Thanks, but I'm not a pro. Well, not in the traditional sense. I do have an illustration job, but that work doesn't look like this stuff. I have to tone down and keep things simplified and conservative.

True dat. Espically Death.
The Question
03-05-2006, 09:51 PM
Death rocks. I just read the high cost of living. ****ing sweet book. Kind of sad if you put yourself in Sexton's shoes. Oh, and fun fact: In Death's domain, there is a house where she keeps her pet goldfish and her floppy hat collection.

lol, I have no idea who The Endless is, so Batman is more likely. Lately, I haven't had the time to really do personal drawings because of my job, but I'll crank a recent Batman piece sometime soon, or The Endless (I'll google him later).

The Endless are a family: Death, Dream, Desire, Destruction, Delerium, and Despair. They are the physical rulers of their namesakes, older then the Gods and will be there long after the universe ends. Their stories are collected under "The Sandman Library," written by Neil Gailman.

Nah, It was only a four page skit I did for a portfolio to Marvel. Like every other place I've sent to, I've heard no word from them.

For me, Sandman was always very inaccessable because there are so many trades and they are so expensive. I have two jobs now though so I've started collecting the trades, I have 1 and 2.
MadMaximus
03-06-2006, 06:02 PM
Why not?
Is there a law I should've been into it? It never interested me at all. Gailman is a good writer, I've read a couple actual books of his, but the Sandman stuff just never grabbed my interest. Sorry if I've offended you with my lack of interest in it.

A J. Scott Campbell site. One he put up himself but hasn't shown up for months, but us fans that hang there got bored and started doing these little fan art contests, lol. I've only participated in 3 so far. The Electra/Rapheal piece up there was one of the entries.

mmmhm. Ryan Reynolds definatly is the Flash. Stephen Dorf seems a little short to be Gambit though.
cool manip though.
MadMaximus
03-07-2006, 08:06 PM
Just because he's possibly playing The Flash doesn't mean he can't be my dream actor for Gambit, lol.
And Stephen Dorff is both my height (really short) and can't act (I've seen his work as far back as The Gate, lol).
ghost113
03-07-2006, 09:02 PM
no he is playing the flash writers usually get the actor they want to play the main character.
MadMaximus
03-07-2006, 09:08 PM
Well, just because Goyer wants him (and probably will get him) doesn't mean anything's solid yet. Not that he wouldn't make a good one. I could easily see Ryan playing Flash, Gambit, or Deadpool to be honest.

03-08-2006, 11:34 AM
No Blah, I said I did it 10 minutes ago before posting, lol. It was really more like 15 minutes to draw ;)
And Ramore, technically I do have an illustration job, it's just requires me to simplify my stuff more in a cartoonier level, and be far more conservative. I basically draw women with certain jewelry or whatever they ask of me for their catalogs and brochures. It pays well, but work is far and few between so it balances me out to poor again, lol.

Dude, you must not watch LOST, cuz the guy who plays Sawyer on that show would own Gambit six ways from Sunday!
doommachine
03-08-2006, 07:33 PM
He certainly would. If that guy could do a New Orleans french accent Marvel could sue his existence for Gambit-likeness rights.
Anyway, you are absolutely amazing!! Not only is your rendering top notch on the comics end, and realism, but your CONCEPTS OWN!! Wolvie and all those classic horror icons, they had such an influence on my childhood, and probably most of the cats on here.
I'm praying that you have had some art school education, because otherwise I'll just stick to my lame-@$$ day job!!!
Seriously, keep it up, and I'd really like to know what kind of schooling you've had; I'm talkin years, college attended, what area you're staying, and what the market is like there, and what kind of projects you've been working on . . .
He certainly would. If that guy could do a New Orleans french accent Marvel could sue his existence for Gambit-likeness rights.
What sucks is, they actually offered him the role!!! They wrote a cameo into the movie, then took it out, then put in back in just for him, then he declined due to scheduling, and it's out again apparently
This may not be the end of the X-men series I've heard, though . . .

03-08-2006, 07:40 PM
I don't watch lost, but I've seen the guy on the news when talking about him, as well as magazines. He doesn't give me the Gambit vibe. Maybe it's because I'm use to the early 90's version of the character where he was cool, a bit playful, and not so overbearing with the "cool" factor like he's been for the past few years, imo.
I did have art school training, but it didn't help much on my drawing end, it just introduced me to photoshop and oil painting.
I've started drawing as far back as the 2nd grade, highly influenced by the likes of Jim Lee and Berni Wrightson at the time, and Jim still holds a huge influence on me. Other influences have been Campbell, Joe Madureira, Lee Weeks, and Bruce Timm. I went to Northwest College Of Art in Poulsbo, WA, but they didn't really do much for my drawing. Just some design programs and oil painting, like I mentioned. I went for 3 years there and earned my Bachelor's with them.

You can definitely see those artists' influence in your work, which is a stellar compliment. I've been drawing like my whole life, seriously . . . my mother has this baby book when I was 3, and it says "He really likes to color"; I'm not trying to be cocky, but I'm pretty advanced, and I am just dumbfounded by your work.
Do you use any/much reference when doing the comic booky stuff?
Anyway, I hear you on the art school thing; it more teaches you the business end, and design elements, which do help your art in the commercial sense, but don't do much for actual skill development.
I was a design major: Illustration, and I think getting bogged down with all the logistics actually hurt who I was as an artist; too much pressure came w/ the art after that! Ironic.
I wish I would have been a fine arts major instead!!! LOL!
Anyhoo, superior skills, my friend! I'm sure there's unfortunately nothing we can do to stop you at keeping the hope alive :D
According to SHH Vinnie Jones (Cain Marko/Juggernaut) has said he is signed on for 4 and 5.
Who knows? But this is the wrong section to discuss it. :p
hahaha! I was just starting to think that!
Oh, and MadMaximus, I almost forgot . . . don't just go based on Josh Halloway's looks . . . he looks like Gambit, but one day I was watching the show, and was like: "that dude IS Gambit"; he's kind of an ********* on the show, and I think he would just rock as Gambit; he's funny, charismatic, and he really does look like him!
Do yourself a favor and rent the 1st season if you have time . . . the show is NOTHING like you think it is, which I thought was a dramatized version of Survivor; it's very comic-booky in its themes; think X-files meets Robinson Crusoe . . .
MadMaximus
03-08-2006, 08:13 PM
I use some reference. I have a huge assortment of actors and models I'll use sometimes. Have the time, it's really for a particular hair style or shading, but sometimes I'll base a character strait off of someone and I try to draw it that way.
I don't watch too much regular TV anymore, I'm more of a movie guy, and from what you describe, it's exactly what I thought it was, so don't assume that I thought it was dramatized survivor. My initial thoughts was CastAway meets Xfiles actually.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but if you rent the first disc of season 1, I think you'll be pleased . . . the first 2 episodes play just like a movie; I don't watch too much TV either; same way; I'm a movie guy . . . but the real good shows, I try to rent . . . which leads to many hours of marathon-style sessions, unfortunately :)

MadMaximus

Thanks. I prefer my pencils most of the time by them selves too, but to make'em look complete, I got to color. I'm very proud of how the colors came out on the Robotech piece, and not so much with the colors of some of the other digitally colored material. Plus, I've only been coloring my work on the computer for 3 years, whereas I've been drawing since I was 8.

One has me do illustrations featuring women sporting the company's jewelry. It's a really toned down drawing style I do for them, more similar to Shane Glines or Bruce Timm styling than my Jim Lee/Joe Mad look. It's what they want. *shrugs*
The other, I do custom design work for business cards, flyers, brochures, pamplets, basically anything printable, lol. It's pretty cool, but it took a LONG time before I got to this point. You just have to be really patient when looking for art-related jobs.

Wandering eye deely? Are you refering to the left eye that I just plum forgot to fill in where it's hidden by her hair, lol? What do you mean by that question? The stuff I do for that company is very simplified almost Bruce Timm/Shane Glines style compaired to what I normally do. I hope that answers, lol.
It depends on what I'm working on. Usually, I'll have some sort of reference photo to work from, like on the past two sketches I posted (which are apparently getting critiqued dispite the fact they're nothing more than sketches done in a half hour's time). On the Robotech image, I used some references from the actual show to get the tech down, but for the most part it was out of my memory. It really just vaires on the subject.

Well, here it is finished. Definatly not something I'd say being amongst my best work. I see a lot of flaws in it, personally. Mostly in the pencils though, and I think that they are due to two things:
1. Time constrant. I needed to stop erasing and just move on even if things don't look right.
2. I really don't draw half as much as I use to, so things aren't going as smoothly.

I actually like the rough a little better. The proportion in the legs works better and looks more natural. Also I like the cropping better where it kind of cuts into Supes, pushing the focus to him. IMO
Your final is still very good and it's got my vote. Perspective is such a pain, and I hate doing it so I tip my hat to you for taking that on and doing it so well.

07-13-2006, 09:26 AM
That's good, real good. I like the colouring on it.
The only crit I have is for Cammy(is that right) Her breast don't look like they are a part of her, more like two balloons stuffed into her shirt. Also the line for her back doesn't look right it just kind of goes up into her armpit. Maybe her left shoulder is a bit high? It just doesn't quite look right.
Overall it's pretty minor stuff and it's great work.
MadMaximus
07-13-2006, 09:35 AM
What line for her back, the underline for the spine? You know the spine curves, right? It's not a stiff pole. And when the body twists and angles itself, the spine does so too?
And the way I drew the breasts are no different than those who drew streetfighter. There are no way Chun Lee's breasts are as big and bulbous as they are, but it wouldn't be Streetfighter without'em. I think you're trying to crit for reality when it isn't suppose to be. THat's like giving a grindcore horror flick a bad review because it focuses on over the top gore.
Sorry, when I went to school, I got trained in defending my work with there's need to be defending.
Mrh7448
07-13-2006, 10:16 AM
Hey I was trying to bash your work, it's good stuff.
I'm not overly familiar with the Street Fighter artwork so if that's the way the breasts are that's the way it is, if that's the way you meant them to be then so be it.
As for the spine I know it curves, I think it's the positioning that looks kind of weird to me. Like her shoulder should be brought in. Again maybe it's a style thing.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i86/mrh7448/cammynvegacoloredsmall.jpg
I'm not trying to bash your work just some constructive crit.
I think your work is pretty exceptional overall.
Sorry didn't mean to be nitpicky...going through school I was used to giving crits and going into detail about what might need improvement or could be improved upon. Again this stuff is very minor and it's a pretty strong piece.
MadMaximus
07-13-2006, 10:22 AM
Oh know, I'm glad you want to critique my stuff. I'm just gonna defend when I don't agree or when something's intentional, and roll with it when I do agree (like Superman's legs, and how Metropolis looks more like Phoenix Arizona, lol).
Why'd you shrink up her shoulder and upper arm? I kinda see where you're going with the back now (I thought you meant the actual spine saying it's going into her armpit), but why make the arm and shoulder smaller than it should? Or was that just loose?
Mrh7448

Yeah it was just a loose thing, to show what I thought it should be like, not used to just drawing with photoshop, it was more just a positioning thing. The proportion is fine.
MadMaximus
07-13-2006, 10:26 AM
Then in that case, I do agree that I could've probably brought the "back line" out a little more.
To be honest, I was mostly worried about her left knee because that's where I struggled the most. So far, not a single person (here, deviant art, other places I go) mentioned it so I guess it's fine, lol.
Mrh7448
07-13-2006, 10:36 AM
Well now that you mention it....
HAHHA...j/k
Nope it's good, still not sure I agree with the breast thing though, but that's my opinion.
If i had done anything like that in school I would have been bashed hard, my core prof. was kind of a die hard feminist so I guess I just became more aware of the way women are portrayed especially in comics/games etc.
ComicChick
07-13-2006, 01:05 PM
see, that's the was to handle things guys. one gave a critique, and the artist said his piece on it and instead of it getting blown out of proportion and becoming an insult or screaming fest, they discussed it back and forth and handled it good.
i wish more would do the same.

What line for her back, the underline for the spine? You know the spine curves, right? It's not a stiff pole. And when the body twists and angles itself, the spine does so too?
I think he means the armpit. The latissmus dorsi goes up from the middle of the back, and spreads behind the arm. She seems to be missing the lat. If the line for her back just spread out toward the side a little bit as it met the arm, that would fix it. You've got it correct in the guy. It's a common mistake - my figure drawing teacher last year claimed that the armpit was the hardest thing on the human body to draw. :)
The knee looks fine, btw...but I think her thigh is maybe just a tad too bulbous. ;) I have no idea how one would go about fixing this (since I've seen the same thing in a Jim Lee piece) but the dude's neck doesn't look like it's connecting where it should. Hmmm.
I love your pencil work! It's got great rhythm and confidence, and I would love love love to see what it would look like with variances in line weight. That would add a whole other layer of dynamicism.

Aww Man, I was actually looking forward to seeing something new from you Mad. Last I heard you were doing some stuff for a Robin project.
Hope all is going well?

Been a good while since I've treaded here, but I haven't been doing much art for months on end now. I've sketched some, and managed one finished piece that didn't have to do with my side job. I haven't even finished that oil painting.
I've tried to work on Robin's project, but couldn't get the time filled in to produce pages for him like I wanted to. I'm not even sure if I want to continue drawing anymore. I'm just not as passionate about it anymore, and I take too long doing it. But, here's one finished piece as an update...and it was still just a doodle

Dude..your art is freaking amazing.
From the Ash vs Everyone pic i managed to pick out: Michael Myers,Leatherface,Hannibal Lecter,Pennywise the Clown,Alien (i think the Queen),Jason,Freddy,Chucky,Pinhead,The dude from the Phantasm films, some Gremlins,The Wolfman and thats it.
Keep up the good work.

Well, I've always dug a watercolory feel to my colors, so I do try to achieve that. I know damn well it's not perfect though, but it's just something I like playing with from time to time.

Here's something I dug up from High School....with no formal training. Of course I look at it now and am disgusted by the ill proportion of the face, but I still feel proud of it for how old I was.

that Wolvie/Jason/Buffy comic strip fascinates me on what might be possible if you made one with Venom against an other horror icon like Michael Myers or Leatherface.
