Just spent a few weeks catchin up on Gundam. Finished Seed early last week, and Seed Destiny this week. Last anime I watched tho was the first episode of Gundam 00 last night. Seems good, but I can tell it's going to be a more philosophical Gundam than action orientated. Nothing wrong with that tho. I'm not digging the characters other than the sniper tho.

Shingu: Secrets of the Stellar Wars

Plot Summary
"The day after an apparent alien invasion of Tokyo is repelled by a mysterious being, middle schooler Murata Hajime discovers that his small town holds a strange secret when he witnesses transfer student Subaru Muryou fight another student using psychic powers. Since Hajime himself is relatively new to his town, he has been unaware that the leading families have been protecting the earth from alien invasion for centuries by using the ability of "Shingu," and that the current members of the middle school student council are also the chosen guardians of this generation. He also begins to discover that many of the town's residents are in fact intergalactic diplomats. Hajime is drawn futher into this open secret as his friendship with Muryou and the "chosen" teenagers -- especially tomboy Moriyama Nayuta -- deepens and as he begins to discover that he has a role to play in Earth's future."

The site I was watching Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 on skipped on several episodes, and I'm having trouble with torrent trackers for it so for now I'm skipping the original series, hopefully one day I'll finish it. However since then I decided to just switch to the newest Gundam, Gundam 00. It's a LOT better than I expected, the death toll near the end was pretty high. Course now I just found out the next season isn't until October :(. So now I'm caught up on Gundam 00 atleast tho.

Think I'll take this chance to watch another anime for a bit so I don't burn myself out on Gundam series heh.

You won't be disapointed. FMA is one of the few series that stays consitantly good from beginning to end. Of course the end being the movie Conquerors of Shambala (think that's the name) which ties up the series in a satisfying way.

I think the only thing I really disliked about the series were the Elric brothers US voices. Both just came off a bit high pitched and whiny, it's not bad at first but after several episodes it slowly builds up and gets on your nerves.

I have the movie too, so, I can watch the whole thing at my own pace.

FUNIMATION really pimped the hell out of it via box sets. They split it into four, and the film, and with a lot of pointless extras to pad out the price. Does anyone really care about artbooks for every disc? I sure as heck don't. Granted, considering the state of anime sales, them being a "boom and bust" biz with some series selling like gangbusters, and others barely braking even, the complete pimping of the "hot" series is sort of mandatory, and that was before 2007's DVD sales showed a 5% drop across the entire industry.

The English voices are fine, but I've always preferred dubs to subs anyway, at least ones that were at least decent. I kind of like Sonny Strait as Hughes (I think that is his name), because he was also the voice of Lupin the Third for the FUNIMATION dubs of 10 of those films, and he was good in that role (yes, yes, I know he was Krillin, too).

But yeah, so far it is good. Hopefully the ending won't suck. Nothing kills me more than getting invested in a series, only to have an annoying ending. Too many series have this flaw, even classic ones.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST episodes 9-12: Back in "real time" after exploring the brothers' first few years, and they have a rather episodic tone. There still is a goal, and a subplot, and episodes finishing where another began, but there isn't as much urgency, yet. But considering this isn't even the midway point, that is alright.

Episode 10's homages to the Lupin the Third franchise made me smile.

I still like the anime so far. I like the characters and the world they inhabit, and that is 80% of liking a show. I just can't stand hearing the "Rule of Equalivant Exchange" every episode somewhere. The Japanese are supposed to be smarter than us Yanks, yet a lot of their anime is more repetitive than The Three Bears with some line or credo. :p

The only bummer is in the second-to-last FUNimation disc (I have their box sets), they have an unskippable trailer for the FMA movie that of course offers all number of spoilers even if mute is on (such as, well, what happens to Al). Surely this could have been handled better.

Just finished Ergo Proxy.

I really liked it, but there were some very confusing points. I think now I have a grasp on the story minus one or two details concerning Monad and Re-L.

Anyway I recommend it to anyone wanting an anime that has some action, but also requires more thought than your avg anime. It's not quantum physics, or brain surgery, but you do have to pay attention or you'll find yourself scratching your head at the end.

Also has some semi-deep thoughts, are we a product of nature, or our memories? It's got a slight bit of steam punk in it, but it gets past it quick.

Quick plot outline - There has been an environmental disaster. The story starts in a dome where ppl are more or less treated like parts of an assembly line, each cog trying to be a model citizen to keep the dome (and humanity) going smooth. A monster looking being called a Proxy shows up, chaos ensues, and so on. (Don't think I gave any important plot points away there, that's pretty much the premise for the first episode).

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST episodes 48-51, finishing the TV series.

I suppose a few words are in order. I naturally got this series about 1-2 years after it seemed to fade from the mainstream (in favor of NARUTO) but it naturally came highly recommended by anime fandom and friends alike. The box blurbs claim some thought it to be "the best anime of all time". While I disagree with that, it was quite good. The characters, by and large, were good, interesting, or unique, and I especially liked the world of alchemy and the "rules" that it had. This was vital as too often, "magic" seems limitless and thus boring. Knowing what an alchemist can and can't do, and how they can be empowered or not, helped greatly. The dub was pretty good and the animation quality was good, too. The action, when it happened, was usually entertaining; Edward vs. Greed was especially memorable. It was naturally a "quest" kind of series, based around the star characters searching for some arcane object, not unlike many anime stories like DRAGONBALL or ONE PIECE, but quite a bit stemmed from that, including philosophy on life, prejudices, and the prices one pays for chasing unstable dreams or refusing to accept life's tragedies. It also shows how easily the ambitions of others can be manipulated by the wicked. It also had a simple yet deep world in terms of character classes and whatnot. Plus, any series that has simple Western names I can easily recall is cool. I mean, some of the names of BASILISK got to the point where I just labeled people as, "Slug Guy" or "Wall Guy".

Among the star heroes, there wasn't one I really disliked. The Elric Brothers are anime classics and they had a strong and stable supporting cast. Hughes and Armstrong were probably my faves among them (sorry, Mustang fans). The villains were usually effective and I liked how every action had a reaction, choices made at the start effected the end, and the way the story started, in present, flashback, and then present again reminded me of LODOSS WAR but also worked.

For the most part, the 51 episodes were paced that things happened in every episode and nothing felt wasted. Some series, like NARUTO, BLEACH, and the DBZ stuff, naturally waste dozens of episodes, but here they have weight or purpose, even interludes. Only towards the end do some things seem uneven.

The series did have some downsides. The "Equalivant Exchange" mantra was sometimes recited in such heavy handed terms that I felt like I was being lectured by someone's father, y'know, the "money doesn't grow on trees/nothing in life is free/work hard" ethic. It is a staple of Japanese culture but it still was sometimes grating. And in what I call, "The Zabuza Principle", the series would introduce a nasty, violent villain who seeks only to kill our heroes, only to have that character attempt to become sympathetic when it comes time to give them some comuppance. In NARUTO, when Zabuza pulled this card (and wouldn't be the last), I hated it. Imagine if Ivan Drago from ROCKY IV decided to bust out some sob story about being raised by Commie bullies and he had no choice but to kill Creed, and boo-hoo-HOO who cares!? On the plus side, FMA does this with Scar the Ishbalan and it succeeds. Where it fails is with Lust. And with some degree, Wrath. He was simply annoying. I understood Lust more but really didn't feel sorry when she is taken out.

Ed & Al also seemed to need to be rescued by the ally or dues ex machina of the week more often than Harry Potter. For a hulking suit of armor, it seemed anyone could capture or kidnap Al. Still, the two were memorable anime characters and the way the series was able to mingle serious stuff with some very effective comedy is one of it's strengths. If FMA was TOO serious all the time, it would fall flat, but it knows when a comedic interlude is needed. I also liked that despite being armor, Al would act like a younger brother/little kid would.

Probably my biggest criticism is with the end, which is nothing but an unsatisfying anti-climax that is basically a trailer for the movie, which completes the saga. Envy was the most annoying rogue ever and he/she's end was horribly vanilla, and while the stars got to live (and the last twist about where alchemic energy comes from was very effective), it just seemed disappointing and had I not also bought the movie (which I will watch tonight), I'd have been pissed. Nothing annoys me more than really getting into a great series with great characters and the ending poofs out. It is open ended and it works (and you could say the heroes' goal was achieved, kind of), episode 51 may as well end with the credits going, BUY THE MOVIE, SUCKAS! Who says the Japanese can't merchandise?

Still, FMA is a great series with flaws, and not a mediocre series that has moments, which is a big distinction. Bring on the CONQUEROR OF SHAMBALLA!

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST THE MOVIE: THE CONQUEROR OF SHAMBALLA: I stand by what I said; Episode #51 is basically a promo for the film. That said, though, THIS is a proper finale for the FMA saga and feels more complete and satisfying than what the series left us with, and naturally it was deliberate. Some could argue that this movie could have basically been covered with an extra 4-5 episodes of the series, and that is true, but there is something to be said for the theatrical pacing and budget of this thing. I liked watching a complete arc without having to skip past episode breaks and credits.

Aside for a flashback that provides an obligatory pre-title sequence action scene (which has only worked for JAMES BOND movies for 40 years), the movie picks up right where episode #51 left off, even if takes place about 4 years later. Every major character shows up for the story and gets a chance to shine and even the series villains return and are finished off, although they are quickly replaced for the "Threat of the Film". Which is alright because said threat is a power-mad Nazi woman, and you can't go wrong with Nazi's. Seriously, they're the perfect foils. You don't need to bother justifying their actions and they're always great to see destroyed. It isn't everyday you combine anime and Nazi's and it was pretty cool. Ironically, this flick was more historically accurate to pre-WWII German history than some actual Hollywood films.

Also cool is how the movie fleshes out the status quo left from the last few episodes of the series regarding the "two worlds". Without giving a whole lot away, the brothers ended up split between them and their quest is to reunite, but things don't go as planned and once again, they learn that sometimes things are bigger than their own dreams. Due to the nature of there being an alternate universe, even dead characters can make cameos.

The action is pretty good for the most part, although the FMA team simply don't know how to properly finish off a villain; they seem to believe that an audience enjoys seeing a villain die off screen and virtually painlessly, as with Envy. No, I want to see Ed slice into them or Al crush them. The only villain that happened with was Greed, one in which he actually had little beef with compared to the others.

Still, a lot of the action set pieces and wide shots were simply breathtaking. Gluttony just looked...well, words fail.

As usual with FMA, there are some good twists and lines, and an ending that is hardly a perfect Hollywood affair, but it is a satisfying finish for the series that the TV series alone didn't have. At the very least, unlike other franchises, where the movies are often random little adventures with little meaning to the larger story (NARUTO, SAILOR MOON, POKEMON, DBZ, etc), this one was ESSENTIAL and a good bookend to the series.

I also felt like the movie properly ended the series. Hughes was also my favorite supporting character I cried when he died.. something that happens virtually never for an animated story.

Was looking thru an anime website to see which anime to pick up next. ATM I've seen most of the older animes I've wanted to see, so looking for ones that have a nice looking art style (which is why I tried Elfen Lied and Ergo Proxy). Tried out Full Metal Panic. At first I looked at the hero and the mechs and thought, "Dear God...a Gundam Wing clone", I mean the hero could not look/act anymore like Heero. However it seems alright so far, it has a lot more comedy, I think I can tough out 24 or so episodes. Just finished episode 3.

I didn't have that reaction but that event did naturally get me riled. It was tragic, and it was hard picturing the series without Hughes by that point, which by fictional standards likely was what made it inevitable. Hence why I felt Envy was arguably the rogue that stole the show and it is a shame he/she never saw a proper and satisfying comeuppance.

But, again, flaws in a great series still don't alter it from being great.

Naruto Shippuuden movie. Was better than the last few Naruto movies. However Naruto's rasengan near the end could not have looked anymore like a Goku spirit bomb, hands above his head and all. The ending after the credits tho was funny :), won't say as it would spoil, but let's just say Naruto agrees unwittingly to do some baby making heh.

Also since some ppl in the thread asking about good animes mentioned Code Geass, I watched the first sub episode, not bad but weird. I didn't even know it was on CN until I just read that post a few posts up heh.

GUYVER: BIO BOOSTED ARMOR (2005): Episodes #1-4.

A little background; when I was just getting into anime in junior high in the mid 90's, I didn't have a whole lot of money, so I often bought one-shot movies or very short series back then. But my local blockbuster had some out-of-print copies of the first dub of the 90's Guyver series by L.A. HERO (which was better than the dub Manga would do for the series a few years later). As such, GUYVER was one of the first 20 or so anime franchises that I really "got into". Naturally, offering a dark alien armored hero story, I ate it up as a youth, enjoying the over the top action, the music, the gore and the moments. It was like a superhero story merged with dark sci fi anime. Still, as I rewatched it as I aged, I saw the flaws. The animation was dated. And the latter half of the series takes a dip in animation quality, and repeats some themes. It also introduces angles that are not followed up. Just as Sho beats Aptom and accepts his fate as the Guyver, it ends. Weak!

Heck, I even rented L.A. HERO's WAY out of print subbed release of the late 80's GUYVER: OUT OF CONTROL movie that was infamous for the "Lady Guyver 2".

So when I heard that a new anime series of 26 episodes (more than twice the length of the 90's series) & was supposedly closer to the actual manga, was made in Japan in 2005, I was eager for it to be dubbed and released here, and ADV delivered. There's even a story about a devoted internet cosplayer who got to advertise for this series at conventions, and the story is at www.bioweapons.com .

I eagerly awaited ADV's inevitable thinpack box set, but it has been nearly 6 months since the last disc shipped and having a new job has made me less patient about extra money. So I bought the whole shebang, and watching it last night was like revisiting and rediscovering an old friend. Or at least an Ultimate version of an old friend.

First impressions? I like the dark, moody theme song. The animation quality is great and some of the fights are good, if not overloaded with gore like the last series was. The character designs look a little off from the manga (especially Mizuki) but I don't mind. I like that Sho doesn't look and sound as "wussy" as he did in the 90's. And finally, this series isn't too quick to off it's decent villains; Guyver 2 doesn't die immediately, and neither does Zarabuboth. I miss some of the musical tunes from the first series, and L.A.HERO's dub still had better acting quality, but so far this is looking like a first class revamp, and I can't wait to watch the rest.

GUYVER (2005): episodes #5-8. This series is still pretty cool. I know that in keeping with the manga, Mizuki isn't as involved in the beginning as she was in the 90's series, but the downside is that Sho & Tetsuo are giving Ryu & Ken some competition in the "unintentionally homoerotic best friend" category. On the plus side, the animation is great and Guyver II ****ing RULED in this series. Can't wait to watch more.

Naruto Shippuuden...ugh....

I really want to like this series...I liked the original Naruto until the fillers, I liked Shippuuden for a bit. It's just now it's filled with more talk than action, and most of that talk is just rehashed conversations from earlier in the series.

Now todays episode is making me question if I want to keep watching it....it's just the same **** over and over. Again we're at a filler episode where Naruto meets someone who was treated mean for being different. Naruto notices how everyone stares at the new guy. Naruto sympathizes. Thru tough love Naruto pounds the guy everytime he says something selfish. Naruto helps guy over come the odds. Guy finally forms bond with ppl who hated him. Everyone sings Kumbyah while Naruto walks into the sunset with a determined look saying he'll find Sasuke, but that he needs to train harder first....

I'm not trying to be tough on the series, I want to like it again...it's just getting stale again...

GUYVER (2005) episodes #9-16. Really enjoying the hell out of this. It is more faithful to the manga and the complex storyline has room to breathe. Episode 16 all but goes over the material that was (roughly) covered in the 90's series and so from here on out it should be original. The Zoalords kick ass.
