I finally saw Serenity after becoming a 'Browncoat' one month after the film had gone off the cinema so i never got to see it until it came out on DVD on Monday. Well, i loved it, didnt think it deviated that much from Firefly, which is a good thing IMO. But, i want to see more movies, at least a trilogy of what could possibly be one of the best sci-fi franchises ever.
Ultimate Movie-Man
03-01-2006, 06:42 AM
Yeah, I think everyone wants that, but, unfortuantely it flopped. It made 2 mill under its budget, which was $39 mill. How sad is that?

Well, i know it did ok in the U.S on DVD, not sure about the recent U.K figures though. It will be a tragedy if we dont get another movie.

I was quite shocked that it made so little world wide. Mostly because it was such a well recieved film.
From what I hear, the DVD sales are going well. I doubt it will be enough to warrant another film.
Stranger things have happened though and I would like to see another film or two.

Its such a shame that such a good movie was ignored by so many (including myself, but i did get the DVD). This really deserves to be a well known movie. But if the DVD sales arent groundbreaking, i dont see us getting another one. Which will be a damn shame!!!!!!

this definately needs sequels. i think it has one of the best and most original casts, writers, and stories i've seen in some time.
if i remember correctly, it was really cheap to make, too.
AVEITWITHJAMON

Yeah only $40 million, but it didnt make that back in its cinema run, it may have now on DVD but not enough for them to consider a sequel it seems. Its **** the way it works, Serenity is far more deserving of a sequel than crap like Underworld, AvP, and Fantastic Four.

A lot of people are speculating though that they might make a sequel that could be released just on DVD. It makes sense if you think about it, because as great as the show and the film were, they have only been succesful on DVD. While I would much rather have the series return (I loved the movie, but the series was much better IMO), I would definately take anything I could get from teh Firefly Universe.

I was so thrilled when I watched "Serenity" and I thought it was the PERFECT movie for the series. From reading a lot of the fan sites, it seems that most fans feel the reason for such a low box office is the fact that there were SOOO many advanced viewings. All the hardcore fans saw the movie several times for free before it was released. Thousands of fans saw it multiple times and then went it went nationwide, they only saw it once, if at all.

Some good info on that link Ranger, thanks. I cant see the DVD making enough to warrant a sequel though. Its only just been released in the U.K which has a surprisingly large number of Firefly fans, so we'll see how it does here. But Serenity only made £2.5 million here in the cinema.

There was an interview with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the paper today. Mostly about his new film 'Kinky Boots'.
He did mention that he was happy the DVD sales are so strong. He dosennt know if another film will get made but Joss has told the cast and crew that its (Serenity/Firefly) a series he wont be giving up on any time soon.

I think i would prefer another movie to the series to be honest, i loved the movie, like the series also, but the special effects and budget cant compare. That superb space battle with the Reavers and the Alliance would nevee be done in a series and i would like to see more scene's like that.

A movie just gives someone as talented as Joss to cut-loose a little as they have a lot more things at their disposal, not to mention money, I wonder would Universal greenlight a sequel with the same budget as the first movie.

They had a small interview with Joss Whedon today, in the Metro paper which is given out free on the buses over here. When asked about a Serenity sequel, Joss pretty much said it depends on dvd sales as the box office takings weren't very good. He thinks it's highly unlikely, but never say never.
Damn shame really, a very enjoyable film that could easily turn into a great franchise.

Yea,I would rather see it on the big screen then a tv movie.
AVEITWITHJAMON
03-03-2006, 03:52 AM
It will be a damn DAMN shame if this isnt continued on the big screen, i would settle for a new series, but would the actors come back? They may have moved on to other projects by now and would only have time for other movies, in fact that is a very likely scenario. I would only want a T.V if all the actors from the end of Serenity were to return. But i would prefer another movie, as they are just aloud to do so much more with the story.

You wouldnt have got the action scene's in the movie on T.V, even Joss said he couldnt do the River fights on the t,v show as they wouldnt have time for the 6 months training for Summer. And they would not have had the budget to do the effects for the space battle between the alliance and the reavers.

Plus (Mal) the preacher, in Buffy, got an axe in the balls. (Jayne) in Angel got his neck broke by a good hard punch by Angel. So Joss had fun by killing his Firefly cast on other shows first which is kinda funny.

It was a surprise that Mal didnt kill the Operative, but a very welcome one, Nice to see the bad guy turn good instead of just getting killed. What he saw on Miranda definately changed him. Imagine Mal saw him just after the Haven incident, i'm pretty sure he would have killed him there and then.

Jayne and Wash get the best lines.
Jaynestown is one of my favorite eps. It's just so damn funny and Wash's response is my .sig. That line has become a common saying in my family when someone is excited about something crappy.
If they can't do another movie(s), I'm all for a series.
Sci-Fi Channel, IMO, is spending WAY too much money on mind-numbingly stupida$$ creature features and disaster films (lava in NY City?!), why not bring Firefly on board.

I would of liked to see more action too. The reaver/alliance fight was amazing for the budget they had. You know one of the skeletons on the front of the ship when they disguise themselves as reavers is Book. It’s mentioned in a deleted scene.

so you have to direct 48 films before you can be considered a genius? please. i consider Serenity genius. and whedon. and it makes no difference how many movies hes directed, imho hes a friggin genius.
i (almost) agree. i don't think i'd call him a genius, but he's different enough that he really is amazing. he's a total character director, and gets performances out of his (mostly no name) actors that put oscar winners to shame. on top of this, he directed a movie with a budget of around $60 million (if i'm not mistaken) that looks and feels like it costed 2 or 3 times more than that.
eh, i retract my previous statement... Whedon's a genius. (even if i never liked Buffy)

I dont know why, but i didnt like Mr.Universe in this movie, the actor seemed very annoying to me.
I also would have liked to see more action with Serenity herself as i love the ship.
Oh and UMM, look at how much money and freedom Universal gave Peter Jackson for KK, just because his LOTR trilogy was so successful (deservedly so) and that was at New Line. Sometimes, when a director is on a high, other studio's are willing to take big risks on them.
yeah, but look at how much $$$ they gave Jackson to do LOTR, and what had he done before that to prove he was worth the risk? the Frighteners?
at least Whedon had Buffy and Angel (2 of the most succesful and fan-loved tv shows of the time) and Serenity (with the most loyal, albeit small fan following that i've seen in recent memory)

I think we can all agree on the fact that there is enough of a fan base and following to warrant another project. Joss has made a statement about how much he wants this story out there even more now since Serenity. I think another movie is inevitable.

The whole "loved by fans" thing can be a curse... unfortunately (in more ways than one).
The sad truth is that he needs to become loved by the mass movie audience.... or supposed mainstream. This is the only way to get massive amounts of money thrown at you. Basically because you're guaranteed to make Ungodly amounts in return.

True. The studios already know what kind of $$ it can make from TV, Film and DVDs (and it has not been a lot). This is the only thing that would stop studios looking at it. Maybe one day it will be taken to heart as a whole instead of just a cult fan base.

I saw the title of this thread and got pretty excited. The last I had read, the movie didn't do real well at the Box office and Dvd sales were average at best.
I started reading the thread and then I realized there was a question mark after the "3" in the title... DANGIT!!
How is it that good entertainment is so easily passed over, while crapfests just keep regurgitating like yesterdays bad breakfast?

I have no idea why networks do what they do (apart from $)!! Firefly was not even given a fair chance in the UK. I mean it was aired on the Sci-Fi channel but not in order and they jumbled up the scheduling. I was lucky after it gained a fan base that Sci-Fi produced an all day Firefly run so I could see all the episodes.

The LOTR films only cost $60 million each, thats not much more for each one than Serenity was, but LOTR already had a built in base much larger than the 'Browncoats.'
But a Serenity franchise, with the 14 episodes of back story before it, could make a great saga. I find it hard to believe Serenity may not get a sequel, when in this twisted world we may be getting an Underworld 3!!!!!!

Well, I've heard Joss wants to explore Books past and bring back Jubla Early, the bounty hunter for a sequel. There are many possibilities with this. There is also the possibility of another war, with the Alliance being exposed at the end of Serenity and all. I alos would like the Operative to return at some point, but judging by his dialogue at the end, i doubt it.

Yeah, i've heard their demise in the comics was very unsatisfying. I wonder were all of the Reavers killed in Serenity, there didnt seem to be any of them left at the end.
I'd also like the sequel to start with the crew prospering for once, and i'd like to see River pilot also.

I dont know any sales figures for the U.K but i can tell you that Firefly is extremely popular here. The looks river has in the film are funny. Like when she squints and nods here head at the begining to Zoe to say that guy has a gun. Also when Simon says "Am I...talking to Miranda now?" and she just gives him this "are you serious!" look.

Janye: "Yes!"
Mal: "Well ..... you can't"
Almost the best line.

i'd really like to see sequels to this, but, do you think it's be as good without Wash? or, to a lesser extent, shepard Book?

Both those characters did bring something unique to the table. It's possible we could see them in flash backs. However it could still work with out them I think.

While i would undoubtedly miss both of those characters a lot, they were both great. But, i feel there are many more avenues that any potential sequels can explore. And if anyone could come with something interesting it would be Joss.
I wonder would they add some other characters to replace them.
The Question

Well, with Book, they're going to have to have a story that involves flashbacks to his early life to reveal the secret of Book that was a big part of the series.
LexCorp
03-10-2006, 08:30 AM
Joss did have long plans for the show and I bet he is still trying hard to get his stories out there. I am sure we have not heard the last of Firefly in general.

Yeah i heard that, Joss said he had a good way to bring him back, flashback seems the most logical

my favorite was Jubil Early (that was his name, right?)
he was just funny and sadistic at the same time.

Jubal Early was a fantastic character, i loved him, also Joss said he would like to re-visit him in any sequels which is another reason i want one so bad.
Oh and by the way Lex, The Hand Of Blue guys are dead, they died in between Firefly and Serenity.

I read the basic story of what happened in the comics on Wikipedia, The lawman Lawrence Dobson from the pilot comes back, with one eye missing, and Inara and Book leave, and The Hands Of Blue are incinerated by Serenity's engines.
Thats as best as i can recall but your better reading it yourself.

Man the series and the show both had some freakin awesome moments. Remember the episode "shindig"?
"mercy is the mark of a great man"
*stab*
"I'm a good man"
*stab*
"i'm okay"
LOL!! or in the movie. The line that did it the most for me was said by the operative. Mal: "i dont kill women and children" Operative: "I do"
It was just so shocking and abrupt for him to say it like that. I was just like "oh come on! who says that??"

It looked like a large portion of the reavers fought in that last fight with the alliance and also the alliance appear to of won that fight as they were the last ones standing. I think the alliance would of done a clean up of the remaining reavers now that the secret is out.
