Lots of broscience in the world. I thought it was the devil before doing homework on it(spend a lot of my workday reading up on nutrition lol).
I amd going to work out in about five minutes and I must say that its going to be the first time back on creatine for about 10 weeks. Should be fun.

do you guys think 10 extra pounds and weakened legs can cause shin splints?
last year i had surgery on my foot and lost a lot of power in both my legs. i noticed a loss of mass in my legs. at the same time i was working out my upper body and ended up gaining 10 pounds of muscle.
do you think thats enough to start to cause shin splits? whenever i run i dont feel the pain in my foot, its in my shins and that never used to happen before.

I've done it before, and I bruised the skin where the bones of my spine hit the hard floor. It was very uncomfortable. I use a yoga floor mat...they're only about $20 at most, and you can roll them up and keep them in a corner. Or, you can also do crunches on a stability ball...I find it works all of the abdominal muscles better, personally.
Speaking of which, I'd used one of those balls at the gym plenty of times, but I just bought one for at-home use, and I LOVE it! Really good for bridges that target glutes and hammies

you should do a youtube vid for your favorite exercise.
also that one favorited vid you have with the 23 yr old guy, damn he did some crazy stuff. i can definitely say he's strong than me with those exercises.
(what are those exercises called? the ones that invovle body weight? the general term for push ups, pull ups, climbing, etc... is that "isometrics")?

No, isometrics is when you push or pull against a stationary object, like a tree or wall.
Bodyweight exercises are generally referred to as callisthenics.

Yeah I will probably make more videos when the mood strikes.
As far as the shin splints...I dont know. Those have always been a mystery to me. I have seen big guys run on concrete w/ no problems and I have seen thin good who run well get them. I couldnt tell you for sure, but your situation is a possibility.

I've decided I'm qualified just enough to post in this thread now. Before I was simply working on becoming halfway fit but while my routines may seem pretty light to some people I know that I'm pushing myself.
Yesterday I did a combination of PT style in place marching with 2 sets of 10 jumping jacks, 2 sets of 10 push ups, 2 sets of 10 squats, 2 sets of 20 sit ups, and then we followed that up by a 2 mile quick jog.
So my question is this: I'm feeling the burn and I'm pretty tired now how often should I be doing this type of cardio intensive work out on a weekly basis?

By weekly, do you mean 1 time per week? Because the routine you gave could be done everyday (of course it may be pointless, depending on your goals).
So, I guess that leads to the question-what are your goals?

I meant how many times should I do a cardio intensive routine a week. I plan on doing power building things on the alternating days.
I'm looking to become a police officer. I actually "qualify" now based on their physical exam, but I want to be able to excel. I'm just looking to get faster better and stronger than I was before.

Alright-very good to know and I am glad that you told me that. I am currently in law enforcement so I have an idea of what you are going to undertake.
A few questions-what are the current standards for their PT qualifications and what would be "excellent" score (your goals)? In other words-is it 2 min of pushups, 2 min of situps and a 2 mile run (that was my test)? Something similar? Something else?
How long before you apply/do the PT test?
I can tell you for a fact that Stew Smith's programs are 100% geared towards LE PT tests. I highly recommend them. Smith has books that you can purchase, but a vast majority can be found on the web for free.

It is geared towards endurance and that is what I have a problem with personally. Fortunately, a lot of academies are going towards the crossfit regime, which encompasses all aspects of fitness.
The funny thing is, these fat cops catch young fast guys all the time. In fact, we hit a drug house yesterday and a 22 year old guy ran, he was probably 5 ' 10" and 160 lbs. The guy who caught him is in his 30s, 6' 2" and 250 pounds and just had knee surgery.
All that being said, I am 100% for improving police officer fitness by any means necessary. There are no PT tests once you come out of the academy (unless you are on a specialized team, like SWAT).

This is for fat lost
For fat loss I'd say either way is fine, however, if you want to maintain lean tissue I'd put weights first. Though basically the rule of thumb is wherever you are trying to advance the most; that is what should go first.
Not to get ahead of myself, but I do have one semi-rant to go on here. Most people try to create this duality between fat loss and muscle gain -- when in reality they want muscle gain. Now it depends on what your goal is, for example, someone trying to slim down because he's a distance runner might not be too discriminant about whether he losses muscle or how he looks afterward he sheds pounds because the overall purpose of what he is doing is to create a body more suitable for endurance exercise. Though most people for whom "losing fat" is a buzz word are really looking for that shredded, washboard ab look. This is a little bit of a misrepresentation fueled by TV and movies.
Underneath fat is not a beautifully sculpted physique, in fact what's underneath is probably grossly out of proportion, scrawny and soft. Most people who want to slim down want that very hard, grainy look you see in magazines. This is a little harder to achieve because in the fat cutting process you actually have to be able to put on and or maintain your pre-existing muscle tissue.
This means you have to train for hypertrophy and make sure to have a properly balanced diet capable of keeping your body at energy equilibrium. In other words you don't want too much of a surplus, and certainly never want a deficit of nutrients and energy fueling your body.
If this is your goal, I'd say weight train first and make your sessions both quick and intense. No more than one hour and no less than 30 minutes. Make sure you limit your rest periods to about 30 seconds to a minute depending and focus on every last rep and every last set until complete failure. Then hope on the treadmill and do some moderate steadystate. That should do you just fine.

The boby look I'm going for is really an issue at this moment - it will be- but right now I'm about 40 pounds overweught and my goal is to get to a healthy weight.
I was told that weight lifting first helps to lose weight quicker because by the time you get to the cardio you've started to burn mostly fat.
So does anyone know if there is a benefit in that scenario to lifting weights first?

ive been working out all my life but this is my first year consistently going to a public gym. has anyone else noticed that as the weather gets better and beach time is coming, people just surge to the gym? and they cant stop flexing in the mirrors after only their second workout.
also the younger crowd tends to compete with you. maybe thats just my area. i was doing regular pullups and all of a sudden these kids started laughing and saying things like "psh i could do that." the kid could only do six. and even when i would space my pull ups out so it wasnt like we were going one after the other (competing) he would always go right after i went. it was weird. maybe i was just thinking he was cocky bc of his haircut, maybe it was just a coincidence.

Pretty much all the reasons you listed. But a lot of people (including myself at first) get mixed up in the smaller details of lifting. Getting HYOOGE is not going to get you instant girls. Some more glances from them? Sure but if it's all muscle and you're a total tool then that's about it. Getting stronger is a good goal, but I know some of my friends make it into a pissing contest. Same with who has the better body. Fact is there is always someone out there who is better. I'm not being arrogant when I say I have a six pack while some of my other friends don't. I still wouldn't mess with them because they're stronger than me. You have to be in it for the right reason IMO.

In a year or 2, your metabolism should be at max levels so burning fat shouldn't be a prob unless people in your family are generally heavy. Just watch what you eat at this point, but no hardcore supplements or crazy exercises for you. you can do situps if you'd like :p

You can do cardio during weight training days, just make sure it's not too intense. Though your friend's split there is pretty common and a lot of people get good results from it. I believe Jag does a 3 days weights, 3 days cardio.

"Yeah, ya'know baby, I can do like 300 pounds easy but I don't mess around with that kind of weight anymore. I used to be all bulked dieseled, now I just go for that tone".
ha , i hate it when people talk about their glory days when they arent even 30 yet. they say things like "yeah i USED TO be able to do lift that much" or "yeah I USED to be that big." its just another way of trying to change peoples minds about you without a way of them verifying it.

ha i know. i dont think there was ever a time someone told me that and i believed them. a new kid at the college, who was very cocky in class anyway, said "Nah man. I'm not in the mood to work out. I used to be jacked. But now ever since I started drinking, it's all gone."
Im thinking "no you were not jacked." and the way he mentioned the drinking was like he was trying to flex that he drank while not of legal age. i remember when i was 19 ha. if he wasnt so cocky and trying to act tough all day in the first place i might have believed him. but it all fit the picture that he was jsut all talk, too well.

I have to at least eat an hour prior to doing a workout like cardio. Oatmeal with soymilk. Or a peanut butter sandwich and banana. Keeping it simple.

When you first wake up, your body is hungry and looking to eat. I usually have a protein shake as soon as I wake up. On days that I do morning cardio, by the time I start my morning routine, 15-20 mins has passed and I'm good to start my run. By the time I get back, shower, and finish my routine I'm ready for my first "solid" foods and second meal of the day.

So some questions on protein shakes and various other ones.
I'm eating 3 meals a day and I'm mostly doing cardio work(cycling) and weights twice a week. Do you recommend taking protein shakes? I take in good bit of protein anyway each day. And if I do start on protein shakes, would I be replacing a meal? I'm not looking to bulk up, but just loose weight and look somewhat in shape.
Is there any other shakes to replace meals with and would any of you recommend them?

Sorry to hear that, Hush. I enjoy the atmosphere at the local 24. Everyone, on the whole, keeps to themselves. Friendly, helpful staff as well. I've been to other gyms, in the past, that seriously discouraged me from going back for the reason you mentioned. Hope you get to Gold's, someday.

a question: what do all you guys lift for? and be honest with yourself.
is it the strength, the look, the challenge, the girls, respect of other guys, health, etc?
if its a mix of those things, which reasons would make up the mix of why you guys lift?
Well, I lift for appearance since I wrestle and the look is a big part of it. That's only part of why I lift though. Since wrestling takes a big toll on the body I lift for injury prevention and general wellness too. I get more than enough cardio in the ring each week, though I might hit the treadmill at least once a week and run a mile.
My routine pretty much consists of compound lifts, followed by some ab work and yoga to finish off. I'm not a fan of the isolation stuff, I mostly stick with deadlifts, pull ups, bench, squats, military press, leg press, dips, and good mornings. I'll throw some curls in there every once in awhile if I feel the biceps aren't getting as much of a burn as they need but the pull ups pretty much take care of them.
Lifting is done via the push/pull method and bilaterally/unilaterally alternated from workout to workout. Rep range I change every 3 weeks or so; generally stay in the neighborhood of 6-12.
I'll say this, to anyone who's got back pain or joint pain. I'd recommend the best thing to break the vicious cycle of pain is good mornings for the lower back and yoga. Screw everyone who says it's for girls, yoga is amazing.

ha, I just started it. Tivo'd it cause my brother wanted to watch 24. It's going really well. I hit a tough stride about a month ago when my back started bothering me, but some good mornings+yoga fixed that. I manage to train only once a week on saturday mornings and wrestle saturdays after that since law school takes up all my time, and then whatever time I have left goes to the gym. I'm probably gonna head to FCW in tampa next summer. That gives me a year to get my body in tip top shape. I'm 6'2 and at about 223 right now. I need another 10lbs of muscle so it's gonna be a rough year.

My current fav protein shake
some old fashioned oats(about 1/4 cup)
A table spoon and a half of plain yogurt made with whole milk.
2 scoops of ON procomplex vanilla.
1 whole banana
some grapes/half an apple/half a pear
half a grapefruit
about 1/4 to 1/2 cup OJ
add 3 ice cubes and blend = delicious.
Had to bookmark your recipe there. Making me hungry for a good shake.

Ive been doing 3 days a week of weights and 3 days a week of cardio for about a week now and just needed some info.
Ive got skinny arms and a kinda fat stomach, also been watching what ive been eating, split my meals into 6 a day instead of 3 and eating more fruits and veggies and stuff. Calculator says i should be eating 1675 calories a day.
The question is, is it possible to build muscle on the arms and lose weight on the stomach at the same time ??
Thanks. :D

I would assume so. Losing fat is all about diet and cardio, and building muscle is about diet and lifting weights. Somewhere in the realm of your diet, there's a middle ground where you can make sure you're not consuming too many calories (especially empty calories like ice cream or sugary stuff) so you can lose the fat, and you can eat enough protein to build muscle.

ha haha no it doesnt! we just dont like people that sit on the machines for 10 mins at a time. right. also i dont know if you guys know anyone here that does it, but every gym has one guy who takes it "so seriously" because he has no other talent or hobby and he's not even that big or strong for his size. every gym also has its own loudest grunter.

Carbs are good before a run, but within 45-60 min. after a run you should be eating more protein than carbs. Also how long are you running, if it's around 3-5 miles probably don't need to worry about the carbs beforehand.

Don't run every day, that's a perfect way to injure yourself, through overrunning/training. I run Tuesday-Thursday, Saturday and Sunday is (supposed) to be crosstraining, any exercise beside just running and this is training for a marathon. That is a good amount of mileage though, so yeah carb-rich food before, protein-rich food after, also hydration is key.

I wish you good luck in your wrestling endeavors. Do you have a webpage or anything?
Nah, it's not like it was even 7 years ago. WWE doesn't scout indy shows anymore. Why would they when they have their own developmental territory? The way to do it nowadays is to polish up and when you're ready head down to FCW and take a shot.

Say you naturally have a small chest or small shoulders or whatever muscle group is naturally small for you, but the other muscle groups are big at the end of your bulking phase and you want to cut. Is there a way to keep one muscle group the same size, while cuttin and having the rest reduce a bit? Like this:
Mon - Workout biceps, get good protein and food
Tues - Eat lots of protein and calories to supply the biceps with recovery
Wed - Same as Tues then...
Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun - Lots of Cardio, losing weight stuff etc.
Meaning can you keep growing one muscle group, but then do cardio after that muscle group has healed to lose the body fat?

After a good nights sleep it really did the trick, though. Like I never was sick. :)

Personally, I use free weights mostly because I was told it forces one to balance and control the weights versus weights with guides (cables). Since using weights I feel my wrists and lower back are stronger, actually.
I guess it depends where you're at physically to determine how much weights you ought to do and so forth. So not to strain yourself. Hopefully, one of the experts here can give some advice to you. I'm still a newbie in the gym department and can only speak from my limited experience.
Besides gaining strength I think you'll have more stamina as well as a result. Especially, when lifting kids all day.

after two months of wanting to add weights to pullups, my main exercise, i finally figured out an idea on how to do that. my gym doesnt have those weight belts. and i have some weights at home i hold in between my legs when i do dips...but the only pullup utensil in the house is a door and thats not offering proper form and weight distribution.
i do my pullups at the park.

Yeah, I told you to try that one, it works just fine.
I have done it despite having a dip belt and a weight vest.
Remember if you put a weight plate or dumbbell in there (weight plate would be better), try to fill the backpack with towels and all to prevent it from sliding around on you, if you use it for other moves like pushups and all.

Week 10 of marathon training down, did 16 miles for the long run this week. Most of the way back was in rain/freezing rain and a nasty wind right in my face. Felt so great to finish the run, especially after 12 of the 21 people in my pace group dropped out early and took cabs back. Everyone that stayed knew we'd be kicking ourselves all day if we didn't finish, so we stuck it out. This weekend was really the first time I felt fully confident I'll be able to run the full marathon, if I could survive that run in those conditions, there's nothing that'll stop me.

Don't get too excited, we're just friends, but she is very attractive for a figure model, who aren't necessarily all attractive. Figure isn't really based on anything but muscular development and they have a very narrow criteria which the girls have to meet. Last year, three friends of mine competed, this year it's only Jenny, which is unfortunate because the other girls had a lot of natural talent. Either way I'll be working backstage at the show this year (not competing) -- but I'll probably be back into it next year.

SB is this the same girl you said was a 9?
Anyway, back to my crazy question: During a cutting phase, is there a way to workout one muscle group one day, the next day continue to get good protein and rest, the day after that do the same until the muscle reaches full recovery, and then the rest of the week just do cardio to cut? (i.e 1 day work out muscle, 2 days of proper food and rest, 4 days cardio?)
I ask this because what if one of your muscle groups is severely tiny compared to the others. During the cut phase can you actually keep making that ONE muscle group bigger, while the rest kind of diminish from the cut?

(I am getting addicted to those Starbucks Coffee Engry drinks) They don't even work on me, must be because I work hard all day and cafferine don't do **** for me anymore except for the coffee in the morning.
And I am adding up row rights (with curlbar) to my workout. So I hit those shoulders. And does them behind the back dumbells work the forearms? I've been doing them for a while now.
What Starbucks Energy drinks are you talking about? Those things are pretty bad for you...

Salmon is arguably the most healthy meat for you.
All those energy drinks and sodas will actually detriment your workout pretty badly. You'll have slightly more energy due to the caffeine, but all those sugars and carbs will likely counteract all the "extra" work you're doing. On top of that, sugar crashes suck. :down

It tasted good, straight outta that can.
Most of my cafferine intake is before I work out.
And I've asked some people I know...gonna ask here because I can. I've popped my right knee twice taking showers last week (on accident). And sometimes...I get a sharp pain in my right knee while pushing carts...feels like it is in the knee. A friend of mine said it could be nerve damage or fluid buildup in my knee. Cause I can crack/pop a lot of my bones from the knee down in my right leg every so often. It may be awhile before I can get it checked out, so I ma trying to wear my knee sleeve when I work. I got knee sleeves when I had bilateral hamstring strains.

Ok, my weakest large muscle area is most definitely my chest muscles. While I am improving on this in my regular workouts, will it do me any good to practice my pushups randomly whenever I get the urge?
It will help you get better at pushups.
Doing that is a bit like the "grease the groove" program that I have used and recommend for anyone trying to increase numbers on a certain exercise (pushups, pullups, etc).

Fixed my bench press form today(elbows tucked in) and it made a world of diff. Less shoulder involvement, more chest
What do you mean Spoons? Im curious if there is maybe a picture to let us know the difference.

Yeah, give us a visual example, if possible.

Um...I can't really visualize regular grip bench with elbows tucked in or close to you. Close grip I can. So, like the others, please show a pic.

I posted this in that "Bowflex" thread a minute ago, but since it was pretty dead, I wanted to post it here as well.
They just had their third recall on this "machine."

I'll try to find a pic. Basically, the way I was benching before was with my arms perpendicular to my body(almost a complete 180 degree angle). I noticed that my shoulders were way too sore after chest day so I tucked my elbows in to about 45 degrees; bringing them closer to my body. Way more pec muscle fibers were recruited and my delts were demoted back to stabilizer status....as it should be
I kinda see how that works.

Thats not true. enterthemadness said; "Guys, if I want to put on weight..."
I'm assuming he's talking about muscle. Muscles need glucose to grow; glucose is derived from "all those sugars and carbs" - another name for glucose is called "blood sugar".
Muscles store glucose as glycogen. When doing resistance training the body will quickly metabolize that glycogen for fuel for the muscles. Eventually that supply will quickly run out.
So Enterthemadness drinking that energy drink before he works out is actually beneficial as he will have a higher free floating blood sugar level, which will trigger an insulin spike which aids in the absorbtion of glucose back into those starving muscles.

My husband and I did the yoga class at 24 for the first time, and boy did I feel relaxed/de-stressed afterwards. We both agreed we need to do this class at least once a week.
And this particular class was perfect for beginners, too. The poses were not too pretzel-like. :oldrazz: I've done yoga before but I never had an instructor with such a soothing voice as hers was. During the meditative parts I thought I was going to fall into a wonderful, deep sleep.
This morning I am so feeling my workout, though. My legs, in particular, are on fire! *drinking lots of water*
The day before yesterday we went out for a 4.5 mile evening run and did a few hills. The fresh, cool air felt so good. I love a good run to kick out all the stress and crappy feelings (yeah, been that kind of a week). Was bouncing off the walls afterward and hungry as hell. :woot:
Killed my legs yesterday, dear God it was amazing.
