Nice, you're obviously not a n00b in the gym so we won't have to start from scratch w/ you :D
:funny:
Lol yeah like I said it's only been about a year of real dedication to the gym, and I'm only 18, but I've been reading you guys workouts and such and it's all pretty helpful.
Learn as much as you can. I wish to Hell I'd known what I know now when I was your age. It would have saved me years of wasted training and frustration. You look like you're off to a great start.

No clue what my 1 Rep Max's are. I quit doing them long ago as I consider them vanity lifts that are good for inflating your ego and increasing your risk of getting injured so that you won't be able to continue your training. They're also worthless as a strength indicator from my viewpoint, because I know guys that can push 300 for 1 rep on bench press but then can hardly eek out three sets of six with 215 on the bar. I'm more worried about what kind of weight I'm moving over the course of my workouts and track my progress on that front. And, I'm never, ever, ever concerned about how I stack up against anyone else in terms of the weight I'm moving. I am competing with myself and not anyone else and there is ALWAYS someone bigger, badder and stronger than you are; period. If I was competing in powerlifting or strongman events, I'd have a different view of it, but for what I do, it's pointless to compare any kind of stats. So, with that disclaimer out of the way, these are the weights I'm currently using for reps on a few exercises:
Incline DB Press - 130 DB's (no clue what my flat bench or barbell bench numbers are as I don't do those lifts)
Weighted Dips - 135 (plus bodyweight of 198)
Ass To Grass Squats - 320 (average, sometimes more, sometimes less; no idea what my parallel squat is as I quit doing them ages ago but I was up to 490 on them before I switched to pure ATG Squats)
Straight Leg Deadlift - 295
Military Press - 180
Power Cleans - 205 (this is one of my weak lifts, from a personal viewpoint)
Deadlifts - 470
That's about all I can think of off the top of my head
First, how long did it take you to do this workout? Second, I can't tell you what sort of rep-set configuration to shoot for (and thus how much weight to push for) without knowing what your goals are. Third, I'm not a big fan of working to failure; it's a huge strain on the CNS (Central Nervous System) and can make recovery time much slower than it should be which will ultimately impede your progress. Just depends on your age and metabolism and how fast you recover, but if you're 25 or older, going to failure becomes a prospect of lessening returns. I prefer going right up to the edge of failure but not completely to failure, personally. Fourth, I'd group your exercises more like this to get a progressive working of the muscle groups; it allows for cumulative exhaustion and gives each muscle group a more thorough workout:
close grip bench press
skullcrushers w/vbar
rope push downs
shoulder presses(Machine) OR shoulder presses(dumbells) (don't do both, it's redundant)
Lateral Dumbbell Raises
face pullers
alternating dumbell curls
incline dumbell curls
dumbell curls
(A lot of dumbbell curls, here. Maybe make one of these lifts concentration curls or preacher curls)
With this grouping, we start with your tri's, as they're your strongest muscle group; they also incorporate your shoulders and back into those lifts, so you'll get some pre-exhaustion before moving onto shoulders. We do bi's last because they're an isolated muscle group and you want the majority of your strength for tri's and shoulders because they incorporate more muscles and therefore burn more energy in the form of your glucogen stores, so doing them first keeps you fresher for those lifts so you can move more weight. Rest between sets is 60-90 seconds (no more, no less) and the entire workout should not exceed 60 minutes so that you don't burn completely through your glucogen stores and start burning muscle for fuel (known as catabolism).
jag
thanks for the tips Jag. my workout is always around 60 to 90 minutes long with minute rests between sets. the above routine was about 90 minutes maybe a bit longer :) i'll try your suggestion next go round. the gym was packed and the barbells were being used when i wanted them so i had to use dumbells. I forgot i had some shoulder shrugs too lol.
I would say my arms are pretty nice i get complements on them all the time but my shoulders are lacking i would like to get some width on them especially when seen from the back. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Two weeks might not show much difference but you gotta be in this for the long run to make drastic changes to your body. Even when your just starting out you should notice other changes too. It helped me get more energy and more ambition (the muscles are nice too). Stick with it, it'll be worth it.

Dave Draper has a pretty good primer on supersets (http://www.davedraper.com/superset-training.html). I prefer to use them sparingly, personally. I'd rather focus on compound lifts and heavy sets with single exercises at a time. They can be a good tool for working smaller muscle groups like the arms, though.
For abs, I use cable crunches, weighted v-ups, hanging leg raises and Murderball Crotch passes (see link in sig for explanation).

Thanks I actually already do some of those ab workouts, but not all, good to know I'm not just making stuff up. As for supersetting I agree with you, I had a misunderstanding of what that meant. I thought it involved taking one exercise, curls for example, and just doing say 6 reps at a high weight 8 at an intermediate weight and like 10 at a low weight with no rest in between sets. But I guess that doesn't have a name lol.

Jumper sucked. Seriously, the opening credits is Vader giving a monologue of the idea of the movie, and he couldn't even act that properly.
The fifteen-year-old that played Vader at a young age, did a better job of acting. Shame.
Too true. The days of summer movies, you being pissed about my umbros, and screaming at BA 'I haven't seen you since high school,' are too few and far between.
Ed Norton brought what Bale did for BB. Seriously, it goes Bale, Norton and Jr. for best choices for said roles.
I respectfully disagree.
Christopher Reeves - There never will be a better Superman ever.
RD jr. - Absolutely nailed Stark and Iron Man
Patrick Stewart - Born for the role
Ben Affleck Gotcha! :D

Got a question fellas: what deadlift grip are you guys using? Since switching from mixed to 2x overhand, I've had to drop like 30lbs and I can't seem to break through a plateau. Not b/c of lack of back/leg strength, but my grip gives out. The double overhand has strengthened my grip strength quit a bit but I feel like it's at the expense of my lower back...and that ain't cool.
I switched from mixed grip because I did some reading and I agreed w/ the fact that it causes you to use a bit more bicep strength in the arm where your palm is facing upward. That also explains why I was lifting heavier w/ that grip. I don't wanna get my biceps involved any more than I need to.

I use strictly an overhand grip with straps getting involved pretty much after my warmup sets. I have mild carpal tunnel syndrome and my grip is not what it used to be, though all the training my grip gets from pullups, deads, rows, etc. definitely helps my carpal tunnel syndrome. At any rate, I know some people don't want to use straps because they feel like they are cheating, but I'm targeting the muscle group that's being worked that day with as much weight as I can and if that means using straps to maximize the load so be it. If you want to train your grip, train your grip. If you want to train your back, train your back (and use as much weight as you can, even if you need to bring straps into the mix). Optimally, your grip grows with your dead capacity of course, but when you start pulling at a certain weight level, that gets hard to do for a lot of guys. To the point that I know quite a few that dedicate one day a week almost expressly to grip training to help with that. I can't do that, personally, because of my carpal tunnel syndrome (it's very, very easy for me to overwork my grip and render it useless for awhile; slow recovery time thanks to the CTS).

Since I dont know what size they are or how many pair you have, I think you would benefit from a circuit training style routine. You said you dont want to do bodybuilding, so this should fit the bill for you better and doesnt take long...just keep up the intensity.
You can easily organize a group of exercises and run them 1 right after the other with basically no rest in between (unless you set it up differently). Just try to hit all the body parts. Obviously you can and probably will use bodyweight exercises like pushups, situps, squats and lunges since you are short on equipment.
You can use the dumbbells for 1 arm rows, curls, overhead presses and more. Keep it simple. You could also still hold the dumbbells for added weight to the squats and lunges and all.
If you are still clueless, I can PM you a more detailed routine (it will just have to be when I get off work today).

Not to mention that the best acting came from John Leguzamo. I mean the most of the time I was sitting there thinking the acting was as bad as a soap opera. Walberg included and his wife. God she sucked ass so bad.
I think we found out too soon also what the problem was. I mean it was maybe halfway through the movie and we know why everything is happening. Too quick, not any build up like his other movies then there is no suspense left. After we know it's sort of like....ok....now what?

I think he meant current era, that may be why he left Reeves off the list.
He did mention Rob Downey.
Im sure he would agree about Prof X, I think since he isnt the character of focus in those movies ( like Wolverine), he left him off.
God I wish they would make a better Daredevil....heck, I wish they would let me make it.
While I liked Bale as Batman/Wayne. I didn't feel that he absolutely nailed both. He was good and solid as them but I just wasn't blown away like I was with RD jr. I mean he is Stark as Reeves is Superman. IMHO.

I agree SB, anywho I got a call today and it was from Golds Gym I had forgotten i entered myself into a contest box and I won a free Personal Training Session. lol. Now I know a great deal about weight lifting so this will prolly not be of much help to me but I think it will be interesting to see what there "trainer" will have to tell me. My question is wuld it be bad to do my back twice in one week? I ask cause thatis the ody part that i told them needs some more help. SO would it be ok too do Chest Back Tris and abs today and then do a small amount of back on fridays?

I know you didnt ask me, but it really shouldnt cause any problem to work back 2x a week. Just give it enough rest between (dont do it Monday, then Wednesday), maybe a Monday, Thursday type of split (that would give 72 hours between workouts).
I think a few people on here do this sort of thing to hit a bodypart that may be lagging.

I do agree, but to be fair we have only seen him sans shirt for like 2-3 seconds max. He looked properly toned, just didn't have alot of mass. I think that comes down mainly to the slimmer suit. I feel like he probably could have gotten back up to BB weight if he wanted to.

Yeah. I remember everyone was thinking he'd be like Patrick Bateman when he took his shirt off when they saw him considerably smaller in the promo pics. Well the last trailer he takes off his shirt, and frankly, he looks terrible. His skin looks very worn and dry in the picture. He doesn't have any healthy glow at all. Worst of all his muscles are aging pretty quickly, someone said he looks like he's forty something in recent pictures taken of him. This all comes from crash dieting. The more he does roles like Rescue Dawn and the Machinist, where he diets down to those levels of underweight, the more he's going to destroy his ability to rebound and gain muscle. I mean The Machinist alone had to ruin his protein synthesis and nutrient absorption.
I know you didnt ask me, but it really shouldnt cause any problem to work back 2x a week. Just give it enough rest between (dont do it Monday, then Wednesday), maybe a Monday, Thursday type of split (that would give 72 hours between workouts).

Yeah I went to the Golds Gym thing and man o man that thing sucked, she was trying to teach me circuit training when i was with one of the first gyms in Saint Louis that started using Circuit training. lol. Hey, I'm about to add a swim routine to my workout regiment. Suggestions?
BAH HUMBBUG!
06-16-2008, 06:14 PM
What is your current regiment? Your diet? Could you provide us with this info for more advice? It would help.
How often do you workout? What is your routine? How many reps and sets and what amounts of weight do you use? What is your current cardio routine?
What is your goal? What are you going for?
Compi716
06-16-2008, 06:31 PM
I used to do four days weight training, and two days cardio. Now I'm converting to four days weigh training with cardio, and one or two days of swimming.
I eat very healthy. Lots of fruits and vegetables, and I usually stay away from junk unless I'm really in the mood.
My goal is to look and feel as good as possible. I am a college student after all, and I'd like to, ahem, maximize my college experience.
BAH HUMBBUG!
06-16-2008, 06:35 PM
Get laid got it. But more specifics would help us out.
Have you read through Jag's sig?
What is your current height/weight? Any idea of body fat %? If you pinch the fat on your stomach and it is an inch thick it means roughly 10-15% body fat give or take.
Do you track your diet? Since you are a college student I assume you don't have a ton of money to spend on food. use www.fitday.com to track your diet and make sure you are getting what you need.
Are you trying to add muscle or lose fat?
Compi716
06-16-2008, 06:43 PM
My basic goal is to be presentable. In this superficial world, it is important from every stand point to "look good." It's sad, but true.
At the moment I'm 5'8, 150 pounds. I'd say, given your information Humbbug, that I'm about 10% body fat. My main goal is to be fit, which includes the inside (like blood pressure, which is already immaculate) and outside. I'm trying to add muscle and lose fat, although I have enough muscle already that I could only lose fat and look fine.
Even in school I eat very healthy. Due to certain religious constraints I'm essentially a vegetarian at school, and eat only fruits, vegetables, and fish.
That's really all the info I have to give. I hope this was of help, and thank you very much.

My basic goal is to be presentable. In this superficial world, it is important from every stand point to "look good." It's sad, but true. Which is ******** that you should not buy into. Buying into it only validates it. Don't validate **** you do not believe in. Secondly what is far more important is that you feel good.
At the moment I'm 5'8, 150 pounds. I'd say, given your information Humbbug, that I'm about 10% body fat. My main goal is to be fit, which includes the inside (like blood pressure, which is already immaculate) and outside. Well you are about an inch taller than I am but roughly 5lbs less. I have decent muscle build right now but it sounds like I have a bit more fat on my body than you do. If I were to cut down to 8% body fat or so I would weigh roughly 140lbs. I want to be between 160-170lbs and roughly 10% body fat. Losing fat will make you seem smaller so if you're okay with that then you can start cutting.
It is a lot easier to do one or the other. Either pack on muscle but you will gain some fat or cut and define but you will not get much bigger if at all. (unless you are a much more serious lifter and have been doing it for quite some time.) But for general purposes the basic formula is one or the other.
Even in school I eat very healthy. Due to certain religious constraints I'm essentially a vegetarian at school, and eat only fruits, vegetables, and fish.
Well then my friend you are in luck, you can still eat nuts, cheese, milk and since you eat fish, tuna and salmon are packed full of protein and good fats.
That's really all the info I have to give. I hope this was of help, and thank you very much.
I would set up a fitday account. And if you really are serious, take a look at Jag's sig and read through it. Please, it is so incredibly useful that it's ridiculous that people do not look at it when starting off here or have even been working out for a while.
The general rule is this for your diet. 40/40/20% break down of your meals. Meaning that 40% of your calories should come from carbs and protein and 20% should come from healthy fat. Salmon, natural peanut butter, avacado and so on. Not McDonald's or pizza.
You should consume 1g of protein per lb of lean muscle mass (usually just overall body weight is what people go by). So if you weight 150lbs you should eat at least 150g of protein per day.
Again depending on your goals it ranges from 1-2g per. I eat somewhere between 160g-220g per day. Just depending on various factors. I found that the caloric consumption for 300g of protein a day for me was too high as I was putting on a lot of fat.
Also everyone is different so it may take a couple, few or even more months for you to figure out what works best for your body and your routine.
You have a good starting point for now so hope that helps. Also you should try to get some whey protein. Not sure what religious restrictions you have, so you should check out the ingredients but the overall consensus here for our favorite is Optimum Whey 100%

There's this stuff they have now. It's called FOOD. Have you tried any, yet? :oldrazz: Seriously, try getting more chicken, beef, tuna, nuts, whatever actual food you can as your primary source of protein. You're damn near getting all of your protein through shakes right now. You'll see better results from eating real food; nothing is more anabolic than actual FOOD!
Hard for me to gauge how long a 10# bag actually lasts me as my wife gets into my stash now and again. I'm using 2-3 whey shakes a day (sometimes less, depending on how much actual FOOD I'm able to eat as my schedule permits).
I'm 5'6" and 199#'s (weighed just yesterday) at around 12% bodyfat at the moment.

Holy crap guys:
Uh, take it from someone who knows a little about the subject.
I was born skinny and hyper active, shot up to about 6'1", got fat(about 240.) Got skinny, about 155, and then got fat again(about 285.) Currently getting skinny again, about 240.
I can sum up health issues and the whole fat/skinny and ugly/pretty debates in one word - ********!
First of all, as for fat being unhealthy, Ben Franklin was a sick fat ass with gout who lived well into his 80's. Trust me when I say - 'FAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GOOD OR BAD HEALTH!'
Second, why do people fear things like cholestrol, high blood pressure, calories, and greasy pizza? Getting a gun in your face, that's scarey! Are some of you people seriously afraid of things you can't even see?
Third, uhhh... most fat peoples weight is primarily water. They retain the water because life is pushing them too hard and their water supply is unstable. The same can be said for people who overeat, they have unstable food supplies. That's riiiiiight, being fat means you aren't relying on someone else to feed you and trying to solidfy your OWN food line.
Fourth, everyone needs and enjoys food and drink - right? Well guess what, fat ass likes it most and he is stronger which is how he got. You really think being fat is stupid? A fat person could last a lot longer without food and water than a person with no fat. Even more, fat ass won't pimp himslef/herself out for cheap tricks since he/she has the necessary 'cushion' to get a little leverage.
Fifth, most fat people actually don't overeat. Like I said, body fat is mostly comprised of water. That is why people get fat, they drink too much. Water, juice, soda, milk, alcohol, it doesn't matter. Sugar or no sugar, drinking 80-120 oz. of fluids each and every day will tend to cause one to store some. And for all you health nuts, doctors say we should drink at least 80 oz. of water a day, but guess what? Only fat ass does it, because he/she can do to having the necessary fat to store some of that water.
Finally, this really only applies to northern fatties, if one lives in a cold weather climate and is fat then it probably means their instincts are working and/or they are the ones facing life outside the box. They aren't relying on anyone else to provide heat for them during the sub zero temps and storing body fat is the best they can do at younger ages. What 20 year old can truely provide heat for themself, only fatass can. Now fat people in hot climates is kinda odd to me.
I can be fat, or I can be skinny. There are pros and cons to each.
Being fat is great and would probably be my first choice if I had to choose. As I've stated, I'm not afraid of health issues. I am currently in a slim down period for a few reasons:
1. Clothes. The clothing choices are much better in smaller sizes and more comfortable.
2. Sex. Meh, it doesn't really matter to me but certain areas look bigger when you're skinny.
3. Stupid people and their comments. One can only hear so much whining and complaining about being fat.
4. This is quite amusing. If I am succesful, and fully understand gaining and losing weight I may try and get up to 500 pounds - AND THIS TIME I AM GOING TO LOOOOOOOVE DOING IT!
note I:
IT HELPS KNOWING HOW TO BODY SLAM PEOPLE AND FIGHT FOUR OR FIVE PEOPLE AT ONCE IF YOU WANT TO CONTROL THE FOOD SUPPLY AND GET FAT - TO THE VICTORS GO THE SPOILS.
note II:
DO NOT MESS WITH FAT ASS - HE/SHE EATS DEATH FOR FUN.
note III:
DON'T FEAR WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE WITH THE NAKED EYE(CHOLESTEROL, HIGH BLUDD PRESSURE, CLOGGED ARTERIES, ETC.)

I remember reading that Whole Foods was buying out Wild Oats. They're scheduled to build a Whole Foods here, but the location is clear across town so I won't be going out of my way to stop in there (especially with the way gas prices are). Their prices are sometimes a little exorbitant, though, but their products are top notch. The company I've been harassing to build a store in my area is Trader Joe's. They have some awesome natural products and their prices are fantastic.

Nope. It encrypts all files with it's DRM. The Zune Marketplace released DRM-free music in it's latest incarnation for around 1/3rd of it's available tracks (which pales in comparison with the number of tracks available through the iTunes Music Store). M$ also changed their "three plays or three days" expiration on traded files to "three plays" across the board, over the course of how long you want to take to listen to a traded file. Once you listen to it three times, though, it's toast.

I do know people who have washed their iPods and they still worked fine, since that seems to be your litmus test. Any moron who washes their electronics in the washing machine should count themselves lucky if the device still works. I'm failing to see your argument, here. Zen makes some nice MP3 players, but I've had several iPods and all of them still run (including the original 1st Generation 5GB iPod that I have). They've been a little bit abused here and there, but I take care of my electronics so they last just fine for me. Seems like everyone who disses on iPods has either never owned them or dropped them out of a plane at 20,000 feet and then complained that they didn't take the kind of ridiculous punishment they dished out on their device. Newsflash: if you treat your equipment poorly, it will break. Duh.

To be honest I-pods are very nice machines. My second gen still works but the battery has to be constantly charged and will drain if I do not use it within a couple days.
The only real problem I have with the i-pod (or Apple) is that it seems they could put out more in less time or less generations. But that is just how it works, it's business. I actually didn't wash it on purpose, it was a complete accident and I was surprised as hell that it still works. Lucky me. :D
I think I am also bitter that when I bought my 2nd gen I-pod I paid $500 for 20gb and now you can get a 160gb for $349.00. Although this is like six years later. But by the time the orange frame ones came out I think the 30Gb was only $400 or something like that.
I also don't like the fact that i-tunes songs are DRM protected. I know you can pay more for them not to be, but it's just lame imho. But from what my friends tell me if you buy a whole album for $9.99 you can get it DRM free.

I read earlier someone was trying dips to work the lower chest by leaning forward on the dip station. It does work but if you dont feel it try using the seated dip machine, facing the machine with knees on the foot pads. When I tried this my lower pecs were burning.

I have my trusty 1st gen Nano on workout duty and it has held up like a champ. Apple makes a good product I have no complaints. It seams like Microsoft always throws a wet blanket over the fire, the Zune was a great idea but you can only listen to the shared music three times? That is BS. Good idea bad execution much like the Xbox 360...
Anyways, I'm doing chest and back tonight.

I'm not a big fan of working chest and back on the same day as they are two of the larger muscle groups and really deserve the intensity of their own days. That said, if you're going to work these two muscle groups together, construct your split so that the exercises build on each other cumulatively for each muscle group before moving to the next, core/compound lifts coming first and auxiliary exercises coming after. Something like this:
Chest:
20 pushups warmup
dumbell flat bench press
dumbell incline bench press
cable cross over flys
Back:
Pullups 30reps total
barbell rows
seated cable rows
Also, where's the deadlifts?

Well, just so you guys know, I didnt get a Zune to share files with anyone. I certainly dont know anyone else with one, so its not like I could share anyway. The 3 plays thing is dumb as hell in my opinion too.
Anyways, I got it because 30gb was very very cheap compared to other players (due to their unpopularity mainly). It has worked really well for me so far, so I definitely have no complaints. I am still waiting to load up a movie on it. I will say this, i-pod certainly has more and cooler gear to go with it, since it is the industry standard.
But again, no complaints and I have always gone against the grain anyway.

i picked up on it a while ago to work opposite muscle groups like back and chest or hammys and quads. I've done ok with that so far. While one muscle group rested i worked the other and so on. I did read your primer in your sig very good info in there gathered from years of training no doubt.
And deads are part of my leg routine, they are kind of interchangeable like strait legged deads or widow makers they work back and legs.

No worries dude. I purchased a Creative Zen 40GB player like 3 or 4 years ago when the iPod first came out it was half the price of the nearest size iPod had available which was 20GB, and me being the cheap bastich i am i went for it. The options were great on it and it played all known file formats but it did not have the Apple cool factor, it looked like a brick and was heavy as hell I could not workout with that thing flopping around on my hip, thats why i got a nano.

ON chocolate is kind of dull if you use a shaker it tastes much better from the blender with a banana and fresh blueberries and 2% lactaid. Once im out of my GNC brand im ordering some ON from BB.com

The last three months are the worst in terms of them being uncomfortable, trust me. And you will get to the point where every moan and stir she makes will have you wondering if it's time to take her to the hospital. LOL! It's good sleep deprivation training for you when she's keeping you up at night in that last trimester with tossing and turning and being unable to sleep. That sleep deprivation training will come in handy later, trust me. :( As far the diet, my wife went through the same thing. Couldn't get her to eat chicken especially, but even steak, pork chops and sausage were things she just wouldn't eat while she was pregnant. Lots of cheese, bread, rice, pasta, etc, and that was about it. Heh!

No, see that is the way my wife always eats....cheese and bread. I hoped she would try to get some protein and iron and all since she is carrying a child, but NOOOOOO.
If we go Mexican-cheese quesadillas
Arbys, Applebees, Fridays-fried mozarella sticks
Sonic-grill cheese sandwich
Red Lobster-cheese biscuits
home-grill cheese sandwich
I told her doctor and he explained her needing to get more protein and all, but she doesnt listen to anyone! makes me mad!
As far as sleep deprivation..I have some experience with that as it is. I get up 3-4 times a night to pee. I know, nobody needs to know that...but whatever. I havent slept through a full night in years. I get about 1-2 hours, then get up, pee, and repeat. I know it will be different when the kid comes, I will have to feed, change and/or rock her, but I guess I am a bit accustomed to at least waking up a bunch.

Here's one for you. Find a high cable (like the kind you'd use for pulldowns). Put a bench underneath it and a t-bar attachment on the cable. Facing the pulldown machine, grab the t-bar with your palms facing you (like you were doing curls and lifted the barbell up to your face). Lay down on the bench, on your back while holding onto that t-bar. Now do some curls, pulling the t-bar up to the bridge of your nose with a nice tight squeeze when you do so. Add weight as appropriate. These are called High Cable Row
Decline Bench Curls. It's my favorite new bicep exercise.
