growth and many other things.

Well, I can't give you pros and cons because I don't know what the intended use is and who would be using it. Do they already have normal HGH production, or do they have abnormalities they are trying to correct? Or, are they intending to use it in order to achieve fitness goals?
What I can tell you is that it does not cause hardening of arteries but it can cause some carpal tunnel syndrome. Most of the people who experience hardening of arteries were using HCG or HGH in conjunction with a cocktail of other anabolic compounds such as Andriol, which DOES cause hardening of arteries. It also does not cause abnormal bone growth (acromeglia), but it can speed of the progression of the disease in people who already have it. Here's a little more on pros and cons:
Side Effects:
Hypoglycemia- due to lowered insulin levels.
Acromeglia- (abnormal bone growth) GH does not cause it, but if you are predisposed to it, it will speed it up.
GH gut- if predisposed and taking large doses of GH
Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
Soreness in Joints
Benefits of GH:
New Muscle Cells
Mood Enhancement
Smoothing and improving the skin
Leanness, it is a potent fat burner
Joint and ligament strengthening
In people with low testosterone or sperm count, HCG is used to send the testes into overdrive, basically forcing them to manufacture more testosterone to bring those levels back up to a normal level, and to produce more consistent sperm. That's why it's used as a testosterone booster in people with low test that are wanting to have children, such as I was, as moving to Hormone Replacement Therapy with testosterone injections, gels or creams causes the sperm production in the body to shut down, rendering the user sterile. HCG or HGH won't boost the testosterone of a person with already high testosterone levels, though.

I'm working overnight shift for the next 3 weeks so I was thinking about going for a run twice on my cardio days:
8:30pm-6:30am Work
7:00am-2:00pm Sleep
2:00pm Eat
3:30pm Run
4:30pm-6:30pm Eat and Nap
7:00pm Run 2
8:30pm Back to work
Sure, I'll have no life on those days but w/e; it's 2 days out of the week. Idk how energized I'll be in time for run #2 but we'll see

Hmmm interesting. I was just curious because my family and I were having a discussion and I we were curious to what HGH really does. It doesn't seem as harmful as anabolic steroids but it does seem harmful to a person's health. But it appears that it varies from each individual and from the amount used. But it seems that some of the info that I have found varies so I am unsure what is true and what isn't true.

I got back from vacation on Saturday which really rechaged my batteries. I took the week off only going on a jog with my girlfriend on the beach. I was really anxious to get back in the gym today so I did chest/tri in between production meetings. I changed up my routine from 4 sets of 6 to 3 sets of 5 and felt great. I thought after a week off I would come back weaker but I upped the weight quite a bit with one fewer set. I have a feeling I'm really going to like this new routine.
would that cost extra?? :o :p
Yeah easter break treated me well with some good food and a bit of fun fod but seeing as i need to put the weight on it was fine. I hit the weights today and i feel amazing I think I may actually start taking 2 shakes a day now to up my protein intake.

So my wife was watching this show called "bulging brides" where women who are about to get married realize they dont fit into their wedding dresses too well. So they go on a workout plan and diet for 6 weeks before the wedding to drop a few inches.
I decided to watch and see what they would have the woman do. They did a lot of bodyweight work and an obstacle course and of course burpees! They later upgraded to some resistance training (I saw some overhead presses, 1 arm dumbbell rows and more good movements). They did some stair runs and trail runs to keep cardio interesting.
Then came the shocking part. The diet. They wanted this lady to do all this work and eat 840 calories a day. Im surprised she didnt faint during the exercise. This was broken down into 3 meals, no snacks or anything. Breakfast was like 275 calories, lunch was like 300 and dinner was 265. Crazy!
Anyways, just thought I would share this bad diet instruction.

running after working out is good too...
Only if you keep it to a brief run. Your body stays anabolic during weight training for roughly ~60-70 minutes, after which you burn through your glucogen stores and your body starts looking for the most bio-available fuel to burn, which happens to be your muscle. You can make this window a little bit longer by using a good BCAA supplement before, during and after your workouts to protect your muscle and extend it to as much as 90 minutes, but usually less. But if you're working out for an hour and then going for a 30-60 minute run afterwards, you're basically running on fumes since you burned up your glucogen stores while lifting and are probably undoing any hard work you did in the process. Better to do some light cardio for 10-15 minutes post-workout and save the heavy running for a day you're not lifting.

Having more muscle will speed up your metabolism and cause more burning of bodyfat, but just drinking protein shakes isn't going to make you lose bodyfat. Especially if you aren't doing cardio and have a crappy diet.

It only burns fat if you're still within your anabolic window. Otherwise, you turn catabolic and start burning muscle. What you're trying to do is honestly more about diet than it is extra cardio.

You should lift too. I lost 70+ pounds 8 or so years ago with an extreme program (***DO NOT FOLLOW THIS: IT IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE OF HOW WEIGHTS HELP BURN FAT) of lifting 4 days a week, running 6 (running after I lifted for 30 min) and eating a diet so clean, you would have thought I lived on the island in LOST with no candy or white bread products in sight.
Anyway, after about 4 months I went from 265 to 195 (lowering all the way to 175 before I wised up and fixed my diet and workout).
Basically, the point is if I had done cardio alone I never would have done as well. Muscle burns fat. Build more muscle, you'll burn more fat. Simple. Listen to jag, he knows what its all about.

You're doing full body workouts every time you work out which is four days in a row, right? Let me ask you something, then. Since we know that muscle growth and strength increases come from hitting a muscle hard and then giving it sufficient nutrition and time to heal and repair itself, when are you giving your muscles sufficient time to heal and repair themselves if you're working the same muscle groups every single day for four days straight?

You really only need to hit each body part real heavy once a week to stimulate optimal growth since it takes ~72 hours for a muscle group to recover after a heavy weight training workout. You'd be better off going to a three or four day split. Maybe something like this:
Monday: Chest & Tri's
Tuesday: Legs
Wednesday: Back
Thursday: Shoulders & Bi's
You could do your heavier cardio on Friday and Saturday and then take Sunday off. I can help you map out some appropriate exercises for each of those days if you'd like (how you stack/order your lift routine is important as well). Just start by telling me what you're doing on each of your body parts right now.

not sure what all the lifts are called but here goes..
superset the groups
-bicep curls
-triceps with a weight behind my head
-forearms by grabbing 2 20lbs dumbbells and doing wrist curls on a bench
-benchpress
-benchflys? laying on bench doing flys for chest
-benchflys again? but laying on my stomache and lifting for back...
-one knee on bench one hand(same side) back paralell and lift straight up for back (do both sides)
-shoulder press
-get 8lb dumbbells and lift straight in front of me and straight to the sides for shoulders
-leg extensions
-leg curls i guess? for hammys
^^^ each lift 3sets x 12reps...sometimes 15 reps.
- calf raises 3x 25-30
leg ext and curls and calf raises are all superset.
then i do an ab machine 3x15...
more abs lay on my back, legs straight out lifted off the ground a few inches and crunch 15 times, one knee on other knee-crunch to side, both sides 15 times. legs straight out up a few inches, hands striahgt out above my head and crunch (try to touch my fingers to my toes) V-Abs i think? then normal crunch 15 times
i normally do that ab workout 2-3 times depending on how i feel.

leg ext and curls and calf raises are all superset.
then i do an ab machine 3x15...
more abs lay on my back, legs straight out lifted off the ground a few inches and crunch 15 times, one knee on other knee-crunch to side, both sides 15 times. legs straight out up a few inches, hands striahgt out above my head and crunch (try to touch my fingers to my toes) V-Abs i think? then normal crunch 15 times
i normally do that ab workout 2-3 times depending on how i feel.
Overtraining, man. Big time. Take a look at the link in my sig (helpful diet info there, too). The exercises in the sample three day split there (as well as the instruction on how to use them) are pretty much the cream of the crop. We could easily swap those around to a four day split. But you're trying to do too much in too little time. You also aren't hitting your legs for ****. Time to learn how to use the squat rack. And dump all the supersets. They're a nice diversion and useful in certain situations, but I wouldn't ever base an entire workout on them. One exercise at a time, as heavy as you can go for the exercise for three sets of 8-10 reps. By the end of that last set, you should feel like that muscle group is just about to give out on you.

It will help in building more muscle. More muscle burns fat. But until you've got your diet dialed in perfectly, You'll probably never be rid of those irritating little areas, to be honest.

I've always wanted to do a Krav Maga course. Looks like a hell of a workout and some practical experience from what I have seen in training videos of the workouts that they do. It would be a good compliment to my ground skills, I think. My first instinct in a fight is to shoot on a guy, drag him down and choke him out and they really preach staying upright and taking on as many opponents at once as you can. Let me know how it goes, man.

jag what do u think of jump rope and stuff like that for cardio rather then a treadmil, eliptical or jogging?
It depends on the goal. If you think you can jump rope for 45 minutes straight at a sustained rate to drop bodyfat, go for it. Most people are going to find that damn near impossible, though, whereas an elliptical will allow you that sustained, steady rate of cardio. Jogging will allow that as well, but it's much harder on the joints, feet and knees and if you have problems with any of those (like I do), jogging is something you may not be able to do. Jump rope is an incredible straight cardio conditioning tool, though, and can help you build up your cardio capacity. Makes for a badass warmup before lifting, too, as long as you don't overdo it.

Mmmm....I'm not real keen on recommending back exercises to people who have back problems. Have you been to a back specialist or even a chiropractor to get yourself checked out properly and make sure you don't have something really, really out of whack back there? Strenuous exercise on a f**ked up back can be a very, very bad thing (like...start doing a lot of arm exercises because you'll be in a wheel-chair bad).

It looks like this-
-4 x 50 push ups
-4 x 5 individual arm curls each arm (20kg)
-4 x 10 double grip arm extensions behind head (20kg)
-3 x 10 flys (15kg each arm)
-3 x 10 horizontal chest curls (15kg each arm)
Preceding and following my workout I will be drinking 'Body Fortress Whey Protein' banana flavour powder mixed with water.
During my workout I will mostly be rocking 50's Doo Wop and 80's punk. Following my workout I will be staring into the bathroom mirror for a good 30 mins for a celebratory pose down admiring my hulking physique.

What equipment do you have access to? Hard to recommend lifts without knowing that. I would do Chest/Tri's on Monday and Back/Bi's on Friday, though. Back workouts, especially if we get you deadlifting, are very taxing and you'll need the extra recovery time. You wouldn't want to hit your back hard at the first of the week and then be wiped out for your other lift days because of it. As for abs, I personally do mine every lift day before I lift as a part of my warmup (ten minutes on the elliptical and then abs), mostly because I just like to get the damn things out of the way and if I put it off until after my lifting I might find myself forgoing ab-work. PWO cardio I tend to limit to 10-15 minutes, depending on how quickly I get my lifting completed. Remember, we want to stay in that ~60-70 minute anabolic window and not let our workouts go much over that. For non-lift day cardio, 45-60 minutes of high intensity cardio should be fine.

A bike would be fine for non-lift day cardio. So would jogging. Since you are moving to a three day split and have access to all that equipment, why don't you give the sample routine in my sig a try? It's a good one and will produce results. All exercises are ordered specifically to maximize effectiveness, so don't switch them around.

I almost always run in the morning before eating (there are opposing viewpoints on this as well, but this is the way I do it). But resistance training at that time is a bit different. Like Jag said, try to get something of value inside you before you hit the weights.

for the triceps you didnt understand : knees bent about shoulder width apart, back paralell, or as close to paralell as u can, to the ground...holding dumbbells (elbows next toside of ribcage) extend back ..kinda like skiing, dunno what its called but it works my triceps good.
and hold a weight behind your head, elbows next to your temples, and left the weight straight above your head kinda.
just got done working out, i must say my triceps are exhausted, my chest is dead. i could hardly finish my last lifts.
and the 10 minute bike afterwards tires u out completely, but i def feel loosened up.

Kickbacks? Is that what you're talking about?

Perfect. Sounds like you hit it hard with the right amount of weight. You should be barely able to finish that last set or so on each exercise.

Well, it's back to my regular routine today, the three days of rest was nice, my body seems to be getting stronger and stronger.

I'd rather see you do Close Grip Bench or even bench dips if you don't have access to a dip bar than kickbacks. Kickbacks suck ass.

Wait until squat day. You'll be cursing me. Especially if you throw in a set of widowmakers after you run your normal sets. Sounds like you hit it with appropriate intensity and weight. Nice job.

Usually I just sleep my ass off which works for me because it's helping my body to recover. Rest days can be the best sometimes, especially if you've been working out a lot, which I've been doing. I've been giving my ass a physical beating.

ah DIPS! thats what i was forgetting....
the kickbacks seem to work well for my triceps but it puts pressure on my shoulders for some reason, so ill sub in dips.
i play baseball so i gotta change some things around a little :( but i hear some lifts like dumbbell bench instead of benchpress is better bc of range of motion, which is right down my alley for baseball.
another big thing for me is form...during baseball workouts we never did good form...just last week and today doing lifts with as close to perfect form as i could absolutely killed me. such a better workout

Form. Is. Everything.
And, yeah, DB presses will give a better ROM on your lift than a barbell.

I'd actually like to see those movies but strangely I never have.
As for weight, I weighed in at 163 and about a week later when I weighed it said 160. I hope it's still at 160 or it's less.

Don't get all hung up on the numbers on the scale, guys. Go by what you see in the mirror and pics (a great tool to use for yourself to really gauge progress is to take pics on a monthly basis; cameras catch things you won't see in the mirror), and by how you feel.

I'm 14, there are a lot of things I'd like to see but I haven't gotten to see. They were showing the Rocky movies repeatedly and when I finally wanted to watch 'em, they stopped showing them, kinda annoyed the hell out of me.

Why is it when I look down at my stomach I look sort of fat or it looks like my stomach hangs out but when I look in the mirror I can see abs? Is it like this for anyone else here?
i dont like the whole weight/ height scale in doctors offices and gyms..
it says for someone my height of 5'7, your obese if u weigh over like 160... which is BS. i guess it doesnt take into account muscle mass and athletes in general.
