y'know, in a summer that gave us iron man, the incredible hulk, hellboy 2, wanted, the dark knight, wall-e, the chronicles of narnia, indiana jones, sex and the city, kung fu panda, get smart, hancock, forgetting sarah marshall, step brothers, pineapple express, the mummy 3, and tropic thunder... all of which have done either very well, or will probably do very well, or at least well enough.... i don't think the the prince of persia would have faired too bad against 3 or 4 blockbusters (what the hell is public enimies?)

I'm glad they've pushed back the movie. I'd rather have them create some really great VFX shots instead of half assed ones.
If Bruckheimer is trying to get the same scope of the POTC movies , this movie will benefit from that delay.

But yeah why the heck must everything open in May nowadays. Dark KNight proved that July is also a good month.

They ought to put this out early in 2010...like around April. I'm sure studios will still be trying to capture that "300 Magic" in 2 years.

Iron Man 2
Thor

Shrek Goes Fourth
Toy Story 3

DC currently has Man of Steel and Jonah Hex slated for 2010 as well.

Depends on what kind of movie :cwink:
There are the obvious exceptions like 300 but the summer movies are usually filled with the big budget spectacle flicks.

The fall season is the season where you mostly see oscar-type movies and winter is obviously more family oriented.

What i have a problem with is that May has somehow turned into this big holy grail month with every studio trying to find release date for their movie.
That's why i mentioned July.

Heck if PoP is like POTC they could even release it in the winter season

If Mortal Kombat was like Blade and showed that video game movies could do business

Yes they've chosen Warrior Within styled trousers but to my knowledge that's were any similarity to Warrior Within stop since the film is based entirely around the Sands of Time story not Warrior Within so there is no Kaileena or Dahaka.

I have to say I am pretty impressed with those shots. The prince of persia were always thrilling adventure games, I hope that thrill will translate well to the big screen.

What I found funny was that in a french movie forum (in allocine.fr), they were complaining about how a white character is portraying a middle east character and I was thinking "damn wasn't it what Hollywood is doing with Jesus and no one complained ?" I KNOW I'm playing the Devil's Advocate (please I hope I'm not starting a stupid argument...) but I just hate when basically the look IS there and people just have to complain about something...

The Price of Persia
Why was Disney's Prince delayed until '10?
by Jim Vejvoda (http://movies.ign.com/email.html)

US, August 12, 2008 - There has been much speculation about why Disney delayed (http://movies.ign.com/articles/895/895693p1.html) their big-screen version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time until 2010, ranging from the studio not wanting to compete with Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (http://movies.ign.com/objects/948/948398.html) (which would have opened a week after PoP in 2009) to fears of a possible Screen Actors Guild strike impacting production.

Now Jim Hill Media (http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2008/08/11/monday-mouse-watch-why-did-disney-push-back-prince-of-persia.aspx) claims there are two other reasons why the Mike Newell-directed game-to-film got bumped to 2010. A source for the site claims that the studio and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously teamed for the franchise, were conscious of the cost of rushing to get special effects done in order to meet a locked-in release date, something they learned on Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.

"We're talking about tens of millions of dollars being spent on overtime, bonuses and incentive payments," JHM's source claims. "[These costs] really cut into the profit margins on those Pirates sequels. Which is why -- just as production was getting underway on Prince of Persia -- Disney & Bruckheimer decided that they couldn't afford to make the same mistake again. This time around, they were going to allow themselves sufficient time to get all of this film's visual effects done at a reasonable price."

JHM also suggests that Disney "wanted more time in order to co-ordinate a company-wide promotional plan. So that every possible platform at Disney (i.e. Disney Consumer Products, Disney Parks & Resorts, ABC, the Disney Channel, ESPN, Disney.com et al) could then be used to leverage this brand."

I guess to some hardcore Persian/Iranian people its the same as Van Damme being cast as Captain America...but I have to ask one question:

Prince of Persia is and was a non-Persian/Iranian franchise whose main business comes from non-Persians..its only natural they will choose a non-Persian for the role.

I say choose your battles wisely, at least it is getting a movie and the actor is getting really into the character. I was one of the biggest doubters of Jake getting into the role...but he's proven it to me he's got what it takes to play the lead role in this movie.

lol @ Van Damme, they probably casted Jake as the prince because they are thinking that is what will draw in a crowd here in the US, by casting an Arabian or Persian, might not draw in alot of people, these casting issues plague just about everything, hell look at Dragonball

I think to be honest POP has a lot of similarities with Aladdin which lies within the realm of Arabian nights.

Don't worry.
You do realize that "1001 nights" was originally a Persian tale right? Because of ignorant westerners it was falsely called "Arabian Nights" and the story were altered hundreds of times.

Firstly it's more like saying John Abraham is casted as Captain America. Secondly, it IS (loosely) based off of Persian history and has many references to Persian Mythology. It has an enormous Persian fan base as well.

So he was saying, if a piece of fiction is created by a white guy and the characters are a different race, it's perfectly fine to cast a white guy because a white guy created it?

I actually have heard people argue that Goku is supposed to be a racist caricature of white people before, so please let's not get started on wether or not he's supposed to be "teh azn" or not. He was an alien in the cartoons, so his earthy race is more or less irrelevant. They could have gotten a Mexican actor to play him for all I care as long as he looks and acts the part.

I agree that Gylenhaal is totally miscast as the prince though. It's usually a bad idea to get the whitest actor in hollywood to play the prince of freaking Persia. I liken his selection to how they would always have white people play Charlie Chan in the '30s. They just can't stand the thought of giving an actor of middle eastern descent a role that isn't a terrorist, it seems.

I wasn't trying to make the Goku thing into a race issue, i was just comparing the instances in casting an actor of one race to play a different race. True, Goku was an alien, but the show itself had alot of asian themes to it, in which the main character was presumed to look asian

lol @ Van Damme, they probably casted Jake as the prince because they are thinking that is what will draw in a crowd here in the US, by casting an Arabian or Persian, might not draw in alot of people, these casting issues plague just about everything, hell look at Dragonball

I agree, they want people to flock to the theatres to watch this movie. And any movie about Ancient Iran is better than how they are portrayed in the media for the past 30 years, am I wrong?

So PRINCE OF PERSIA will do for Arabian Nights movies what PIRATES did for pirate movies...

What is that, exactly?

The only pirate movie I've seen come out, sans the actual POTC films, is that porno.

The PRICE OF PERSIA script is ok. There's going to be some cool action, to be sure, but that and the "Arabian" visuals of this project are about all that it has to offer. It's part PIRATES, and part GLADIATOR (without any of the weight). It's also part INDIANA JONES.

The Prince himself is basically a wisecracking, funloving, happy go lucky, younger version of Jack Sparrow, and that lends itself to some very cool acrobatics, especially once he gets into the "dungeon" areas of the film. It's all very tongue and cheek. Now, if Gyllenhaal can manage to add some comic timing to the slightly hackneyed dialogue the script gives him, this movie could be really funny in places. But it never quite feels "real", or urgent. It's also got a very strange "time travel" plot device which becomes very contrived by the time it does what it's meant to do. Everything wraps up a bit too "neatly", which, frankly, does the game a bad turn, I think.

Oh. And the villain is stupid, and his motivations are shallow. The girl's bound to be hot, though, so that's a plus.

Can you name a Persian with the boxoffice appeal of Jake?
This movie is being marketed as a tentpole with a large budget, outside of the gaming world no one know's what the heck Prince of Persia is yet.
It would be a huge gamble for the studio not to cast a bankable actor.
I understand your point of view but with that thinking some of the greatest roles wouldnt have gone to the best actor simply because of their nationality.
It is acting after all.

I think that's mostly because of the roles he's chosen. Not for lack of interest in him by the general audience. Throw his name out there in a first trailer with him all bulked up, scruffy and dirty with a crap load of action and well, we'll see what happens. Im betting Jake hysteria...though I could very well be wrong. I know that personally from looking at the crew involved Im pretty excited and as someone who has played the games, even more so.
Its a completely different direction for Jake to take on a role like this and Im looking forward to it.
The nationality of the cast means very little to me in a fantasy movie about a Persian prince and magical sands of time.

if pitt can pull off an amazing MLK (yeah i know it's SNL but still i think he works pretty well in both roles). while i do think it would be ideal to have a strong black person to play MLK, if people can make someone look like someone else, and they can act better and do the person/character justice, then it really shouldn't matter where they are from. Bale is british but played an american hero (batman, american psycho, john connors) and hugh jackman can be wolverine, why should it matter.

Both of them could have passed for those roles because their appearances were similar enough to the types they were portraying. Most people wouldn't do a double-take, if they they weren't familiar with the actor's background. Same applies to Bale, because he's a white male that can fit either in a British or U.S. role with no problem.

Jake, on the other hand; will NEVER pass off as a Persian. They can tan him up all they want, it's not gonna do much good. The only way it'll pass is if the audience suspends their disbelief. With us being desensitized to white actors playing minorities in film already, this won't be a problem for the masses.

j/k but they could. Ubisoft Movie Studios all the way

I think the biggest obstacle this movie will have to face is not make the time slowdown and reverse thing look like Bullet Time from the Matrix

Interview with Jerry Bruckheimer

Are you planning on breaking the video game curse with Prince of Persia?
JB: That I can’t predict. I have no idea. I just know we have a really good story and we have a great cast and a brilliant director. I’ve got one of the best cinematographers in the world doing it, so it’s going to look great. I know the acting’s going to be really good. Whether people go see it—your guess is as good as mine.

I spoke with Mike Newell last year when he first signed on. That’s an interesting choice.
JB: Yeah. He’s very talented.

Yes, he is, but it’s an unusual choice for a—
JB: Big adventure. Well, it’s about character, and he understands character, story. That’s the main thing for me. The rest you can figure out.

Character and story is what matters and the rest is icing?
JB: Yes.

Are you contemplating going the route of Dark Knight and Transformers and using IMAX for any of your upcoming movies? I know you’ve mentioned possibly using it for Pirates IV.
JB: We haven’t talked about it, but I’d love the ability to be able to do it.

It seems like it would lend itself well to them. But you haven’t decided.
JB: We’re too far away. Persia doesn’t come out until summer of 2010.

I wasn’t aware you could do that post process, because as I understand it Persia is completed.
JB: Yes, it’s finished. But I think you can do it afterwards. I couldn’t swear by it.
