Mark Wahlberg (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13310#) has signed on to topline and Antoine Fuqua (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13310#) (Training Day) is on board to direct the political thriller (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13310#) Shooter for Paramount Pictures, says The Hollywood (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13310#) Reporter.

Based on Stephen Hunter's novel "Point of Impact," published by Bantam Books in 1993, the story centers on an ace marksman -- living in self-exile in the Arkansas wilderness after causing the death of an innocent person -- who is persuaded by his former associates that they need his help to prevent an assassination. Subsequently double-crossed and framed for the presidential assassination he was trying to prevent, he is forced to go on the run while trying to track down the real killer and discover the truth about who betrayed him.

Jonathan Lemkin wrote the screenplay (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13310#). The studio is eyeing a June start date for the di Bonaventura Pictures production. Lorenzo di Bonaventura previously produced the Wahlberg-starrer Four Brothers.

Fuqua was attached to direct By Any Means Necessary, another di Bonaventura-produced thriller for Paramount. That project appears to be on the back burner now that Shooter has been fast-tracked.

Pena Joins Wahlberg in Shooter

Source: The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/)
April 24, 2006

Michael Pena (Crash (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14221#)) has signed to star opposite Mark Wahlberg (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14221#) in the political thriller (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14221#) Shooter, reports The Hollywood (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14221#) Reporter.

Wahlberg plays an ace marksman who is framed for a presidential assassination he was trying to prevent. He is forced to go on the run while trying to track down the real killer and find out who betrayed him. Pena will play the nemesis of Wahlberg's character.

Antoine Fuqua (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14221#) is directing the Paramount project from an adaptation of Stephen Hunter's 1993 novel "Point of Impact." Shooting is scheduled to begin June 19 in Vancouver.

Rhona Mitra Loads Up For Shooters
Joins the Wahlberg thriller
Source: The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/)

Rhona Mitra, who has just finished working on murder mystery Number 23 with Jim Carrey, is stepping into the line of fire.

She’s joining the cast of Antoine Fuqua’s thriller Shooters, which already stars Mark Wahlberg and Crash’s Michael Pena. The plot has Wahlberg’s marksman on the run after he’s framed for a presidential assassination he was trying to stop. One of those hot-footing it after him will be an FBI agent with the Spanish-tastic name of Lourdes, played by Mitra.

i think you'd be better off creating a thread along the lines of "am i the only one who did/didn't like (insert obscure movie no one's talked about in at least 6 years here)"

those seem to be popular this week.

LOL, back on topic, this flick may have some potential if done well. Whenver they start up that G.I. Joe flick, I would suggest Fuqua at the helm, simply for Tears of the Sun and the battle scenes in King Arthur(notably the only good things about that one).

Danny Glover Gunning For The Shooter
Joins the Mark Wahlberg thriller
Source: Variety (http://www.empireonline.com/news/www.variety.com)http://www.empireonline.com/images/image_index/150x180/7800.jpghttp://www.empireonline.com/images/point.gifhttp://www.empireonline.com/images/point.gifDanny Glover, who has been busy acting in movie musical Dreamgirls, will switch soft shoe shuffles for gritty gun action as he joins the Mark Wahlberg thriller The Shooter.

Glover joins a loaded cast that already includes Michael Pena, Rhona Mitra, Kate Mara and Eliza Bennett in a tale of a former CIA marksman (make that Marky marksman) forced back into action to stop his deadliest rival framing him for a presidential assassination attempt.

Antoine Fuqua will roll cameras next month on the film, which is based on Stephen Hunter’s novel Point Of Impact.

Everyone was always so quick to dismiss him for King Arthur, and Training Day as well, but the man does good work. He used to be labeled as just another of those "black hippity hop directors", but that wouldn't be further from the truth. If a studio wants to give this man a DC or Marvel property to helm, I'd be fine with it.

Eyespot Corp. today announced a new partnership with Paramount Pictures that will allow film fans to create their own “movie trailer mash-ups” by mixing the studio’s exclusive film footage using Eyespot.com’s online video editing technology. The announcement marks the first time Paramount has allowed users to play editor and create video mash-ups with its yet-to-be-released films.

Beginning with the upcoming action thriller, Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg, an online contest announced today invites users into the “virtual” editing suite to create a customized trailer for the film by utilizing the simple-to-use editing tools on Eyespot.com – and rewards the creator of the best trailer with an Xbox 360.

“I love the idea of fans using their creativity and talent to interact with my films in unique and innovative ways,” said “Shooter” director Antoine Fuqua. “By allowing people to jump inside the story and use their creativity to interact with the film, mash-ups represent a cool and progressive way to connect with audiences.”

Using Eyespot’s easy-to-use online and mobile applications, fans can create their own videos with upcoming feature titles. Fans can mix the studio’s exclusive film footage and sound track, as well as their own content.

“We invite the community to collaborate in Paramount and Eyespot’s online studio. This is a terrific new place for anyone with an eye for movies and a love for film. With the footage, music and effects provided by Paramount, coupled with our simple-to-use video editing capabilities, users can easily get into the online video mix,” said David Todd, VP of Marketing and Content of Eyespot Corp. “Show us your best work and be judged by your peers.”

Eyespot’s intuitive editing tools, combined with a rich catalogue of user-generated content available to the public, and a growing user-base allow anyone to create their own short film. For the Shooter promotion, Paramount will allow creators to choose from more than 20 exclusive film clips, as well as the official promotional trailer, sound effects, still photos, movie dialogue and music from the movie’s original score. Contestants can also upload personal music, photo, and video clips to mix in with studio content and enhance the already dynamic offering. Once mixed, the users’ short films can be shared via social networks, mobile phones or other online video sites.

“This represents an exciting step towards engaging the online community in a three-dimensional way. We see an untapped opportunity for viral promotion of our film through video mash-up and mobile campaigns leveraging user-generated content,” says Amy Powell, Senior Vice President of Interactive Marketing at Paramount. “It allows users to engage our properties across theatrical, home entertainment, VOD, and television releases. Our partnership with Eyespot, which begins with this Shooter promotion, signals a start to putting some creative control in the users’ hands.”

Throughout the Shooter contest, Eyespot members can watch submitted mash-ups and cast their vote online for the most artistic and creative film. At the completion of the contest, the user with the highest ranking Shooter video will win a prize package including an Xbox 360 Console and three video games: Call of Duty 3, Gears of War and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas. Four runner-ups will receive official Shooter materials autographed by Mark Wahlberg.

When I found out this was based on Point of Impact, I was really excited. I couldn't picture Wahlberg in the role, but the guy's awesome so I was still excited. Then I saw the trailer, and now I'm afraid to watch it. It looks like they've stripped the book of everything great about it and turned it into the clichéd B-action movie version of it. Bleh.

I still haven't seen the 300 film but after that SHOOTER is next on my list of must see films. I really like Wahlberg and was pushing for Downey Jr or Mark to get that role of Tony Stark. I'm happy as hell w/Downey though.

My Review: I've never read the book, hell I've never even heard of it so I damn sure can't compare, all I know is you should go in expecting an expensive B-movie because thats exactly what it is, the lead character's name is Bob Lee Swagger after all.

First what I enjoyed, the action was cool thrilling and violent, I liked the fact that this movie earns it's R rating. I liked just about all of the actors, Walberg is a total badass in this movie and I'd liked to see his character get into a fight with Jason Bourne. The movie was entertaining throughout.

What I didn't enjoy was the awful dialouge that was borning when they had to explain the uninteresting story. The villains were cackling cartoon characters (they really did cackle at the end of the movie) and although the movie hinted at being way over the top at the first part it just went completely rambo near the end. The movie was too busy and the likable female lead wasn't in it enough. A slightly major character seemed to vanish and that was kinda strange, plus the movie was way too...busy switching from this a that on the fly.

Put that all together and what do you get? A very entertaining B-movie that has huge flaws but enough likable actors and good action to pull it up in my eyes. I liked it dispite the fact that it was cheesy as hell...and Mark Walberg is a fox.

Rating: 6.5/10

I just can't tell somebody to spend 6 to 10 dollars on it because it isn't good enough but catch it at the dollar theater and you won't be sorry if you like these kinds of movies.

I could be wrong but I think that it's going to do well, it's a nice crowdpleasing movie and alot Walberg's movies seem to do pretty well. Maybe 20 mil OW and 70 total.

Just got back from a late showing and all I can say is freaking WOW! Hunter you should add a "review poll 1-10" for this thread. Easily a 9+. I knew going in it would be great but it was awesome. Kind of like a retro action flick sort of 80's style with alot of other inspirations thrown in. I'm not going to spoil the story or say anything else but this movie was near perfect entertainment. Now why the hell can't they make a Punisher movie like this??? I really enjoyed the Punisher but hell THIS is how they should do. This kind of scale. Great job all the way around. I'm buying the DVD.

Very good movie, this has sort of a Tarantino feel to it, where they take a dried up genre (80's gun flick) and actually make something out of it

I loved it

Shooter is left-wing trashy cinema... It's an expensive B-Film in many ways(To Quote I See Spidey) that at times takes itself too seriously. I'm sure people who run around screaming about conspiracies and how evil George Bush is will love this film but anyone with half-brain will just laugh or find it completely ridiculous. Undeveloped characters and cartoon villians to accompany it a bogus plot. However, the action is AWESOME, Mark Walhberg is bad ass, and I love the details that it gives about sniper rifles. It's an entertaining movie and the movie does well to take 4 scenes in the movie to soap box it's liberal agenda and outside of that it's just random killing. The ending is completely ridiculous as well to boot. I'd give a 6.5 because it's entertaining, I'd put it in the same boat as 300, entertaining action, cool visuals, and a bad ass main character but the story is pretty shallow.

That is the worst argument I've ever heard... I don't mind movies with messages, I dug Blood Diamond, what not... But it's when the movie get so marred by it, and it tries so blatantly to put it in your face it leads to a riduclous unbelieable plot with 2-Dimentional Cartoon Villains and attrocious dialouge, that it does become a problem...

Fuqa stands on his own merits, he has his own style and tone that is completely different from Zwick

Shooter was great, the dialouge no where near perfect was fine, and Ned Betty was great, Danny Glover was a little odd ball, but he still worked out fine...but Whalberg, fantastic, another fine performance for one of my new favorite actors

I was really hoping they sent him to prision in the end though with a "life is tough sometimes you don't get what you deserve" message, and then we could have Shooter 2, where they offer to get him out if he goes Rambo on the bit in Kuwait or something

Here's a nice little quote

"In this great nation, when the secretary of defense cna go on TV and say the war in Iraq is about freedom, it's not about freedom but the american people don't want hear that" Or how about the whole plot being about oil in Ethiopia... That isn't a heavy handed message?

The action was also badass and crisply shot with Fuqua really making the sniping sequences effective.

Just watched it and really enjoyed it. Bobby Lee Swagger is a bad mother. I really liked the action scenes, and it was good to see some shots of Philly(from right outside there). Sniper stuff is real interesting, and Wahlberg really nails the role of a Exceptional sniper whose life is dedicated to Armed Forces. I really don't understand the problems people had with the story I thought it was done real well. As for the villian, you literaly hate Danny Glover by the end. Some of the kills and shots in the film were awesome..some mentioned above.

All in all I give it 8/10
