I'm currently watching Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. I'm beginning to hate it with a burning passion. People recommended me the Anime because it's supposed to be funny. This thing is the Movie Groundhog Day in Episodic form. Since Episode 2 events have been repeating because they are stuck in a time loop and I've been suckered into watching every new Episode thinking now they'd move on.
It's been 6 goddamn Episodes so far, starting the same and ending the same, with slight variations of the same events.

Bleach. The filler is even better than I remember. It's pure fighting fan service, Byakuya vs Kenpachi, Ichigo vs Byakuya, every shinigami going all out using their full abilities. This is good use of filler, rather than just being some random half comedy deal like that princess party soccer crap earlier on. Plus, Kenpachi is pure awesome, seeing him own everything in sight was just pure win.
So, just 20 or so episodes of Detective Conan, and 3 of One Piece and I'll be caught up with the current going ones I care about. Not counting movies tho, Istill have all the DC movies, newest Bleach movie, and most of the One Piece movies I haven't watched yet.

Yeah, The movies are always good, the show, eh, Its getting there. They started a series on M.D. and that was good but It was cut. The new series, Galactic Battles episodes are realy good. Yup, I watched 2 of the Pok'emon movies the M.D. episodes and GB series this weekend of Pok'emon.

Sounds like you've been watching the "Endless Eight" arc (yes, there are eight episodes) of season two. Did you ever get to watch the first season? That one is actually pretty damn good. I haven't been able to watch S2 yet, but apparently it gets better after "E8" with the "Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya" arc.

Yeah, I figured that out later. But now I can't bring myself to watch Season 1. I tried to. But because of Season 2 I started to loath Haruhi. Selfish, bossy, loudmouth, alien obsessed freak. Trapping the whole earth in a time-loop because she isn't happy with her summer vacation. :argh:
Who's dumb idea was it anyway, to turn most of Season 2 into repeating Episodes? Who was the genius who thought that'd be a great idea?

Wonder how long Ash's depression will last though. :(
I really hope this battle changes Ash for good throughout the Sinnoh arc. In the sense that he starts implementing strategies as he once did back in the olden days (Kanto, Orange Islands, Johto).
It seems as if he has been getting softer and softer as the series progresses. Just simply relying on his Pokemon based on their friendship. Which is fine as long as you have a smart tactical plan to back it up.

Yeah he is getting kind of weaker as time goes on. They started to make Pikachu better because by now he would be level 100. (A weak level 100 but yet a level 100.) I mean like when Pikachu lost to a Magikarp I wanted to just quit watching.

Yes. As of now he should be 13-14. Years old because he was 10 when the anime started and they announced his age at the beginning some of the series.

I have no idea, but apparently the creator of the original light novels (whose name escapes me) did not like it either. Aya Hirano (Haruhi's Japanese VA) has even apologized for it.
Regarding Haruhi, hopefully . . .
Kyon threatening to punch her in "Sighs" Part 4
. . . will change her a little for the better. She's had her fair share of nice moments, though, but they tend to get overshadowed by her more jerky acts.

Also thought I'd give Dragonball Kai a chance, gotta say it's a huuuge improvement. Cutting out the endless screaming when powering up, clipping out needless dialogue, focusing more on powering thru the story, and cleaning up the audio and visuals was what this series needed a long time ago. I was Dragonball'd out a long time ago, and yet I still am enjoying Kai. I wished the series was like this when I watched it the first time I watched it.
....Not to mention the first time I watched DBZ was on Cartoon Network. Watching it in Japanese with English subs, complete with the blood and injuries (which were DRAWN over in the US release), cussing, sexual innuendo jokes, and no scratchy and annoying Vegeta voices (tho the Japanese Yajurobi is awful), is a breath of fresh air.

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR: THE MOVIE: Once again in the realm of old school. This is the 1986 animated movie, which was dubbed by Streamline way back in 1992-1993 or so. At the time it was one of the biggest anime films that had been dubbed and distributed by an American company besides AKIRA, which Streamline also dubbed and had under print. Some rather notable voice actors all had roles in the Streamline dub, including James Avery, the original voice of The Shredder from the original Ninja Turtles cartoon. Other actors in the dub include Kirk Thorton, Wally Burr, Tom Wyner, Barbara Goodson, Tony Oliver, as well as a character actor like Jeff Corey. Considering this is a movie where someone explodes every 2-5 minutes, that is something.
From what I hear, this film in under 2 hours condenses a good chunk of the manga. In the year "199X" (so is that the year 2000 or 2009?), the earth is destroyed in nuclear war, leaving it a barren wasteland where few plants grow, and the world is dominated by either hulking brutes who slaughter villages for food or sport, or villages made up of non-brutes. Some people (all men) appear capable of growing to up to 10 feet tall and like many anime, martial arts powered by chi powers are capable of all sorts of feats, from psychic healing to destroying mountains with energy beams. This sort of thing would easily become old hat in anime after DRAGON BALL, but in 1986 this was somewhat fresh. This film predated even the first Goku/Vegeta battle by many years. The plot mostly centers on Ken, the "Fist of the North Star", who is betrayed by his friend Shin, the "Fist of the South Star" as well as his two devious brothers, Jaki and Raoh. He is left for dead by Shin and his love, Julia, stolen from him. But, fortunately, being brutalized, thrown off a cliff and then having hunks of cliff rock fall down upon him fail to kill him. Some time later (maybe a year, but it is never really made clear), Ken returns, many times stronger than before and off for vengeance. Along the way he encounters two kid sidekicks, Bat and Lynn, as well as another fighter, Rei. Jaki is pretending to be the Fist of the North Star, Raoh is off trying to take over the world, and Shin is still being a jerk. Along the way are plenty of barbarian thugs who need killin'.
For 1986, the animation is pretty good; it was showing some age in the 90's when Streamline dubbed it, but it has been digitally remastered on DVD by Discotek Media (via their "Eastern Star" line) and looks as good as ever. This title has been out of print ever since Streamline folded, at least in America, so this is the first time in a good decade that this is available. Discotek on the whole has done a solid job; the Japanese track is included for the first time, and there are some character sketches included. They're a small company, reliant on prior dubs from other studios as they really cannot afford to dub anything themselves, but they usually do a solid job with whatever anime they nab the rights to.
This anime film was and still is notable for it's extreme violence. Basically the highest level of martial art in this world is to be able to scream, "YATATATATATATATATATATATATA!" as you strike an enemy about 500 times in a second, until he blows up. Rei shows some variation from this as he can slice people to bits via these weird laser slice moves he does with his fingers, and later on Raoh fights some throwaway warlord who turns himself to steel (Colossus style). The film is 110 minutes long, which is quite long for an anime film (even may modern ones are barely more than 100 minutes), and the level of gore has yet to be matched. There are some themes of philosophy and a tone of trying to rekindle the spark of life in the Earth, but by and large these are trappings for some very brutal action scenes. The Streamline dub is well acted, although the script has been rewritten from the Japanese (at some points heavily). The musical score is rather good, even if sometimes too steeped in the mid 1980's; the song, "Heart of Madness" just screams "80's Japanese hair metal". Still, considering the release is very similar to another 80's post-apocalyptic series, "MAD MAX", it doesn't hurt the feature. I like how the cover makes the logo of the film look like well worn stone letters.
FIST OF THE NORTH STAR has never been a major anime franchise here. MANGA VIDEO dubbed some of the TV series from the 80's but not the entire thing, and it was never transferred to VHS. ADV dubbed some "NEW FIST" OAV's a few years ago, and they're still in print I believe, but I have seen none of these things. When anime was first starting to become a cult thing in the early 90's, it was often the violence/mature tones that attracted buyers, and so for that FIST OF THE NORTH STAR had a place; now it may be seen as a gore-filled relic. I enjoyed it for that as well as nostalgia. At the very least, it delivers on what was promised.

In a Gundam mood again, so picked off two more Gundam's I haven't watched yet, Gundam 0080: War in the pocket, and Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Really liked 83 a lot, better outta the two IMO. Captured more realistic battles, and emphasized strategy over brute force better than most Gundam's. 80 was good as well, definitely a good example that Gundam isn't just beam spamming super robots.
Also watched Gundam F91 last week. It was good, but wasn't paced well. You could tell they meant to fully flesh out the story in a 50 or so episode release, but instead cut it down to a 2 hour movie. Just too much going on in such a short span, and too many unseen characters being introduced like we've watched them for 10+ episodes.
Now just IGLOO, After War X, ZZ, and Victory to go and I'll have seen most of the main Gundam's (barring silly series like that super deformed kids show one).

TWIN SIGNAL: Another "older" title, although not as old as the last few things I have watched and typed about. This is a 3 episode OAV series from 1996, which was dubbed by Anime Works in 2001; that was also the year the manga of it ended. At the time it was probably one of the last new anime titles that was released on VHS; while major studios kept releasing movies onto VHS well into 2006 (and some even in 2007), virtually all anime companies but FUNimation ceased as of about 2002-2003, and dove head first into the DVD era. But, I digress.
It's a quirky series and premise, and part of me enjoys that; but in a way it is also the problem. It's a comedy/action series that might also offer a bit of a deconstruction of the "robot hero" genre, akin to ASTRO BOY or MEGAMAN. Prof. Otoi is a robot scientist, who makes an andriod older brother hero for his grandson (Nobohiku I think) named Signal, but he's made plenty of other robots, such as Pulse. It seems this series needs a "transformation gimmick" akin to RANMA 1/2, and here it is that Signal transforms into a chocolate crazing chibi whenever Nobo sneezes. Odd. Nobo has a sister named Chris, and Dr. Otoi has his own arch-nemesis, who is a bit of a spoof of Dr. Wily as well as other classic anime fiends. This fiend turns Pulse into a killing machine, although he is comically nearsighted. It's a funny little series, but also a bit weird. I nabbed this DVD for $9, and for that it's fine. Nothing that is terribly excellent, but on a lark it's fun.

"Gonna burn some muscle!"
I basically decided to finally upgrade 95% of the "Street Fighter II" based anime that I own from VHS versions that I've owned since high school to DVD's. This gave me a chance to revisit them after several years.
STREET FIGHTER II: THE MOTION PICTURE: Released as an animated movie in Japan in 1994 (the year "SUPER Street Fighter II Turbo" hit arcades, which was the last version of Street Fighter II which included Akuma and "super bars") and dubbed by Manga Video/Sony back in 1994-1995, this feature has the distinction of being the first anime I deliberately watched and owned. I saw a little of VOLTRON as a kid but I was never a big fan of it. This, however, I saw on sale at a local Toy's R Us when it was new, and watched it with three friends from junior high. The mix of "mature" animation, fight storyboarding and recognizable characters made an impression in me that this "Japanese anime" thing was worth tracking more of. The rest is history. Overall I've probably watched this about three dozen times, but it had probably been at least 7-8 years since I watched it the last time.
Now 16 years old, I was amazed by how well this held up today. The animation quality, while it does show age, is still very good for an anime from the mid 90's; you could tell it was a theatrical budget, and that care was taken into displaying the characters. Every character from SUPER STREET FIGHTER II TURBO is shown, even Akuma (albeit in a background, "blink and miss" cameo). At 99 minutes it runs at a fairly brisk clip, although there are some slow scenes in between the action. Considering how many animated OAV's or movies would be made about fighting games, and even two more STREET FIGHTER anime features, this remains one of the best not only in terms of action, but because the plot is actually comprehensible. It mostly is a vehicle to have various characters appear and fight, but later installments would become more complicated or pretentious, such as 1999's "STREET FIGHTER: ALPHA" OAV or, from about 2-3 years ago, "STREET FIGHTER ALPHA: GENERATIONS". Sony/Manga actually shelled out some cash for some then-big metal bands to do the soundtrack for the U.S. dub, such as Alice In Chains and Silverchair. In later years only DRAGON BALL Z movies would warrant such well known bands on the audio.
The plot involves M. Bison and his organization Shadowlaw seeking to kidnap and mind-control "street fighters" into performing various evil acts for the group, usually assassinations of political figures. There's mention of Shadowlaw backing a "Manchurian candidate" for President, but really this is just a reason to feature as many fighters as possible. Shadowlaw employs "monitor cyborgs" to track fighters, which at the time must have reminded viewers of Kano from MORTAL KOMBAT, design wise. Ryu is Bison's latest target, but upon seeing that Ken has virtually the same moves, they settle for the American shotokan fighter. Chun Li from Interpol tries to get the vengeance seeking Guile to work alongside her European based agency, but all but steals the movie with her brutal battle against Vega. The opening battle between Ryu and Sagat is among the highlights, as well as the massive final brawl at the end against Bison & Balrog. Ryu, Ken, Chun Li and Guile are the major characters, although E. Honda and Fei Long have notable appearances. Most of the other characters are there for fight sequences. In the end Bison is defeated (or is he?), Ryu and Ken reaffirm their friendship/rivalry, Guile learns to work with Interpol, and all is well. The 90's metal soundtrack seems a little dated now, but it still gets the blood pumping quite a bit, with the musical score changing to reflect various countries, such as China, America, or India. It's a simple, classic action anime film with recognizable characters. Capcom would even officially "borrow" from the plot of this film in STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 3, circa 1998, when you play as Ryu and have to fight a "brainwashed" Ken before taking on Bison.
The U.S. version has seen 3 versions now. In 1994-1995 when the original VHS version was released, there was a PG-13 version with all of the "Chun Li shower scene" cut as well as a few scenes of bloody violence and toned down language. There was also an "Unrated" version in which those scenes of blood were in, and the dialogue was harsher (even though, ironically, the curse words involved were no worse than usually involved in most live action PG-13 films such as 2000's "X-MEN"), and there were more glimpses of this scene. This was slapped onto a low rent DVD in 1998-1999 and until 2006 that was what you were stuck with if you wanted to watch it in another format (outside of illegal download and, of course, Laserdisc). The 2006 "Ultimate Cut" is basically just the Unrated version only with a full frontal nude scene of Chun Li, which is rather tame compared to some nude scenes in other anime I have seen (FUNimation's "LUPIN THE THIRD: SECRET OF THE TWILIGHT GEMINI" from 2002 far surpasses this film in nude scenes). And even this version supposedly has 3 minutes of footage left from the Japanese master. What exactly was so harsh about this flick!? Manga Video once proudly dubbed VIOLENCE JACK and MAD BULL 34, for heaven's sakes!
The dub does have some cursing that almost feels tacked on; another old Manga Video trait, but the voice cast does a solid job and throughout Manga's Street Fighter anime of the 1990's, the same actors usually reprised their roles from this feature. They include Skip Stellrecht (Ryu), Kirk Thorton (Guile), Lia Sargent (Chun Li), Richard Cansino (Vega), Peter Spellos (Sagat), Debra Rogers (Cammy), Joe Romersa (Balrog), Richard Barnes (Bison's lacky Senoh/Soltar), and especially Tom Wyner as M. Bison. Wyner always kills as Bison, having perfect delivery to his lines, regardless if they are serious, spooky or sometimes borderline funny, and has the ultimate "Bison laugh". Other voice actors of the time involved were Steve Blum and Richard Epcar. All of the aforementioned actors would rerprise their roles in the next anime I watched.
Ken, ironically, is probably the Street Fighter character who, at least U.S. dub wise, has been recast the most. In the motion picture he was played by Eddie Frierson, who didn't reprise the role for later stuff.
It was a pleasant experience finally watching this again; it was like going home. The DVD menu design is inspired by the fighting game and shows some imagination.
Which brings us to...
STREET FIGHTER II V: This is an anime TV series from 1996, two years after the motion picture, done by many of the same people in terms of design and whatnot. The story is meant to serve as a "prequel" to the movie and there are many liberties taken with the histories of the characters compared to what the official Capcom games go with. It lasted one season and 29 episodes, and the amazing thing about that is how many series it had more episodes than. Think about it; OUTLAW STAR, COWBOY BEBOP, BERSERK, TRIGUN, HEAT GUY J, SAMURAI CHAMPLOO, all had 26 episodes. Some series even had less, such as FLCL.
While STREET FIGHTER: THE MOTION PICTURE actually holds up with the passage of time, SFIIV often seems to show more of it's faults every time I see it. Manga Video started dubbing it on VHS (ten volumes) in 1997-1998 and waited until 2003 to release them on DVD. Many of the above mentioned voice actors would reprise their roles from the motion picture, which was rather cool. While I am sure it was more coincidence since Manga during the 90's employed the same troupe of actors, as many studios do, it still seemed to show extra care to allow the same actors to reprise their characters from something they dubbed two years prior. Beyond major stuff like DBZ or NARUTO or Inu Yasha, this was rare, especially for the time.
The biggest problem with STREET FIGHTER II V is likely the animation budget. Despite being a big franchise, for 1996 the animation is hardly the best. In fact, I would argue this series, especially for it's episode count, is one of the most shameless examples of how to use repeat animation I have ever seen. You can almost watch a chart of the animation budget shrink every episode. The result is after a while you start to count how many times you see the same moves, the same motions, the same scenes, over and over and over. By episode 29, as little new animation is used as possible even for the final showdown. The show was so shameless that by the last third of the series, it would show a few minutes of new animation, then repeat the exact same scene, only maybe from the other angle, with new dialogue. And here I thought the 90's SPIDER-MAN series from TMS was notorious for this. It isn't simply "themed moves" like Hurricane Kicks with repeat animation; it's simple attacks, and even reactions to attacks. Every enemy seems to deliver the same series of blows to Ryu or Ken, and they always react the same way, because then you can at least reuse half a scene's old animation. While many series, even nowadays, are notorious for this, especially with close up head-shots of talking scenes, SFIIV takes it to absurd levels. Episodes also take other methods to save animation costs, such as beginning many episodes with the last 2-4 minutes from the previous episode (and occasional use of flashbacks, which NARUTO used to take to absurd levels). One episode even devotes 15 minutes to running clips from prior episodes to "catch you up".
The series has a problem with establishing tone. The first 6-7 episodes are somewhat light in tone; not comedy, but still light hearted, and then by episodes 8-9 Ryu is being chained up in Thailand prisons and beaten with a whip; the series remains dark all the way through. This works in a way, but if you are unprepared for it, it can be jarring. Finally, while Ryu and Ken have always been "close friends" with no end of "ambigiously gay" jokes made at their expense by fans, this show takes that to extreme levels. The "unintentional homoerotica" reaches drinking game levels. While I have no problem with that, it can take me out of a scene when I'm too busy chuckling at how obviously Ryu and Ken want to make out, or sound like they do, but can't. There is one episode where Chun Li almost calls them on it, but beyond that, it's unintentional.
Nearly every character from the prior movie reappears, aside for T. Hawk, Blanka, E.Honda, and Dee Jay. The series naturally focuses on Ryu and Ken as their leads, but Chun Li, Fei Long, Cammy, and Guile have quite a bit of screen time here, too. Naturally, the villain at the end is M. Bison and his Shadowlaw organization. The plot of the series is as 17 year olds, Ryu and Ken reunite after their childhood training phase is over and lament that "official" martial arts tournaments offer them no challenge. When Guile manages to beat both of them in two separate "street fights" (which in their arrogance they all but invite upon themselves), the pair are inspired to travel the world to improve their skills by taking on "true street fighters" that cannot be found in a ring. This quest takes them to Hong Kong (where they meet the 15 year old Li and 17 year old Long), Thailand (where Ryu first meets Sagat while imprisoned falsely), India (where the two recieve some Hadou training from Dhalsiem, voiced by Steve Blum), and finally Spain (where Ken meets and fights Vega). In their travels they end up aiding Chun Li's police chief/Interpol agent father wrap up a crime ring called the Ashura. The Ashura are only the tip of the iceberg that leads to, you guessed it, Shadowlaw and M. Bison himself. The major oddity is that in this series, Ken is a red-head for no explained reason. He is voiced by Jimmy Theodore who naturally gets a lot more time to voice Ken, and does a good job overall.
In terms of character, it does well enough with Ryu and Ken themselves considering they are ciphers of characters. They each are given a few episodes unto themselves, and while Ryu spends them falsy imprisoned and meeting Sagat, Ken starts to come into his own by the end of the series. His fight against Vega all but steals the series, and to reverse things from the movie, he is the one who has to fight a Bison enslaved Ryu. While Ryu spends most of the series mastering his hadou, Ken's learning of it happen almost by obligation. Vega is written and developed as a genuinely creepy serial killer sort of fighter, giving Richard Cansino a lot to work with. Tom Wyner's Bison is, as always, delightfully insane with the best evil laugh in anime. Guile also actually manages to win several fights in this series, including against Zangief in the final act, which as a Guile fan I appreciated.
Bison in this series is a hard villain to peg; for every scene where he is awesomely evil, he also does something almost jaw-droppingly hilarious, and he is one of few villains who can be both intimidating and funny at the same time. Sometimes he is declaring that his Psycho Power comes from his sheer evil contempt for the world; other times he is laughing so hysterically that he falls over in his chair, and then proceeds to destroy it. He often interacts with his henchman Soltar and they have an entertaining dynamic, as only a "Dr. Evil and Number 2" can. Even Sagat is given a rather sympathetic backstory, to the point where it almost seems tragic that he and Ryu will later become enemies. In fact the only major villain who is mishandled is Balrog. Rather than be a nasty boxer, he is merely Bison's mole in Interpol and he gets creamed by Cammy at the end as easily as a civilian. Dhalsiem steals the episodes he is in and is made to be much cooler than simply being a "rubber man". There are moments when the series invents villains when they could have easily just used a fighter from the game. For example, in episode 3, Ryu is fighting in some underground battle-cave type place and ultimately the crime lord running it sics a "monster fighter" at him named Mr. Damned. Why not, say, Blanka? Or someone recognizable? Quite a few missed opportunities there.
The music is distinctive and the actors do their best with some at times cheesy lines. I adored this series when I started watching in it high school, but as I get older, it hasn't aged well nor does it hold up as well as it once did. The series actually does mesh with the world from the motion picture well and the two link up if you only suspend your disbelief that some ten years later, everyone would forget each other. No other fighting game has gotten an anime series this long (FATAL FURY had two OAV's and a movie, while DARKSTALKERS had a 3 OAV series that was underwhelming), aside for VIRTUA FIGHTER, even though only 26 episodes (out of over 30) were ever translated. Still, this series isn't trying to be more than it is and considering it is based on a game of the SNES generation, it still is rather good for the time. It can be fun to laugh at the flaws, but it still brings with it some nostalgia and some (at times) good action when the animation holds up. M. Bison remains one of the coolest fighting game bosses ever, and a terrific villain. The DVD version of this eliminates "intermissions" that occured in the middle of every episode (for commercial break) that existed in the VHS version; they often shattered the flow of episodes and I was glad to see them go. The box also includes a poster that slips out every time you hold the box in any position that isn't 100% vertical or left/horizontal, which is annoying. For about $35 new from Amazon, though, it's not a bad deal.

This past Sunday I was looking for Lucky Star Volume 6 at Best Buy, but to no avail (looks like a job for online shopping!). Fortunately I found the complete collection of AD, which I was always interested in after seeing various clips online featuring that loveable goofball Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga. Pretty promising so far.
Gotta say, I love how they "translated" Osaka's accent in the dub by giving her a southern belle drawl (although I bet those pesky ultra-purists can't stand it :o ). Pretty clever in my opinion :funny: .

SWORD OF THE STRANGER: Not only is this an anime I haven't seen before, but it's relatively new to boot! A shift from my last anime picks. This is a 2007 animated movie produced by BONES (the company behind TV anime such as DARKER THAN BLACK, FULL METAL ALCHEMIST, SOUL EATER, WOLF'S RAIN, SCRAPPED PRINCESS, and others) and directed by Masahiro Ando. It's an original story that won't win any prizes for originality but is worth your time on sheer execution.
The plot is that a young boy named Kotaro is on the run in Japan from some Chinese warriors sent from the Ming empire. They're after his blood for some arcane ritual to create an elixir for eternal life, and they have access to a "medicine" that allows them to never feel pain. These warriors all have their deadly gimmicks and usually out-fight a dozen normal swordsmen, but chief among them is a Westerner, Luo-Long, who craves only combat. With only his dog Tobimaru as company, Kotaro stumbles across a nameless ronin ("No-Name") who he ends up hiring to protect him. Their relationship is grudging at first but by the story's end the two have become good friends. In the meantime, Japanese samurai seek to try to stay one step ahead of their Chinese "guests", and vice versa.
Beyond a few tweaks, this isn't the most unique plot in anime history. One also won't be surprised that when No-Name has seemingly vowed never to use his sword to kill again, that he eventually will have to. In fact once you're about 15-20 minutes into this 102 minute feature, you probably can predict how it will go, and likely not be wrong. That's not important. What makes SWORD OF THE STRANGER worth at least a rental is it's stunning animation and truly superb action sequences. Anyone bored of slowly paced stiff battles from TV budget animation will be delighted at the spectacular high flying duels that take place in this piece. The tale of a "ronin and cub" is hardly rare in anime or manga, but the tale is executed well, hitting on all the proper emotional points. There are enough comedic interludes that the story never feels bleak, yet there is always enough suspense and seriousness to it.
This was distributed in North America in 2008 by Bandai and dubbed by Ocean Group, which means some of the English actors will be familiar to well trained ears. Chief among them are Scott McNeil (the original voice of Piccolo as well as Wolverine from X-MEN EVOLUTION, among other roles) as Luo-Long and Michael Adamthwaite, Colossus from X-MEN EVOLUTION as well as Namor from FANTASTIC FOUR: WGH and Balder from HULK VS. THOR as the lead, No-Name. Ocean Group have usually provided solid dubs for over 15 years, and this feature is no exception. Kotaro himself is played by Aidan Drummond in the English Dub, and it is good for once to hear a male actor voice a young male child; often female VA's get those roles and while some are good, others simply sound like girls with throat infections when they try. The Viz Media dub of NARUTO comes to mind.
The story is quite macho-friendly; the only female characters in the film are relatively minor. There are two female Chinese warriors who have a few lines as well as a Japanese princess, but these are cameo bits at best.
In fact the only dilemma with this feature is the timing. Back in the 90's or even into 2000-2001, it was possible for a single animated movie release to get a lot of fame and publicity. Nowadays, unless the film is by some major studio (like Madhouse) or director (like Miyazaki), it rarely gets any notice. Would NINJA SCROLL be as big as it became if it came out in 2005 instead of 1995? Or GHOST IN THE SHELL? At least in North America, the big anime releases are usually series, which is perhaps why Manga Video, whose stock is mostly OAV's or movies, has seen diminished power. Had this been released even 7-8 years ago, it would have had a chance to become an otaku house-hold name. But in 2008-2009? Most would probably not even give it a glance beyond the title. This is probably due to movies being a draw in the VHS era when every tape cost you $20 for at most 3-4 episodes of material, but in the DVD era an entire 12-26 episode series can be had for $35 at times, so spending $20 for a film on a disc seems less appealing. Part of my theory on why anime sales have fallen in North America while otaku numbers have risen is not only DL'ing, but the fact that DVD's offered otaku's a far better deal than VHS for their dollar if they were willing to be patient, and the companies didn't realize it.
But, I digress. I bought SWORD OF THE STRANGER on a lark for about $19 online and was more than satisfied with my purchase. Is it the NINJA SCROLL for the first decade of the 21st century? No other animated film to mind comes close.

I can't even remember, I am so out of the loop on anime now. it's been years since I've really watched anything. I think the last one I watched some of was Love Hina (kind of goofy and girly but really funny) but one of my favs of all time is Gunsmith Cats.

Yay, Kagura's been promoted to main cast :woot: .
Still surprised how good the english dub is, considering it's from the same company that did that atrocious Sonic OVA dub a little over 10 years back. "STRAAAAAANGE, ISN'T IT!?" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiEwmiPSmto)

You have good taste:woot: The series is an absolute masterpiece and probably one of my favourite anime series of all time
And yes, I ship Mirielle and Kirika together of course.
I still have to get around to watching MADLAX at some point as I've heard it's a kind of spiritual sequel to the series

Yes, it's part of Bee Train's 'Girl's With Guns' trilogy, along with Noir and El Cazador De La Bruja (the latter of which I haven't yet seen, unfortunately).

The last anime franchises that I watched, were all related to Tatsunoko. I got excited about Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and decided it was a good time to reconnect with my childhood. So on my list I have
-Teknoman The Complete Series
-Shin Hurricane Polymar
-Karas The Revelation
-Karas The Prophecy
The last four three are great. As much as I love Teknoman, that franchise saw a lot of recycled scenes and low grade illustrations and animation. It seemed like after the second third episode, the budget went to hell, yet the producers stuck around for forty more episodes anyways.
Polymar and Karas don't have this issue though. They are brief by comparison, but they are consistent in terms of quality. But that has been the end of my anime watching. I haven't been into anime like I was when I was a kid and a teenager. I used to be so into anime. These days...it just isn't as appealing anymore. I still love aniamted movies though. I have been watching all of those DCAU direct-to-video features, faster than Warner Bros can put them out.

I`m watching Death Note episode 4 right now. Extremely clever, writing reminds me a little bit of a John Grisham novel for some reason, lol.
Can anyone recommend other, similar anime that doesn`t involve too much of a fantasy element?

Monster (also known as Naoki Urasawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naoki_Urasawa)'s Monster). An epic crime story sort of in the vein of Shane Steven's By Reason of Insanity.
