HEROES
Is NBC's Heroes the Next Lost?
Source: TV Guide (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Ausiello/AusielloReport/)
March 3, 2006
TV Guide's Michael Ausiello has posted a great rundown of NBC's upcoming pilot HEROES, which has says might just be the next LOST! Dave Semel (American Dreams) will direct the pilot about ordinary people who discover they have superpowers:
"I just finished reading a first draft of the script for Heroes, NBC's fall pilot about everyday folks blessed with superpowers, and, well, to answer the question I posed in the title, yes, I believe a new Lost-like phenomenon is about to be born. And here's why:
THE CAST ROCKS: In addition to one of my FFPOTP Greg Grunberg, the ensemble boasts Gilmore guy Milo Ventimiglia and teenage wunderkind Hayden Panettiere. The show's behind-the-scenes pedigree is equally as impressive. Dave Semel, whose credits include directing the American Dreams pilot, has just signed on to helm the Heroes pilot. And while I may not deem Crossing Jordan FauxVo-worthy, I'm suddenly a big fan of its (and Heroes') creator, Tim Kring.
I'M ALREADY OBSESSED WITH THE CHARACTERS: Just as Lost isn't really a show about a haunted island, Heroes isn't a show about crusaders, caped or otherwise. It's about people — albeit ones with extraordinary quirks. "I kind of want to stay away from the superhero aspect," says Kring. "It's about very ordinary people all over the world who literally discover that they have special powers, and it's their dealing with that." The superheroes, er, ordinary people include:
· a 30-year-old male nurse who believes he can fly — and really can.
· a 28-year-old junkie who has the ability to paint images of the future.
· a 33-year-old Las Vegas showgirl who can do incredible things with mirrors.
· a 24-year-old Japanese comic-book geek who literally makes time stand still.
· a 31-year-old inmate who can transport himself through walls and:
· a 17-year-old cheerleader who defies death at every turn (think of Bruce Willis in Unbreakable).
I CAN RELATE: You didn't hear? I, too, was born with unnatural abilities. All kidding aside (wink, wink), as Kring points out, "It's pretty grounded in reality. Part of what makes it really feel very real is that these people's lives should mirror your own; you should be able to see your ordinary life reflected on screen."
IT'S ALL ONE BIG PUZZLE: And you know the deal with puzzles. "It's a big interconnected saga," says Kring. "They're all drawn together towards a destiny of saving the world." And not to OD on the Lost parallels, but Kring adds, "It's extremely serialized."
IT'S SCARY: What would an extremely serialized show about superheroes, er, ordinary people (I have to stop doing that!) be without a creepy antagonist? Heroes' big baddie is described as a "Max Von Sydow-type" whose trademark accessory is a pair of horned rimmed glasses. And although his intentions aren't made crystal clear in the pilot, one thing is certain: He wants to get his hands on some of that super DNA.
ONCE AGAIN, IT SENT A SHIVER DOWN MY SPINE: "It" beingthe final scene. Provided Kring doesn't tinker too much with the script — I can't stress enough that I read an early draft — the climactic sequence, as inevitable as it may seem, will make you stand up and shout, "It's my new Lost!" And the next words out of your mouth better be: "Ausiello was right!"

Well i think that if they actually play up the super hero angle(someone has gotta get a suit) then it wont seem so 4400(especially since people gaining powers isnt exactly new). Whats sad is that this show will probably get more respect for its story and character then smallville or the mercy reef series(just because it wont have to play just to horny teens).
Assassin
03-09-2006, 06:35 PM
Mercy Reef will blow, and if smallville wasnt about superman it would have been cancled 5 seasons ago..its really lame all the time, but i love it because of the name that comes with it.

oh and calling this show like lost is a bad idea, just let be its own show and don't say its like this or that or you will end up shoting yourself in the foot.

4400 Changes Unveiled
Ira Steven Behr, co-creator of USA Network's SF series The 4400, told SCI FI Wire to expect a new direction in the show's upcoming third season that will focus more on the show's mythology and main characters. He added that a new actress will join the regular cast: Megalyn Echikunwoke.
"We are definitely using the last two episodes of last season, 'The Fifth Page' and 'Mommy's Bosses,' as the engine to drive this season," Behr said in an interview. "In other words, last year we kind of alternated kind of big mythology type of episodes ... [with episodes in which] we'd introduce the 4400, they would have a problem that either affected them or affected society in general, and we would deal with that problem. ... What we're going to be focusing on basically this season [is] bigger sweep. I call it playing big ball rather than little ball. ... I think every story this year will have an impact on our people."
In a spoiler for the upcoming season, Behr also said that Echikunwoke would join the cast, playing an adult version of baby Isabelle.
"Isabelle is no longer that cuddly kid you can hold in your arms, which is, I think, probably great for production," Behr said, referring to the difficulty of working with an infant actor. Echikunwoke will be "a very popular addition to the cast," he added. "The character herself, I think, is going to surprise people. I think people have been arguing about or trying to figure out Isabelle at the end of the miniseries, and I think ... a portion of the audience is going to expect a fastball down the middle with her character, and I think they're going to be surprised. It's going to be more of a ride, more of a discovery, and not so clear-cut where you can say, 'She's the angel' [or] 'She's the devil,' you know? And I think that makes for really nice storytelling." The 4400 returns with 13 new episodes, starting June 4. USA Network is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Although Milo Ventimiglia is slated to star in "Heroes" (well, at least the pilot), he is also starring in the WB's "Bedford Diaries". I hope this doesn't mean that "Heroes" may not happen. I am very interested in this show.
Has anyone heard anything else about this superhero show?

HEROES ...Inside scoop (Taken from Wizard #175, May 2006)
The genesis of NBC’s original series “HEROES” can be traced back to one weekend in the life of creator Tim Kring (“Crossing Jordan”).
“I saw Charlie Kaufman’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Incredibles” on two separate days. And this is the love child of those two ideas.,” explained the writer-producer. True to its inspirations, “HEROES” details the real-life complications that arise when legions of people worldwide wake up one morning with superpowers, but don’t expect anyone to be forming into Justice Leagues right off the bat.
“They wake up and discover they have these abilities, but they’re really babies. You know a baby can go ‘Ah,’ but there’s a long way from going ‘Ah’ to talking. So when somebody wakes up and senses that their foot hovered over the floor for a nano-second before it touched the ground, does it mean they know how to fly?” offered Kring.
Ambitious production from start to finish, “HEROES” will involve an ensemble cast living across the continents and involve a large amount of special-effects wizardy, which Kring promises will be “as good-looking as a show can be. This is a big prime-time network thing. We’re spending that kind of money on it.”

Heroes Gains Alias/Lost Producer!
Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com/)
April 21, 2006
Emmy-winning "Alias (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/../news.php?id=4115)" and "Lost" producer Jesse Alexander (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/../news.php?id=4115) has signed a two-year overall deal with NBC Universal Television (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/../news.php?id=4115) Studio, reports Variety.
Coming off a five-year stint on the J.J. Abrams' ABC/Touchstone TV dramas (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/../news.php?id=4115), Alexander was looking for his next project by reading pilot scripts when he came across Tim Kring's teleplay for the two-hour NBC pilot Heroes, about a group of seemingly everyday people who discover they have superpowers.
"The script was fantastic," Alexander said. "I liked Tim's vision of the world he created, and I liked the writing."
If Heroes goes to series, Alexander would serve as co-executive producer.

THIS JUST IN:
NBC 2006 - 07 Primetime Schedule
HEROES at 9-10 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday Nights.
Here is the full description:
The epic drama "HEROES" chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities. As a total eclipse casts it shadow across the globe, viewers follow a genetics professor (Sendhil Ramamurthy, "Blind Guy Driving") in India whose father's disappearance leads him to uncover a secret theory -- there are people with super powers living among us.
A young dreamer (Milo Ventimiglia, "The Bedford Diaries") tries to convince his politician brother (Adrian Pasdar, "Judging Amy") that he can fly.
A high school cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere, "Ice Princess") learns that she is totally indestructible.
A Las Vegas stripper (Ali Larter, "Final Destination"), struggling to make ends meet to support her young son (Noah Gray-Cabey, "My Wife & Kids"), uncovers that her mirror image has a secret.
A prison inmate (Leonard Roberts, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") mysteriously finds himself waking up outside of his cell.
A gifted artist (Santiago Cabrera, "Empire"), whose drug addiction is destroying his life and the relationship with his girlfriend (Tawny Cypress, "Third Watch"), can paint the future.
A down-on-his-luck beat cop (Greg Grunberg, "Alias") can hear people's thoughts, including the secrets of a captured terrorist.
In Japan, a young man (Masi Oka, "Scrubs") develops a way to stop time through sheer will power.
Their ultimate destiny is nothing less than saving the world. "HEROES" is executive produced by creator/writer Tim Kring ("Crossing Jordan), Dennis Hammer ("Crossing Jordan") and David Semel ("House"), who also directed the pilot. The drama is from NBC Universal Television Studio.

Based on the position of the characters in this shot, it seems as if the Ali Larter character and the Leonard Roberts character may have been a couple, and their child is the Noah Gray-Cabey character (who appears to be of mixed heritage).

Hey I have lifted a tractor, and have pushed a car out of a sandy riverbed by myself, will my super strength make it in there? I have also carried things like sleeper sofas and washer and dryers on my shoulder, and have lifted refrigerators into semi trucks by myself. but the one thing I have done is I lifted 1,100 lbs by myself, but that was when I was extremely scared that my father was going to get trapped under the beam! just heard about things like that happening when you get scared, probably would never be able to lift that much again(in fact I'm sure of it), not to mention I now have a bad back because of my stupidity.

y'know what's even more stupid about the title? the fact that the producers keep insisting that "these are ordinary people, not heroes".
anyway, I'll try not to get too hyped about it. the cast doesn't give me a lot of concept and while the premise has potential to make an amazing series, something tells me they'll go for a more obvious route (maybe the obvious idiotic title...) unless of realizing its full potential.

When drama is bad, it's pretty bad, but when drama is good... then it's GREAT.
I don't know, I've always been more interested in the characters themselves then whatever is going on around them. Like Lost for instance. I could care less what is actually on the bloody island. What I care about is the people, and drama usually means character developement. But being that it's a show about superpeople, I don't know. I'll just have to wait and see but seriously now... somebody must have a serious hard-on for Buffy the vampire slayer.

I doubt that, it's already supposed to be a Lost knock-off. And really, I don't see any problem with more superhero shows. Some of them might be fun. :)

Back to Heroes
Did anyone here (besides me) flash to JMS's Rising Stars after reading the blurb?
I know I did - and, not only that, but I thought I recalled JMS once saying he was approached about taking Rising Stars to video (either theater or home).
So I was rather surprised when I found no obvious connection.:xmen:

The NBC page on Heroes mentions an exclusive "graphic novel" around the show - anyone know any more details than that? Is that something coming to book stands, or a digital type thing one accesses online? And is it available? Anything available (forum, podcast, whatever) from the creators?

This show already earns points from me for giving a Joss Whedon alum (Leonard, the guy who played Charles Gunn from Angel) a regular, paying job on television.
Plus, it's rescued the tasty Milo Ventimiglia from the post-Gilmore Girls sex-and-angstfest Bedford Diaries.
From what I gather, it won't all be action scenes using the powers (if there are to be any) but rather the drama of people dealing with powers. Yeah, it's not going to be like Batman or Spider-man, but why should it be? It's trying to be an original concept.
I just hope it's good, and that it lasts. Lost gave us hope that sci-fi shows don't have to flame out in the first two seasons (see: Invasion, Surface, Wolf Lake).

That's actually the guy who was in Buffy ( and Smallville ) who played one of the Commando dudes with Riley, while they were in college. Charles Gunn ( from Angel ) is played by a different actor. Regardless, this looks like a cool show. Let's just hope the network actually keeps a new show like this for once ( assuming it's good ).

Dreading it because the last bunch of sci-fi themed shows (Surface, Invasion, Threshold) tanked.

But I could be wrong.

But I could be wrong. That could actually be cool. But it seems to be that there is a reason most of the characters develop their powers at the same time (something to do with an eclipse).
Anyway - have you guys seen the new site for Heroes? Lots of behind the scenes footage and character description!

What I don´t wanna hear is "this and that character is a rip-off of this and that superhero", that´s not the point, it´s not about creating new comic book superheroes, it´s about showing people with extraordinary abilities in a realistic manner, without costumes, fights on rooftops, etc. It´s basically Unbreakable meets Lost.

I don't think so. I just hope it doesn't go all cheesy and depressing and sticks some Buffy-style humour in.

Hmmm, one of the things I keep seeing in reviews, which I think is a mistake, is constant comparisons with Lost. It should be allowed to be its own show with its own merits.
For instance, some were expecting a big blockbuster-like opening like the plane crash thing in Lost. That made that pilot unbelievably expensive, it was an almost insane bet that luckily paid off. The network producer got even fired for greenlighting it.

seriously, one of my main peeves with the show is the very title.
the show is CLEARLY not about that, and the producers themselves have said that the show isn't about superheroes, but about "ordinary people who find themselves in an extraordinary situation", or something like that.
it's just plain stupid.

There will be clearly heroic aspects to the use of the powers. One of the characters is a cop who can read people´s thoughts, which is tremendous advantage for his job.
