The only ones I've seen are Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Father Ted, and The Office, all which are great series'. Extras isn't as good as The Office, but it's stll a very funny, quaint and charming series. I've seen a couple episodes of Absolutely Fabulous, and Fawlty Towers. I've never seen Coupling or Men Behaving Badly, which I hear are incredibly funny.

Oh, a friend of mine got me Me and You and Everyone We Know with Alan Partridge, and I thought it was awesome. A new fave.

On a related note, I found this site that has torrents for various British comedy shows. For those that are familiar with the titles, which do you recommend I download?

To Wallcrawl:

Porridge: Stars Ronnie Barker as a prison cell mate. quite an old sitcom but funny never the less.

The Fast Show: It's a sketch show rather than a sitcom but it is HILARIOUS. Just as funny as Little Britain.

The League of Gentleman: Another sketch show but it's just so gruesome, wierd and hilarious.

Father Ted, while hilarious, is Irish and not British and doesn't count.

While the show's subject and creators are Irish, I think there's enough about it that's British to let it slide. Mathews and Linehan did not originally pitch the series to the Irish network RTÉ, but rather offered it directly to Hat Trick Productions and Channel 4 in the UK. Channel 4 is a station that is not officially available in Ireland. All the interior scenes were shot at the LWT studios in London, was paid for and shot by a British broadcaster.

My Hero was really goofy, but fun.

I have a question for British Hypesters: was/is The Vicar of Dibley that popular there? I mean among people who like British TV it is popular here (US), but many other people I know who have seen it don't really like it. I just have trouble imagine a show like that (endearing, provincial) being a commonly popular sitcom popular sitcom in the mid-90s.

I recently watched all of Peep Show and Saxondale, and I thought they were great. Really good fun. I'm looking for more british comedies, and I came across the names of these shows:

Two Pints of lager and a Packet of Crisps
Ideal
Thick of It
Nighty Nights
Monkey Dust
Black Books
Blackpool

I'm not familiar with any of them, so I was hoping a someone could tell me a little more about them, and whether any of them are recommended.

Two pints is run of the mill stuff, it has it's moments but it's nothing spectacular.

I only saw a few episodes of Ideal, but I didn't enjoy it.

Nighty Nights is supposed to be incredibley dark, never got around to watching it but I do remember something along the lines of a woman trying to convince her husband to give up his fight against cancer so she doesn't have to hide her affair anymore.

Monkey Dust is quite good, but weird.

Black Books is supposed to be good, but I never watched it.

Don't know about the others.

The Day Today and Black Books? I'll be looking for them, thanks a bunch.

Any other recommendations you might want to throw in there? I've developed quite the addiction recently. It all started when my friend lent me her Father Ted DVD's last year, and I've been on the hunt for more Britcom ever since.

Whoops, silly me. The Paedophile episode belongs to Brasseye.

The Day Today is a News spoof.
Brasseye is a documentry spoof.

Both of which I would recommend.

I never watched Father Ted myself, just didn't appeal to me.

Could you list the Britcoms you've already seen, don't want to start recommending everything in your collection.

The first season of Father Ted is practically a chore to get through. The second series does get better though, topped by the third which is the best by far. The third series is the one from which I can watch episodes over and over.

So far I've seen:

Red Dwarf (classic)
Fawlty Towers (classic)
Monty Python's Flying Circus (classic)
The Thin Blue Line
Black Adder (classic)
Mr. Bean (undoubtedly some great and to be classic physical comedy)

Absolutely Fabulous (enjoyed what I understood of it, at the time)

Extras (enjoyed it)
Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge (loved it)
I'm Alan Partridge (bit of a let down)
Peep Show (loved it)
The Mitchell and Webb Situation (parts of it were enjoyable)
Saxondale (enjoyed it a lot)

For mindless fun, try Bottom. It's like a middle aged Young Ones, more violence less weird goings on.

Classics, head for Porrige or One Foot in the Grave.

Maybe The New Statesman.

Personally I wouldn't try Vicar of Dibley. Didn't deserve the position is got here:

I just downloaded Black Books, and it's pretty good. It stars Dylan Moran (the nerd boyfriend from Shaun of the Dead, the doctor in Tristram Shandy) and Tamsin Greig (Caroline Todd from Green Wing).

Alright then, Mr I-Want-More-Detail.

My picks would have to be:

Red Dwarf
Because I love sci-fi, and the character of Rimmer is just pure neurotic genius. The show is about Dave Lister, the last surviving human aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf, stranded three million years from home with only the demented ships computer, his dead enemy and a creature that evolved from his pet cat for company :)

Fawlty Towers
John Cleese is a legend among Gods, so among other sit coms Fawlty Towers is pretty much next to perfection. All the characters are perfect, and the overreactions of Basil make me smile every time.

Monty Python's Flying Circus
The show that imspired a lot of modern day comedians, taking the idea that jokes don't need punchlines. Without punchlines sillyness just prevailed on and on as the sketches got more and more out of hand. Genius.

Black Adder
A different take on English history. The first series was the weakest, but the rest was pure gold, and for me personally Series 3 was among the greatest six episode run of any comedy.

Spaced
If you don't 'get' Spaced, if you don't 'understand' it, if you don't find it 'funny', you just haven't got a sense of humour. With a billion and one references, six brilliant comedic actors, and some of the best dialogue known to screen, it's a modern day classic. Over modern comedis look up to it and tremble in awe of its mightyness.

Father Ted
Irish Priests. Irish CATHOLIC Priests. Before Ardal O'Hanlon went off and lost his ability to be funny with 'My Hero', there was his interpretation of Father Dougal. With some of the most stupid and brilliantly frivolous comedy in years, it's another of the all time classics. Not trying to be as clever as Spaced, it's just simple old fashioned comedy done at it's best. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardal_O%27Hanlon)

Mighty Boosh
Welcome to the insanity that is the Mighty Boosh. Vince Noir and Howard Moon take us on a trip littered with the sea hermit Old Greg, the cockney ***** called the Hitcher, and we meet a french tit called Milky Joe (who is in fact, a coconut). Doesn't make sense, poor quality of sets, but... it's genius. It's amazing. Banter between the two leads is what makes this show, watch it. NOW.

The Young Ones
A show about not growing up. Well, sort of. Anarchy in the UK, this is the Clash if they weren't a band bu were in fact a TV series. It combines political humour with slap stick impact, not to mention Cliff Richard :D

Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge
A talk show where all of the guests are just actors pretending to be guests, while the host is a comedian pretending to be Norwich Cities greatest export. Daft as anything, but hilarious all the same.

I'm Alan Partridge
The series based on Alan Partridge (Norwich Cities greatest export) life, as opposed to his career... because, well, if it were based on his career it would be a very dull program. As daft as the aforementioned 'Knowing Me, Knowing You, With Alan Partridge', its more of a painful experience to watch, in much the samne vain as the Office, it makes you grimace but you have to watch to see what will happen next.

Only Fools n' Horses
The all time British Classic anout Del Boy Trotter and his family as they live up to the Cockney life style of Wheeler Dealers. You can't really explain why it's funny, it just is. Watch some episodes, and if you don't agree, you don't know funny.

Pheonix Nights
Written by Dave Spikey, Peter Kay and Neil Fitzmaurice it shows us the life of Club Land in the North of England. The Pheonix Club is home to Brian Potter, a handicapped (but constantly insinuated that he can actually walk) man who owns the club and has to deal with the assortment of idiots who work in it.

Max and Paddy on the Road to No Where
A continuation of Pheonix Nights, this show lets us see what happens to the clubs bouncers when they go on a road trip around England. More stand alone episodes than the latter series (which built up series long narratives), it's still as funny, and easier to get into. Classic.

Black Books
Meet Bernard. He is an angry, drunk Irish man. He owns a bookshop. He doesn't like customers, and is constantly asking himself 'why do they come to me to buy books?'. His friend Fran owns a shop across the street, and they might have had sex in the past, but he can't remember... no wait... she remembers and he isn't allowed to. Their lives are normal, well sort of, until Manny comes into their lives, then things get stupid... Bill Bailey is awesome in this, but Dylan Moran is where its at in terms of the laughs. If you like this, watch his stand up, as it's more of less more of this type of humour. Very good.

There! Happy?

My local PBS station has started showing classic Monty Python (not really a sitcom) and Red Dwarf epsiodes on Saturday nights. Geuss what I've been watching????

I'm loving them both.

Red Dwarf is brilliant. personally I think they carried the series on for too long, but when it was at its peak it was one of the best comedies ever.

I do love Red Dwarf but I always prefered the first 2 seasons, I think it felt funnier when they really had nowhere to go so the writers obviously had to spend more time on the jokes.

I love the scene where lister wants Kryton to lie about what the orange is so he's going 'its a oooor...its a oooooor'
Then he tries to insucall Rimmer a smeg head and goes:
Kryton: 'You're a smeeeee...'
Rimmer: 'I'm a smeee...?'
Kryton: 'Yes sir, a complete and utter one'

Ive never actually seen either, but I highly reccomend a book called 'the Vesuvius Club', which was penned by a memeber of the League of Gentlemen, Mark Gatiss.

Yeah the Red Dwarf epsiode I saw last night was "Stasis Leak" where the guys found a portal to the Red Dwarf back when they were originally on it. It just ends up with like 3 different versions of everybody fighting. It was awesome.

The week before it was the episode where they woke up and the had missed four days, and they had to figure out what happened during those four days.

It just gets me that it's so creative with it's plots, and everything ends up fitting together at the end of the episode. Plus, it's rediculously funny.

I've finished all of Black Books and it's great all the way through the end.

Based on recommendations in this thread I've also got the first season of Spaced now and I'm in the process of getting the first season of Green Wing. I can't wait to watch them.

Watching Coupling right now, and it's diabolically awsome. (It's rare for a show to reach it's peak with it's third episode, but they did it here. "Inferno" wins the series.)
