I've been watching Guyver: The Bio Boosted Armor.
It was actually kinda funny, I stumbled across it, thinking it was the 1989 series. I noticed the series had more episodes. So I checked it out and realized it was actually a new series, created in 2005. Follows the story more, and the animation is quite a step up from '89.

.... The Live action movie from 1991 is still really bad, though.

Watched a bunch of stuff over the past two weeks.

Some of it more classic stuff produced by some of the same people, CYBER CITY OEDO 808 and DEMON CITY SINJUKU; both good examples of futuristic cyberpunk and mystical demon combat, respectively. The animation still holds up today and while they're both very "macho" stories, still enjoyable. They've been in my collection for about a decade and still are great to watch.

I can't say the same for two titles I rented today, however.

The first is THE WEATHERING CONTINENT, which sounds complicated but it is a minor sword & sorcery story. I say minor because it focuses more on establishing mood and on nice scenery than on action; there is one major fight scene and most of it is off camera. Three D & D types, a swordfighter, a mage who is one of those pretty-men-who-looks-like-a-girl, and a girl who is pretending to be a boy. They come across a wasted village looking for water travelling the desert and end up having to escape not only bandits, but angry ghosts in this mystical tomb. The animation for 1992 still looked pretty good, and the voice acting is decent. It was kind of blah, though, a perfect example of an anime that isn't bad to watch once to kill an hour, but not something that is worth owning. Even for an hour, the plot dragged a bit.

Then there is A.D. POLICE: TO PROTECT AND SERVE, circa 1999. It is 12 episodes but after about 5 I gave up on it out of apathy. It's not bad at all, but it all feels so...average. So average that you have nothing to pull you in. One cop is a reckless loner who silently mourns his dead or injured partners, and his new partner is a confident suave sort of fellow. One is blond, one isn't, can you guess which? They fight maniac robots called BOOMERS and essentially are like a side-series next to BUBBLEGUM CRISIS. You also have your typical chief, gun-toting babe, spunky babe, and tech-guy to even out the squad. In 5 episodes they ran through 'bots of the week and many cop show cliches, all with some TV budget animation that looks pretty lousey some 8 years later. The character models look alright, but once they get moving you can see how cheap it is; there also is some repeated animation, and reuse of the same gunshot/squealing BOOMER sound effects. Sure, with half a series to go for all I know it turned into some mind**** epic like some shows, but I really wasn't feeling it. Ironically, the squad from BLUE SEED had some of the same stereotypes (albeit a good 6 years earlier), but that had a sense of humor about it; this show plays things dead straight and it doesn't work.

THE TOKYO PROJECT: One of those 55 minute or so one-shot flicks from the 90's (1999 to be exact), dubbed by AnimeWorks, which I own on VHS. Now, off the bat, I own this, and it's not very good at all. If you can't buy/rent it for under $5, steer clear. But for that price, it falls into the category of, "so terrible, that it is awesome". It tells the story of some young folks from the Rutz Detective Agency (although in the anime, their van says "Ratz" and they don't define themselves as an agency in the film, just the back cover of the video) stumble onto a missing person/murder mystery that ends up pitting them against some Japanese Military experiment that is essentially a ripoff of ROBOCOP's ED-209; right down to the horrible growling. The "dramatic evil music" that plays when you first see the military base is priceless for it's lack of being subtle; that tune that followed Darth Vader was more quaint. It also has some amusing exchanges between the villain and his main henchman because of how blunt they are:

"What do you mean, you can't find it!?"

"We...can't find it, sir."

Later....

"This can't be happening! It is IMPOSSIBLE!"

"It IS possible, sir! And it is happening!"

Priceless.

The "80's Macho Man who Defies Logic" award goes to Junpei, who can be hospitalized after being caught in an explosion (from a chopper chase down a highway on a motorcycle) and in less than 24 hours can get out of bed, ride to rescue his sister and friend Akira from a robot and actually kill the sucker with a "really cool gun". His pal Akira is a master of all trades; J-Pop Nightclub singer, computer expert, and competant acrobat/martial artist. Even Batman is envious.

Plus, you have to admire the stupidity of villains who spent millions on security features like motion detecting lasers and giant robots, but instead of a fence they just have one guard who tells cops to piss off, easily overcome by a guy on a motorcycle doing 20 MPH.

The voice acting's not good (and a lot of cussing is added for no reason), the animation for '99 is stiff and reaks of a TV Movie budget, but this is some great unintentional humor. Now I remember why I kept it.

BIO HUNTER: One of those 60 minute OAV's that were very popular during the 90's (this was made in 1995, and released/dubbed by URBAN VISION in 1997). URBAN VISION was and still is a small anime dubbing company and back in the day this was one of their top launch titles. The animation is slick and the story is enjoyable, some nice demonic action. There is a bit of fan-service though, including an infamous "tentacle scene". What is it with the Japanese and tentacles, anyway?

TWIN SIGNAL: Three episodes of a series that was obviously cut off due to low ratings in Japan or something and not allowed more episodes, because the intro animation has plenty of characters that never appear or even are hinted of. It was made in 1996 and released by Anime Works (another small company compared to FUNimation, ADV and Genoen) in 2001. It actually marks the near end of the VHS era for me because I clung to VHS to the bitter end because most of my collection was VHS and this was one of the last "new" anime titles to be released on the faded format. Major motion pictures were releasing new titles to VHS still into 2005, but anime companies officially stopped around 2002 or so. Anyway, besides that, this is a quirky series that probably tanked because it was really trying TOO hard to be quirky. How hard? We have a long haired andriod hero named Signal, whose weakness is he turns into a midget chocoholic chibi every time his human adopted brother Nobuhiko sneezes. His prototype andriod brother, Pulse, has razor blades and laser-eyebeams, but is terribly nearsighted and sometimes is reduced to delivering melodramatic dialogue to trees as a result. Throw in a petty robot-making sister, a cranky grandfather scientist and some amusing villains, and you get a show that is amusing and enjoyable for the 3 episodes within, but one can see that it may have easily worn thin if allowed more.

WILD 7: Based on an old time manga (how old? One character is described as "a hippie" as an actual profession), this was a 2 part OAV or TV thing made around 1994 and released by URBAN VISION in '99. The quote from Animerica compared it to PULP FICTION, which is a bit generous. Each part is 50 minutes and was released on 2 VHS tapes, and is one of those titles that was considered unworthy of DVD transfer. It is violent and dark and probably has the stupidest plan to take over Japan from an anime villain, ever. But for what it is, it has plenty of action, motorcycle stunts, decent animation for the time and quirky characters.
