I'm sad to see Invincible and Walking Dead on so few lists :( more of you need to be reading those
Just because people don't list it, doesn't mean they don't read it. I read Invincible, but it wasn't on my list.

Elijya
02-24-2006, 02:15 AM
I just figured anybody who was reading it would probably have it on their list. You really prefer Captain Atom: Armageddon to Invincible?

The Leaguer
02-24-2006, 02:16 AM
God, yes. I prefer CAA to just about everything I read, except those I listed above it.

Elijya
02-24-2006, 02:21 AM
really? huh, hadn't heard anybody say anything about that book, so I just assumed it was so-so at best

The Leaguer
02-24-2006, 02:24 AM
It's mind-blowingly good. The fact that it has to end eventually pains me.

Elijya
02-24-2006, 02:27 AM
why's it so good?

come on Leaguer, pitch it to me (not that I need to be picking up another book). All I know is he's got a new look and he's stuck in the Wildstorm universe

The Leaguer
02-24-2006, 02:35 AM
It's about CA trying to get out of the Wildstorm universe, because a) he wants to return home and b) something, somehow, turned him into a living bomb, and when he goes off, the entire Wildstorm world will be destroyed. As he goes around trying to get back, he meets up all the big-shots of the Wildstorm universe, including Majestic, the WildCATS and the Authority.

The writing is superb, from the dialogue to the characterization to the fights to the very cool ways he uses his powers to the interaction between characters. Although CA ends up fighting everyone he meets, the encounters are still made to be believable, and doesn't reek of the same fight-for-fight's-sake stench that plagues Supergirl. The book also explores the stranger-in-a-strange-land aspect, with Captain Atom shocked and horrified at the drastic difference in the super-hero community between the WU and the DCU, particularly at the fact that the human population in general is terrified of super-heroes. And then there's the fact that Captain Atom hasn't been this badass in decades. All in all, it's cool as Hell.

To top it all off, the art is superb.

Elijya

what issue is it up to? trade planned anytime soon? I'll give the first arc a shot on your say so

The Leaguer
02-24-2006, 02:40 AM
It's a 9-issue mini, issue 5 came out two weeks ago. I'm sure they'll be quick to put out a trade, since the mini is going to be used to kick-start a revitalization of Wildstorm thats going to include a ton of superstar-status creators.

Ok, you gotta be really bored to sit at a computer and run useless stats for your own amusement. Well, it's nearly 6 AM, and I'm bored. So here's the tally's from everyone's responses in this thread so far. It's not 100% accurate because I think some people were only listing their top Marvel books, and some weren't or were including miniseries. Divided it up into several sections (also had to ignore Silver Sables vague vote for just "spidey", and anyone who made a 6th choice of some kind, to make it fair)

Powers-This is a book that mixes so many genres it's not even funny. It's also a book that changes it's own status quo on a routine basis now. Most creator owned books wouldn't want to change the things that made the book a hit in the first place. (Although mainstream comics are more guilty of this.) But Powers has switched directions so many times that what brought someone into the series in the beginning is not why they're reading it now. I can honestly say I have no idea what's going to hapen next in an issue of Powers and that's what makes it the best book on the market.

DD-Speaking of not being afraid to change the status quo. Bendis' run has turned this into Marvels best and most daring book. DD's ID revealed to the world and there was no easy way out. In fact there is no out at all for Murdock. When Bendis and Maleev started this everyone figured that an easy out wouldn't be to far along but Bendis knew that the reality of a hero dealing with this would make for a more interesting and compelling read.

Fables-I'm a sucker for books that are obviously well researched and that make me go out and do research myself. Fables brought back alot of characters I had totally forgotten about and reminded me why these story's and characters have been around forever.

Rex Mundi-Another book that's well researched and forces me to go out and study up on ancient history. This book is the search for the holy grail in the form of a murder mystery. It's fiction that's based on facts. How can you not love that?

Y Last Man-Vaughan took every guys fantasy and turned it into a nightmare. He's also explored so many different aspects of this world without men and taken a realistic look at what the world would be like I have little doubt that this is what actually happen if all the men were killed.

Kind of dismaying that none of those are from the DC universe. Infinite Crisis is wreaking havoc on the monthly comics right now, though. It usually feels like I'm reading pieces of one giant comic book when I read DCU comics these days, so I don't notice individual quality as much anymore, I guess.

Most comic book characters have been emo at some point in their careers. Usually around the '70s, if they were created before then. Then they sucked it up, changed their costumes to black, and started killing people for the '80s. :)

ok, fine. But you're two years older than I am, so we basicly come from the same generation of comics readers (I started reading when I was 9, dunno about you). And I personally prefer Ultimate Spider-Man over Amazing right now, and dfeinitely over at least the past two years.

I am not a spider-Man "nOOb" - so how do you explain that?

Couldn't a person who started reading Spider-Man in the 60's feel that you're a noob for thinking Peter belongs with MJ instead of Gwen?

Maybe it's just a difference of opinion and we should respect that difference and not try to act like those who hold different opinions are inferior?

Okay, I know I'm fairly new to the board, and I apologize if this has been done before, but I was interested in getting a read on what everyone's favorite Marvel titles are and why? Maybe a Top 3-5 list...

Please try to distinguish between favorite all-time because of the general body of work vs. your favorite currently because the current writing/art/characters are so good.

I've been out of comics for a long time, and looking to get back in... so I will use this to help me gauge what people are liking these days. Plus, I'm just interested.

When I got out, I'd say my favorites were:

1. Silver Surfer - loved the beginning of his series leading into the Infinity Gauntlet
2. Amazing Spider-man - it was the tail end of McFarlane's run on the title going into his "Spiderman" title, and there was some great stuff going on.
3. Uncanny X-men - The Fall of the Mutants was starting to lose me, but I really enjoyed this title up until then
4. Avengers - again - this had started to fade a bit on me, but there had been some great arcs - I enjoyed Druid's run as leader and the whole Assault on Olympus Story
5. FF - Once my favorite of all time - still kept up with it, but it was on the way down quickly.

You're right (and Welcome to the Hype), it's been done ton's of times, but it's new to you, so:

1 Daredevil - coming off what many people consider it's best run ever by Bendis/Maleev (my personal favorite is Miller's first run). I personally think the current team of Brubaker/Lark has the potential to be even better than both.

2 Marvel Team Up- I love everything about this title. Continuity, plotting, humor, characterization. Revolving cast, but Kirkman makes it all work. It might not be around much longer, so enjoy it while you can.

3 Captain America- Brubaker's other great title

4 Astonishing X-Men- If you need an x-fix, forget all the other titles and read this one.

5 Exiles - Sort-of x-characters from other realities hopping around and fixing other realities. Another revolving cast, and a revolving reality as well. Think What If? with a constant cast.

6 New Avengers- Pretty controversial, but I love it. Not always executed as well as it could be, but I think the line-up makes sense and reverberates throughout the MU.

As far as your other favorites: FF is pretty good right now, Silver Surfer is being featured in a Miniseries called Annhilation (there are also Nova, Ronan, and Super Skrull titles). I'd say it's up in the air as to how good Amazing and Uncanny are right now. I buy them, but nothing to gush over like the others you mentioned.

In no particular order only considering current ongoings and no minis

Daredevil
Ultimate Spider-man
The Ultimates
New Avengers
Ultimate FF
Astonishing X-men
Marvel Team Up

I would put the thing there as well but it'd make me sad :(

Do a search on Moon Knight, there's a thread or two.

I like it. The art is fantastic. Writing is a little slow, but I think if you're a MK fan, you'll like it.

Here, the tally from the first three pages, which reflects peoples feelings in Febuary

Agreed. I'd highly suggest that if you're not reading this to at least give it a shot, it's a damn good book.
