Part Two:
Update: 01.28.09.
So Christmas is over and my girl has been, somewhat of, a gym rat - since 01.01.09. Some of her problems areas have gotten better, weight, tone, exercises, etc. However, I update because we had, yet, another melt-down.
The other night, she wanted to do Chest and Tri's. I know, a bit clique, but hear me out. So upon beginning the workout, I told her we needed to warm up. Considering it was upper-body, I choose to do push-ups - ten to fifteen. She barely did ONE! Immediately after "doing one," she told me "I can't!" I replied, "if you say 'I can't' one more time, I will leave you to do this yourself."
Before I get 'jumped on' by the female crowd, allow me to explain. The previous week, she gave the same response, on the same workout. On that week, I told her she needed to try her best, vary the exercise, do something - so she would see progress. THAT WEEK, she actually did four to six push ups. Afterwords, we did a grueling upper body workout, for her at least, and she did ALL of the work. Further, JB21 can contend, she has been seen doing several push ups, on many different occasions.
One more point, and then to the melt down. Upon saying "I can't," she walked off and went to the track to walk - WALK!! This coming from the same girl who told me she wanted to work hard to get results. I understand she is frustrated. But instead of walking off and doing her OWN upper body workout, she went upstairs, to the track, to walk and gossip, about me - of course - to her friend. She walked the entire time I worked out. During her walk, I did chest cross-overs, bench, dips, tri-pulldowns, more pushups, incline bench, and flat-bench-dumbbell-presses. After words, once I began to run, she went down stairs, clearly still gossiping - one can tell when hands are talking more then lips and body language, hands on hips, etc. While I ran, then did burpees, she was still on the same machine - ONE!!
Melt down: Once we got in the car, I heard the lasting words that makes any man cringe: "we need to talk." I sat quiet, waiting for her to speak and she said "aren't you going to talk?" What? Like I am suppose to answer back "I agree." In my defense, a look of agreement and silence means "go ahead." The rest is personal jargon and need not apply. However, this brings me to my point/question.
I asked JB21 what he thought, last night. I wanted an answer in the context of 'what I should do, per the next workout.' Meaning, should I let her lead the way? Should I keep up the work, and ideals of "no whining?" How do I approach a person who wants to better themselves, but refuses to do most of the work?
I am at a loss. "Hey, sweetie, let's do legs." "I can't." o.0
Should I reply with the same: "Hey sweetie, I want to do legs today." "I can't."
In short, ladies and gentlemen, how would you all approach a candidate whom thrives on those two words? Male or female, girlfriend or boyfriend, etc.
And. . here we. . go!
Truthfully, you sound like a roided up, controlling ass. You start the post saying she's been doing really well, but because she doesn't want to do some pushups you get pissed. Maybe she didn't understand the point of the pushups, maybe she reall doesn't like that exercise, maybe you could've suggested some other way to warm up. Then you b*tch because she's walking on the track, well walking is much better than just sitting around doing nothing. Sounds like she might have just been a little tired or lazy that day and you responded to that in a horrible way. You say she's making noticable progress so she's obviously doing something right.

Just so you know, thats not how it went down. We talked about it last night.
She asks for his help, then quits before starting. She told him that she wanted to do what he does for chest/triceps and then flakes out during the warm up!
She knows how to do pushups and I have seen them, why she decided to do only 1 and then say "I cant" this time is beyond me. But, this is a theme with her "I cant" is one of her favorite lines. Storm wouldnt ask her to do something she actually physically could not do.
She asked to do things HIS way, then backs out for no apparent reason. They have actually already had a talk about her giving up and not trying and he told her to keep a positive attitude and work hard and she would see results and that he would help her.

True.
And for the sake of being bias, I believe I have come to an understanding, within myself.
Tonight, for example, I am doing back and bi's. I will politely and calmly tell her, if she wishes so, to try and keep up, at her pace and her weight choice.
My leadership will be, every time she sacks, I work harder. Possibly, through visual confirmation - and some verbal - she will realize that I am busting my tail, breaking a sweat, and she should too. If not, then I know where her heart is.
As for being called a controlling ass - yes, I am. But as far as the situation, SHE asked ME for help. SHE told ME to do as I do. SHE told ME that she had goals and said goals were "xyz."
I know how to meet these goals, and if she wishes to have a softcore attitude, the she will get softcore results.
More late, when I return.
Controlling ass. . who does this guy think he's talking to? Don't think you can talk **** about me when I am gone. Devil is here and about my ****.

Storm

Just because you have muscle mass and weight in your body DOES NOT mean that it will be used in your strikes. You have to know how to put this weight and muscle mass behind these strikes.
In my martial arts classes, I've had huge, muscular guys that couldn't punch to save their lives, and I've also had little, slim guys (most of us martial artists in general), who will take you down (with a punch, I might add) before your arm is even extended.
To assume that lifting makes you a better fighter is just ignorant. I've been a lifter for years, and it's helped my martial arts training, yes- but that's because I've trained properly and know how to use my weight and muscle mass in a fight. Someone without training and no knowledge of the technique behind fighting will not.

Hi Storm!
Perhaps ask your girlfriend how serious she is about having you as her trainer and set some rules or guidelines to avoid any miscommunication.
Obviously, I don't know what tone you have with her during the workouts and maybe she gets turned off by it? If that is the case, make it clear to her
"this is how I'm going to be when I train and support you during workouts."
"No whining is allowed."
"There may be times I may raise my voice. Do not take it personally."
Those are just an examples and only an examples. Just lay down the law since this is what she wants from you. And in the end it's up to her to WANT do the work for HERSELF.
Hope that makes sense and helps a little. I'm rooting for her to be in shape (whatever that is to her) and strong! :yay:

If I recall correctly, he is referring to football hits, not martial arts ones.
And I agree with you, weight training does not make you a better boxer/fighter/mma guy.
So, I just got out of the shower and looked in the mirror much to my surprise my abs are starting to define. It's quite strange. It's been a long time since I've seen muscle definition anywhere :P It's a good feeling though.

Not to mention the fact that Hush said the guy who LIFTS AND HITS will be better than the guy who just hits. How is that even a refutable point? He didn't say a bodybuilder would destroy a lineman in a football game :huh:

Ha, nah you didn't sound like an anything. Now that we've established that you are a female, Superman79 will be here shortly to hit on you :(
ha ha too late i used my suave moves on her before he did, just so i can say i hit on her first. i remember my charm like it was yesterday "hey baby11! u r s0 hawt11!one!! interested in net-chat? i live with my mom! i pikked to hit on u, bc i have opt-shuns and u were the onli girl in the room"... wooo! i know i know. i came off original and too hot to trot. just dont go copying and pasting that all over the net guys, save some girls for me. ..... ha ha ha
No, not training for MMA, but some of it comes into play in my training. I actually hit the heavy bag yesterday after my run. I am in law enforcement, so that sort of thing is high on my list as far as how I need to train.
Im not a fan of machines at all, personally and as you can see from the above pics, I have a lot of odd equipment.
So, of course I like the odd stuff, you did just respond to my post about my equipment after all.
I do about 10 different kind of pullups (one of my favorite exercises), I have suggested some of these to Spoons in fact. Im not so good at the gymnastic moves (levers, planches, etc), but am working up to some of them.
Any other examples of odd exercises that you do?
So its just us? Cmon theres gotta be more who do these fun ones.
Well Ill reply in order. It makes sense you're in law enforcement. It always sucks to see guys who work out lots and put in that extra training just to end up with an office job. Then it just becomes a "for the ladies" thing, which is boring and try-hard. I gotta admit, Im a short guy and part of getting bigger is respect from the guys. Not everyone is cool enough not to judge off of looks, specially us guys.
I like the machines because: easy and cheap to move up weights. at home my stuff gets out dated and costs money to get bigger heavier weights. also i enjoy machine, bc for me they are free! with my college tuition. My favorite place to train is at the park, bc I dont feel like every other gym jock.
what are the pullups do you do? i can only think about maybe 5. people say you cant get big off of pullups, i gotta disagree and i think its how you do them. love pullups
also the other stuff i do just for the challenge are: one arm pushup stuff, L-seat stuff occasionally, planche work or planche pushups, odd pullups (one arm, wrist, etc,) plyometric jump exercises occasionally. if anyone has ideas that are outside this category that would fit in the "odd" or rare factor, let us know.

Thanks for asking, Silverstein! I'm doing well. Got a caliper measurement for the first time, yesterday. I'm 30% which is in the "acceptable" level of body fat percentage. Feels good to know my percentages are alright and to keep consistent on working out and eating better. When I get to "fitness" I'll be stoked.

Completed my second day of bodybuilding training at the gym. It was relatively easy compared to the previous workout, but I'm still enjoying the prospects of possibly becoming a competitive/professional bodybuilder if all goes well.
On Tuesday it was the full workout with upper body, lower body, and cardio workout. Today it was just abs, legs, and then 20 minutes on the treadmill.
On Saturday it'll most likely be upper body or maybe just cardio. The manager, his friend, and my other workout friends are unpredictable with the workouts so it adds some freshness and it keeps it from getting boring, you know? But overall I'm doing very good so far and I'm not burnt out nor am I unmotivated.
I also added the necessary protein to my diet and since I haven't had fast food for a year, in the process, I removed Subway and Quizno's subs from my diet strictly changing it to meals from home. Everything is going great at the moment and I'm hoping later this year or next I'll be where I want to be. :up: :up:

Yeah, I still have a long way to go though. I'm nowhere near where I want to be in terms of my body and bodybuilding. But at the moment I am training very hard and I'm enjoying it very much.
The plan is at the end of this year or into next year I should be where I want to be hopefully.

why would you want an alternative to pull ups...it's one of the most fun excersizes you can do! if the was one essential excersize i'd like an alternative for it could only be squats i'd do 10 sets of deadlifts and legextensions rather than 1 set of squats if those would give me the same work

I'm curious, does anyone watch or listen to anything before working out in order to get motivated and pumped up? Normally I watch Arnold Schwarzenegger training videos or listen to Rocky music before working out.
In all honesty I find it distracting to workout with headphones and having an iPod.
Here are some interesting videos that provide motivation and information on new workouts in order to shock the muscles.

My youtube and flash arent working well right now but i saw parts of the video. I never saw some of those pull ups variations, im sure theres more to look at there. i like the side to side ones, def gotta try that out. i notice fedor emelianenko does fast hopping pull ups. i think because pull ups make it hard to cheat, doing them fast enough that you'd hop on the bars is definitely harder. most other exercises... doing it too fast would be using swing momentum to get the weight up.
you should also try planche or other type of odd pushup work.

Well, definitely watch all of them when you get a sec. I love the side to side pullups a lot. There are some guys who move their feet like they are running in mid air when they do that version to work the abs as well. Very good version.
When you talk about the fast hopping pullups-Im not sure what you mean-like plyometric pullups? Because I linked 2 types of those (the last 2 pullup videos). One where you switch grips at the top and one where you clap your hands together at the top. When you say hopping, it sounds like you mean his feet hit the floor...
Planche work is tough. I didnt even get into the types of pushups that I like-there are probably 2x as many of those as pullups. One of the best is doing various ones on gym rings-including bow and arrow pushups on rings-excellent version.
Definitely try the spiderman pushup sometime as well

I just have a huge question for some of you guys in here. I seem to have the metabolism of a slug. I've tried a lot of things in the course of my lifetime to lose some belly flab, but to no great success. I've been reading an awful lot about the health benefits of the Acai Berry and how it is a natural, safe source to boost metabolism. Has anyone in here tried it and does it come in powder form to make drinks from?

I am sick of the Oprah influence on fitness.
Storm's girlfriend will hear Oprah approve of something, like acai berry juice and will swear it is the magic bullet to get her in better shape (rather than exercise and healthy eating).
Case in point, the other night, we went out to dinner and she said "you are supposed to have some olive oil everyday." I knew immediately where she got this and asked just to be sure. Yep-Oprah influence again.

Yeah, that wasnt a knock at your comment and I apologize if it seemed that way ( I realize that I quoted you, but my response was actually to everyone). I guess I just hate people who believe anything that any one person says OR is always looking for the magic bullet to make them thin/fit.

Have you seen a doctor or a specialist in that area? They could run tests and give you an assessment on what you need to do to rev it up. Keep in mind if you get that gut feeling the doc just wants to give you meds to "cure" it ask if there are alternatives. Or get a second opinion. The less meds the better, I think.

About Oprah, the shows I've caught recently on health were really good. But I don't come away thinking she gave me a cure. Just bringing awareness to the issue(s) is what I come away with. Maybe stuff I've never thought of looking into before or maybe it's a topic that brings the lightbulb on and makes me do something about it. Sorry for generalizing. In my opinion, she's someone who genuinely cares and wants to make a positive difference in people's lives.
But yeah, mrvlknight. I do agree. She's no health guru regardless of the experts on her show. I know I've had to figure it out for myself and what works best for me. And I'm always learning. You guys are a great help and support system here.:):up:

4 Sets of 10 Wide Grip Pull-ups

Finish 50lbs Dumbells
Standing Bar Curls= Start 95
Finish 115
I did one other lift today with the 35's where you sit on the bench straight up and fully extend your arm with the weight in it and curl. You would know it if you saw it. Oh and as always I did 8,6,4,2 with every thing but the Pull Ups obviously. Comment if you like.

Do you already have a "cheat day" set aside during the week for you to eat the unhealthy junk? It helps fight off temptation if you can say "it's okay, I'll just have a pizza/burger/burrito/whatever on [blank]day."

So I started a small diet this week. I stopped drinking soda and coffee all together (which is extremely hard to keep up), I'm watching a lot of what I eat which means no fatty, greasy or fried foods and junk foods, and I'm mostly snacking of vegetables, fruits, and cereals. For dinners I've mostly been steaming food and grilling (with no particularly clogging marinades) with small portions with no excessive sides. Friday is my cheat day that I'll snack on junk food/eat out and have a cup of coffee/soda. So far it's been really good, I feel happier for some reason if that makes any sense. Any tips or suggestions?

How long has it been since you last took up running? The reason I ask is if it's your first time in awhile then it may be a good idea to take it slow and easy. Or maybe even start with brisk walking to take it easy on the knees. A friend, on another forum, posted a good article about running to lose weight may not be a good thing to pursue. It took me awhile but I cut out coffee. Mainly because I drank so much of it I got heart palpitations. :wow:
My doctor told me tea is much better for me because it has less caffeine, on the whole, and if I'm really craving coffee I opt for expresso because it's a dark roast and the way it's processed most of the impurities are burnt out (like pesticides). I don't get that queasy feeling like I used to with regular coffee.
Water and tea (black, green, chai) are my main drinking staples. And I agree, I perk up more with a cup of tea (no sugar or cream) too. :)
Yeah, I drink coffee in my protein shakes. It's those crazy sugar filled Starbucks/C'C's coffees that are loaded with shots of "flavor" that are horrible for you!
Well Starbucks coffee is just regular coffee, it's when you add the stuff ON REQUEST that it becomes bad for you.... Same thing with Lattes. A latte (from sbux, or any coffee place) is just steamed milk and espresso. It's when the customer adds a huge amount of sugar that it gets bad. :csad:
You can clearly tell I work at Starbucks :o

My Bodybuilding training update:
Completed my fourth day of bodybuilding training. Needless to say my arms are very sore and so are my abs, but I still feel good and don't feel burned out at all. Right now we're in the process of breaking up the workouts and just doing arms/chest/abs one day, cardio the next, legs the next day, and so forth.
It felt good to be back in the gym today. Although during the workout it felt like I hadn't been in a while, however, I had already did my three days last week so it was weird having weights be heavy again. Overall the training is still going great, the diet is helping, and one thing I haven't lost is the desire to continue getting better and not losing motivation.
The word "I can't" has been removed from my vocabulary and I'm always looking to improve and push myself to the limits.
After training I showered and had a really, really big meal. My mom baked some chicken and I had three chickens, along with a bowl of fruit and two bottled waters. Needless to say I was tired and sore afterwards but it felt good to eat a home cooked meal to repair the muscles and to recover in general.

Don't know who watches the Today Show around here, but this morning they did a segment on TV informercial fitness products with Jenna Wolfe and truth be told, that chick is jacked. I did not see it coming either, she just started messing around with the pullup and push up equipment and was doing push ups on her toes and pull-ups/chin-ups with ease. She even did a little gymnastic-esque dismount from the pull-up bar. In-freakin'-credible.
Here is the reporter, Jenna Wolfe
For a tiny chick she has lats and traps for weeks, woowza.

Start with 8 reps, by 4.
Up the reps to 16 and you will be fine, what kind of shape are you in?

Do 8-10 on a heavier weight for strength, 11-15+ with a more manageable weight for endurance and toning.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone!
About what shape I'm in, I'm 5 feet tall, 113 lbs, and my level of body fat is at 30% when I did the caliper measurement. So I'd say I'm okay but could be better. Would like to burn off a little more body fat and tone-up.
In October last year I was at a high of 120 lbs. Heaviest in my life and I didn't want it to accelerate. Even worse, my energy levels sucked. I feel I've made pretty good progress after joining & going to the gym, getting rid of vices around the house (like chips), and choosing healthier, delicious options for food and drink. I've also incorporated simple work outs at home like doing curls, lifts, (sad-looking) push-ups on the yoga mat, sit-ups on the exercise ball.

Yes, indeed. I had often seen them but never taken the time to familiarize myself until one of my physical therapists had me use them. I like how they challenge surrounding muscle groups without sacrificing the targeted area. They do wonders for one's grip regardless of the exercise. I talked to my gym supervisor about getting some heavier ones in stock.
I've been training for about a week now and today I noticed when I was doing lunges (sort of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf-IuNtuzm8) that my left knee really hurt...
Does anyone know any stretches that might help with that? Does it just mean I have bad knees?

I've never done that one with the twist. I usually do Single Leg Lunges with Dumbbells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTXwN7_3tnw) at the gym. The first time I did lunges, my knees were sore. But the next time (maybe a couple of days later) I did it again and they were fine. Maybe they're used to it now? *shrugs*

I disagree with this as well.
Burpees are a lot like sprinting. I hesitate to put a set number on them, because often the oxygen deprivation that comes from them will hit you once you have stopped.
I would say go to a number that is tolerable. Rest and repeat. Record that number and attempt to do more the next time. Also, go faster than the guys in the video that you posted. Burpees should be performed at a fast rate (again..think of it like a sprint).
Remember, this is a full body conditioner, not a muscle builder.
A lot of people believe this exercise is one of the best for dropping fat.

I do disagree with you about the perfect pushup though. I got a pair for 70 cents and dont consider them a steal at all. I know those w/ wrist problems may benefit from them, but there are SOOOOO many pushup variations out there that one could use and master, I dont see the need for these. A yummy way to prepare chicken! I just tried this recipe tonight:
Japanese Chicken-Scallion Rice Bowl
Ingredients
1. 1 1/2 cups instant brown rice
2. 1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
3. 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
4. 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
5. 1 tablespoon mirin
6. 2 large egg whites
7. 1 large egg
8. 8 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
9. 6 scallions, trimmed and thinly sliced
Cooking Directions
1. Prepare instant brown rice according to package directions.
2. Pour broth into a heavy medium saucepan, along with sugar, soy sauce and mirin. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low.
3. Stir egg whites and whole egg in a small bowl until just mixed. Add chicken to the simmering broth. Gently pour in the egg mixture, without stirring. Sprinkle scallions on top. When the egg starts to firm up, after about 3 minutes, stir it with chopsticks or a knife. (The chicken will be cooked by now.) Divide the rice among 4 deep soup bowls and top with the chicken mixture.
~~~~
Here's the quintessence of Japanese home cooking: an aromatic, protein-rich broth served over rice. Admittedly, Japanese cooking leans heavily on sugar--for a less traditional taste, you could reduce or even omit the sugar.
Notes:
Ingredient Tip
Mirin is a low-alcohol rice wine essential to Japanese cooking. Look for it in your supermarket with the Asian or gourmet ingredients. An equal portion of sherry or white wine with a pinch of sugar may be substituted for mirin.
http://food.yahoo.com/recipes/eatingwell/695/japanese-chicken-scallion-rice-bowl
High in protein, very low in fat. I loved it! I added more chicken, and used only one tablespoon of sugar. I also didn't have mirin sitting around my kitchen and didn't feel like going to the store just for that, so I omitted it. I added a few drops of sesame oil, instead. I'm sure it would taste even better with the mirin.
This was absurdly easy to cook, and the sugar and mirin could easily be taken out and substituted with something spicy, such as red pepper flakes or a good Asian hot sauce.
Just watched MADE "I want to be a Bodybuilder" episode a while back because a friend had told me they did one, and I had seen some rumblings about it on this site. Anyways, when I saw PUMP and Anna were involved I was colored interested and had to watch it. Needless to say I was kind of disappointed...
Yes, the kid was a b*tch in no uncertain terms and that never really changed. Also he's about a year away from coming out of the closet, and those "girlfriends" he's been crushing on won't be the least bit surprised. The way he gawked at Pump the first time he stepped out onstage just looked like he was having his own private sexual fantasy.
Though I think MTV is really to blame for this turkey of an episode. Usually MADE is quirky and fun. Getting kids to throw away their action figures, teaching them social skills and making new friends. The episodes usually feature very realistic goals that can be reached through completely immersing the subject into the training. Even the athletic goals before seemed reachable for the contestants.
This time around I think MTV kind of had some misconceptions going into it. First of all PUMP's training was dead on, it's just that eight weeks is considered the "drop dead" period for contest prep. Drop dead implies that you have a sufficient amount of muscle mass that you can literally do a precontest prep in the quickest and most painful way possible. While other people might have been traing for sixteen weeks, you're going to basically cram that into an eight week intense training and diet regime. This is usually reserved for advanced Bodybuilders who have to do dozens of shows a year and have limited time to bulk up inbetween. Hence the bulk up until about eight of seven weeks out and then cut like madmen.
So basically you have a muscle-less wimp trying to cut and bulk in the period of eight weeks. He might as well have walked onto the stage the next week, rather than putting himself through the pointless eight week dog and pony show.
MTV Made is usually decently dramatic in it's make-overs, and this was not one of them. I can't help but think after covering all these celebs who pack on pounds of "muscle" for roles in movies MTV thought there would actually be progress. How could they believe this kid was somehow going to show any results without A) steroids B) a training period of a year or more C) constant, 24-hour supervision (because he was obviously cheating on his diet) and D) enough time and money to devout to pre-cooking and preparing all his meals unless they didn't have some massive misconceptions about the sport. I truly think they did.
Question:
Is it sometimes better to just save your work out for the next day, if you know you can't get the protein in within the 20-min-window after working out?
I've been getting smaller and I don't know why. I was gaining lots in the summer. The only difference I can think of is that I had protein bars ready for right after I worked out. How important is the 20 min window?
Well, it is important, but if your getting sufficient protein throughout the day the effect of missing it is not as bad as slouching until the next day. Gains will dwindle as time goes by and if your are overtraining or if your training is becoming too routine then your progress may in fact reverse it's trend. If there is no difference between your training today and what you were doing say sixth or seven months ago, that is probably the root of the problem. When you don't randomize your training a little and attack things from different angles you can seriously impair your gains and even lose some of what you have.
I do lots of exercises at the gym though. Im not sure how to randomize it. Prolly just focus on the exercises I feel the most intensity on?
Also yeh its confirmed. Im in the steps to becoming a typical gym jock. Today at the park I tried my one arm pull ups and now I cant even get one. I did no other bicep exercises today so I can't say it's because I wore out my biceps. I hadnt been going to the park in like 2 months. Thats the place where I train pullups and other bodyweight exercises. So it makes sense as to why I lost it, but it doesnt make it any easier to take.
What if i just swapped the days I worked out like just switched them. You know Mondays are now fridays and such, would that have a nice affect?
I wouldn't focus on anything in particular, unless you find yourself making consistent gains on it. The thing you should be doing is varying up your workout in both sets, reps and exercises. You won't get anywhere doing the same routine everytime you go in. Randomizing is an artform of sorts, because you really have to listen to your body and try to understand what it needs and when it needs it. While it's good to have some sort of a loose structural framework, you need to make sure any muscle you train is done so to absolute failure and that you aren't emphasizing the same muscle groups every time you train. If you feel your upper chest is being neglected, train your upper chest hard one week, then maybe work more on your lower or middle chest the next.
I would say while avoiding an exercise can make you weaker on it, if you are doing exercises which aid or are similar to a movement there shouldn't be much lost in the long run. As I say, this all sounds suspiciously like overtraining/overtaxing to me. You should NOT reserve your bodyweight exercises for outside the gym, they can nicely fit in with any weight training or gym training program. Workouts should last an hour, and maybe a half hour or so on cardio. There shouldn't be a whole lot of supplementary work on top of them.
yeah that is harder. shocking the body and doing what it isnt used to. i often try to listen to my body but at times everything just seems to have the same great intensity. ive tried upping the weight so that i cant complete a full 6 or 8 set but i dont think thats made any gains and in fact prolly just weakens the morale. hm and how long do you guys wait in between sets? til you're ready or the same time in between each set (meaning even when you're semi-worn out towards the middle of the work out, you still wait only 2 or 3 minutues.)
thats the thing at the gym i do pull ups, but not at the intensity i used to. summer of 2007 when i could get multiple one arm pullups i was going to the park, the pull up place, three times a week. i didnt realize how good that was for me and it makes sense as to why i got one arm pullups the second day i tried it. as the years went down i didnt train pullups as much or as intensively so it makes sense as to why i went from: multiple pullups, to only one, then to no one-arm pullups. my main was these supplementary exercises with weight stuff thrown in. but this past year i got free access to the gym and the priorities changed.
i worked biceps 2 days before my failed attempt at the one arms. the day before though they werent even sore. so i dont think itd be overtaxing. next chance i get to try one arms will be friday.
Be snikt-When you talk about 1 arm pullups, what do you mean exactly? Describe it for me (hand position).
hands not grabbing on to each other like the rest of the world does em. i didnt pick them up from one day of training. i know you were just asking but i get more tired of when people ask "you can do them without grabbing the other arm?" than actually doing the one arm pullups to show them.
hand positions facing towards and away (chin ups / pull ups.) doesnt matter now, since i can barely do one. im gunna rest up and see if it was a bad day or if i really did lose em.
Does anyone know how effective Darin Steen's 12 week programme is? I'm not navie enough to think that I'll come out of it ripped to shreds but would still like to know if it's worth following.
Everyone, I have a question.
The typical reaction to anything white, or "refined, is that it's bad for you and it makes losing weight harder. Well, I love to run, and I'm trying to shed about ten pounds as well as become a better runner. Well, long story short, I hate whole wheat pasta and truly believe that anyone who likes it is lying to themselves. And I've read many articles that place white pasta up with white bread. But I have also been told that, due to the semolina in the duram wheat used to make all pasta, that although refined, pasta still breaks down slower due to the semolina and therefor has a low Glycemix Index, which prevents it from spiking your insulin.
So to me, that says that the only thing whole wheat pasta has on white pasta is that there is more fiber so those with less will power won't be as hungry. And a few extra nutrients, which I will trade for taste. Someone said the difference between whole pasta and refined pasta is the difference between an apple with it's skin and a skinless apple, just because the extra nutrients of the skin have been stripped away does not make the rest of the apple bad for you.
Thoughts.....feedback....please. This weekend is a cheat weekend so I have two days to figure this out.
I've been doing a heap of reading on the benefits of whole wheat vs white carbs. If you really can't stomach the taste of WW pasta, then you've got no choice but to eat the white. It's not as horrible for you as it sounds.
Yea. but thats not the point. The point is, what makes whole wheat so much better for you if the friggin duram wheat and semolina prevents insulin from spiking regardless of being whole wheat or white?
And I mean besides the fiber keeping those who lack willpower full....
The whole wheat is much less refined and processed. As a general rule; less processed = better. You'll still get energy from your white pasta so go ahead and eat it.
NotFadeAway
02-22-2009, 05:33 PM
Yes, but I would like for someone to explain to me how being processed takes a food that is great for you and makes it bad for you. I can see how it takes away nutrients, but, how does that make a food fattening?
It;s like the apple analogy. An apple with it's skin has more nutrients than an apple without skin, but that wouldn't make a skinless apple bad for you. So how does stripping away a few nutrients and some fiber make white pasta bad?
