QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS REGARDING SUPERMAN RETURNS ONLY TO BE POSTED IN THIS THREAD... TAKE DISCUSSION TO ANOTHER THREAD
***THE FILM***
When will it come out?
International release date - 30 June 2006 (some markets are later check local guides)
When will we get the trailer?
*UPDATE*
According to the WB, SR trailer 1 will be released in May.
Whats the budget?
The film was budgeted at 184.5 million. This figure will grow with effects work... but is still South of 200.
*Quote taken from Singer at Wonder-Con 06*
What is the film about?
A number of things. First of all, its about Superman returning to a world he left. Its also about relationships and has an underlying theme of technology (especially reagrding how Kryptonian technology works).
Singer has stated that its about "What hapens when old boyfriends return".
Synopsis
Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the epic action-adventure Superman Returns, a soaring new chapter in the saga of one of the world’s most beloved superheroes.
While an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life. Or has she? Superman’s bittersweet return challenges him to bridge the distance between them while finding a place in a society that has learned to survive without him.
In an attempt to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space.
Whats the deal? Is it a restart?
*UPDATE*
It now seems that SR is more or less a direct sequel to the first two Superman films. A series of comics will be released linking the films and explaining what has been going on since Supermans exile.
Its a new Superman storyline with new, modern elements. The first two films serve as a "Vague History" for Superman Returns. Some elements will be familiar (The Fortress of Solitude, Kryptonite and the Kent Farm), while others will be new.
Does the show SMALLVILLE work with the same timeline as SUPERMAN RETURNS?
No. For the most part SMALLVILLE is an independant retelling of Supermans origins. The people involved with the show have hower added some elements from the old films (THE FOS) so people familiar with SMALLVILLES version of the mythos can make the step over to the more classical version of Superman.
Singer on the film...
"Rather than being a remake of the original movie," Singer added, "this film explores Superman's influence on our global culture and the impact of his return to Earth after an absence of several years. It's my great pleasure to bring this new chapter of the Superman legacy to the screen with this incredible cast."
***THE CAST AND CREW***
Who is making Superman Returns?
Director - Bryan Singer
Screenplay - Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris
Story - Singer and Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris
Producers - Gilbert Adler, Jon Peters and Bryan Singer
Mucic producer/Score - John Ottman
Who is in it?
Brandon Routh - Superman
Kate Bosworth - Lois Lane
Kevin Spacey - Lex Luthor
Marlon Brando - Jor-El
Sam Huntington - Jimmy Olsen
James Karen - Ben Hubbard
Frank Langella - Perry White
James Marsden - Richard White
Kal Penn - Stanford
Parker Posey - Kitty Koslowski
Eva Marie Saint - Martha Kent
Stephan Bender - Young Clark/Kal-El
What about the director?
Directed by Brian Singer. Singer has previously worked on the X-Men films. His sexual orientation (or that of the cast members) is not important to the film.
Who is this Brandon Routh and why is he Superman?
It was Singers intention to cast an "unknown actor" in the role. Aparantly, his screen test withj Kate Bosworth (playing Lois) is what got him over the line. The chemistry between the two was a very important factor in the casting process.
Brandon has appeared on a few TV shows in the past Including "Gillmore Girls" and "Cold Case".
Brandon had tested for the Superman role with one of the previous attempts at a Superman film.
How did Bosworth get cast as Lois?
Bosworth was cast after a screen testing process. Kevin Spacey suggested Singer test Bosworth for the role (Spacey and Bosworth had previously worked on Beyond the Sea).
***CHARACTERS***
Will Clark be a bumbling fool again?
Yes, Although I dont believe it will be exactly the same as Reeve's Clark.
Is Luthor the only bad guy? why no "Super villians"
Yes, Luthor is the only badguy in this film. There are no "Super Villians" in Superman Returns although they will "hint" at classic villians they can go on to use in the next films.
What about Lex? is he campy again?
No. While retaining some of his wit (he is an evil genius afterall) This version of Luthor is much darker and evil. According to the production team, Luthor has spent some serious time in jail and it has deepened his hatred for Superman.
Will Lex fight Superman if there are no "Super Villians"?
Indeed. Luthor is more than a match for Superman and will definetly get the better of him in this film.
What is Lex up to in this film?
Seems that lex is still hell bent on land (see SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE) Although this time its on a whole new scale.
Lex creates a new continent using Kryptonoan technology. At this point it seems to be an accident
This new continent is known as New Krypton and causes serious problems with the Earths natural balance
Lex has "Henchmen"... please tell me its not "OTIS" all over again!
It dosent seem that way.
Kal Penn plays one of Luthors henchmen... its unknown exactly what his role is.
Ian Roberts plays another, named Riley. From the blogs and set pics it seems that he is acting as Luthors videographer... documenting the rise of Luthor and the downfall Superman?
Parker Posey plays Luthors Girlfriend.
Who will Superman fight and what will the action scenes be?
First of all, Luthor... Although that wont be a battle of strength.
Superman will be doing more than just saving people and poor kittens stuck up in trees.
Lois has a boyfriend and a kid? WTF???!!!
Yes.
Lois is a strong, independent woman and has moved on (sort of ;) ) since Superman and Clark left her. She has a new boyfriend in the form of Richard White and they have a son together.
It is unknown what role the child plays and who the child really belongs to.
Is its Supermans kid?
Unknown.
Rumors are floating about supporting a number of theories on the "KID".
Does the kid have "special powers"?
Unconfirmed.
Is Pa Kent in the film?
No. He is dead. He may appear in a flashback of some kind.
***RANDOM SUPERMAN RETURNS FACTS***
SUPERMAN RETURNS is the first film to use the new Panavision Genesis digital cameras.
On the Breeza location set (Smallville/Kent farm) The crew had to grow their own corn for several key scenes.
A huge Metropolis set was constructed at the WB film studios on the Gold Coast... only to be dismantled and relocated to the main FOX Sydney studios after budget and time problems.
Several well known Sydney buildings in the CBD were given a facelift to fit into the film.
Brian Singer based his first X-Men film off Donner's Superman:The Movie.
Actor Ian Roberts (Playing Riley) is a former professional Rugby player.

Good stuff.
The land question is a bit incorrect though. We don't know if Luthor is creating new Krypton because he wants property (as in STM) but it's more likely due to the technology contained within his new version of the FOS.
It might also be worth adding a few question in regards to the marketing and distribution: Release dates, Trailers etc. as there are so many threads on these issues.

I have a noob question about the plot outline:
"Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space."
WHAT takes him to the depths of the ocean? I noticed that Singer is really pushing the SFX aspect of the film and I've heard him mention sequences where Superman does things that you've never seen a character do, which I assume is a very complicated SFX shot. I assume there is a shot that starts off in space and through ONE TAKE ends up in the ocean. What do you think it is? I say it's a meterorite or something. Or a spacestation or satellite in space that Superman has to retrieve; maybe there's people in it to add a double jeopardy.
Or vice versa. Maybe Luthor dumps Superman in the middle of the ocean after a particular scene in the Fortress of Solitude and for some reason, Superman escapes and has to fly to outer space. I still think we'll see a single take SFX shot that will make our jaws drop. It would be similiar to one of my favorite sequences from Superman '78 where he escapes Luthor's underground hideout and has to chase the rockets. I fricken LOVE that part with the great Williams music and all...

1- Lex stabbs Superman with Kryptonite then dumps his body into the ocean.
2- It is rumored that Superman throws New Krypton into space by going beneath it (to the depths of the ocean) and lifting it up.

1 Who's responsible for the VFX ?
As far as i know , SONY IMAGEWORKS is doing the bulk of the VFX with Andy Jones ( director of Final fantasy: The spirits within and Final Flight Of The osiris) overseeing 100 shots of a CG flying double of Brandon Routh.
2 Will there be any more blogs ?
3 Are there any spoilerific reports on the plane rescue scene ?
4 Will there be any super villains in this movie or the sequels ?
I know there aren't :) , but is there any reports on hints of them such as in the spiderman movies and the X-men movies

Noob question:

Yes, unknown but quite likely. The credits to the X-Men movies are quite elaborate and flashy, and I assume Singer will go a similiar route with Superman. He wants to stay as close to Donner's style and I think making the credits in a similiar fashion will suit that need. Plus the opening titles are quite important for establishing an initial mood, and nothing will do that like seeing that familiar opening title complete with Williams fanfare.

Or he's in some sort of stasis which is alluded to by the pictures of Superman in a fetal position in the ship. That or maybe it's Kryptonian technology similiar to that of the Phantom Zone. Singer did say there was going to be a lot of insight into Kryptonian technology (or did I dream that?).

Not sure at this point. We do know that the suit he wears (the bronze color jump/space suit) keeps him alive somehow. I assume the spaceship also has a life support system of some sorts.
As for Kal going bonkers with no one to talk to I guess that he will be in a suspended animation for most of the trip?

First off, don't get me wrong: I love Superman, I'm excited about Singer, I'm digging Routh, and I'm expecting a good movie... What's with the earthquakes? In the first Superman, Lex caused a major earthquake on the west coast. Superman struggled with that. Now, from what I gather, New Krypton will cause catastrophic global earthquakes. I'm assuming Superman will really struggle with that. But does anybody else see a weakness in the writing there? Enough with earthquakes.

Well, when Singer was hired, people here praised him a lot, the X-men movies were awesome and he was a right choice for Superman.... the X-fans were disappointed and concerned.
But after a while, suddenly Bryan Singer was overrated and the X-films were mediocre at best... and on the X-boards people started to say they were glad Singer left, and the third movie would be better with Vaugh/Ratner.
Go figure.
Iceman/Psylocke
02-26-2006, 09:48 AM
I think this is because the standards were raised by the X films & Spiderman/Batman Begins - When X1 came out there weren't as high expectations as there are nowadays
Singer is a very solid director who will produce good films but he is not really great
Also Ratner was an unpopular choice when he came aboard but he has the advantage of being an X-Men fan & that is beginning to show with some of the choices he is making - therefore a lot of fans are slowly changing their mind
What other directors were wanted by Superman fans prior to Singer?

Superman never has been as, well, visually pleasing as other heroes like Spiderman, X-Men, or even Batman. He's always seemed kind bland to me, and photos of him for the movie only cement my theory. And, according to executive produceer Chris Lee:
We're shooting at the Fox Studios Sydney (built with government incentives), the same lot used for the recent Star Wars films and the Matrix Trilogy. Warner Brothers' decision is based on the favorable exchange rate, the Australian government's 12.5 percent rebate on all production expenditures (no cap), and a broad infrastructure of crews, equipment and ample stage space (we're using all seven stages on this lot, each of them at least twice the size of Hawai'i's Diamond Head facility). The early line was that SR uses a 'vague history' of the first two Superman movies. It uses certain elements from that continuity, such as Jonathan Kent being dead. During his recent Wonder-Con appearance, Singer was asked the question directly and responded, "Yeah, basically".
Lex is the only villain for this movie. From what I understand, as a result of his time in prison, Luthor is supposed to be a bit hardened as not as campy as the original movies. I haven't heard anything about super-villains in any proposed sequel, but I would imagine so. I'd like to see Brainiac, Metallo or possibly Darkseid.

I also think that Superman Returns will have a presence in the nominee categories. Cinematography, Art Direction, Wadrobe.

He's not at the Oscars but they did open the show with movies from the past and it showed CR as Superman flying across the screen. It was a great shot.
Yeah, I happened to be watching when they showed that. I saw the Batmobile zoom by, then Spider Man perched on a pole and it was sweet for them to sort of end it with Reeve flying around as Superman. Very great shot.

it has that look that would make it the perfect setting for a "batman TAS" live action movie mixing 1940's with flat screens and laptops. I'd like to see what the batman of that universe looks like maybe it would be the quintessentale

Thats what they are trying to convey. The timeless feel that Mentok is refering to intertwined with modern technology. I think it's going to be perfection.

I really like the look of this film. I really would like to see a modern Superman movie set around the mid 30's to earl 40's borrowing a lot from the early days. But I like how Returns is looking, its definately set with new technology, possibly even futurstic in some points, yet it still feels like it takes place in a past time. I agree that it helps keep that timeless feel.

Yeah, I still don't see how Jimmy and Superman were such good pals, and why Superman liked Lois so much...never really showed that much interaction, enough for me tobelieve they'd be attracted to one another. I think they showed a great interaction between Superman and Lois in the Donner/Lester movies. Lois and Superman flying, Superman going apehouse and turning back time to save her, Superman giving up his powers.

You mean you didn't think she was attractive and why like her when it could be anybody. Basically she was his first connection to Metropolis, so that is probably the reason.
