I got 160 today at the rec on Squats. So, now that's my max. Got it 3 times, too.

So, my maxes now...

Squats 160.
Seated leg press 290
Incline Press (I call it a chest machine) 250.
Bench 160 (Quit bench though, unless I start up again with a spotter or use the one on that power rack cage. One with the safety thing on it)
Back Machine (I can't remember the correct name ) 60 lbs
Curlbar 45
Up right rows 55

By August, my goals are...

Squats 180 (started on May 29th...Max then was 140, already gone up 20 pds with 160 now) Course, everytime I do Squats I try for a max at the end of the workout. Good or bad?
Seated leg press 350
Chest Machine (Incline Press) 290
Bench -----------
Back Machine 80
Curlbar 55
Up right rows 75

Is any of this attainable to me?

Trying for 255 tomorrow on the incline press. Oh yeah, my dumbell are at 40 and tricep reverse dips at 40, too.

All of your goals are attainable by August (do you mean Aug 1st or end of Aug?-just curious).

By the way, my suggestion is to do dumbbell bench press. I like the move a lot more than barbell bench (uses stabilizers more, better range of motion) and you dont have to worry about a power rack or spotter.

Let us know how it is. Im all about trying all of ON's flavors.
How do I describe this? It's how I imagine apple pie flavored bubblegum would taste. And I'm talking light on the artificial apple flavor, heavy on the crust flavor. I should've stuck with cookies & cream.

Question for Spoons: How far from [where we met] is the gym you regularly attend? I'm looking for a gym to get a membership to, since my school's isn't open over the summer... I really need to find one to hit up over the summer to stay in shape for my job.

There are no inexpensive gyms around where we met you :csad: And most of them have a long contract, to boot. I'd recommend joining a Snap fitness or something, as they only require you to join for a month at a time.

So I could really use some advice. I'm from the uk.

I'm 23 yo/male I am 5ft 10" tall and I weigh just over 10 stone (140lbs) Iv'e always been naturally slim and so has my dad so I think part of its genetic? But I find it very hard to put weight on.

I dont as of now do any proper exercise, because my job involves walking around a superstore quite quickly all day. And by the end im pretty tired.

I eat healthily, 3 meals a day not much junk ( usually once a week ). And I get 3 to 5 fruit/vedge a day. What I want to do within the next 4 months is put on about 20 lbs so that I'm a pretty ideal weight for my height and I want it to be muscle.

What should I do? I was thinking go out for a 3 mile run every other day. And do sit-ups and push ups everyday. I dont think I want weights because I'd rather tone more than bulk up. All I want is that extra 14-20 lbs and to be fitter and maybe get some nice abs lol. Any adivice would be great thanks :)

You should tell them you will sign the contract if they waive the activation fee altogether. Clark Howard says that is one of the biggest scams in the fitness industry and often if the person says they will sign up as long as they dont have to pay the fee, they will waive it. It doesnt hurt to try.

You'll want lean protien in between the meals you are already eating -- tuna, boiled chicken, a whey supplement like some of us are already taking. I would think that should help you bulk up without gaining fat. :)

If you want to add the weight, first of all I wouldnt bother with the run. Its not going to add any muscle and from what you said, you are already thin.
Dont confuse yourself with words like "tone" and "bulk." If you want muscle tone, then you (at your height and weight) need to add muscle (thus, you do need to bulk). I am assuming that your bodyfat is fairly low based on your height and weight.

Just as a point of reference, I was your size in high school and I did pushups, situps and plenty of running. I was just skinny. I was "in shape" but I just didnt have much muscle to show for it or anything. 5' 11" @ 145 is thin.

I got into resistance training (i.e. weights) and started eating more in college. I put on about 25 pounds and was about 170 @ 4-5% bodyfat. All of a sudden, everyone was saying "Damn dude, you are ripped! You are cut!" And dont get it wrong, 5' 11" @ 170 is not big at all. In fact, I have a picture of me at that size and I will post it later to show you. I still was thin, but because of the added muscle, I looked much better.

Im not saying you cant get add some muscle and all with just bodyweight work, but it wont be with the random sounding program that you mentioned above.

Do the compound lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press and pullups among others) and eat plenty of good clean food. Eating a good bit is as important or more important as the exercise at this point.

I found the picture..its kind of crappy bc it is avatar size for my account on another site. But if you look at my arms you can see plenty of definition or "tone." I will try to post a full size or another one later.

Squats are going to be key for you to achieve your goals.
All of the compound lifts are, really, but squats are pretty much king of the lower body exercises and some say THE exercise for the whole body if you want to add muscle.

I've been doing this shoulder workout for only 3 weeks and I've noticed GREAT results. just thought some of you guys that wamt to put on weight would be interested.

4x10 Barbell shoulder press
3x10 Dumbell shoulder press
3x10 Bent lateral extension
3x30 barbell shrugs. pick a set of weights and do 30, then move down 5 pounds and do 30 of those, then move down 5 pounds again and do 30. Repeat this process three times
I carry around 10 pound weights with me in the the gym and do 10 standing up shoulder extensions, and 10 frontward extensions between every set of every exercise.

Only guilty of two fo those :o. Seated leg press (which I find to be a good exercise, but mostly that's after doing squats. Cause my legs/thighs are still tired from doing squats). Um....yeah.

I find that wearing socks, jean shorts, a t-shirt and having my wallet and smokes in my pocket...I wear three pds more. :csad: which means that 131 ain't real weigh, I actually still weigh 128. Damn it. Maybe if I drink more water it will help? Kinda bad I've been working out for a good month and only have 4 pds of added weight to show for it.

I am ok with the leg press as well. As he pointed out, the main problem there is that people load it up very very heavy and often they have the strength to push it, but their joints and things may not be up to it.
I like the leg press as a good compliment to the squat, just like you said.

I am ok with the leg press as well. As he pointed out, the main problem there is that people load it up very very heavy and often they have the strength to push it, but their joints and things may not be up to it.

While I agree with the majority of the article, this guy needs to get someone to check out his typos and grammar if he plans to write articles.

Notice a lot of what he points out deal with the shortcomings of machines as compared to bodyweight and free weight exercises (something discussed in this thread many times).

Be sure to check out #5. LOL!Alas I do many of these. :(

I use the leg extension machine and have no trouble, but then I am a weakling and don't push much weight -- 60lb on a slow rep, 70 on a fast rep.

I also use the butterfly machine - again not pushing much weight -- 50lbs. I use the fourth hole so I am not extending too far back. This was recommended to me because my posture isn't that great. I slouch and my shoulders slump forward. This exercise gets me to push my shoudlers back into a proper alignment. It doesn't hurt me at all.

I love the elliptical machine too. I can't run on account of my arthritis so thsi is the next best thing. It doesn't trouble my knees in the least bit and if you put enough resistance on it, you can burn a fair amount of calories on it. I don't use the arm thingies, though, it bothers my left shoulder. I use my Ipod when I am on there and with enough fast music, you can crank on that thing pretty well. :)

I use the leg press as well, but I only have two 45lb plates on there. It doesn't bother my knees. I was told this can be used safely if you aren't a weiner and don't push too much weight too fast by doing quick reps. I go fairly slow. But then I do regular squats as well as part of my routine so...

You really could drop this and add an extra set of squats or something, just as an upgrade.

I HIGHLY suggest that you do pushups instead of this. It will help w/ your posture and shoulder slumping A LOT more than this machine.

I havent made any secrets about how I dislike the elliptical. I know that it is more comfortable for those w/ bad knees and they may be the only exception that I make to that, but there are just sooo many better forms of cardio and cardio equipment out there.

As I stated, I probably wouldnt have had this on my own list. In fact, if I were to pick my next 5 pieces of equipment to purchase, this would likely be one of them. As you stated, dont kill yourself on it and you will be fine. Great supplement to squats imo.

I have had trouble with pushups in the past. Not so good for my wrists, though I did buy a set of flor handles.

I will still argue in defense of the elliptical. I love that thing. Maybe it's becuase I can't run for crap and it's just not good for my knees. I've lost so much weight on the elliptical and the upright/recumbant bikes combined. For those of us that aren't jocks, the elliptical is wonderful. Yeah, I say that you should get on those pushups. Remember to keep your core tight and back flat. When I had the guys come over the other day I had 2 new guys whose hips were sagging to the ground the whole time on the pushups and I tried to correct them a few times, but they kept reverting back to that. I knew it was going to be ugly.

Im definitely not saying that you cant lose weight using an elliptical, but I believe there are a lot of other better forms of cardio and cardio equipment out there. Just my opinion.

Go eat a lemon! I love the treadmill. Walking and running are completely natural movements. I can understand if you don't like the fact that you never get anywhere, though. The only way I can tolerate the treadmill is if I have headphones and music on.

I just remembered something from a phys ed class I had in high school. The teacher was making us run a mile on the school's track, but even she commented that she'd never be able to run a full mile if it meant running in a circle over and over. I remember hating walking around that track as a teen, but I didn't have any trouble walking home from school for one full hour when I missed the school bus and didn't have any city bus money.

Hahaha.

No, I just hate the limited nature of the treadmill really. I dont particularly like using a standard track either, partially for the reasons you mentioned. The ONLY advantage of a track (IMO) is that you know exactly how far you have gone and can track your pace and progress. Well, some of them have forgiving surfaces as well, but not all.

Treadmills are kind of dangerous as well...at least for those uncoordinated.

It's like a magic trick...but one that can kill you. I like the elliptcail machine....but I rather play basketball for 15-40 mins nearly 6 days a week. More fun.

And I find now that I've been doing squats that the seated leg press is more of a workout. Esp with I get into the 3 sets of 6 and only give myself 10 sec of rest time bewteen sets.

I want to say that's fake, but I've gone to lunch with two different co-workers who ate a ton. I went to In & Out Burger with one, and he ordered two cheeseburgers and some fries. You had these people who came in and ate there every day, and not the healthy stuff either. There were these 2 girls, sisters who used to come in every day because they worked close by, you shoulda seen the transformation over the course of a year, went from being decent looking to fat.

Convenience is a b****. My old job was at the edge of town, and the only other businesses in walking distance were a Wal Mart, a gas station, and a Jack in the Box directly across the street. Thank god our lunch breaks were a full hour, or I wouldn't have had the time to drive to civilization and back to find some decent food.

24 hour fitness type of gyms rarely have anything like that. Many of them discourage deadlifting and dont allow any olympic lifts.

I just use my power rack for all that kind of stuff actually.

Actually all of the 24 hours I have been to (only 3 or 4) with the exception of the one closest to my new place have power racks. I never really ever see any workers correcting anyone or telling them they can't (drop weights) or (are going to hurt themselves).

And this gym seems to have quite a few very big guys, but no power rack. WTF!

Some serious BS! So that's why I am thinking about getting my own weights (bumpers) so I can just lift at home and go to the gym when I want to or feel like playing basketball on a court or something.

By the way, I found those instructions for making bumpers out of tires.

They all work out, check each other out while working out and sweaty and it leaves us straight guys with nowhere to work out.

My aunt has various health issues so I suggested to her that she buy the EAS whey protien, thinking it might help her out like it did me. She bought EAS soy instead by accident. She had some kind of allergic reaction to it so she gave the rest to me to try. It was gross. :( It's not so much that it tasted bad, but it doesn't mix well like the whey does and it was like drinking dust. Steer clear.

Typically I first lift weights, then hit the treadmill, then drink my whey protein. Is this a good order to do things in? I don't know if I'm drinking my protein soon enough after I lift, and I don't know whether I should be doing my cardio before or after lifting.

I don't think it matters when you do any cardio. Why protein says half hour or hour after working out.

I had some dinner after working out today. Have a protein shake round 10 or so...be hitting the hay at 1 after Conan is off.

Think I tweaked my right knee...something close to it while doing squats. My knee...the right one likes to slide to the left when doing squats. Should fix my form now.

Did the following...

Squats
3 set 5 at 140
2 set 5 145
3 set 3 150
3 set 5 155

Did 8 pull ups.

Hit the back machine thing that I can't remember and it pisses MKnightshamolock off.

3 set 10 at 40 lbs
3set 10 at 50
3 set 8 at 60

Did another set of pull ups, getting 7 this time.

Did about 7 mins of cardio at the esclipse machine. Mins 2-4 I went nearly full speed though, tried to do some HITT. THAT...wore me out.

Try ****ing doing it 2 hours while it's busy. I've done it NON-STOP for a HOUR in over 80 or 90 degree heat. Hell, I've done it non-stop without a 15 min break for four hours. Don't work at Walmart no more, haven't in over a month now. But I did my job for nearly 2 years...that's a hard job. I've pushed carts in shorts...in 25 degrees...35 degrees...45...degrees. .....not an easy job. People are like, 'Oh, it's easy'. Ummm...yeah...not when the parking lot is um....least 300 yards wide...and soemtimes you have to cover it ALL by yourself and it's a bit busy. And doing it by hand...pushing anywhere from 10-20 at a time....not good. Wears down your legs, knees, and strains your lower back in a hurry. Not only that, two of my coworkers have been hit by cars. I've seen people do 25-35 in a Walmart parking lot. Don't get me wrong....it can be a easy job...but when you don't have enough people and it's busy...you're ****ed...and not where you want it at. I've pushed carts in 115...that's with the heat index. I've pushed carts in the rain AND Snow. And all for a high pay of 7.90. Hell...my last month on the job, I chased after a stray cart that was going towards a car...my shoe came off and I tripped. Skinned my left elbow, small part of my lower back, AND one of my ankles. And I still shot up and got the mother****ing cart before it hit the god damn car. I've come within feet of getting hit by cars. Heck, I've pushed carts under a ****ing Tornado watch AND Warning.

I'd like to add the only time a Stockman (aka Cart Pusher) comes inside due to bad weather is when we see lightning. Heavy Rain...well, that's what a rain suit is for. I was off when a Tornado actually hit the parking lot. Flipped an RV that for some reason was parked far out in the lot. Almost killed a friend of mine. He was outside going to his car or something...he barely got back inside in time. He said it took the lines of cart reserves outside the bay and it bent the lines all up. And it even knocked off the W off the food side of Walmart. I can't remember for sure If I saw the ****ed up lines of reserves or not the next day.

Oh, and there's nothing more fun than being outside in wind gusts hitting 50 miles an hour. Course, that was kinda fun...and seeing a run a way Food Lion cart (who was using a FL Cart at a Walmart?!) smash into 3 cars within secs was something to see. It took off and I was looking and was like 'I ain't chasing after that, **** it.' :o I even went to Best Buy to get stray carts too...cause we were asked to get out carts at Best Buy. Yeah...that's already like a 10-15 min walk ish from Walmart...trying pushing like 7 carts for that long...adn then you have cars coming up behind you...not good.

Oh worked out in those terms. No,...that's only if you sadly have to push the metal ones(I always heard those ones were a pain in the ass to push) It's a work out in terms of constant cardio. Although, you do workout the legs and thighs/hamstrings. It's a real pain in the ass. I was working out and talk to a former co-worker on the inside today. Even with two new people the stockman still get chewed out. Management always chew out us. If you mean putting on musucle, only in the thighs really. Cart Pushing...I say every day...8 hour work day...probably equal to about going on a 4-7mile run. Except your pushing, and sometimes your hulling ass. :o you should have asked? Is it a pain in the ass cardio workout? Yea... yes it is.Lifting weights is easier. When I pushed carts I lifted up the back end, which was a bit of a workout for the arms. Did that cause it was easier to go faster and turn though.

I think most of us do cheat days about once a week. If I went months without eating something decadent, I'd become the most ornery mofo on the planet Earth.

I think your best bet is to not cheat too badly on your cheat days. Have one or two slices of pizza or just a personal pan size, but don't eat too many slices, and skip the side of bread and dipping sauce. You know, stuff like that.

Im with you on this Spoons. I HAVE worked in that same position at a large grocery store and the heat in Augusta (plus the humidity) is worse than anywhere in North Carolina.
I will also add that we had to wear pants, no shorts were allowed, even in summer. So it was very very hot and uncomfortable at times.

Yes, it is a way to sweat and all that and is definitely good physical activity (and I agree, a pain in the ass), but as far as calling it "working out" Im with Spoons...you wont set any personal records in the squat no matter how many carts you are pushing.

I know someone who asked me to help them move. Obviously this is always a pain in the ass, but this person scheduled it when I was supposed to be at the gym. I told them that I would, even though I was supposed to get my workout in at that time and they said "well, this can be your workout." As much as it may strain the muscles to lift a couch or two and sweat from taking the stuff outside in the heat...that wasnt a replacement for an actual proven training program that I had planned that day.

Just my 2 cents (from someone who has done the cart pushing).

I also disagree that it is equal to a 4-7 mile run, cardiowise.

I'm not so sure about that. That's about $1500 per hour. Actors can sometimes spend 15 hours per day on set filming, so that's $22,500 per day. Assuming he worked everyday (which is a stretch), that's $675,000 per month. How many months do actors spend filming, anyway? 3? 4? That's $2.7million per movie. Pitt was making at least $10million per movie back in the 90's, according to Hollywood.com (http://www.hollywood.com/news/Hollywoodcom_Sounds_Off_Hollywoods_AList/770607).

For the record, my job at a department store has me unloading trucks on most days. That means unloading boxes, loading them on dollies/carts, unloading them onto the sales floor, repeating until the truck is empty, then going out to the sales floor, putting product on the shelves, loading the excess product back onto a cart, and stocking it in the back room.

Then I go to the gym. And I'm horribly out of shape.

You stayin hydrated during all this?

Sometimes, yes, sometimes no. Sometimes you get so busy in the work you forget to drink water. But in the latter part there, I was drinking more water. In the summer times I got or 7-9 bottles of water. Lowest was 6. Spring winter was 3 to almost 5. I was really one of the few people that really worked my ass off...but overtime I said **** it and started using the machine even by myself last few months on the job. But doing it by hand...I was like...the Kobe Byrant of stockman. If it were busy, I would get 10 or so and haul ass with them, even would sometimes get 15 or 20+ at a time and push. But that's a safety issue even it more than 10 or 12.

I doubt you can do 2 minutes of burpees non stop. In fact, if you CAN do them for 2 minutes or more straight NON STOP I will Paypal you $50. You just have to post a video and prove that it is you somehow.
$50 for 2 minutes of work...thats more money per hour than Bard Pitt makes!

I doubt I could too, but I should have said...like I would make myself do that rather than pushing carts in the summer, rain or when it is busy.

Okay...well, I was basically always outside (granted I did fool around at times and smoke). Outside of two 15 min breaks...an half hour or hour lunch or going to the bathroom or doing carry in or carry outs for customers I was ALWAYS suppose to clean the lot. But I imagine Walmart is the worst place for pushing carts. Most of the managers there want you to work, work, work, don't even sit down to catch your breath attiude.

And on the miles thing. Would 1-3 be more like it? Cause a pair of shoes would be almost no good after 6 months really. The bottom of them be coming off and ****.

I wasnt being literal, even though it sounded like it Im sure.
My friends and I used to talk about those sort of comparisons ever since Sports Illustarted did a break down of Michael Jordan's pay per minute, per dunk, and things like that.

No doubt you are on your feet and doing plenty of walking and all, plenty to wear out your shoes. I was just comparing it cardiowise to the 4-7 straight miles that you mentioned.

You may actually, throughout the day, burn the amount of calories that you would on a 4-7 mile run ands you may actually take as many steps as you would on a 4 mile run...again..throughout the day. I wont deny that. My statement had more to do with the cardio factor. Running 4-7 straight miles is a beyootch. Trust me.

With the pushing of the carts, as you mentioned, there are breaks, some standstills, and so on. The 4-7 miles is about an hours worth of work with no rest and no stopping. Thats my only point of contention with that statement.

So total steps, total calories...yeah you may be right.
But cardio wise, its definitely a different ball game.
