I think I hurt my stomach today. I was hitting this new ab machine at our gym today pretty hard. 4th set, 8th rep, I felt like I got a cramp in my upper abdomen. I go outside and try to work it off... and up to now its still there.

I think I'm going to stay away from that machine from now on. Its waaay too tempting to throw a lot of weight on there because it feels comfortable at first... but in the end I guess it was too much for me.

It really is a non-issue to try to figure out what day's junk food you're "working off". During your cardio, you'll be burning whatever fat has accumulate up to that point.

Exactly Spoons-Joker, it doesnt work the way you apparently think that it does.
Imagine throwing a piece of paper in a big compacting dumpster every day for a year (this is an example of you adding a little fat over your lifetime). Then imagine you get to take a piece out (bc you begin to exercise). Its not like you reach in and grab out the last piece you threw in.

I just wanted to know as I wasn't sure. But, yesterday I had a brownie and three small bags of chips. On Wednesday, however, I didn't have any junk food so I was just hypothetically speaking.

Good analogy, Devil. Fat loss and gain is cumulative. If you eat garbage, it goes into the bin. What gets burned off when you exercise may not be that same bit of garbage you put into the bin most recently. It will also take far longer to burn off the garbage if you're eating it on a consistent or regular basis (taking a day off from eating garbage doesn't mean you eat that stuff infrequently), because you're eating far more garbage than your body can actually burn off. Thus you get a cumulative buildup of fat, toxins, triglycerides and other bodily nasties over time.

Exquisite back and tri's workout last night. First full week back on the iron pills felt great!

Not sure if this has been brought up before, but....

Why are so many so called "fitness experts" misinformed about what exercises to do and not to do. Ones that are potentially harmful and so on?

I mean why aren't certain exercises not all around considered dangerous or potentially harmful or we do not endorse this but perform at your own risk? Like pull ups or lat pull downs behind the head?

Hey, Jag, posted up my diet by the way. Hope you can help me out with the stomach sticking out issue. I don't want to have that weird power lifter stomach (no offense to power lifters).

jaguarr
04-04-2008, 11:05 AM
Well let's see.

Breakfast
Cereal or oatmeal interchangeably with orange juice and a fruit or yogurt interchangeably

Lunch
Depending on what they are serving at school I alter between pasta, meatballs, chicken fries/"chicken fingers", or lasagna and some lemonade.

Dinner
Usually either chicken breasts, chicken nuggets, rice, or a combination of the three. Sometimes I'm in the mood for hot dogs though. All of these I eat in LARGE amount when I do. For example when I eat hot dogs there's about 6 or when I eat chicken breasts or nuggets I pile them on and go to town with the ketchup next to me. Grapefruit juice to wash it down. I love my citrus.

Snacks
Whenever I'm hungry I grab a fruit or yogurt or both at times depending on how hungry I am.

Weekends when I'm out with my friends or something I'll head over to Subways and and get a footlong pepperoni, cheddar, pickles, and spicey mustard sub. Throw in a cookie and a small lemonade. About once a month I'll head over to Burger King or Dominos though. Get a large pepperoni pizza all to myself or a triple whopper and chicken fries with some sprite.

I tend to eat in bulk a lot (like the entire thing of bananas for a snack). This is as in depth with my diet as I can get. :oldrazz: My stomach is definitely not flabby but I hate the way it sticks out past my chest (like the top part of my stomach). And when I eat it looks like an alien's going to pop out right in the middle of my torso or something.

Hmmm....could be partially genetics. Some people's stomachs just stick out a little bit past their chest. I also see quite a bit of sodium in your diet and that can certainly be something that will cause bloating. Also seeing quite a bit of grease, processed and fried food in there; also things that can cause bloating. In addition, if you're eating and drinking in large volume throughout the day, you're going to see more bloat than the average person. Most bodybuilders have this issue. Don't get fixated on guys with ripped stomachs you see on TV or in magazines. They've dieted down specifically for the photo-shoot and probably used some diuretics and laxatives to ensure that their stomach is super flat and showing all it's muscles for that purpose. They don't look like that most of the time.

I have some grip equipment and that definitely works forearms. When I do my slegehammer swings, my forearms are usually BURNING afterwards. Obviously reverse curls are the typical choice, and they work well, but there are a lot of other fun options out there.
A friend of mine is big into strongman stuff and basically has just about everything Ironmind offers for grip work and his forearms are SICCCCCCCCCCCCCK!

I've also read that with all of the arm work a person will do there is no need to work your forearms really.

A lot of the time they will get worked indirectly through other exercises- arm curls etc.
I don't do individual forearm stuff because they get worked in this way.
That, and I am not training for Mr Olympia.

And man does it feel good to be over 190 lbs again. :yay: I'm actually about 3 lbs from my goal of 195 and I haven't gained any fat. If anything I've been losing fat.

My friend told me about Iron Mind's website. How do you like it?

They have plenty of very durable high quality equipment. I have several of their Captains of Crush grippers. If anyone doesnt know the difference between a COC gripper and your standard sports store gripper, I have a story. Everyone here knows JStorm. He came over after I had gotten the Trainer model, the #1 and the #1.5. I handed him a sports store gripper and asked him to close it. He said no problem and opened and shut it like it was no problem, because it wasnt. It is probably 25 lbs of resistance. I asked him to close the trainer model after that (which is one of the lightest models they offer), he thought it would be no problem, but couldnt close it. The trainer model has 100 lbs of resistance.
So, it is very different that those cheap sports store models that just about everyone could close.

But when I go to my friends' house, he usually has me go through a "grip gauntlet" which includes Ironminds-Titans telegraph, COC grippers, Go-really-grip machine, Hardy handshake, the heavy hammer, some Imtug grippers and some nail bending!

You could always get/use one of those bars where you turn and turn to lift the weight on a rope. That works your forearms really well. I know a lot of golfers and baseball players that use that as part of their training.

Wanna work your forearms? Farmers Walks with 45# plates. I usually just throw in a few sets of forearm curls after my bicep workout. With all the other grip work I get during the week doing my other workouts, any more than that would be too much for me. I have a light case of carpal tunnel syndrome so I can't overdo it with the grip training or I'll just aggravate that. The bit of grip training that I get from my regular routine seems to help with that carpal tunnel syndrome. Anything much more than that just seems to make it worse.

I think this is the season where America starts to get fitness crazy; like they do every year around this time. You know, everyone wants to look good in their bikini :whatever:. What kills me about that is that when you start working-out , lets say around March/April, you don't really start to see results until the bikini is season ending. Whereas if all these lazy ****s had been working out during the fall and the winter, by the following summer they'd be in the shape they wanted. Go figure.

Barbell benching is something I rarely do, and I always have a spotter on my dumbell presses, especially now that I'm working with 90s and 100s in both hands (they need to buy more weights at my gym). I find barbell bench to be a very overrated exercise that gets most of it's praise for being the ego lift everyone made you do in high school. Obviously, for a powerlifter it's important because it's a lift you must master for competition, but for bodybuilding it's become absolutely useless to me. Me and a few of my BBing friends joke about getting the "how much do you bench question" since we rarely know the answer.

I was...

The stack I was using was a stack for "leaness" (is that a word?).

It was primobolin and viramone with some winstrol thrown in. I would never touch winstrol now! It is well documented as a carcinogen. Primo is the safest of all steroids, viramone is a close second. The stack I was using for building. Was testavirone, Oxybolin (oral) and Sustanon. Again I would never use Oxies now, for the same reason previously stated. Many far safer alternatives exist!

Alright guys, I've got a question. I've recently started to work out again (for real this time) and I was wondering about something. I am trying to build my chest muscles, and aside from diet, I wanted to know what is the best way to do so? Are push-ups really the best way to build chest muscles? How did some of y'all build your pecs?

Incline Bench press, flys and wide grip weighted push ups (where you hang the weights off your belt by a chain imo). It varies from person to person. I love flat bench but I never see as good results.

I was...

The stack I was using was a stack for "leaness" (is that a word?).

It was primobolin and viramone with some winstrol thrown in. I would never touch winstrol now! It is well documented as a carcinogen. Primo is the safest of all steroids, viramone is a close second. The stack I was using for buildin. Was testavirone, Oxybolin (oral) and Sustanon. Again I would never use Oxies now either for the same reason previously stated. Many far safer alternatives exist!

Ugh, that oral one probably tasted horrible, no?

Push-ups will get your gains but you'll plateau quickly. You need to do some press work; either barbells or dumbells. Incline, flat, decline, all that ****

I really don't believe in decline.. However it's all what works for you. Their is no magic formula for everyone! imo anyway!

Thanks Spoons and Whirlysplat. I do the incline bench press from time to time, but I always heard that push-ups were always the most effective way. I guess not.

I will add weighted dips to your list. I stopped doing flat bench awhile ago. It's a vanity lift if you aren't a full-blown powerlifter. Most people are horribly underdeveloped in their upper chest from fixating on flat bench too much. Incline hits more of the chest overall, including the upper portion, which flat bench does not hit as much (if at all, depending on your form and technique).

I am sure we all hear olive oil is great for you. My biology professor told us this too.
Butter is not good in large or often amounts.
Margarine is supossed to be even worse.
Ketchup is mostly processed sugar from what I hear.
Salt and pepper good just not too much salt.
Ranch, probably worse than butter
Balsamic vinegar pretty good from what I hear
Italian dressing pretty good from what I hear

I suppose it's to be expected since you're supposed to learn proper form on the rowing machine before you go and pop your back out and it was my first time, but should I be working at a pretty fast clip on it? I just think it's better to be doing cardio using my arms somewhat, since they don't really do anything while I'm running.

what all did you do? Im doing legs 2night,

My legs/shoulder routine looks like this lately:

Warmup:
10 minutes on elliptical
Heavy Cable Crunches - 3x20
Light stretching and loosening up

Workout:

ATG Squats - I warm up with a set of 10 at a lighter weight, then run three sets of ten (3x10) at much heavier weight with a ten pound progressive loading approach added to each set (I add ten pounds on each set). After I finish the last set, I throw in 6-8 X-Reps before re-racking. Then I back the weight off to something very light and run a set of Widowmakers (3x20) without reracking. At this point, my legs are already pretty trashed. My legs respond to the higher volume, so I tend to stick to 3x10's on my legs pretty much all the time and swap in more Widowmaker sets here and there or always try to increase my weight every week.

Standing Barbell Calve Raises - I go pretty heavy with these, also with higher volume. These are just a BB across the shoulders with a ten pound plate under the front balls of my feet. Great for teaching balance and control with your calves as well as shredding them to bits. I would only recommend doing these if you have a Power Rack to protect you should you lose your balance. I typically run these in sets of 3x15 or 3x20 depending on how heavy I'm going.

Leg Curls - I rotate these in and out, swapping them for Straight-Legged Deadlifts. My hammies respond pretty well to heavier weight with lower reps on these, so I tend to use whatever set/rep configuration I'm doing for the day. Yesterday was 3x6's.

So, that's legs. Obviously the focus of my leg training is on deep, ATG Squats. Absolutely the most beneficial leg exercise you can do and a great compound lift to boot. If you're hitting that leg routine hard enough, you'll be feeling it for the next couple of days. Now for shoulders:

Barbell Shrugs - I go very heavy on these and typically run 3x10's or 3x15's depending on how heavy.

Barbell Military Press or DB Military Press

DB Lateral Raises - I like to run my usual routine with these and then grab a coupel 25# plates and do some extended X-Reps (usually around 10-12)

DB Rear Delt Rows - Nice and heavy with these

Face Pulls - Also nice and heavy

Post-Workout:
10 minutes cardio
Full body stretching routine
PWO whey shake w/Waxy Maize Starch
Hot Shower

So Im writing a speech about the benifits of body building for my Oral Comm class and i only have like 3-5 minutes to talk I wanted to ask if you guys wouldnt mind giveing examples of how the art of lifting has helped your life other than the health aspect.

Another thing is working out your legs a essential to lifting?

BAH HUMBBUG!
04-09-2008, 11:36 PM
Yes, working your legs is huge. HUGE

As Jag has already brought up before your upper body grows along with your lower body. But it's also important to have strong legs because we use them all the time. Plus your legs are stronger than your upper body and you can build mass there faster.

Well when you say Health do you only mean physical? Because it can also benefit you mentally as well.

People often say they become addicted because they feel better, not necessarily look better.

It also helps reduce stress and can help people that are depressed by feeling less depressed. It may not cure it but it is a fact that it helps.

It also improves sex drive which can help relationships that are having problems in that area.

It also gives people more energy to do things outside of the gym, at home, at work, at school and so on.

It also helps teach discipline.

Hush
04-09-2008, 11:49 PM
I woudl work my legs but i don't have access to a squat rack or any other leg machine, I do try to run when i get the chance at least once a week.

Unless you have a herniated disc or other severe back issues or are a powerlifter, really not necessary. They take away some of the isolator and supporting/balancing muscle work you get from those lifts, actually, so they're a detriment to your overall progress in the long run, IMHO. Better to back the weight off and focus on proper form and letting those lifts strengthen your supporting muscles.

Hey Jag on http://exrx.net/index.html I can't seem to find any exercise links for the lower back?

There's really only three major exercises I can think of for the lower back; Deadlifts, Hyperextensions and Good Mornings. Personally, I think doing Good Mornings is like signing UP for back problems so I won't do them. I stick with Deadlifts and, if for some reason I can't do those, I'll do Hyperextensions.

I didn't think there was much else, but I wasn't sure so I wanted to take a look and see if there was something I didn't know about.

I do good mornings, but I go very light.

Question. I worked on my biceps/triceps a couple days back. Those muscles are still sore, but only by a little. I was wanting to lift again today, but not sure if I should wait until the soreness is completely gone.

Muscle groups generally heal within 72 hours from weight training damage, but if you're still sore that's a sign that they could still be healing. Question for you, though; why are you doing the same workout twice in one week?

That's just how I've always done it. Every few days or so when my muscles are able to. I've been getting some more curve or so in my arm so I didn't think anything of it.

So, basically all you work is your arms?

Tri-o-Plex Protein Cookies = Delicious hi-protein treat.

Wouldn't eat em everyday, but once in a blue moon when you want a cookie...they aren't too shabby

Here's how I usually work, in rotation:

Day 1. Arms
Day 2. Chest/stomach
Day 3. Legs

If you're looking to work out on a three-day split, you'd be better served by something like the routine in the link in my sig, to be honest. You're missing back and shoulders work in your current routine, also, so you're not hitting all the muscle groups.

As you get older this increases. Bodybuilders who are 40+ often leave legs for 9 days... :wow:

Thankfully I haven't had to do that so far. Especially now that I'm on HRT. I also use a healthy bit of L-Glutamine to help with my recovery and keep my immune system firing on all cylinders.
