Just about the only anime I seriously watched as of this moment:
1) Saint Seiya (the real old violent version) - ah, childhood memories.
2) Ghost in the Shell (both films and series) - the movies rock and the series are cool, thought I am still only in the 1st season, am looking forward to reading the first manga. Heard there was a Stand Alone Complex manga coming out as well.
3) Boogiepop Phantom - pretty cool but I really need to get my hands on the manga to understand it more.
4) Perfect Blue - not bad. Some elements of this thriller really couldn’t be done as smoothly in live action.
5) Gasaraki - its idea intrigued me at first. Beats all those futuristic giant robot animes. Though haven’t gone far enough into it to have a clear opinion of it yet. With those other animes out there I’m not sure when I’ll get back on this one.
6) Ninja Scroll - enjoyed the movie, pretty nice, but the first few episodes of the series didn’t catch me…don’t know if it is worth buying the other two dvds.
Now, I’ve read the synopsis and seen some trailers, of course, (that’s pretty much why I am interested in them enough to ask the following question) but could any one please tell me what are the following animes really about?

ok, I've only seen Elfen Lied, and only the first 6 episodes I think (of 13) so I don't know how it ends
the series starts with a girl in a straight jacket and a metal helmet encasing her head. She is locked into some sort of containment cage. A guard lies dead at her feet, and another across the room is shaking in terror. We see the keys from the belt of the guard at her feet rise through the air, and unlock the girl from the cage. Obviously she's a telekenetic. She releases herself from all of her bindings, save for the metal helmet, and begins slowly and calmly walking towards escape, completely naked. Other guards begin to arrive to try and stop her, and we're told the girl's power is effective up to two meters. Bullets freeze in the air as they're fired at her, and as she walks by the guards in her way, their heads pop or their hearts explode.
Eventually the girl exits the facility and walks out over a cliff above the ocean. The director of the facility is lying in wait along with a long range sniper, who fires a bullet that hts the girl, blows off her helmet, and sends her into the ocean.
Switch to a sunny sea side town, where a boy is reuniting with his cousin who he hasn't seen in many years. He'll be attending college soon, and has been given the job as caretaker of an unused building that used to be a restauraunt to up keep and live in while he attends classes. As the two walk along the beach, the naked girl steps out onto the shore. But her personality is different from before. She seems as innocent and as clueless as a puppy, and is only able to say the word "myu" (which the boy and girl decide to name her). Benevolently they take her back to their house to take care of her.
The rest of the series deals with who the girl is and where her powers come from, the facility she escaped from trying to retrieve her, and Myu's true, violent personality, Lucy, emerging which always leds to scenes of intense violence. These scenes are juxtaposed next to the relative tranquility and simplicity of the lives of the two cousins who have taken her in.
lots of nudity and blood overall, but a very intriguing series
the opening theme is also very beautiful. Lemme see if I can find it for you

Only know Gunslinger Girls. Let's see if I remember correctly. It's about girls who are about 12 years old, give or take a few years, who are handicapped. They are being taking in by the FBI or another secret service, healed of their handicapps and are being trained for assassination Missions.
So in short, secret service Killer Lolitas.
---
Found a short Plot summary on another side
"Henrietta" was an innocent little girl when her entire family was massacred and she was left for dead. She was rescued by a privately-owned social welfare organization and given cybernetic components over her battered body. Brainwashed by the organization, she and four other girls now work as cold-blooded assassins, doing the dirty work for the Italian government.

Yeah, most of what you said I found out in the trailer at advfilms.com but thanks for the synopsis anyways.
One of the reasons I like anime is because they can be so strange.
I loved Boogiepop Phantom for that.
So, it might take a while for me, do to my finances, but I think I’ll eventually get my hands on Elfen Lied too.
the opening theme is also very beautiful. Lemme see if I can find it for you
Oh yeah, I know, heard it before, very nice one.
Thanks for the opening too. I presume those weren’t just random abstract pictures and they actually tell the story…not that, without seeing the anime itself, I have any possibility to decipher them…

Thank you.
Yeah, heard something like that already too but your explanation gives me a better idea of what role has the organization and what will become of it later on in the series. :venom:
the italian government? that seems random...
Oh, not at all!
From what I researched myself the whole series takes place in Italy. And they even make good use of Italian words…hope that they speak it well too. Me having Italian roots, I find it intriguing.
And that’s another thing I love about anime - they actually do internationalize.

Latest watched anime is Mai-Hime.
Here a short discription.
uka Gakue is a combined school with classes from primary through to senior high. In ***a Gakuen, there is a rumor that a mysterious monster had once appeared, and that the only counter-measures against the monster were girls called "HiME", who possessed the abilities of HiME (Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment).
Mai is a transfer student unaware of this rumor. However, she is suddenly told her that she possesses the power of a HiME. After facing a few problems, she learns to live her life as a HiME.

The Genre is Action, Drama, Mecha. Altough it's not a clear comedy genre it's still quite funny. The action seen so far in the first 2 Episodes is pretty solid.

was it good?
I only saw the first episode, but I loved it. The show has an extremely high production value, with great direction. It's dark, moody and atmospheric, and steeped in style and mystery. The show takes itself pretty seriously, and has an incredibly cinematic feel to it. It seems like it's going to be the kind of series that will have quite a few layers to it; The show opens with a quote from Michelangelo, his repsonse to the poet Giovan Battista Strozzi who commented on his statue in the church of San Lorenzo in Florence, the tomb of “Giuliano di Nemours,” Strozzi said his statues were so beautiful that they could come to life (literally, they could “awake”). But Michelangelo, deeply saddened by the crumbling of the Republic of Florence, replied with the words quoted in the intro of the episode:
«Caro m’è il sonno, e più l’esser di sasso,
«Dear to me is the sleep, and more to be stone
mentre che il danno, e la vergogna dura;
whilst the damage, and the shame endure;
non veder, non sentir, m’è gran ventura;
not to see, not to hear, it’s great venture to me
però non mi destar; deh, parla basso»
but don’t wake me; speak low»
Later on in the series, the actual statue makes an appearance. The ending theme of the series is Radiohead's "Paranoid Android," which is just too awesome for words. If you like Ghost in the Shell, GITS: TAS and Blade Runner, you'll more than likely enjoy the show.
It looks to be an ambitious series.

Last watched, Mai Otome. Here a short summary so you know what it's about.
Otome - they are elite ladies; on oneOtome - they are elite ladies; on one hand, they are guards of important persons such as royal families and presidents, and on the other, they are the brains and advisors of politics. To become Otome is the dream of girls all over the world, and Garderobe is the academy that has introduced numerous Otome into high society.
The main character, Arika Yumemiya, is a 14-year-old girl. She came to Windbloom Kingdom to look for her mother, who used to be a Meister Otome. When she arrived there, she saw Shizuru. Upon seeing her graceful manner, she made up her mind to become Otome. However, in order to become Otome, she has to graduate with honors from Garderobe.
* This is a spin-off of Mai HiME. Although the characters bear a resemblance to those in the first series, this is a completely different and unrelated story.

I actually have a rather sizable, and eclectic (as in a lot of short series/one shots) anime collection, over 100 titles on both DVD and VHS.
With that said, the last anime I've watched was FUNimation's latest and probably last dubbed LUPIN THE 3RD movie, MISSED BY A DOLLAR, and I am also about halfway through with STEAM DETECTIVES, which so far is a little episodic but fun (even though I am not a huge fan of "mecha").

My collection is a bet eclectic and full of shorter, or one-shot series mostly due to being a bit poor. :p If you can find a topic where posting one's collection is valid I'd gladly do it. There is also anime I have seen but do not own any of, like NARUTO.

I just finished the second half of STEAM DETECTIVES this morning/early afternoon. I was right, got a little more hardcore towards the end, but still on the edge of PG (although being how wimpy American censors are, it'd get slapped with a PG-13 due to the last 5-6 episodes or so, which are really rather tame compared to, say, Neon Genesis Evangelion or even a typical episode of JLU). A fun series overall, but not for everyone's tastes.

THE GUYVER from the 90's. I'd seen it before but I finally was taking a peek at the MANGA DVD's as the last time I saw at least half the series, it was from a second hand VHS that recorded from L.A. HERO'S original dub (which Manga kept intact in terms of the dub itself). I'll never forgive Manga for cutting out the Japanese themes for the intro/ending and instead trying to make their own themesong and intro-bits...which just came out terrible. At least it's still available via special feature.
"Bio-Booster Arma Guyvah...is coming to GET YOUU!" inspires laughs in me all the time.
As for the rest of the series, it's classic monster-smashing fun. You either like it or you don't. But the series sort of goes downhill in animation quality, and introduces a lot of dangling plot points, in the second half.
I've always liked The Guyver and hopefully the new series, which is airing in Japan and presumably may be brought over by ADV, will deliever on a more modern take.

Yeah, it was one of my "first 20" most likely (at least the first 6 episodes; I didn't see the second half until about 3 years ago). Basically MANGA decided to basically keep the L.A. HERO dub, which was a fine dub, but apparently they wanted to change some bits of it to reflect "their" take I guess. So some bits were recast (by poorer actors, or decent actors doing a poor job) and with other parts, they kept the same dub, but it seems they chose to insert different "takes" for the lines (as in, a voice actor will likely record many takes for a line before the edittor/director decides which fits in best; anime dubbing is notoriously repetitive to get the lip-synchs right), as well as different "metallic effects" for some of the voices (Guyver II retains his L.A. HERO dub voice, but they altered how his voice sounds in "Guyver" form, and it sounded worse).
Of course, the only reason I know all this was because I'd watched half of the series via those long out of print L.A. HERO tapes (hell, L.A. Hero was basically dead in the water by 1994, when Manga got the rights to Guyver). The second half the series I only saw via Manga dub, so naturally it was not as disorienting.
Manga also cut out two lines; one minor one (which does nothing for the plot) in Episode 1 and a sort-of important one in Episode 3 (Guyver I comments on how "the control metal protects itself" after he discovers it can fire a forehead-laser when he is grabbed; this line is COMPLETELY CUT and there is only awkward silence for about 10+ seconds, which was jarring). I also think they added in a few more cursewords than I remember.
Yeah, it's nothing deep, but it naturally brings back high school memories, and for a "monster actioner", it's one of the classics. Very dark stuff.
I do hope the newer series airing in Japan now manages to do better, though. GUYVER ended with a few plot points left dangling and the animation quality was hardly the best even for 1992. 26 episodes from ADV (the company that supposedly is involved in the revamped version airing in Japan) may be good, hopefully.
The second half of the series is a little disappointing, but if you really liked GUYVER, you may want to give it a look. The animation quality goes downhill, though. WAY downhill (for 1992, even). Sadly, MANGA is only selling it in box sets, so it you only want the second part, it may be hard to track down as its out of print.
