i dont know what the pseudo science explanations are behind Cyclops' and Superman's ray beams are but the appearance is the same: they shoot hot red beams from their eyes. Superman has been able to do this power long before Cyclops, i dont see any reason why the VFX cant be done of him.

This is the same complaint people had in 1978 about Reeve and company. If "they looked too young" was a complaint of substance, Chris Reeve would have been ignored without a second thought.

Uh, no. Clark Kent/Superman's introduction to Metropolis in the first Reeve film was meant to take place when the character was about 30 years old. When teenaged Clark - they don't specify his age, but from context we can gather he was not long out of high school - went to the North Pole and the Fortress was built for him, the projection of Jor-El informed him that when they were finished with his learning period, "12 of your Earth years will have passed." At the end of that scene we're shown Chris Reeve in the Supersuit flying past the camera.

Now Reeve was only 24-25 when they shot the film, but the reason that didn't matter is simply because he looked older than a typical 24- or 25-year-old; we easily accepted him as being in the 30-year-old range. Donner could've even made the character a full 10 years older than Reeve, and we still would've bought it; he simply had a very mature look for his age. What's more, Margot Kidder's Lois also appeared to be in the same age-range as Clark, and in fact Kidder was born in 1948, making her 4 years older than Reeve, thus aged 28 when they shot Superman the Movie. So for the sake of argument let's assume Lois was 28 and Supes 30.

The story of Superman II takes place not long after the first film, so for the sake of argument let's tack on 1 year to their ages. Since Superman Returns takes place 5 years later, that makes puts these characters both in the mid-thirties range. Routh and Bosworth simply do not look old enough to fit that storyline. This by itself doesn't make Returns a bad film; in fact, I suspect it will be fantastic. It just means that this particular element throws us for a bit of a loop and we'll have to purposely ignore it. These two would have been perfectly cast, however, in a different story where a young Superman is being introduced to the world.

Personally I would've made that kind of film, but not with a simple retelling of the Smallville years for half the movie, because that would certainly seem like a rehash. Instead I would've immediately introduced Clark to Metropolis, say, with his first day at the Daily Planet. He would make his first public appearance as Supes early on, at about the same point as we'll see Routh as Supes. But when it came time to provide the origin story, I'd do it through flashbacks - say, in being interviewed by Lois, as well as being challenged by Lex or some other villain and, when under pressure, recalling his growing-up years and some values he learned from his parents.

In fact, this kind of story could have been told with most of the scenes from Returns being retained - minus the kid, of course. Lex still could've discovered the crystal that made the Fortress, setting up the Returns plot device of attempting to grow continents. And Marsden still could've appeared as Lois's boyfriend, only in this alternate version we'd see tension as she realizes Supes is the guy for her. Instead of the Returns scenes in Smallville with an older Martha Kent, the flashback scenes could've been substituted.
