Why is it when I look down at my stomach I look sort of fat or it looks like my stomach hangs out but when I look in the mirror I can see abs? Is it like this for anyone else here?
well distance is one thing...you look more defined looking in a mirror a few feet away rather then looking straight down a foot away ya know?

So, basically just go by what I see in the mirror, right?
i dont like the whole weight/ height scale in doctors offices and gyms..
it says for someone my height of 5'7, your obese if u weigh over like 160... which is BS. i guess it doesnt take into account muscle mass and athletes in general.
I hate that as well because it's just giving someone a label without knowing everything that should be taken into consideration like muscle mass. I put in my weight, waist, and neck and a website said my bodyfat is 21% and then below said 15%. These were my two options as far as what my bodyfat could be. I'm pretty sure it couldn't be 21% because it was lower than 21% back when I was eating heavy junk food. I think I got the rating mostly based on my weight.
As for Rocky, I'm sure I'll check out all of those, the franchise seems like it was pretty good. Btw, how good was the newest Rocky movie?

Better than 4 or 5 worse than the rest. Overall the franchise is ok. The first is by far the best but by making two Stallone basically ruined the whole meaning of the first one. :down
Oh and he's signed a deal to make another one

I'm 5'6" and ~197 these days (I was up to 215 for awhile) and my doctor has always laughed when I tell her I'm probably going to die any day now going by the obesity index. Cory, I'd recommend you focus on just learning your new routine and getting acquainted with the basics just yet. X-Reps are more of an advanced technique. We can work those in later on. You should see some pretty excellent gains over the next several months with the new routine, anyway.

Its amazing the folks that cant do this exercise. When I was at the academy, I saw a guy doing bench press that looked like a monster. He was probably close to my height (5' 11"), but was a good 225 of solid muscle. If you looked at the 2 of us, you could easily say that I am the one that doesnt work out. I weigh 185. Anyways, I did weighted pullups to start my workout while he did bench press. I never saw him go heavy, and I never saw him struggle. I came over to do weighted dips after the pullups. I decided to just go with 45 lbs, since I was going to do sets of 12 or more reps. I did a few and he came up and asked about my dip belt. I told him I was done and he could use it and he said, he might try later. He got on the dip station and struggled, shimmying his body back and forth in an attempt to push up and finnaly dropped off and cussed. He couldnt get 1 rep of his own bodyweight! I was like WTF! He came up and said something to me that day about my strength that made me feel pretty good too, especially coming from him!
I still cant understand why he couldnt get a single dip of his bodyweight.

Most guys like that just do an assload of benching and that's really about it. Won't find 'em in the squat rack. Won't find 'em doing deads or cleans & presses. You'll find them either doing curls or bench, and that's about it. :down

I think the reason most people don't do dips is b/c they're afraid to let people see them struggle on what looks like it should be an easy lift.

Don't wait TOO long after waking to eat. Especially if you're lifting. You're already catabolic from not having eaten for so long and if your body is trying to heal itself from heavy weight training, you need the nutrition more than you need the empty-stomach cardio. I wouldn't wait until after class and then cardio to eat, personally. The downsides far outweigh the upsides.

I go to the gym in the morning before I eat because I like to get there between 7-8am so if I eat say around 7-8am that means I have to wait until 9-11am before I can go to the gym. So I hit the gym then I eat as soon as I get home.

The current weights I have have 8.8 lbs (two of them) and 14.3 (two of those as well) which I've all put on a 40 lb bar of steel. So, that would mean I'm lifting 85 lbs if you include the bar. If that's too easy for you to bench than def. move up. It's impossible to tell you how high to go as that is all in your hands. That's why I personally like going to the gym, all that stuff is there for you and buying everything can get expensive. Thats about typical. Every now and then, you can find the same type set for about $120 (Olympic bar and weight totalling 300lbs). I usually see them more often for that price at Sports Authority and the like. Check for coupons too, often I see $25 off a purchase of $100 or more, stuff like that.
Now, you can check craigslist for your area, some people practically give away weight. I got a super power rack for $175 and that included the bar.
I have also found some steals at yard sales, check around!

Read a really interesting article this afternoon about how eating large amounts of raw red onion can improve your vascularity and blood-oxygen transport creating incredible vascularity and making you look PUMPED all the time. Unfortunately, my browser crashed just as I was getting to the end of it and I can't find the damn article again. :cmad: At any rate, they were recommending eating a whole red onion per day, preferably in once sitting, to maximize your resting state "pump" and vascularity and to truly gain the most out of your workouts and REALLY get a major pump from those. Found it interesting. Thought I'd share.

Well then you should up that weight that you posted about earlier. Do you have an olympic bar or one of those smaller ones? You prolly only need more weight for benching so go off of what you do now and figure how much more weight you need. Since starting back lifting in Jan. I have upped my bench by around 50lbs so if you were going to go off of that you should be able to up your collection for pretty cheap. And it'll get you by for a while.

How much should I go up? I currently lift 85 lbs including the bar so I'm guessing I should go past 100 lbs now (50 lb weights each on each end of the bar).

Well, basically, my routine is just like the one in jag's sig, if you've read it. If not, I work chest/tris on Monday, shoulders/legs on Wednesday, Abs/Biceps on Friday and cardio on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I do eat junk food, I'm not going to lie, but I'll try to do enough cardio to work off previous calories so that I'm not adding on a bunch of weight which strangely works. My stomach usually looks sort of flat and it's much tighter than before I started my diet which I did for nearly two weeks straight. I also try to sleep for about seven to eight hours on days when I use weights but if not I stay up a little longer. For the most part I don't get eight hours but I need to start organizing weight training days so I get it done in time enough for me to get at least seven hours of sleep. What basically happened yesterday is I barely got through my work out and usually I can burst through Monday's work out pretty quick. I was wondering, should I take a break from weight training and focus on cardio or take a break from working out everywhere?

What do you eat? How many calories are you taking in? Amount of protein? Carbs? Fat? Ratio? How long do you do cardio for? What do you do for cardio? Are you lifting heavy weights and low reps lows sets? Are you lifting light weights high reps high sets? Are you lifting heavy weights high reps high sets?
How much is some junk food? A candy bar a day? A week? Do you log and keep track of your workouts?

I try to take in at least close to 2000 calories but I haven't been keeping track lately. Also, I'm not big on keeping track of carbs, protein, fat, and ratio. As for cardio, I do it for at least 20-30 minutes & and I would say that I'm lifting heavy weights and I guess low reps since I'm only doing 10 per set.

A six-pack is generally just for looks.
So, the fact that my stomach is somewhat flat and I look a hell of a lot better in the mirror than two years ago without having a six pack doesn't mean I'm not in good shape, right? I used to think that a six pack showed how good of shape you're in but I now see it isn't. I kind of think I've overworked my abs more than any other part of my body.

Hell, I stopped caring about having a six pack myself, I just want a tight core that is stronger than what it is now. Right now I'm really power hungry and all I care about is being in better shape and being the strongest I can be.
Btw, I've read that the healthier you are, the more it helps you grow (as in height, I mean). Is that true?

Ok, fair enough. Well personally to me it sounds like if you are getting that tired from working out, I would lower the intensity a little bit. But that is just my opinion. You are still young and growing obviously so you don't want to do anything to hurt your body right now being that it is a crucial, no the most crucial part in its development.
Nothing wrong with working out or working out hard, but don't exhaust yourself to the point where you are tired or weak the day after.
In order to make your muscle grow and develop you need to eat protein, lots of it. 1-2g per lb of body weight. So for you that means at least 160g of protein a day. Lots of carbs and good amount of healthy fat. That is if you want to get BIG.
So, flat stomachs are better, right?
Not better necessarily, it just depends on how you train and what you're training for. Read my above post.

Smith Machines are hard to calibrate on weight because of the fact that they're on a fixed plane, have mechanisms that affect friction, and take a lot of the balance out of the movement you'd be doing yourself otherwise. I personally avoid Smith Machines like the plague because they force you to use IT'S Range Of Motion instead of adapting to yours, which can cause injuries.

Yeah, my right arm was really feeling funky this one time I was using it. Have to adjust the seat just right and all. Felt like my shoulder was gonna pop out and I ended up in this awkward position for the last push.
I like it because I don't need a spotter though and the gym at school is just so damned busy.

Free weights > than Smith Machines for the vast majority of lifts. Aside from the reasons I listed above, freee weights also recruit support and motor muscles in order to hoist and balance the weight so you are working those as well as the primary target muscle group. Smith Machines do the job of the support and motor muscles for you so you don't get the benefit of working those when using the Smith. Aside from that, they do increase risk of injury by forcing you to follow it's Range Of Motion. Better to back the weight off to a manageable level and use the free weights, IMHO.

jag, my should press machine has 2 different pairs of handles. one makes you lift pretty much straight up, but the pair closest to me feels like its behind my head some on the lifts... which is better? or does it not matter?

Lift straight up. Behind the head exercises for presses or pull-ups are a no-no. WAY too much strain on the rotator cuffs.

Well, part of that is because he is from the Arnold era. These guys that compete today do things differently and it shows. I preferred the way Arnold and those guys were built compared to Coleman, Cutler myself as well.
Yeah, because they seemed to have more respect for the business. These guys now just think all about the money. Sure, you should want to make money but I firmly believe that whatever you're involved in you need to have a passion for it.
Hey, an improvement's an improvement. :oldrazz: I'm not trying to bench 800 lbs just yet but going from 100 lbs (I don't count the bar since I have no idea how much it weighs) to 120 is a big deal for me and even that feels kind of light so I may add another 20 next week. (Started with two 25s on each end then 25 + 35 and now to move on to 25 + 45).
Maybe I'm doing it wrong and can really lift more. Could be why I'm not seeing much physical development in the upper chest or even really feeling it hurt as badly as my other body parts.
I understand you completely. Once I went from 20 to 26 lbs late last year, I felt really happy because I was getting starting with a new amount of weight. Then, I went from 26 to close to 50 lbs (not including the bar) which was a bit strain on my body for a while but I kept lifting those weights until I got stronger and eventually I got strong enough to lift them no sweat. It's all about having patience and working hard to achieve said desired results.
As I told you before, just keep working at it, no matter what current imperfections you have. You're still doing great from what I can tell. :word:

Thanks, I added in some extra exercises like jumping jacks which I did in between each set and some push-ups and sit-ups at the end of the exercise, once I finished all of my leg/shoulder work outs. I didn't want to exercise for less than 20 minutes so all in all, with stretches added in, I'd say I worked out for at least 22-24 minutes. Ah. Well it is definitely good, intense, calisthenic work and with the way you're dieting it should keep the fat low. I always ate like a pig and never went above 180 because of it (until I started going less frequently) so it should keep things in balance and keep that six pack there.

My body works best when I lift then run, if I run first then lift I am too fatigued and can not lift as much or as hard. This is usually true as well for most people.
According to articles the best way to lose weight is to run intervals. Say around a track, you would sprint the short curves then jog the long stretches. Or on a tread mill sprint for 30 seconds then jog for two minutes and mix it up so forth.
The best indicator usually is sweating, (but for people like me which may have to do with my metabolism) I sweat almost instantly upon any type of semi intensive cardio activity.
Make sure your target heart rate is up high enough to burn fat, around 65%.

When I run my hear rate is pretty high when I run. So running that about 30 mins after lifting is good? Also the days I don't lift should I still do 30 mins I should I compensate and run like 40 or 50 mins?
after u lift cardio for like 10-15 minutes...on cardio days do 45 to an hour

You don't want your heart rate too high. 60-65% will get you into the fat burning zone, 75-80% will get you into the cardio zone.

Hey, any of you know how to get rid of that bloated stomach look? You know where your stomach is just big and rock hard? I really hate it and of course it's only worse when I eat. Not sure if I will explain this the right way. But essentially you need to train your inner abdominal muscles. The most popular exercise I have seen for this is the vacuum exercise technique although I am sure there are many others.

This is what I was walking about Cory and Jag. Not sure how effective it is since I don't really incorporate it. I've done them before but not for more than two or three weeks at one time.
But I don't really have a problem with how far my stomach extends.

Vacuums are a good stomach exercise, but I don't know that they'd really flatten your stomach, to be honest.
Ask Jag how much he eats.......and spends on food monthly  :D.
Eating ~3200 calories a day right now. Was up to ~4000 calories for awhile, but I've backed it off a bit. Yeah...it ain't cheap, but we buy a lot of food in bulk and don't eat processed food (or eat out very often, either) so it helps keep the costs down
Use fitday.com if you haven't already to track your food intake.

the way i eat now, i wake up....eat a bowl of cereal. maybe an apple between breakfast and lunch...a lean cuisine for lunch (im a broke college student :cmad:) then from about 130 on i eat grapes, apples, carrots or broccoli to snack on til i eat dinner...dinner is usually a big salad with meat, or a 6 inch on wheat sub.
if i eat a early dinner ill have a snack of fruit or vegetables later.
all i drink is water, well water and the milk with the cereal....basically i get about 80-90 oz of water a day.
Breakfast ought to be some complex carbs (oatmeal) and protein (eggs or a protein shake). Lean Cuisine's are crap; full of preservatives and junk. How about some boiled eggs, lean low-sodium lunch meat on HFCS-free whole-wheat bread, some fruit and some cheese? Veggies are good snacks, but a good protein shake will help fill in the blanks on those, as Bah suggested. As for dinner, it sounds like you're buying that pre-made from a restaurant some place. Why not buy some bulk frozen chicken, some bulk rice, some bulk beans, and cook your own dinners? It'll be cheaper and more nutritious.

Yup. It'll likely be more than 2000 calories depending on your height and weight, age, and fitness level. Did you use the calculators in the diet section of my sig to figure out your ideal caloric intake and macronutrient split, yet? You wanna be big, it takes fuel.
jag
Yep, it's true. That's what I at least try to shoot for eating over 3000 calories. There's no downside to that for me, I love eating. :word: :hehe:

Got a Sam's Club card. Costco, too. At any rate, get creative. Make food for the week in advance and keep it in your frig in your dorm room. Surely the student cafeteria has some dining options you could take advantage of as well.

I don't know that stomach vacuums, as Bah suggested, are going to help you. It might, but may not, either. This could be a result of your diet or even genetics. Can you map out your diet for me?
jag
Well let's see.
Breakfast
Cereal or oatmeal interchangeably with orange juice and a fruit or yogurt interchangeably
Lunch
Depending on what they are serving at school I alter between pasta, meatballs, chicken fries/"chicken fingers", or lasagna and some lemonade.
Dinner
Usually either chicken breasts, chicken nuggets, rice, or a combination of the three. Sometimes I'm in the mood for hot dogs though. All of these I eat in LARGE amount when I do. For example when I eat hot dogs there's about 6 or when I eat chicken breasts or nuggets I pile them on and go to town with the ketchup next to me. Grapefruit juice to wash it down. I love my citrus.
Snacks
Whenever I'm hungry I grab a fruit or yogurt or both at times depending on how hungry I am.
Weekends when I'm out with my friends or something I'll head over to Subways and and get a footlong pepperoni, cheddar, pickles, and spicey mustard sub. Throw in a cookie and a small lemonade. About once a month I'll head over to Burger King or Dominos though. Get a large pepperoni pizza all to myself or a triple whopper and chicken fries with some sprite.
I tend to eat in bulk a lot (like the entire thing of bananas for a snack). This is as in depth with my diet as I can get. :oldrazz: My stomach is definitely not flabby but I hate the way it sticks out past my chest (like the top part of my stomach). And when I eat it looks like an alien's going to pop out right in the middle of my torso or something.

I have a question: If I ate junk food yesterday and then do a workout and then eat junk food the next day and do cardio, what am I working off? Yesterday's junk food, today's junk food, or both?
got biceps n back tomorrow morning

It really is a non-issue to try to figure out what day's junk food you're "working off". During your cardio, you'll be burning whatever fat has accumulate up to that point.
