Didn't loose much this past week, got to try harder. Went to the gym and did some leg weights followed by cardio.

A piece of advice..since it sounds like weight loss may be one of your goals....dont weigh yourself too often. It can become a mindfuK.
Judge yourself using all things, not just a scale-see how you look in the mirror, how your clothes fit etc etc.

Good luck bro.

I haven't had time to watch your vids, yet, but a few things come to mind off the top of my head.

One, you're trying to go too heavy. Sometimes you need to back the weight off to accommodate your knees better, particularly if you aren't used to this particular movement.

Two, if you're squatting more than once a week (twice tops), then you're probably putting a lot of additional stress on your knees (nor are you really giving yourself enough time to heal up.)

Three, you may need to point your toes forward a little more to reduce sheer stress.

And, four...and I saved this one for last because it's the most common culprit that I have seen in causing knee soreness with ATG Squats....when you are in the mechanics of the lift, be sure you are pushing straight up with the glutes, quads and hammies. I say "straight up", because a lot of people have a tendency to push out to the sides when they're on the uptake of the lift, sort of digging their feet in and pushing from the sides of their feet so that it puts a lot of stress on the knees and hips rather than focusing on pushing straight up through the lift. Let me know if that makes sense as I'm not sure I described that adequately.

jag

I've deloaded all the way down to 205lbs, and it was still pretty difficult!
I made sure I wasn't pushing with the sides of my feet, just concentrating on form the whole way.

Haven't had knee pain since last week which is good, although I've hit an energy slump the last few workouts, not sure if it is because I ran out of BCAA's, or if my CNS is getting worn out. Starting to look forward to my winter break, but I won't quit just yet.

Hurt in a good way. I'm trying to switch up everything away from machines, although it's happening a bit slowly.

Truth be told, I'm actually kinda intimidated by one entire side of the gym. When you walk through the door, all of the gym equipment is clearly divided on the left and right sides of the building. All of the machines are on the left, and all of the freeweights and benches are on the right. It's like they're trying to divide the gym based on expertise and ability. All of us out-of-shape people stick mainly to the left/machine side. Whenever I trek to the right side to do stuff like decline bench presses, it's like "what the hell am I doing over here?!" I become the lone fat guy (well, lone fat guy who doesn't look like a powerlifter).

Probably part of why your knees are hurting, to be honest. That's a lot of strain on the ligaments, tendons and joints not to mention the stress on the CNS. I squat once a week and it's plenty.

It certainly takes it's toll. I've just felt tired lately as well, bad sleeping patterns, not as enthusiastic about getting my 6 meals a day, ran of my BCAA's, and constantly deloading on squats is a bit of a bummer. Makes my progress sheet look like a joke.

I will reconfigure the stronglifts 5x5 routine come spring, hopefully my week off of rest and eating will do me good. As I said the pain in my knees went away after the first 2 times of me going ATG.

I save heavy cardio for non-lifting days and keep my light cardio for warm-ups and post-workout after lifting. Otherwise, sure...go crank out a good 60 minutes of cardio on your non-lifting days.

I use pull-ups at the beginning of my back workouts as a warm-up. Good to see you swimming towards the free-weight racks ever so slowly. Before you know it, you'll be cranking out pull-ups without the assisted machine.

I don't know what to make of this, but during Brazilian Jiu Jitsu last night, i torqued my upper body as i was sparring, and felt/heard a loud 'pop' in my rib cage. It's in the area right about when the rib connects to the sternum. At first i though i had broken a rib. It's sore and i can't rotate my upper body, either left nor, right without discomfort and i can't sneeze, cough or laugh without it hurting. Not sure what it is but i suspect i'm not gonna be able to train for a week or two. :csad:

Anyhow, on another subject: i usually do dumbell squats with the weights hanging to my sides, but i've seen pics where some ppl throw them up and hold them up on their shoulders as they squat. Anyone here do them that way? And are they more beneficial that holding the weights to your sides?

I have done them both ways. I think it is more preference than anything else as to position of the dbells. There may be one way that allows you to hold a little more weight than the other.

I do them that way cause i don't have a squat rack. I have a bar that i load up with about 130lb worth of plates, and then i 'flip' the weight up onto my shoulders to do 'front squats'. It's too dangerous to shoulder press that amount of weight up above my head, to place it along the back of my shoulders to do standard squats.....so dumb bell squats is the only way i can 'go heavy', as i work out mainly at home.

So, this is somewhat fitness related. For those of you who have been watching the news or who sometimes hang out on bodybuilding.com, you may already be aware of this. We've talked before about how the Misc. section over there makes Community here look incredibly tame. Something happened a couple of days ago to very much reinforce that; one of the posters there has threatened to commit suicide a few times, even starting threads about it. Not only has no one taken the guy seriously over it, they've seriously encouraged him to do it (yes, sick, I know). Night before last, this guy creates a thread in Misc. and says he's set up a live web cam feed on Justin.tv where he's going to commit suicide. The sub-human a-holes in Misc., along with the equally sub-human a-holes on Justin.tv immediately start encouraging him to do it. He takes a ton of pills and interacts with all these people until the pills really start kicking in and then lays down on his bed, in full view of the webcam. It's not for many hours before anyone starts thinking he's actually serious, but by this time he has pretty much stopped breathing. Someone manages to get ahold of the authorities in his town (how they got his address, I'm unsure of), but by then it's too late. He actually dies on camera and the live feed continues until police break down the door and get on the scene and turn the camera off. The sub-human a-holes continue making jokes and laughing about what they goaded this poor kid into doing. Just...sick beyond all comprehension. Here are a couple of news stories on it:

He actually dies on camera and the live feed continues until police break down the door and get on the scene and turn the camera off. The sub-human a-holes continue making jokes and laughing about what they goaded this poor kid into doing. Just...sick beyond all comprehension. Here are a couple of news stories on it:

Depends on your goals.
Definitely take a little notebook to the gym and write down everything you do (sets, reps, weight used and rest periods-for every lift).

Also take measurements if you are hoping to gain size. Measure as many parts of the body as you can-biceps, chest, waist, thighs, etc etc etc. Write all that down also.

I ordered it from Amazon.com for about 50 bucks. It's three month supply. I did some research before buying it and found out the drug 'Minoxidil'-that's in Rogaine was originally used to treat high blood pressure and one of the strange side-effects of this drug was 'increased hair growth', so it was discovered by accident. This doesn't suprise me as i'm a kidney transplant patient and take a whole array of drugs that have some pretty strange side effects. In fact the drug Prednisone causing the growth of facial hair in ppl that take it-it happened to me; it's fine cause i'm a guy, but sucks if your a woman.

That's pretty awesome.
What I always wondered and feared about the concept of Rogaine is if your hair becomes dependent on it at some point.
Meaning that once you start using it do you have to keep on using it for the rest of your life, once you stop taking it do you end up being balder then you would have been had you never taken it?

I get paranoid these days because I can't tell if my hairline looks thin, or if it has always been like that, or I'm just a paranoid nutbar.

the Doc and the Physical therapist said nothing outside the bounds of my PT...so a little band work, and whatever arm movement comes out of being on an elliptical.

Worst part is in doing legs I can't even use a real squat rack, because moving my shoulder to hold the bar hurts like a mother.

I'm just thankful its not rotator cuff...I can only imagine how that hurts

So does anyone have any tips/tricks for speeding up healing of shoulder tendonitis??? I am not allowed back in the wieghtroom until it heals...:(

Not sure if it'll do much, but using ice and heat really helped me when a doctor thought I was getting tendonitis in my knee. Took two and a half weeks off without doing anything besides walking, used ice and heat once or twice a day. Seems to have worked, haven't had anything beyond a little discomfort once in a while for the past three weeks. Of course I caught it early before it got too bad.

Take your time and listen to your doc and your PT. Going back too soon could result in your REALLY effing yourself up and having to take a REALLY long vacation from the weights.

I've definately made some improvement in my abdominal area from all of the running I've been doing everyday. I've never been a fat guy but I have a gut that just always looked strange on someone like me.. I'm built pretty athletic for my size: 6 ft. 150 lbs so the love handles and what not always seemed way out of place. The guts going down and my stomach is definately slimming up after a week of running a mile per day I upped it to 1.25 miles because the mile wasn't challenging anymore.

WAY too much cholesterol (of the good and bad variety) in one shot. The average egg has ~6-9 grams of protein in it and is a slower digesting protein, so it wouldn't work well for post-workout especially anyway. How about some chicken? Tuna? Cheese? Yogurt? Milk? Beef? Nuts? Depends on what you have in the house. For post workout, give some chocolate milk a spin; probably the best you could do if you don't have any whey powder.

I won't. I'll be very careful. I was told yesterday that by last couple weeks of December I might get to at least go to the weightroom and do light weight with high reps, to stay limber and whatnot. I'm not psyched for the light weight/endurance work...but its better than nothing. :csad:

Worst part of all this, is I'm losing weight because I've cut my calories due to my lessened activity...and not all of it good weight loss. I hate losing muscle :(

Well, there is such a thing as muscle memory. It will come back quickly once you're able to really start pounding away, again. And, because you'll have been off for awhile, you'll get the benefit of "newbie gains" on top of it at least for a few months.

I'd focus more on your caloric and macronutrient intake for the day, making sure you're hitting your idyllic amount of calories for the day and the appropriate ratios of protein, carbs and fats in that intake. Run the numbers in Fitday on your proposed meal and see what that gets you (I think you'll be surprised). Getting in 5-6 decent meals a day that achieve your caloric and macronutrient goals is key; protein powder just makes it easier to do.

I saw some reasonably priced flat benches over on Amazon.com, so i might snag one of them too, and that rack is adjustable so i can either do squats or lower the height for bench presses.

Actually, I would highly advise against that, particularly coming back from a head injury where you've had blood on the brain of all things. You could re-injure yourself and re-open blood vessels in your brain, or you could create a new injury for yourself by trying to jump right back in where you left off after being off for a month (or possibly more, depending on what your docs say). I'd say that, if it's not safe for you to drive, then it's not safe for you to be pushing weight as heavy as you possibly can, either. Better to ease back into things. Seriously.

Ugh, been sick since last Wednesday, flu and cold... The worst of it was last Friday but I still stubbornly did my stronglifts, which didn't seem to have made anything worse... But anyways got my rest this weekend, ate as much as I could...

Got back today, didn't lose any strength, went up on my bench to 215lbs, but I lost 7 ****ing pounds in 5 days of sickness!

Do you lose mostly fat and/or muscle when you are sick?

Colossal Spoons
12-01-2008, 09:43 PM
Fighting off diseases actually burns calories(a lot of people don't know that). That's why I always make sure to eat as well as the age-old advice of "keeping my fluid intake high".

Depending on how long you're sick and inactive for, you'll lose a bit of muscle.

Bubonic

In the event of illness, it's more important to get a certain amount of calories in period. IF you can break it up into small meals, then awesome but it's not priority #1.

Since we're on the topic and it's cold/flu season, I'll randomly shed some light on 2 huge myths:

1. Being out in the cold does NOT increase your likelihood of coming down with an illness. It's the extreme change from hot to cold and back and forth that leaves you immuno-compromised.

2. If you have a fever, do not attempt to "sweat it out". Fevers are good things. I repeat fevers are GOOD things. It's a sign that your body is fighting the infection. Make no drastic changes to your clothing or bury yourself in blankets. The chills you're feeling have nothing to do w/ you being cold

You know, I was sitting around and looking at possible career paths to take in the future, and I actually considered medical assisting. But screw getting sick. I'll be a paralegal.

Ha, once you get that first illness, things tend to be ok. And at least they give you a free flu shot :oldrazz:

Ugh, been sick since last Wednesday, flu and cold... The worst of it was last Friday but I still stubbornly did my stronglifts, which didn't seem to have made anything worse... But anyways got my rest this weekend, ate as much as I could...

Got back today, didn't lose any strength, went up on my bench to 215lbs, but I lost 7 ****ing pounds in 5 days of sickness!

Do you lose mostly fat and/or muscle when you are sick?

Its funny that you mention this-my wife and I are both feeling sick with something. No big deal, I would just deal with it and let it run its course, but we have a 2 month old and obviously she is more vulnerable. So we want to see someone to determine what we have and see if we can take something to kill it.

So we go to the doctor today (my first time seeing a doc in I dont know how many years) and sure enough we both have throat infections. The doctor prescribes an elixir of medicines that makes my tongue and mouth get totally tingly and numb! WEIRD!

Anyway, Im just ranting now, because I had some good training starting Thanksgiving and hoped to continue it this week, only to wind up with this! I guess I can try to eat clean during this, but I hate just sitting around!

Yeah, staph runs wild in hospitals. I'll never forget the first chapter in my Medical Microbiology book was about the diseases you can pick up in the damn hospital haha.

Everyone teases me, because the first thing I do when I come in is wipe down my entire station with alcohol wipes.

Hey, better safe then sorry... Just don't overdo that hand anti-bacterial stuff heard too much is just as bad as not enough.

I guess it is better to rest though, I might already be over it had I just rested last Friday... Instead I forced my body to work overtime, not only rebuilding muscle, but fighting infection.

But it feels so much better to be bundled all warm and snug :(

One of my biggest complaints about being at the hosiptal was that i was going to get sick because of that place not my stinking head. I told the ambulance driver that and he looked insulted. I really was like what you **** you think i care about your small insignifigant feelings?

Aw, he probably thought you were telling him the hospital was dirty...which in most cases, people work REALLY hard to sanitize everything...it's just inevitable that there are germs when it's a building containing so many sick people.

Your job is extremely physical, so that's going to take it's toll. What is your diet looking like these days? I'm willing to bet that you haven't upped your calories to keep up with the demands of your new job and that could be a part of what's making you tired. When was the last time you took a break from the gym, as well? Post your diet and routine and let's get a look at what you're doing here; maybe we can help tweak things to work better for you dietary-wise as well as your split.
