I hope Brokeback Mountain doesn't win the best film in this year's Oscars. Alot of people seem to think that's how it's gonna go, and I'd say I'd agree. But you know what? It doesn't deserve it. It's a good movie, but it's not THAT good. It's not great. I liked it, but was also left feeling disappointed.
The film lost it's momentum the first time they came down from the mountain. It just wasn't as interesting after that. The movie focused very little on the relationship of the two main characters. It was more focused on Heith Ledger's character, and his family. And when the two guys did meet up, it wasn't like it was romantic or like they were deeply in love. I didn't "feel the love". The sex scenes too, they weren't passionate enough. Rough sex, "I kinda wanna beat you up but wanna bone you" sex doesn't mean it's passionate. It just seemed to me they wanted to get their nuts off rather than actually make love.
The movie dragged. Especially when they came down off the mountain for the first time. The movie really, REALLY dragged. It was well shot, well acted and everything, but just not a great movie overall.
I think it will win best film simply because of politics.
Crash is a better film and should pick up the Oscar. Actually, maybe Walk The Line should get it. Walk The Line was great.

I hope that Phoenix wins for "Walk the Line".
I can't say that "Brokeback Mountain" should or should not win since I haven't seen it yet. And I AM NOT, nor do I want to sound like, a gay-basher, but I'm tired of a film getting critical acclaim and award nominations simply because it shows homosexuality in a positive light. And it's not just homosexuality, but anything. Racism, the Holocaust, whatever. It seems like if a movie picks an oppressed minority and lifts it up - exploits its trials and tribulations, it's automatically given this gold card of merit and is bestowed as an "important film."
I think it is important to elighten people about the plights of others on this planet. I'm not belittling any group of people. My problem is with how these films are instantly deified (for lack of a better word). I'm sure "Mountain" is a well-made film with superb acting. But I can't help but feel that much of the attention it gets is for its taboo subject matter.
I would like to see the public reaction to a movie about gay man who's in a serious relationship when he finds himself attracted to woman that he falls in love with. The gay lover would be this hateful, oppressive man (usually a role reserved for the narrow-minded heterosexuals) who tries to belittle the title character for this unbelievable change of lifestyle.
I guess "Chasing Amy" sort of covered this ground but the lesbian in that film was not "allowed" to run off with Ben Affleck in the end.
C.F. Kane

I'm watching it right now.
Jon Stewart was dying a bit in the first part of his monologue.

Did Wallace and Gromit really win best animation??
If so, I'm so disappointed. Howl's Moving Castle is such a spectacular movie. Like I said, humor alone shouldn't be enough and isn't enough to make it best animation. If you think about it, this degrades the entire animation medium into something that is only supposed to be funny.
Calvin
03-05-2006, 07:40 PM
Why not? What should have been nominated in it's place??
A lot of other movies. It was a cloyingly simplistic after-school special of a script that does nothing but deal with the most basic and stereotypical themes, all while cribbing Magnolia yet miraculously missing the point of the very thing it was cribbing, using it for pure contrivance instead.
The acting was phenominal though.

Kong won for FX. I can't think of any more deserving film from 2005, or any year, for that matter.
murdock_matt
03-05-2006, 07:42 PM
I don't know. I find the biggest appeal of W&G to be not that it's funny, but that it is such a laborious process, you know it's a project of love and dedication.
kainedamo
03-05-2006, 07:43 PM
And How's Moving Castle wasn't??
It shouldn't be about which was harder to make. Everyone knows that clay animation takes forever. It should be about the merits of the movie!! And as a movie, all that W&G had for it was humor!
murdock_matt
03-05-2006, 07:44 PM
I didn't say that is why it should have won, I just said that's the biggest appeal for me.

I just think it's such a pity. It takes nothing away from the quality of Howl's of course, and the people that love it will still love it. But Oscar recognition would have been great for it. Maybe with another Oscar for team Gibli, the west will finally give these movies just as much recognition as western animation. Japenese animation is so far ahead of the west, and we don't recognise it. Seriously, the movie is better than most live action the west produces.

Man, the Make-Up noms were lacking this year.
As usuall, most of the movies are nothing special...
Did anyone see Kiera Knightly? She's wearing way too much make-up. What in the hell is she hiding, she's so young.

I hope BB wins theirs...
That sucks Star Wars lost to Narnia just a sec ago....
As a once star wars fan with a hint of that left in my username, I'm glad SW didn't win. They've beaten the dead horse with that franchise, and this award was for wardrobe. I hope i'm not the only one who noticed Palpatine looked worse than he did in any previous film. He looked like something from the Sci-fi channel.

You went on about Japan being better than the west and the west refusing to recongise it, which is almost completely untrue since Spirited Away won. Honestly, I can make a post about how claymation isn't appreciated enough that would make a hell of alot more sense

I say that it doesn't get the same recognition because the only place I could watch Howl's Moving Castle when it came out was a student film theatre. None of the big cinemas had it. I'm sure it's the same in alot of towns and cities. The media doesn't do enough to ensure these movies actually get watched. But yeah, Spirited Away getting the Oscar was a great sign of recognition.

Crash was definately a shock, but still deserving!
Ok, lets talk about the idiosyncracies. We know that from every angle they shoved the whole "anti piracy" thing down our throat, as well as encouraging us to see movies in theaters. Going as far as Jake commenting on how bad movies look on portables. I must say though, they are right about some things, when it comes to what the "theater" experience is. We are becoming an individulastic society when regarding the arts...
Another thing. Do you guys get the sneaking suspician Crash was the favorite for a lot of the people at the awards show? A lot of people were talking about equality and discrimination and such all night long.

I still thought it was a shock for most of the people there...Jack Nicholson's face said it all. As for all the talk about equality and discrimination, I think that could apply to half of the movies nominated, not just Crash.
ZeroSuit...nerd.
So Crash won. I never saw it, but I saw Amores Perros. What did any of you think, comparing the films?

I agree, but I went in knowing he wouldn't. With all of the "minority" movies being supported this year like Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Copote, ect, I have a feeling he wouldn't win. Capote, being a gay man deffinantly had it going in. It's too bad though, because I feel that Joaquin had the superior performance. See, it's easy to play a real person when they aren't exactly that famous. But, Joaquin had very little room for interpretation and he channeled the Man in Black flawlessly.

All in all, not a bad night. Jon Stewart wasn't bad, and Ben Stiller was pretty much hilarious. And Tom Hanks got hit on the head with a viola. What's not to like?
BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR
Crash
While I was hoping to see MUNICH take this award, I was glad to see that it wasn't just handed to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. CRASH really was one of the two best films of the year in my mind, and I wasn't really surprised to see it win.
ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING
Ang Lee - Brokeback Mountain
It's hard not to root for Ang Lee, but I thought George Clooney had a real shot.
PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
I haven't seen CAPOTE, but I'm pretty sure this one was well-deserved.
PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line
This one kind of bothered me. Reese was good in WALK THE LINE, but hardly amazing. The role can't have been that much of a stretch for her. Charlize Theron, Felicity Huffman and Judi Dench gave much better performances, and I think the same could be argued for Keira Knightley. I didn't exactly see June Carter in WALK THE LINE, and even if I had, is that supposed to impress us?
PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
George Clooney
Seems to be well-deserved, from what I've seen and heard.
PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Rachel Weisz - The Constant Gardener
Very good choice. She was absolutely fantastic in this film.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana - Brokeback Mountain
Meh.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco - Crash
Again, well-deserved.
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OF THE YEAR
Don't Tell
Joyeux Noel

Sophie Scholl - The Final Days

Not having seen any of these...
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM OF THE YEAR
Howl's Moving Castle
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
Wallace & Gromit - The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Haven't seen HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. But I think claymation has it's charms, and WALLACE AND GROMIT certainly did.
ACHIEVEMENT IN ART DIRECTION
Memoirs of a Geisha
Art Direction: John Myhre
Set Decoration: Gretchen Rau
No argument here.
ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY
Memoirs of a Geisha
Dion Beebe
No argument here, either. Tough choice, though.
ACHIEVEMENT IN COSTUME DESIGN
Memoirs of a Geisha
Colleen Atwood
She definitely deserved this one.
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
March of the Penguins
I thought it would go to ENRON, which had a lot more depth to it than MARCH OF THE PENGUINS did. Still, this was a hell of a film experience.
ACHIEVEMENT IN FILM EDITING
Crash
Hughes Winborne
Another tough choice. And talk about boring speeches.
ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKEUP
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Howard Berger and Tami Lane
Easily deserved this one.
ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES
(ORIGINAL SCORE)
Brokeback Mountain
Gustavo Santaolalla
It's "main theme" seems to have won it this one. Seems to me the Academy just decided John Williams could wait another year or two for another one. :)
ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES
(ORIGINAL SONG)
"It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" - Hustle & Flow
I'm thinking this one one simply because it had the most words. Seriously. :)
ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND MIXING
King Kong
Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Michael Hedges and Hammond Peek
Happy.
ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND EDITING
King Kong
Happy.
ACHIEVEMENT IN VISUAL EFFECTS
King Kong
Joe Letteri, Brian Van’t Hul, Christian Rivers and Richard Taylor
This is one of those "duh" moments.
BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin
Haven't seen any of them.
BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM

BBM was robbed. How can you have two best actor nominations, win best screenplay, win best director, and not win best picture?
It's quite simple. It wasn't the best picture. I mean, it was basically preaching "It's ok to hurt people to fulfill your lust". Is that supposed to be an impressive message? CRASH said far more about intolerance than BROKEBACK said about intolerance. And it was a hell of a lot more relevant.

Civil Rights is still a very liberal agenda. I'm not a homophobe or anything, but for some reason, I'm really glad Brokeback Mountain didn't win. Couple of things to the people who think that it's a liberal thing for these films to win or even get nominated:
1) When I studied Media Stuides the thing we learned was that some of the most influential movies had connatations as to what was going on at the time (In the 50's and 70's when Westerns were the popular genre they had a strong influence on conservative/republican America as through John Wayne films or High Noon which was basically a shot at people who refuse to stand againt communism, James Cagney Gangster movies in the 30's spoke directly to people during the depression. Look at Cagney's character in Public Enemy or Angels with Dirty Faces and tell me they couldnt see a parallel in the character's origin) So although we go to the cinema for escapism its not entirely off base to say that films are anchored in reality or have something there that is relevant to the times (is it any coincidence Spiderman and the enitre superhero genre had a resurgance after 9/11?) So if you combine the fact that these topics are covered n genuinely good storylines its not hard to see Syriana, Brokeback, GNGL and Crash get there just due.
And I dont believe for a second there's a liberal because as I mentioned before we've had pro-american films for decades (Westerns, War epics, action flicks) and its still maintained today when films like the Passion and Narina. Films both awarded and profited. End of the Hollywood isnt Red State or Blue State, it's green: A Business and there is absolutley nothing wrong with that. Art should be able to be sold to the masses and the creators and suppliers should be rewarded through profits.
2) Crash isnt a Civil rights movie. Its a movie that reflects people of all races and how its a problem that's always existed but in a post 9/11 is really obvious, and as much as people say they dont like to be preached on all the film is doing is providing a snapshot of people's mindstate and how actions can alter it. That snapshot is a beautiful and fascinating piece of art. And Civil rights is not just a liberal agenda it's something everyone should be striving for, for people of all backgrounds

As opposed to the rest of the Hollywood scene, who have class up the yin yang. Rappers are just more open about their antics. Everyone else does it behind closed doors, we need to let loose and act excited once in a while. They were the only ones who seemed thrilled about winning.

Fools of themselves? Get off your high horse. Jon Stewart was right they should be excited they were the most genuine exciment. Three 6 have been around for 14 years, started selling CD's out the back of the car while touring themselves. They moved independently (that's what Hustle and Flow was about, how all these Southern Hip Hop acts moved independently and are now for better or worse quality wise made it to where there on radio and video). They were always respect but never got there due not even MTV, BET a Grammy or a Source Award (maybe a Source Award) but damn these dudes just won an Oscar. The most famous award there is, how the **** do you expect them to act
I bet your ass had no problem with Gyweneth balling her eyes out in 99 or when Robeto Bengigi was jumping on seats and runnng up and down the Isle?

I think in the make up award category, there was a guy and a girl...the guy talked for literaly 5 minutes, then as he finished and the girl began to speak, they cut off her mic and started the music.
That being said, I liked Reese's speech. I thought it was really heart felt and sincere. I don't think she expected to beat Felicity Huffman (that was suprising) and was caught a bit off guard so she ranted. I liked Clooney's speech as well.

LOL, it's only buffoonery when we do it. When anyone else does it, it's being ecstatic or eccentric. :p

I was glad Three-Six Mafia won because they deserved it but none the less they made fools of themselves, but then again rappers aren't known for having class. They're musicians who just won top honors in the film industry. I imagine that would incite a reaction.
Besides, that one award probably moved half another quarter million albums for them. I'd be excited too.

The reason it won IMO, wasnt ebcause it was the best song ever but unlike the other ones had a large role in the movie. The other songs were just music playing over scenes. This song was a scene all together. I really wish 3-6 wold sang a piece of Whoop that trick, but im sure Oscar said no.

Man stfu who are you David Stern? They can wear what they want when they perform, all they was wearing was hoodies, T-Shirts and Jeans they werent even that bling. "Is it so hard to look nice?" Yo who the **** dug Mr Rogers corpse out of his grave and put him on a computer? lol. Look at it like this there performers and they regular attire is there stage attire. Besides having grills and chains are part of the Hip Hop South culture, you couldnt exactly come on there and do a song from Hustle and Flow wearing no small jewellery. Let them do what they want
lol@ criticising them when we've seen women dress in nothing but swans and go to the Oscars (Bjork). Dennis Rodman came the to the ****ing Oscars once and you wanna talk about apperance once and a white guy (Mike Eizondo) in a tux and basketball jersey to accept an Oscar (2003). Its a moot point

That's what class is all about, if you're going to an event where that's the standard then you should dress that way, it's not like I'm saying people should dress like this all the time but the oscars is a very formal event, then that's what they should wear. But I could definately see the opposite being said and being true if someone showed up in a tux at a rap event or something, they'd be consider stuffy and stuck up.
I think someone on another board said the group did wear tuxes for the red carpet and whatnot, but changed for their performance.
