Just to be on the safe side I've sent a Cylon to fall in love with WHF and then kill him as per her mission instructions so he can't post in this thread.

Zenien.

I mean, I don't even know what to say. Do you not see how freaking stupid this is? It's so nerdy. GOD!

The only reason you hate Sci-Fi and "nerdy" things so much is due to your own insecurity about your relative coolness and ability to be liked; these things are in direct relation to that in your mind. Just because something has space ships doesn't mean it can't have compelling characters, sharp narrative, and well done themes. It's no different from any other work of the imagination except in your own biased head!

Video games are nerdy WHF, being a PC gamer more so, run for the hills!

Now that the question on your intelligence has been addressed (again) there's really no need for you to be in this thread.

So leave.

Zenien

It's the fact that you honestly think you have a point that makes all of this so sad.

Spider-Gamer

Can't we all just get along? :)

Tremere
02-16-2006, 02:02 AM
Or, it's just really fake bull**** too far up it's own clich'es asses to actually mean a damn to me.
Up it's own clich'es asses? What does that even mean? Give examples or something, preferably visual since words aren't doing the trick here. Unless of course you were just throwing as many words that you thought sounded good into a sentence as possible hoping to make your "point" seem more intelligent and well thought out because you know what cliche means, in which case you may carry on.

Right, just like things that have realistic, or cool settings, can also have. I can watch things that don't have stupid, six headed aliens and butt-faced martians to get me "compelling character" fix.
I've never in my entire life seen a single sci fi with a six headed alien or a butt-faced martian. Seriously, ever. I've seen Star Wars, Star Trek, Galactica new and old, and I have never seen anything like you describe. The only thing cliche here are your bull**** reasons for hating sci-fi and calling it nerdy in the hopes that someone on the internet will think you're cool. I'll let the irony sink in.

Actually it is, because it has things like this
http://blogs.starwars.com/static/img/image-selector/full/prequel-trilogy/episode-ii/19.jpg
Wow, one character that appeared in one movie of one series for one minute who was one percent as bad as some of the characters I've seen in settings you seem to prefer (like gears of war bull**** with "up it's own cliched ass" war characters that I've seen a million different times, as well as the convenienty overlooked sci-fi theme) is reason for you to hate an entire genre so much that you start tarding out whenever you hear it mentioned?

But they are nerdy for a purpose. It's technology and there's no way around it. However, Sci-Fi is just crappy TV, and I can get crappy TV in any genre.
You're right. It's all crappy TV. Every last bit of it. I mean, I know you're too cool to have actually watched any and to have found out, but I'll take your word for it. All crap.

Here's a clue, you obviously need one. Sci Fi tells it's story's just like everything else. It shares the same underlying themes and character archetypes as everything else. As a matter of fact, every sci fi movie and television show ever made could be translated into any setting you'd like and still maintain those things, because they do not change because of themes. Unless you hate all media, music, tv, movies, games, everything, which I doubt, you are left with only one reason to hate sci-fi: because you want to look cool, on the internet. Which I'll leave you on your own to figure out how retarded that is.

If you don't like sci-fi, or whatever, seriously, no one cares. I mean it. Absolutely no one. Not even one person. You probably don't even care. So the next time there is some sort of sci-fi related thread, we don't really care if you post or not. We won't miss your post if you decide to move on to something else. We're perfectly fine with not being told what is and isn't "nerdy" by someone who posts on a comic book message board to his internet friends about video games and going to college a virgin. So just stop.

Danalys
02-16-2006, 06:05 AM
sci fi has some advantages over regular series aswell. often the behaviour of aliens can be used to illuminate human behaviour through contrast. they are more free to deal with the question of religion because their religions are fictional. the setting and situation can be changed far quicker. one episode you can have diehard in space. the next something completely different.

Yeah I really wish I could join in, but I couldn't do it without getting spoilerized. :(

If you don't have the DVD sets, the official Battlestar site has deleted scenes for every episode, they're a good watch (Obviously I only look at them after I've seen the corresponding episode). In the case of the first episode of season 2, there are a LOT of XO/Adama flashbacks that they cut.

This weeks episode (They play on saturdays on SPACE) for me was Home part 2, so I guess I'm like a week behind even you. :(

For the first time ever I'm going to level a critisism at the show: Less Religion, more Adama blowing up Cylons and angst. :o

It just felt weird how Adama basically FORGAVE the president and everyone was like happy, a bit of a jump considering Adama was calling it Religious Crap like 2 episodes ago.

I thought it was ok, but I was sort of put off it becuase it felt like a pure filler episode, and the characters seemed a little too steeped in their architypes, probably due to the fact that they were bouncing around a lot, interviewing different people.

But mainly I'm just really anxious for Season 2 to get back to what made Season 1 and the begining of Season 2 so great... and I've been waiting for a space battle for like FOR EVER!

Well ok, the thing that sort of irked me was the ending where the cylons were sitting aroudn in the movie theater. I mean I understand that they have some grand plan, but it's not like they AREN'T trying to kill the fleet. It just seems a little odd that if they new the fleets location that they decided to send 2 fighters just to get the video tape report just for kicks.

It looks like the next episode will do nicely though. :D Can't wait for Saturday except I'll be at work and unable to watch it until like monday. :(

Yes yes, they want to make Babies with them and supplant them as gods chosen children or something but do not tell me anything if you've seen ahead. :o

Each season must have at least 300000000000000 tons of cylon wreckage generated by the Battlestar by the time the season finale rolls around, so far we're incredibly behind schedule. :(

It's not 100 percent clear... I mean WHY would they be going to such lengths to replicate themselves into something as close to humanity as possible? They consider themselves gods chosen but they're going to incredible lengths to mimmick they're creators and essentially take their place on the twelve colonies.

In Home part 2. Starbuck mentions that on Caprica the Cylons are reparing the infastructure and buildings on the planet... and then they have the whole farm set up to try and produce human/Cylon crossbreeds.

Beyond that, 6 is entirely inside Baltar's head, and not the same 6 from the pilot. So anything she says is somewhat suspect.

I can tell you they have a serious philosophical reversal in the end of season 2.

I was starting to worry that this season might not live up to season 1 but I'm happy to be proven wrong again and again and again. I couldn't believe that the president was advocating Caines assasination, tht was so totally awesome of her. :D

My prediction is that the PEgasus XO doesn't follow through with the command... but in all honesty I don't have any idea what's going to happen come next week.

As much as I don't like to say it, Galactica would be in a serious bind if it had to first the Pagasus, I mean it's missing over half of its hull plating and Pagasus is a far more current design of Battlestar.

Like every single person in the world disagrees with you, and it's cntinually rated within the top ten shows on TV, which is more then can be said for your precious sheild.
The Shield doesn't suck and doesn't have cliches for characters, which is more than can be said for Battlestar Sucktica. Get it, sucktica, because it sucks? Awesome.

Ha, she knows I'm not gay. And I don't really want to say "I don't want to talk to you anymore" because that makes me sound like some shallow guy who just used her or something, I'd rather we just sort of "grow apart as friends" or some bull**** like that, but it's like her dumb woman brains can't work that out, it's annoying.
You're a terrible person and you have to live up to it. You may sound bad, but you'll at least "set her free". You can be tactfull while explaining things, but you're not going to sound spotless in the big picture.

And then there's this other guy that I don't really like that recently got the internet (you read that right, he first acquired internet access in 2006) and he's always trying to talk to me as well, there needs to be a way to set up a chat bot like smarterchild or something to just respond FOR me instead of any away message or something to hide behind.
Just keep responding with "lol really?" to everything he says. Just copy and paste. He'll get the picture real soon.

Or just block him.

SCI FI announces Galactica spin-off!
WEDNESDAY - APRIL 26, 2006

by Darren Sumner

By the Lords of Kobol ... The SCI FI Channel has stunned fans today with the announcement of Caprica, a spin-off series from its top-rated Battlestar Galatica. SCI FI calls the potential new show "television's first science fiction family saga," centering on the history of the Adama family and the birth of the Cylons.

Set more than 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica takes place on the capital world of the Twelve Colonies. There humankind thrives, living in a peaceful society with the benefits of high technology. But the development of an advanced, robotic, artificial life form is about to change everything.

The show is in development by Galactica executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, 24 writer Remi Aubuchon, and NBC Universal Television Studio.

Here is the network's own description of the series:

The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot -- a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica) Caprica weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga.

The announcement comes as part of SCI FI's development slate of original scripted series, mini-series, reality shows, and new late-night programming, with no word on when Caprica might go into production or premiere on the cable channel. The development slate is a long-look ahead at what the network has planned and likely not a formal pick-up of the show -- and some series, for one reason or another, never see the light of day.

If the show receives an order to go into production, certainly don't expect to see it air this year.

Count on GateWorld to continue to follow developments as they happen. The third season of Battlestar Galactica premieres this October on SCI FI.

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2006/04/scifiannouncesigalacticais.shtml

I'm shocked that they would consider a spin off so early, I know that the ratings have been substancial, but wow. Of course this probably won't go into production for a while.

corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics. i prefer sexual action, corporate politics and techno-intrigue.

in all seriousness it doesn't really sound like a good premise for a series but i'd give it a try because of galactica.

Most everything based on Sci-Fi is overly cheesy.. and the special effects on this show are just that. Usually when special effects and etc. and characters don't intrigue me and seem sort of 2-Dimensional.. yeah. I can't watch the show.

It just didn't appeal to me.. it happens alot with futuristic-themed shows to me. The fluidity and believability just isn't there. I love Sci-Fi when it seems that everything is done casually or like how you'd seem the normal action done in life. Or when the characters really make you believe that this could be real.. It just doesn't cut it for me.

I suppose that it's not the show.. as much as it is I have very high standards of what Sci-Fi really should be. :(

I just did read what you said and it makes no sense. So please, if you're going to talk, make sense.

and BSG's effects are cheesy. They don't even give me the impression that they ever COULD be real.

That's like totally ironic. There's a ton more thought put into having a realistic approach then most Sci Fi space ship shows, and that includes having a much more realistic approach then StarTrek. No mater how much I like StarTrek, it's not realistic. Everything from the technology to the ship designs have strong elements that run totally contrary to logic and feasability.

And the actors give me the impression that they don't even want to be in the show. Lackluster performances all around.

That's your opinion, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people (http://www.syfyportal.com/news.php?id=2701) disagree (http://www.hollywoodnorthreport.com/article.php?Article=2931).

At least in Star Trek they truly seem to believe their own performances. And, I don't care if I'm dead to you, ugh. I don't see how anyone is hurting my feelings by saying that to me. It's a ****ing mediocre tv show! :o

Battlestar Galactica has great acting, in every way it is an explary example of a TV show that is distinctly above average. Outside of a few (top grade )actors in TNG, and DS9 in general, StarTrek has never had really strong acting performances as a whole. I don't agree at all with you comment about the actors not believing thier own performances.

(Granted ST is a good step up from most other Sci Fi!)

Ironic considering they're more closely based around real world mechanics and take care to consider what the real world requirements of space faring would be. They put much more consideration into realistic contraints then most Sci Fi space ship shows, and that includes having a much more realistic approach then StarTrek. No mater how much I like StarTrek, it's not realistic. Everything from the technology to the ship designs have strong elements that run totally contrary to logic and feasability. Well, apparently it's a matter of taste then. Because to me, it basically comes off with the feel I get from everything late night flick on the Sci-Fi channel. Mediocre actors, with a dull plot that is reminiscent of most every Sci-Fi tv show in existence. So, they battle the cylons, or whatever the hell they are, and are in an ongoing war with them.. and..??

Real life with something spacey in mind wouldn't be that glamourous. It'd be basically watching a show on the military today, but in space. Conflicts from time to time.. and then a lot of dull sitting around and normal activities going on from time to time. I don't want Sci-Fi to be that way.. but I want characters to at least have their own, non-cookie cutter backstories and agendas. :o

That's your opinion, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people (http://www.syfyportal.com/news.php?id=2701) disagree (http://www.hollywoodnorthreport.com/article.php?Article=2931). Does it matter to me if they disagree or not? Obviously not. I find the shows actors lackluster.. which is mainly the reason their actors haven't reached bigger and better things yet. Star Trek had a couple exceptions. Patrick Stewart turned out to be a brilliant big screen actor, and Nemoy found his own niche and expanded towards other showings. Though, I find Firefly's cast had many more energetic and charismatic actors than most other Sci-Fi flicks..

I don't agree at all with you comment about the actors not believing thier own performances. And I don't agree with you actually thinking these people are into their work while performing. I suppose this is why I prefer animated shows and movies over live action shows. With animated shows the actors almost never look bored or out of place, because, all you "see" is their voice.. and in Sci-Fi movies.. they usually do a better job of bringing out an actor's higher-grade performances.

I suppose to me, the characters just don't seem like they feel all too comfortable with the setting they're in. Some of them are worse than others, some are better. It's just not very believable to me. Seems more out there and helter skelter.

(Granted ST is a good step up from most other Sci Fi!)

Argh, I hate having to post after a quote. :o

Apparently not.
Wow, you sure showed that disobedient little bastard. He tried to talk **** about your repeated posting of the same damn thing (usually called spam, but you're a mod, so **** him, right?), and *WHAM*, he got a taste of what it's like to be the most badass, respected human being in society: The guy who sits around on his computer and plays pretend policeman on the internet with his comic buddies and has a fit whenever someone says anything that isn't the respect (brown nosing from idiots who say "lol" and "omgwtf!?" a lot) you normally get on the forums but no where else in life.

As for the actual thread before the e-gestapo took a break from their heavy schedule of being admired and praised by their peers to come in and be dumbasses, I used to watch BSG. I no longer do. That's pretty much all I can say about the quality of the show :o

The series has a cool "look" to it, but I mean, if that wears off on you, there's really nothing else there :(

Apparently you don't like characters unless they're putting people's faces on lit burner stoves. ;)

There's hypocrisy in there somewhere, and gay as a negative connotation usually equals instaban. Bye!

I've actually found that I don't like characters unless they're some sort of terrible bastard, so you're right :(

To add, it was all a joke. I actually think I might watch BSG just because of that teaser now. Looks a lot better than the bits and pieces I've seen floating around on late night tv.

I edited my last post, too. :p (the offensive one)

I was joking as well but re-reading it, it really comes off like an anti-joke.

Ah, I can't tell with you. And I edited it to say happy. :O

Just to mess with you, Zen.
